National Specialty Updateby Jim Todhunter, Show Chair [email protected]

2018 BMDCA National News

As we ramp up preparations for the 2018 BMDCA National Specialty, hosted by our own Nashoba Valley club, we’re also amping up our social media campaign around the National. We have two Facebook channels which are the primary tools in this campaign.

The 2018 BMDCA National Specialty page is the place to find all sorts of information about the National. We publish news about the National, the BMDCA 50th Anniversary, Sturbridge restaurants and sights, member insights, and updates from the Golden Jubilee Specialty Shop. The 2018 BMDCA National Specialty Corkboard group is the place for people to engage in conversation about the National and learn of the latest National updates. These Facebook channels are further supported by a 2018 BMDCA Twitter feed and the 2018 BMDCA National Specialty web page.

Help us drive the success of our social media campaign. Follow the 2018 BMDCA National Specialty page to stay informed and share posts you find interesting. Join the 2018 BMDCA National Specialty Corkboard group and be a part of the conversation.

You can also help generate content for the Specialty page. Have a neat picture from a specialty you attended? Email [email protected] a copy along with the year and location of the National and a short caption, and we’ll format and publish it for you.

We also need more volunteers. Now’s the time to get involved. We’re having a 2018 National Planning Meeting on Sunday, August 6th in Brimfield, MA. (Email for directions.) We’ll have

a potluck lunch from noon to 1PM, followed by a meeting from 1 – 3 PM. This is the perfect way to learn what’s happening and have fun while making the National a fabulous event. To ensure there’s enough seating for all, please bring your own folding or camp chair. If you haven’t seen the Show site yet, join us for a site tour at the Sturbridge Host Hotel at 11AM on the 6th.

SPECIAL OFFER: Those attending the August 6th meeting can save the shipping on their Golden Jubilee Specialty Shop ways & means order. Just use the promo code AUGMEET when you place your order and pick up your order at the meeting. Offer details are on the 2018 Corkboard.

We’re also planning to have a National update meeting at Fall Fun Day. So, save the dates: August 6th – 2018 National Planning Meeting, and September 30th – 2018 National Update at Fall Fun Day.

2018 BMDCA National News

Nationals For Newbies & Non-Show Peopleby Karlo Laforteza, BMDCNV Director

There’s a perception that the Nationals are only for Berner people who show which is not the case. I’m writing to personally invite newbies and non-show people to some interesting things you can do at Nationals. Please note schedule is subject to change.

Welcome bagJust for registering online and going to Nationals, you get a welcome bag with the Nationals logo. It also contains a lot of things for your Berner. You can see a photo of the welcome bag I got at the 2016 Nationals.

Monday – Saturday, Shopping!Looking for some Berner items? Buy early before they run out. I’m sorry for your wallet.

Monday – Tuesday, Berner UniversityThis is a two-day conference where you can learn from the most experienced Berner people about Berner health, obedience and other fun things to do. For one flat fee, you can attend as many (or as few) classes as you would like. Think of it like a Berner class buffet.

Monday – Friday, Photo ContestDo you have that prize-winning Berner photo? Enter it and you can win a prize. Or go see the photos and vote for your favorite.

Monday – Friday, Rescue GalleryDo you have a rescue Berner? Share their photo and story among walls of other rescue Berners.

Tuesday, Draft WorkshopLearn about drafting from the most experienced draft people. Then watch the draft tests to see some Berners do what they were bred to do.

Tuesday – Friday, RaffleJoin the raffle for some Berner items donated by attendees from around the world.

Tuesday – Friday, Longshots PhotographyFor a donation, you will receive great photos of your dogs taken by BMDCNV’s very own Pat Long. Funds will go to BERNER Inc rescue. Some people make this a yearly tradition to see their Berners grow. Here’s a sample of Pat’s work from the 2008 Nationals.

Wednesday, Team ObedienceSearch “BMDCA Team Obedience” on YouTube and watch all

the fun. Better yet, see it for yourself.

Wednesday, Berner-Garde DNA collectionWant your Berner to help with health research? They will collect your dog’s blood and cheek sample for free and this will help researchers develop tests and find a cure to some diseases that affect our beloved breed. Your Berner might also get a free treat or souvenir.

Thursday, Veterans paradeThis is one of my personal favorites. Watch some of the oldest Berners in North America and make sure to bring some tissues. I have had a chance to meet a 14yo.

Thursday, Health Fund AuctionCome see some unique Berner items and even bid for some of them. Or just watch and have fun while we raise money to help Berner health.

Looking for a breederIf you go and don’t meet a breeder, then you’re probably in the wrong place. We are expecting 700-1,000 of the top Bernese Mountain Dogs in North America and their breeders to be present. I find that the best times to talk to breeders would be Friday and Saturday morning a few hours before the show starts.

These are just some of the activities that I wrote about. There are a lot more. So now that I’ve piqued your interest to attend the Nationals, I recommend that you join the 2018 BMDCA National Specialty Corkboard on Facebook. Introduce yourself and everyone there will be very helpful in giving newbies some tips. You’ll be familiar with some names by the time Nationals comes so you won’t be a complete newbie. You will get to attach a face to a name and make some life long friends.

See you in Sturbridge!

Spring DayFU N

I have been attending Fun Days since the early 2000s. I enjoy attending Fun Days because of the variety of activities offered,

with opportunities for both learning from and for teaching each other. We have a club with a great diversity of expertise among the

members and drawing on and sharing that expertise is fun and a win-win situation. It's fun and of benefit for both us and our dogs.

Getting to see friends and make new friends is also a big drawing card for me. The fairgrounds is a long distance away for many of us,

but is a great location for Fun Day and I always feel it is worth the travel time. The shopping is good, too! If you haven't experienced a

Fun Day yet, get out there and find out what you've been missing!

Bandanas for Bernersby Linda DeCelles, Berner Inc. Rescue Chair

WE ARE THE RESCUE ARM OF THE NASHOBA CLUBEDUCATION & RESCUE

Rescue NotebookRescue Notebook

BMDCNV member Jane Boas has designed a set of bandanas for dogs to help Berner Inc. rescues. This ingenious bandana is hemmed so that it can be attached to your dog’s collar. No more slipping off!

There are several designs and each has reversible patterns. Very popular are the sports bandanas with two different local teams on each.

The Boas Berner Bandanas were a hot item at Spring Fun Day. Thanks to Jane’s generosity and creativity, $150 was raised from bandana sales for Berner, Inc. (Thanks also to Dennis, Odin and Vidar Boas for delivering them to Spring Fun Day.)

We will be featuring more of these stylish items at future events. Look for them at Fall Fun Day! In the meantime, Murphy and Lucy are modeling for you the Shamrock-I woof you! bandana. Murphy sports the shamrock side and Lucy styles the woof side.

Benedito (a.k.a. Ben) is almost nine months old. He is from a breeder in Ohio who has raised them for over 30

years. When I picked him up in January he was quite sick. It has taken me six months to get him well, and he is now sound and just a very handsome, loving boy. He can

be quite stubborn at times, but ultimately complies with some of my commands. We got off to a rocky start and so his socialization and training had to be put on hold. Anya W. has been very helpful with seeing that he does get the training he needs. He is now very friendly and

happy, and a true friend. His name means " a blessing," which he has been in every sense of the word. My sister Chris lost her 14 year old Lab, Beau, shortly before Ben

arrived. He has helped Chris and her family fill a terrible void, and Ben loves all of them very much.

He loves to play!

We brought Kaiser home from on March 12. My husband and I got him to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary (which we now joke is the "dog fur" anniversary). He has brought us so much joy ever since! Kaiser is friendly and mellow. He goes to work with me and sleeps under my desk. Everyone who comes into my office is in awe of his beauty and calm disposition! My three sons adore him. Our 5 year old Lab/hound mix is more reserved with her affection for him, but she and Kaiser get along and we have a peaceful household. We think Kaiser is one of the two best dogs ever! photo: my son Alex and Kaiser

In RemembranceAria

14 years, 3 months, and 1 day simply is not long enough. We wanted to keep her forever. She was the first-ever Ursli puppy. She arrived --

delighted, breathtakingly beautiful, and singing -- and never changed. She was a gentle soul with a wonderful sense of fun. She had very

little grey -- you wouldn’t have guessed her age if you didn’t know. When she was younger, we trained her in agility, and taught her to set up between your legs. She never tired of running

between your legs after that, and we nearly went flying plenty of times! She brought fun and

happiness to every corner of every day, and that is what we’ll remember.
