The concept behind the Charles is to have a high seat modular sofa with all the elements available in different forms, types and sizes. Linear and corner compositions have been developed with these elements in mind, especially for the chaise lounge end units. The Charles’ peninsula-style compositions look especially beautiful as the centerpiece of a room. The single-seat cushion, the free pillows placed on the backrest and the pure lines of the die-cast aluminium feet give the Charles sofa a decidedly modern feel.

Patricia Urquiola has designed a surprising series of seats that transform the traditional concept of the sofa. She has named the product Bend-Sofa due to its curvaceous albeit monolithic form. It gives the appearance of being manually moulded from a supple material as if by a sculptor. In practice, it’s made from a study of 3-D models and digital research. Bend-Sofa effectively conveys the idea of motion by alternating full and empty spaces. Contrasting stitchings add to the intrinsic design on the surface. The backrest is irregularly shaped, but without compromising comfort. Curved modules - assembled starting with the seats, ottoman and corner elements - form a sofa that breaks out of the usual visual schemes and differentiates from other contemporary pieces on account of its calculated eccentricity.

The J.J. family presents armchairs with a different look and a wide variety of materials: with a steel-rod structure supporting a wooden frame, they convey a certain degree of lightness. Entirely made of thermo-treated ash wood, they hint at traditional aesthetics. The armchair fitted with a sleigh, the expression of the traditional rocking chair, becomes even more glamorous when it is attired in long-haired Mongolian lamb fur.

The die-cast aluminum structure supports a deep seat, with a joint back which also acts as armrest, on which cushions sit freely. The design allows both an erect and a more relaxed position by resting on one of the wings of the armrest. The formal balance results from the constant thickness of the body and by the profile of the seat, which is sinuous at the top and ends in the light steel frame. Its removable covers have metal zips on the back, which becomes a decorative motif.

A sheet of leather “pinched” in two places at the base: here is where the movement and natural inclination of the headboard originate. It has a comfortable and protective shape with remarkable formal simplicity and very thin sides marked by a lengthwise seam. B&B Italia leathers are chrome-tanned and aniline-dyed; treatments that help preserve the natural qualities of the product. WOOD: A heritage to be protectedThe indiscriminate use of wood and consequent depletion of the world’s forests is slowly but surely becoming a thing of the past. In many areas of the world people are now aware that forests must be managed intelligently if wood is to be used as a raw material and balance the planet’s oxygen needs at the same time. As a result, special resource maintenance and reforestation programs are being carried out in many countries. The Charles sofa system, a long-time bestseller, is introduced in an outdoor version: the Charles Outdoor.Characteristics that made it a classic of pure contemporary taste have been left unchanged. The system will have the same slim frame, flexibility and signature design of the inverted “L” shape aluminium foot of its indoor counterpart. However the piece gracefully evolves from practical outdoor use while still maintaining the beauty and simplicity of the original version.The piece is lightweight thanks to its slim aluminium frame coupled with an external surface created by open interlacing brown polypropylene ribbon.

This collection’s armchairs and chairs are designed in several different shapes and heights.The polyethylene fibre interlacing are joined by natural or bronze abaca. The Butterfly gets its name from the “butterfly”shape created by the outer corner that joins the armrest and the backrest. It is a modular seating system that responds effectively to the needs of customization and comfort, suitable for free and informal usage. Its modular structure is shaped around an ottoman, which is the base piece, and, when integrated with the backrest and/or the armrest, becomes a central or terminalelement, either left or right. The combination of these elements, using a simple joint system, makes it possible to set up versatile, free-form configurations, from in-line sofas to corner solutions, and front facing as well as lounge layouts.

The Butterfly complements have an outlinethat perfectly follows the lines of the sofa,harmoniously flanking the seat at the top. The family consists of round and squarelow tables featuring a large weave pattern, made of tortora coloured twisted polyethylene fibres that wraps around the grey painted aluminium frame. The white Carrara marble “venatino statuarietto” surface finish is available for these two complements.

The rounded, soft and sinuous shapes of theFat-Sofa seating system are the basis for thenew outdoor version, characterized by a brand new interlacing design. Its fully padded seat is accompanied by a metal frame backrest that supports the original weave, creating a special play of fullness and emptiness. The large weave pattern, made of tortora coloured twisted polyethylene fibres, makes the design unique and respects the designer’s idea of lightness, transparency and puts the furnishings in an open “dialogue” with the surrounding environment.Fat-Sofa Outdoor consists of four types, ranging from the linear sofa to a chaise longue, to two height variants in the armchairs.

As fluid and harmonious as ever, identical to the indoor version, but with a lighter appearance thanks to the materials, the Papilioseating collection by Naoto Fukasawa now joins the Outdoor collection.The Grande Papilio, Piccola Papilio and Mini Papilio, in all three sizes, display their distinctive, single material appeal, with a grey anthracite colour polyethylene interlacing that adapts perfectly to their curves. The ottoman, of course, echoes Grande Papilio design with polyethylene interlacing.

OUTDOOR COVER AND UPHOLSTERY

OUTDOOR FABRICThe threads in B&B Italia Outdoor fabrics offer excellent colour resistance to UV rays, brine, chlorine, acids, suntan creams, sweat,stains and wear. The stabilisers added for outdoor use and the additives used for dying the thread prevent the formation of bacteria, mold and fungus. The stitching on the covers are designed with a special thread with a water-repellent finish, that blocks the absorption of water and penetration through to the fabric. Carefully tensioned stitching prevents the passage of water through the needle hole. The water resistance of the fabrics, differs according to their fiber composition and their treatment.To launder the Outdoor covers at home, please follow the instructions represented by the care symbols attached to the product.

OUTDOOR UPHOLSTERIES Polyester covers: to better protect the upholstery (seat cushions, headrests and backs), all cushions are fitted with a polyester cover whose water repellent treatment offer greater protections and an additional barrier against the penetration of liquids.The covers on Butterfly and Fat-Sofa Outdoor upholstery also offer the additional protection of a heat-sealed ribbon under the stitching,which makes the linings completely waterproof.

Upholsteries: The seat cushions are made of contoured polyurethane,and the backrest cushions are in polyester fiber.To fight the formation of folds and/or wrinkles caused by use, we recommend simply hanging the cover out and beating it manually to remove dust and air from the fibres. If the upholstery accidentally gets wet because of a strong, unexpected shower, we recommend removing the cover and allowing the product to air/sun dry.Husk Outdoor upholstery: regularly detach the cushion from the frame and fluff it up on all sides. To launder the upholstery at home, follow the care symbols attached to the product. Hang it in the open air to dry.When the product is not being used (for example, in the winter), we recommend you remove the seat and back cushions and place them in a dry, ventilated area.
