    (A) Broadband related important tips

A.1 Trouble shooting of some common broadband problems

A.2 Check Points for Reliable and Speedy Internet Connection:

    1. SNR value must be greater than 13.See DSL line parameters in Modem. If value is belowthan 13 then change line, vertical, DP or pair.

    2. Attenuation level must be less than 40. See DSL line parameters in Modem. If value is

  • 8/13/2019 b.b Maintenance Book Mp 27.12.2011

    5/68

    5

greater than 40 then change line, vertical, DP or pair.

    3. ADSL Splittermust be used on a Telephone line at subscriber premises.

    4. Physical layout of line must be in accordance with norms followed i.e Phone Line coming fromDP/Pillar side must be first terminated at a splitter in subscriber home.

    5. Also Before splitter there must be----No Parallel Phones Connection,No Intercom,

No EPBAX,No Joints/Cuts in Line,No Conduit/Internal Wiring. All the devices must be used after ADSL splitter.

    6. TelephoneLine Path should be away from Electrical Lines/Equipments/Devices.

    7. All Terminals or Connecting Points must be Clean and Rust free.

    8. If the distance (underground cable) of the subscriber's modem is more than 2 Kms from theTelephone Exchange (DSLAM) then use only G.dmt Modulationin the modem DSLsettings. Disable all other modulations.

    9. Try to Use power from UPS supplyfor Modem's adapter to avoid fluctuations.10. Use Modem Adapter as per the Original Current & Voltage rating given/printed on Modem.

Using low voltage or current rating adapter causes DSL to become unstable.

    11. PPPoE (Always ON) setting are much stable and faster than Bridge (Dial-up) setting. Even ifthere is high Attenuation and Low SNR the Broadband connect and work well most of thetimes.

    12. If the line quality is not so good or the Broadband Plan or speed requirement are less than2 Mbps (like in the case of unlimited 256 Kbps plan) than tell your NIB staff to Lower the profileof Broadband connection to 1 Mbps from 2 Mbps ,it will make your SNR to go up and linkstability increases.

    13. You can Delete/Disable all the irrelevant PVC values in the WAN setting of the modem otherthan 0/35, 0/100, 0/32.

    14. Always Enable NAT, Firewalland Default Route in the Modem configuration page.

    15. Disable Automatic Updatesof most of the Programs in your computer.

    16. Delete/Uninstallunnecessary software like Web Toolbars, Screensavers, Weather updates,Desktop Gadgets etc. from the computer.

    17. Use Professional Anti-Viruswith Internet Security suite for added protection from malwares. As most of the speed is hogged by Viruses ,Trojans , Worms ,Spywares ,Ad wares etc. presentin computer.

    18. Use Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome or Operafor Web Browsing which are faster, Safer andreliable than Internet Explorer.

    19. Use Download Managerfor Downloading files rather than using inbuilt windows traditionaldownloading and saving files .As the Download Manager uses specific technology which boostspeed many times (i.e utilizes full bandwidth available in your Broadband Plan.)

    20. Prefer Window XP or Windows 7 than Windows Vista for using Internet as the later is slower inresponse to other Operating system while using Internet.

    21. Never use Two ADSL Splitters on same line for any parallel phone connections, Instead use

phone extension for using multiple connection.

    22. At MDF side (in Telephone Exchange) all connections, jumpers and fuses should be neatlyconnected.

    23. In E10B Exchanges we can avoid using GD tubes in Fuses. It can increase Line Quality (SNRvalue)

    24. Last but not the least. Pillars and DP should be free from Dust and Rust.

A.3 Power Range of Optical Transceivers for Broadband Multiplay Equipments

A.4 TIPS FOR GOOD BROADBAND SPEED TO THE CUSTOMERS

    1. Use of Internal DP for Broadband connections:Broadband connection should be provided with internal DP only as far as possible. Howeverif the drop wire is used from DP to the customer house, it should be as straight as possible, should be of single length without joints. The drop wire should not be coiled anywhere andalso should be away from electrical lines. If these are not taken care then telephone maywork fine but broadband connection may disconnect, frequently.

    2. Splitters and Parallel telephones:The splitter separates the high frequency ADSL signals from low frequency telephonesignals. If the splitter is not installed correctly the broadband will go down every time there isan incoming call.

  • 8/13/2019 b.b Maintenance Book Mp 27.12.2011

    7/68

    7

Any parallel phone connection in the customer premises should be after the splitter. Thereshould not be electrical wires running parallel to the wires going into the modem.

    3. The SNR may be checked by going into the modem settings and further into ADSL lineparameter where SNR Margin and attenuation can be checked. The SNR should beminimum 13 or above and attenuation should be as low as possible. If attenuation goesabove 40 or SNR goes below 13 then the subscriber outdoor line need to be attended /changed.

    4. The Nuisance & Danger of Virus:One might some time feel that the broadband was quite good some time back but it is slownowadays. One of the major reasons for this is the infection of Virus into the PC. Adwares,

spywares too may affect speed. Hence, it is very important to have a good anti-virus softwareand spyware, adware detectors in the PC. Regular update to these software and Windowsupdates are also a must. Use only legal version of Windows.

    5. Watch-out for bandwidth overhead:Many applications like Windows updates, anti-virus updates and other software updates willbe using the broadband connection in the background. Some of these updates might ask forconfirmation before downloading, many may not even ask and will be simply running in thebackground which may affect browsing / download speed. One can find-out the applicationswhich are running, by going to the Task Manager (Press Ctrl-Alt-Del keys together to get intothe Task Manager). One may shut down such of those applications which are running withoutyour consent. But beware that shutting down some vital applications required by theoperating system inadvertently will cause hanging of system. Windows updates, anti-virusupdates etc. could be scheduled to run when the system is free. This will help in utilizing the

bandwidth effectively.6. Crossing the Free-usage: On crossing the monthly free usage limit (except unlimited plans),

one receives an intimation automatically. Kindly press the button, I Agree to continue toenjoy the broadband which is chargeable as per subscribed plan. However, kindly switch-offand switch-on the modem after pressing the I Agree button.

A.5 Bridge mode and PPPoE mode of broadband connection :

Normally the subscriber broadband connection should be provisioned in bridge modei.e. adialer should be made and user id and password need to be stored in the dialer. The dialer isto be clicked every time to get connected to broadband. Connectivity through dialer willprovide better security in case of WiFi modems and will also be useful for using prepaidbroadband over the same ADSL connection.

Other mode is PPPoE mode (always on) where user id and password are stored in themodem itself and one can start browsing straight away. First modem should be powered onand then PC should be started.

A.6 FACTORS HAMPERING THE BROWSING SPEED

    1. Virus Infected PCCheck for the virus infection. Scan thoroughly to remove complete traces of virus. Make sure

that the system is virus free and not performing in a sluggish way without connecting to the internet

    2. Low SNRLine attention is in relation to the "loop loss" on your line. The further you are away from the

exchange the higher your attenuation figure will be as the signal loss increases. The lower yourattenuation figure the more chance you have of getting the faster speeds. In general, higher SignalTo Noise Ratio (SNR) will result in less error.

    SNR MARGIN REMARK

6db or lowBad and will experience no line synchronization or intermittentsynchronization problems.

7db 10 db Fair but does not leave much room for variances in conditions.

11db 20 db Good with little or no synchronization problems

    20db 28db Excellent

    29db or above Outstanding

    3. Wrong ADSL Line profile attached in DSLAM port for high speed plan Check for the correctness of the Speed profile attached to the connected port. Normally for ADSL ports are configured for 2Mbps profile. For high speed plans configure the port manually.

    4. Packet loss at the connected NE Packet loss at the connected network element imparts slow speed to the customers

connected from the concerned Network element. Ping with certain packet size for checking packet loss (Command: ping l Size IP Address) Example for 10 Bytes packet size: ping l 10 218.248.240.79 If there are any losses please check the media/connectivity. Make sure that the no packet loss are incurred

    5. Low power in the RPR ring Low power in the RPR ring may adversely affect the speed. Ensure the power levels are well

with in limit. Threshold set for RPR rings In case of low power please check transmission media termination/joints. In case of high power level please use pads to reduce the power level pads.

    Ring Threshold set

    1G Ring -22db10G Ring -14.1 db

    6. Cascading of OCLANsMany OCLANs are cascaded with out master OCLAN Uplink media up gradation to GE.

At many places the mater OCLAN uplink is still FE and cascading is done with out taking inconsideration that the traffic from the cascaded OCLANs also will flow through the Master OCLANuplink.

Calculate the expected traffic which will flow through the master OCLAN UPLINK after

cascading and go for the media up-gradation. Cascading of too many OCLANs with out properplanning will definitely hamper the service

    7. Wrong AAA policy attached in LDAP Check for the correctness of the AAA policy assigned in LDAP for the customer AAA policy in turn will define the speed If the AAA policy is not assigned as per the plan speed may vary Consult with NOC for the correctness of the AAA policy as per the Plan.

    8. High DNS resolution time Resolution time may be high in case of the connected DNS failure/ DNS overloading

Will affect all the customers connected to the concerned DNS Perform nslookup from the field as a f irst level for trouble shooting. (Please see next section

for procedure of nslookup) Inform to NOC in case of any issue or change the DNS in LAN setting to some other working

    DNS.

Note: DNS changing may in turn affect the password/ Redirection

    Procedure for nslookup:

Click Start, Run , type cmdin the box and press enter to open command promptalternatively in the windows operating system click programs, accessories, and commandprompt to open command prompt window.

Result of the above commands has been shown in the screen shot on next slide. If you seelike screen shot result, it means that site is resolved by DNS. If not, please mail [email protected] attaching the screenshot of the result.

    9. High latency at MPLS

Check the latency from one hop to another using trace route command for the problematicsites. Latency of 350-400 ms are permissible between two hops Inform MPLS NOC/ MP NOC in case of any abnormality/High latency

    Procedure:

    a) Open the command prompt.

    b) Type tracertwww.yahoo.com and press enter (OR type the problematic site instead ofwww.yahoo.com

Step-1: First verify with the customer whether the DSL Link is stable or unstable at

    Subscriber End.

Step-2: If the Link is unstable

Check the DSL Link with the help of ADSL Modem at MDF Line side Port,(DSLAM) Line side Port, corresponding PSTN side port (DSLAM). Please

ensure that proper connector is used at MDF tag block during this testing

instead of punching the wire every time which may damage the tag block

If the Link is stable at MDF Line side then make over the fault to the

concerned lineman section for testing at External plant.

If the link is not stable at MDF, then the fault should be back traced to theDSLAM port.

Testing Process to be Followed by Line staff

Step-1: After reaching the customer premises, please verify at the subscriber end whether the

DSL Link is stable or unstable at Subscribers end

Step-2: If the Link is not stable then recheck the hardware connectivity as per the Splitter
