INTRODUCTION

This booklet is a “GUIDE” for grade 12 students and their parents.

The information in this booklet is a record of all the awards that were available to the graduating students of 2016/2017.

Please Note: The Award donors set the criteria for each award and also set the application deadlines for each award.

All 2016– 2017 award, bursary & scholarship deadlines will be advertised in the following 3 places:

KSER Scholarship Application – pick up in the counselling center

Application Deadline: April 30th, 2017 The KSER Scholarship Fund offers a helping hand by supporting Grade 12 student-athletes graduating from School District 23 on their pursuit of excellence in athletics and academics. The KSER Scholarship Fund’s mission is to help relieve some of the financial burden associated with fully committing heart-and-soul into a career objective, whether it is athletic, academic, or both. Two scholarships will be awarded at $1000.00 each. The Central Okanagan Bursary and Scholarship Society (COBSS) is a non-profit group of volunteers from the Central Okanagan area who are dedicated to providing financial assistance to our Grade 12 graduates in order that they may further their post-secondary education. A single application gives a student access to a catalogue of over 400 awards, some with no criteria and some with specific criteria.

COBSS CRITERIA:

Must be a Canadian Citizen or Landed Immigrant, living as a permanent resident within the boundaries of School District No. 23 and attending a member school of COBSS (see www.cobss.ca) by January 15th of the graduating year.

Must have applied and plan to attend full-time at a post-secondary institution in September of the year of application. Confirmation of application may be required.

Must have an average of 60% in all Grade 11 and 12 completed courses and interim marks at the time of application.

Must have the potential to grad for the first time in June of the year of application. Must be attending one of the member schools of the Society by January 15th of the

graduating year. Must understand that your application form and the attached data must be for a full-time

student. If a student fails to enroll at an approved post-secondary institution as a full-time student, any bursary or scholarship may revert to the Central Okanagan Bursary and Scholarship Society to be awarded to a qualified student.

Bob Ross Literary Award

A high school student who has an interest in English Literature & Journalism, who has demonstrated ability to communicate in English and is interested in continuing studies in this field.

Brookhaven Youth Volunteer Bursary

A student who has been a youth volunteer at Brookhaven Care Centre for at least two years and is pursuing a career in the Health Care Field.

Bruce Stewart Memorial Award

Students must show a strong work ethic. Awarded to students who have participated in the Bruce Stewart Memorial Basketball Tournament, other sports may be considered.

Buckland Family Bursary

A student who is planning studies in 1) History, 2) Geography or 3) Journalism at Okanagan College or UBCO.

Canadian Tire/Bert Gostlin Memorial Bursary

Preference will be given to a student satisfying all of the following criteria: a student who is an employee or the son/daughter of an active or retired Canadian Tire Kelowna employee. The retired employee must have had a minimum of five years employment at Kelowna store. A student with a strong academic background who is

involved in extra-curricular activities within the school & community, a student pursuing certification in the trades industry, and a student demonstrating financial need.

Captain Michael J. Black Memorial Award

OKM students to be considered first. A student pursuing a career in commercial aviation. Passion more important than marks. If no students from OKM qualify, then all SD No.23 school students to be considered.

Cecil E. Moore Engineering Award

Awarded to students in SD No. 23 pursuing studies in engineering. First preference shall be for two males and two females.

A student who is a Canadian citizen of Japanese descent.

Kelowna & District Dental Society Award

A student pursuing studies in the Dental Field. (i.e. Dentistry, Dental Hygiene, Dental Lab Technician, Certified Dental Assistant).

Kelowna & District Fish & Game Club Award

A Kelowna Fish & Game Club Member or member's son or daughter or a student who is active in hunting or other shooting sports or a student who is pursuing post secondary education in Biology or Wildlife Conservation.

Kelowna Branch Okanagan Historical Society Bursary

Awarded to a Grade 12 student pursuing further education, with preference given to someone studying history, natural history, journalism or geography at a local post secondary institution.

Kelowna Buddhist Temple Bursary

A member in good standing and actively involved in temple activities.

Kelowna Calligraphy Guild Bursary

Open to visual fine arts (non-performing) students with preference to a student with calligraphic skills.

Kelowna Canadian Italian Club Bursary

Awarded to a graduating student pursuing further education who is a dependant of a club member(s) in good standing for five years or longer.

Kelowna Capital News Bursary

A student who has been a carrier, or an employee, or is a dependant of an employee of Kelowna Capital News or Flyer Delivery Service. Preference will be given to a student pursuing Journalism, Publishing and/or Writing, Marketing, Sales and Business Management.

Kelowna Chapter Adoptive Families Association Award

A student who has joined their family through adoption and has a potential for his/her chosen field. Preferably the student will have some need.

Kelowna Curling Club Bursary

Student a member or family members of the Kelowna Curling Club. Good marks, good citizenship, and financial need.

Kelowna Golf & Country Club Junior Development Bursary

A student who is a junior golf member of Kelowna Golf and Country Club. An average or better student, demonstrates good character, deportment and citizenship at the Club and in the community. An average or better golfer and demonstrates a need for financial assistance in order to pursue post secondary studies, active participation in Club's Junior Program and activities.

Kelowna Hospital Auxiliary Educational Award

A student pursuing a career in a human health care field who in their graduating year was a Candy Striper/Cadet/Junior Volunteer and/or a child or grandchild of an active auxiliary member. Students MUST submit a statement of volunteer hours from their Supervisor of Volunteers at the Kelowna Hospital Auxiliary.

Kelowna Hyundai Scholarship

Awarded to a student who has an average grade of 75% or higher. Must be majoring in Management or Business. Must attend a local post-secondary institution.

Kelowna Medical Imaging Bursary

A student pursuing a career in Medical Health Sciences with emphasis on diagnostic imaging (i.e. Radiology (X-Ray), Ultrasound or Nuclear Medicine). However, this does not exclude other Health Services.

Kelowna Minor Basketball Association Award

A KMBA player and/or referee and/or coach who was involved in our association for at least three years.

Kelowna Minor Football Award

A student who has been a participant in Minor Football for a minimum of two years. Student must provide dates participated. Need is a prime consideration.

Kelowna Minor Hockey Bursary

A student currently playing hockey in Kelowna Minor Hockey Association, and must have played hockey for at least three years in Kelowna Minor Hockey.

Kelowna Minor Lacrosse/Andy Woods Memorial Bursary

A Minor Lacrosse player who played minor lacrosse in Kelowna in his graduating midget year and who displayed leadership, sportsmanship, knowledge of, and dedication to the game. Student must also participate in other school/community activities.

Kelowna Professional Firefighters Bursary

Student must continue to show leadership while being involved in community service in and/or out of the school setting. A student who is a son or daughter of an active or retired member of the Kelowna Professional Firefighters Local 953.

Kelowna Skating Club Bursary

A student who has been a Home Club member of the Kelowna Skating Club for at least five years.

Kelowna Ultimate Players/Josh Bernot Memorial Bursary

Awarded to a male and a female student who must be a member in good standing of the Kelowna Ultimate Players Society. Student must volunteer in the community in a sport capacity (i.e. coach, referee, etc.)

Kelowna United FC Soccer Award

Awarded to two players who have played soccer with Kelowna United FC for a minimum of two years including their grad year. Family participation in club activities may be considered.

Kelowna Youth Soccer/Ron Hatch Memorial Bursary

Applicant must have been a registered player with Kelowna Youth Soccer Club for at least three years. Must currently be playing, refereeing, coaching or involved in administrative work in soccer.

Kenneth B. Day Memorial Bursary

A student entering studies in the field of agriculture or a student entering the trades profession.

KGCC Bryce Essler A student who is a junior golf member of Kelowna Golf and Country

Memorial Bursary Club. An average or better student, demonstrates good character, deportment and citizenship at the Club and in the community. An average or better golfer and demonstrates a need for financial assistance in order to pursue post secondary studies, active participation in Club's Junior Program and activities.

Kiwanis Club Of Kelowna-Summit Bursary

A student whose parent or grandparent is presently or has been a member of a Kiwanis Club and/or a student who provides 25 volunteer hours over and above the school minimum requirements to a Kiwanis project of Community Service project. Application must explain volunteer hours. Student must attend post-secondary institution in BC.

Knights Of Columbus #10781 Award

Awarded to an RSS, IRHS or AAS student who has a catholic religious affiliation and is a member of KOFC. Must attend a post-secondary institution in BC.

Krueger Electrical Award

Awarded to students with financial need and high participation and high academics.

Lake Country Garden Club Award

Resident of Lake Country, preference given to attending education related to Agriculture, Horticulture, Wine Industry or Environmental Engineering. Recipient not to have received more than two other awards from COBSS.

Lake Country Youth Soccer Association Award

Student must have a minimum of 3-4 years of playing, refereeing or coaching with LCYSA.

Must be an employee or son or daughter of an employee of Lakeshore Place Retirement Living.

A student pursuing a career in outdoor recreation sports, physical fitness or environment.

Larry Pearson Memorial Award

Awarded to a student who achieves academic excellence, is in need of financial assistance. Interested in a career and studies in human services with an emphasis on people who are marginalized.

Laura & George Macdonnell Memorial Bursary

Awarded to a student, preferably from RSS, who is continuing their education at an accredited university, college, trade school or technical institution preferably located in BC. The student should demonstrate a strong work ethic with marks averaging 75% or above, and demonstrate a positive and supportive attitude towards their school and community. If there is no RSS student that qualifies it is open to all schools.

A Canadian born student with a 'B' average or higher who is the son or daughter of a widow or widower.

Piano Performance Scholarship

Awarded to students achieving a minimum of 70% in the practical requirements of the RCM Grade 10 piano by February 15th of the student's Grade 12 academic year. Students MUST provide proof of 70% or above from RCM to COBSS electronically or by mail prior to March 15.

Quality Greens Farm Market Award

A student who works at a Quality Greens location for minimum of nine months with good attendance and good performance reviews. The student must remain in Kelowna/West Kelowna for their first year studies.

Awarded to a graduating student who has achieved in academics, sports and leadership/citizenship. Must have attended Dr Knox for at least Grade 9.

Ron Gold Scholarship A student who is Jewish and has a minimum 80% GPA.

Rose Valley PAC Award A 'B' average, or better student who is also active in extra-curricular activities and/or community service and/or athletics. Must have attended Rose Valley for at least three years including Grade 6 (not necessarily consecutively).

A graduating student in SD23 or l'Anse au sable, who has shown leadership in the school's Rotary Interact Club.

A student who attended Springvalley Middle School, and exhibits perseverance in the face of considerable difficulty in attaining graduation.

A student who has a keen interest in hockey who has been registered with Kelowna Minor Hockey Association.

SICA - Howard Strong Awarded to students to take training or further education in the

Scholarship construction industry. Can be applied to tuition, textbooks for entry into a construction trades apprenticeship or related program.

Student must have attended Watson Road Elementary for a minimum of two years.

A student who is a relative, active or retired, of a Westside firefighter.

West Kelowna Minor Hockey Association Award

A student who has played or officiated within WMHA for at least three years.

Given to a student that is graduating from Westside Minor Hockey and must be attending post secondary education.

Westside Youth Soccer Bursary

Awarded to a male & female (one each). The individuals must have played soccer with WYSA for a minimum of three years including their grad year.
