Government has adopted a combination of data analytics and technology enabled tools along with legislative changes to detect tax evasion and also to plug aggressive tax planning structures. Dear Members

Let me begin by wishing you a very Happy and a Prosperous New Year. As the year begins, we replace our calendars and table diaries. The old table diary of 2017 may have been wonderful, we may have used it to the best of our requirements but come 1st January, we invariably change the diary since the old diary has lost its context. This change is more like a reflex action. But let us pause for a moment and reflect back. In our day to day life, are there processes, beliefs and habits which have lost context? If yes, have we changed them or have we adapted ourselves to the changed environment?

Technology has enabled book-keeping and accounting to move completely to system driven processes. As auditors, have we changed the audit process to incorporate more systems checks as compared to the traditional “vouch and tick” approach? As auditors, are we more aware of the risks inherent to the audit process due to systems dependencies? Have we equipped our skillsets to enable us to obtain a reasonable assurance in this regard?

Government has adopted a combination of data analytics and technology enabled tools along with legislative changes to detect tax evasion and also to plug aggressive tax planning structures. While our advices would definitely consider these developments, has our mindset changed to the new context? Have we re-positioned ourselves from tax planners to facilitators of tax compliance?

GST has replaced a plethora of indirect taxes. The process of return filing requires elaborate data upload in a specific manner. Do we believe that there is a long-term value proposition in acting as processors of data or will our context need to change to re-define our roles and responsibilities?

Vol. 20 n No. 10 n JANUARY 2018

The expectations from various quarters of the Society (be it clients, article assistants, employees, friends and relatives, Government) have changed (or rather increased multi-fold). Will simple incremental reactive steps be appropriate or are deep rooted changes in approach required? Or will we enter a mode of self-defence and denial?

In the past, abundance of opportunities in the regulatory space made us excel in those areas. With a progressive liberalisation

of policies and moderate tax rates, will we internally compete in a crowded space or can we change the context to identify our latent capabilities and develop new domains?

Our lifestyles have become sedentary and machines have replaced almost all regular physical activities that our ancestors used to carry out. Have we incorporated a balanced food and exercise regime to compensate for the reduced physical activities? If not, we may be compromising on our health.

To all my male friends out there, women have consistently demonstrated excellence in academics and workspace. Have we changed the context to provide them more respect in personal relations? Does a working daughter-in-law receive the same respect and attention that a working son receives? If not, does this augur well for the long-term development of the society as a whole?

New Year is not merely time to change calendars and diaries. It is also a time to introspect, identify areas requiring change and take definitive action towards the change. I am sure many fellow professionals would be able to confidently and positively answer most of the above questions. But if a genuine self-introspection suggests otherwise, perhaps its’ time to adapt. After all, change is the only constant and history has proven that inability to adapt can even risk the existence of species.

Your Society has always been a harbinger and facilitator of change. More than two decades ago, when the newsletter was launched, Late Shri Narayan Varma could envision the future of the Society. In his communication to the members in the first newsletter, he wrote thus:

Before telecommunication becomes the order of the day, when not only transmission of information but lectures, workshops, etc. also can be arranged via computers and satellite or cable TV and distance learning becomes effective and common for us, this step of launch of BCAS Newsletter is a new milestone for serving the members.

It is befitting that a few months back, true to the vision of Late Shri Narayan Varma, the Society implemented a state-of-the-art e-learning platform. Since then a few programs both free and paid have been made available on this platform. This platform enables a quick release of various courses for all our members at the convenience of their doorsteps. The e-learning platform includes video recordings/ live streaming of various programs conducted at BCAS along with the presentations and course materials. Over a period of time, the platform will also integrate within itself various quizzes and tests and can help to evaluate the learning outcomes. Members can participate in discussions, receive the latest announcements and also compete in friendly leaderboards for each course. I once again encourage you to log in and access the system in the coming days, and also to share your feedback on how we can make this initiative even better.

Your Society has lined up a series of educational programs and intensive courses, the details whereof are available elsewhere in the newsletter. I would request you to participate in large numbers and take benefit of the same.

With warm regards

Yours truly

CA. Sunil Gabhawalla

8TH RESIDENTIAL STUDY COURSE ON IND AS 22ND TO 24TH FEBRUARY, 2018 AT

THE HOTEL GATEWAY BY TAJ GROUP, HINJEWADI, PUNE

Dear Members,

The adoption of Ind AS has catapulted Indian corporate sector to the centre stage of high quality and transparent financial reporting.

The journey of convergence to IFRS has been nine years long and BCAS has been since the past seven years at the forefront in equipping its members in particular and other stakeholders at large with the knowledge of IFRS and Ind AS.

The experience of implementing Ind AS by companies in Phase I has been quite challenging. Companies in Phase II are in the processof implementing IndAS fromF.Y.2017-18 (which inter alia requires restatement of financials for F.Y. 2016-17 as IndAScomparatives) and will have to draw on this experience whereby they should hopefully face less challenges.

The 8th BCAS Ind AS Residential Study Course has been planned to address the implementation challenges and share the experiences of the Phase I companies as well as impart this knowledge of implementing Ind AS to the professionals to ensure a smooth transition for the corporate sector.

To facilitate the finance/accounts persons in companies and professionals in and around Pune to attend the RSC, BCAS has also reserved enrolment for 15 people on non-residential basis as under:

For Members of BCAS: Having their registered address with BCAS at Pune. For Non-Members: Having their office of employment/professional address situated at Pune.

*Please note: enrolment is restricted to 80 participants only.

The 8th Residential Study Course is scheduled on 22nd, 23rd and 24th February, 2018 (Thursday to Saturday).Fees (Including GST @18% and R50/- contribution to the BCAS Foundation)
