Driving in winter can sometimes be a daunting prospect.

Good vehicle preparation, knowledge and driving technique are critical. Here are some winter driving tips for making sure your jour-ney is safe, enjoyable and hazard-free.

Winter readyIs your vehicle approaching the time for its

next scheduled service? If so, don’t put it off. Book your vehicle in for a pre-winter check with your local MTA member business or trusted mechanic. The experts know what to look for – oil levels, heating and cooling systems, wiper blades, fi lters, and battery and tyre pressures amongst other things. By doing this you’ll have peace of mind in knowing that your vehicle is ready for the conditions.

Experience shows that if a car is going to fail, it’s most likely to do so when in the harshest operating conditions – and for most owners, that’s the winter months.

TyresAll the control you have is delivered through

four palm-sized patches of rubber where the tyres meet the road. Start by making sure your tyres are in good condition; having at least the minimum tread depth and being free from cuts and damage.

Make sure your tyres are properly infl ated. Over-infl ation can reduce the gripping action of tyres because the tread will not meet the road surface as it was designed to do.

If you’re going to be driving in the snow, make sure you have the correct chains and snow tyres (if fi tted) – it’s now the law that when you use snow tyres that all four are in fact snow tyres.

Good visibility Reduced visibility means you have to budget

extra time for every drive. Before you hit

the road make sure you can see out of every window and mirror.

Use a proper windscreen scraper or de-icer to remove ice from your vehicle. Do not use warm water, as this may cause your windscreen to crack. People often only associate air-condi-tioning with staying cool during the summer months, but it’s equally vital for ensuring good visibility during the colder months. Get your system checked.

And make sure people can see you. Ensure your lights are all working properly and are correctly adjusted. Get them on early and turn them off late; you may choose to keep them on at all times. Use your main beam, and remember to keep them dipped when travelling in foggy conditions; blasting them on to high beam only results in the light being refl ected straight back at your eyes, making visibility even harder.

Know what to expectIf you’re travelling out of town make sure

you know what you’re in for.Bridges and overpasses ice over faster than

normal roads as the earth is warm and normal roads have the warmth of the earth under-neath. Shady areas cool more quickly than areas in full sun. Shadows from trees, build-ings and hills can cause isolated icy spots.

When accelerating, push the accelerator pedal gently. If you do sense wheel-spin, ease back on the pedal immediately until you feel the tyres grip again. Apply the same princi-ple when braking. Brake gently at fi rst then increase the pedal pressure progressively. You can brake quite hard as long as the application is smooth. Remember, don’t steer if you are braking or accelerating and vice versa.

If your vehicle is fi tted with ABS or a stabil-ity control system, make sure you know what this can do for you. Get experience of your vehicle’s capabilities and how it reacts, before you get stuck.

This week we’re starting a new section all about

our fi rst cars.

There’s something special about your fi rst set of spokes. It’s a day

many of us can barely wait for. Some of us can’t and quietly cheer for the tot or tween taking the family sedan

for a cruise on the evening news. The day we can ditch deliveries by dad

and rides from mum is a day of liberation. It’s the day we get to stretch our wings; the open road is full of potential and promise. A road trip waits to happen and you’re mates suddenly fi nd you at least 42 per cent more cool. Your girlfriend wants to know what colour it is, your best friend wants to know how fast it can go. Your dad wants to know how you plan on paying for gas and your mum’s more concerned about insurance.

Tauranga City Mayor Stuart Crosby’s fi rst wagon was a 1970s Hillman Imp.“It was a little hotted

up. It was a neat little car painted electric blue,” says

Stuart. “When I fi rst got it, it was a dull

white. So I gave it a custom paint job. I paid $600 for it from a car yard in Mt Maunganui. The engine was just under 1000cc. I was a bit of a surfer and regularly drove over to Raglan. It struggled up the Kai-mais a bit. But you could fold the back seats down and sleep in the back. It was a fantastic little car. I bought it when I was an appren-

tice and had it for about two years. I think I traded it in on the next one. Can’t even remember what the second one was.”

The Hillman Imp was a compact, rear-engine saloon car that was manufactured under the Hillman marque by the Rootes Group (later Chrysler Europe) from 1963 to 1976. A small van, the Commer Imp was introduced in November 1965, which spawned the joke ‘Where do you get a cheap commodore from? Off a Commer van’.

The Imp was never designed to be a prestige product. Its main rival of the day was the Mini. Both cars appealed to the second car market. Drivers looking for a shopping cart or a sensible sedan were cer-tain to check out both cars. Yet Imp’s 875 cc alloy power plant gained some notori-ety on the race circuit, giving it somewhat of an edge in some markets.

The perfect family car they said – so let’s see what the family guy thinks.

Sounds great I thought – perfect timing too, coinciding with my wife’s special day. I’ll wrap it up in a ribbon,

and offer it as a joke present!Bay of Plenty Honda sales manager

Hamish Spall tells me a little about the new 2012 CRV, before sitting me behind the wheel and going through its fi ner details. It turns out Honda dealers have been unable to source CRVs since the Fukushima earth-quake and tsunami.

He tells me there has been strong interest from the Honda family in the few weeks since the fi rst cars arrived, with many upgrading already. Understandably so too – the third generation CRV was released in 2007 and was needing some details fresh-ened up.

Hamish’s introduction to the fi ner details of the 2.4 litre all wheel drive Sports ($48,900) covered the rear seats that fold down at the fl ick of a lever, a fl at fl oor in the back seat for improved passenger com-fort, lovely leather seats - which are heated in the front - push-button ignition and a

clever stereo/phone system. With thanks, I bid him farewell promising to look after the smart SUV.

First impressionsIt’s a stylish SUV and drives like a dream.

It has plenty of power, is responsive, has easy steering and open windows offering unobstructed vision, while big fat side mirrors ensure a great view behind. The mirrors and windows are a huge plus, as is the reversing camera which bursts into life on a screen in the dashboard whenever you engage the gear. The reverse camera takes a little getting used to – but is a huge asset once you get into the swing of using it, with lines on the screen showing your reversing path. It’s a great safety measure in all family cars – especially where there are little ones around.

My favourite detail was the ability to hook your smartphone up to the stereo system wirelessly with Bluetooth – to make hands-free calls or listen to your music through the speakers. Now that’s the kind of detail many of today’s drivers will love. Hooking up my phone was simple in the Sport, but for some reason the next day when I swapped the car over for the 2.0 litre front drive model ($39,900) it would not work. This was a little frustrating, and probably a simple mistake, but suggests the setup is not 100 per cent idiot proofed.

Back in the car my mind turns to the birthday cel-

ebrations of the following day and the need to stock up on supplies. I head to the super-market for beer, wine and pate. Shopping com-pleted I return to the car with hands full of bags – and discover another of the car’s special

features. Instead of being stuck fi shing in your pockets or bags for the keys, the Sport unlocks automatically by the key’s sensor when you get close. That has got to be an attribute mums will love.

Then it’s the long way home – as I wonder how exactly I will wrap the car in a big ribbon. A cruise out to the top of Pyes Pa shows the Sport has plenty of ‘get up and go’. Peeling off through Oropi Gorge it handles reasonably on the twisting back roads, but with it picking up speed I quickly have to watch my lead foot.

Family friendlyThe next day the children load in the car

as we prepare to head off for more party supplies. Everyone is ready to go but it takes dad fi ve minutes to eventually fi gure out how to do the middle rear seat belt. It turns

out the belt is stowed in the car ceiling. Then off to the Fresh Market and party

suppliers, where three boxes of produce then a box of party hire plates barely make a dent in the decent-sized boot.

Before returning the car we drive through the suburbs. The children pick the great sound from the stereo as their favourite feature, while the easy-clean leather seats also have to be a big plus in dealing with messy kids.

2.0 litre front wheel driveWe swap over to 2.0 litre for a compari-

son. It offers reasonable power and is pretty comparable overall. The 2.0 litre offers extremely good value for a similar product if you can cope without the leather seats and the few other fi ner details.

For CRV fans the generation four contin-ues to build on the model’s reputation as a versatile car – that offers plenty for family motorists through to retired couples. For newcomers to the CRV it competes well against the many other SUVs in the market.

My preference would be the Sport, but at $9000 less my Scots heritage would prob-ably prompt me to settle for the 2.0 litre.

What about the birthday girl? She happily settles for a matchbox model and my help preparing for the party. “It looks good from here,” she says looking out the kitchen window.

When Chris Verryt at 10 15th Avenue invited me to take a tour of the 2006 Mini Cooper S on his forecourt I was as keen as a kid in a candy store to get my hands on the sweet little treat.

She looks like she drove straight out of Barbie catalogue but this little beast is no toy.

The first things you notice when you slide into the cab are the chrome accents around the display and gear shift. Reimagined by BMW, the finish-ing is top class, with leather interior and European styling complete with Harmon Kardon stereo and analogue

dials large enough for Mr Magoo to find.

This is a car designed to be driven. She is a compact little beast punching

well over her weight. She looks like a toy but performs like a tornado. The road can barely keep up with her.

When the original Mini Cooper S hit the streets in 1964, legend has it the Nelson Police bought a few as the agile rally version was the only car that could catch a V8 on corners.

The Mini Cooper and Cooper S were sportier versions of the popular car that were successful as rally cars, winning the Monte Carlo Rally four times from 1964 through to 1967, although in 1966 the Mini was disqualified after the finish, along with six other British

entrants, which included the

first four cars to finish,

under a questionable ruling that the cars had used an illegal combination of headlamps and spotlights.

Headlights remain an issue with the standard lamps adequate for around town and typical driving, but when you hit a stretch like the Mangorewa - Kaharoa Gorge on SH36 between Tauranga and Rotorua on a drizzly evening, you kind of wish you had an extra pair of beams.

But that’s all you wish for. Getting used to the six-speed trans-

mission offers you almost half gears and the gorge provides a playground to chomp through them. The response is incredible with every acceleration immediate and every brake point perfect.

Maybe I’m getting old, but I don’t think this would be my preferred everyday car. She would make a perfect graduation gift for a favourite daugh-ter, provided she is a bit of a rev head, or an executive accessory for a success-

ful professional. In summary, she is a

driver’s car. If you love cars, performance or

retro styling check the Mini Cooper S out today. A combination of transmission, handling, and horsepower makes the 2006 Mini Cooper S a joy to

drive.

Potential for compulsory third party insurance

Anyone who has ever been hit, scratched or dented by an uninsured driver will probably like the Government’s plan to assess the argument for compulsory third party insurance.

A report on levels of vehicle insurance in New Zealand has been developed as part of a Ministry of Transport review of the issue of compulsory third party insurance.

A survey of 4000 New Zealanders found that 92.4 per cent have some form of motor vehicle insurance, while only 7.6 per cent of vehicle owners had an uninsured vehicle or did not know whether their vehicle was insured. This is a level similar to countries that have compulsory vehicle insurance.

The Government is considering compulsory third party insurance as part of the development of the Safer Journeys road safety strategy to guide New Zealand to 2020.

Breath-testing the FrenchNews out of France reports that from July 1 all vehicles

travelling on French roads must carry a chemical or electronic breathalyzer test.

The new law has been passed to reduce alcohol related accidents.

About a third of fatal accidents on French roads are attrib-uted to drink driving. In England, alcohol is attributed to about 17 per cent of fatalities and just 10 per cent of road deaths in Germany. But then again, Germany produces better cars.

Anyone driving through France caught without a breath test kit risks a fine of €11 or $17NZD - about the price of a half decent bottle of Pinot - from November 1 when the penalty comes into force.

If this works, the Gendarmes may request criminals carry their own hand-cuffs.

Nissan has extended its D40 Navara range with the introduction of eight

RX badged models to cater to trades people and the

agricultural and forestry sectors.

“These are working utes intended for people who have heavy, dirty gear they need to get to job sites and the wide variety of places our primary industries operate in,” said John Manley the managing director of Nissan New Zealand.

“We have reintroduced a King Cab Well-side model to the Navara RX range for those people who need cab storage space, but prefer the longer tray.”

Not to be outdone by Nissan, Hyundai announce the launch the new-generation i30; a vehicle the company expects will build on the success of the original model thanks to an all new European design.

Hyundai general manager Andy Sinclair says the i30 is the com-pany’s best-selling and most awarded

model globally and the new-gener-ation i30 really ups the ante against its Europeans rivals.

“The i30 is designed and engi-neered at Hyundai Motor Europe’s Technical Design Centre in Rus-selsheim, Germany, and built at our state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Namyang, South Korea,” he says.

“This car changes the game in value in the small car market. It’s going to be a hit with Kiwis. It really pushes the envelope on design, tech-nology and effi cient performance.

Every new i30 comes standard with the Flex Steer system, one-touch triple turn indicators, iPod/USB connectivity and Bluetooth hands free phone system with steering wheel controls, and cruise control. The Elite model adds front heated seats, electric folding outside mirrors, stop/start button, 17” alloy wheels, reversing camera and revers-ing sensors.

Look forward to a review as soon as we get a set of keys here at BD HQ.

Staying in Mantrol

Steve Law is an orchard contractor who regularly carts heavy equipment around.

The 2WD LT Colorado is ideal as it keeps him legal with all the weight on the back, says Steve.

Steve has had his new ute for two weeks and it is his fourth Holden in eight years.

“I just step out of one and into the other. When I was fi rst looking for a ute I went all over town comparing models but to be honest I pretty much just head to Ebbett’s now,” says Steve.

“This is my second Colorado. Before this wagon I had two Holden Rodeos. The Colorado rides as well as a nice car. The fi ve-speed manual gearbox is very quiet and all the bells and whistles are controlled from the steering wheel.”

Steve is talking about stereo controls and blue tooth connectivity controls on the steering wheel.

“The 3.5 tonne towing capacity was a big attraction. I regularly tow a big tractor on a trailer with a mulch-ing machine on board too. On the road it is quite unbelievable and the power of the 2.8-litre diesel has more torque than the 3-litre model I had before.”

A double cab provides more than enough space for fi ve burly blokes.

“Last night we had fi ve guys on board. One of the guys is quite tall and he was impressed with the amount of ample amount of leg room in the back. It’s a very comfortable ride. I do have a car too but you could happily drive the Colorado around town. The cloth trim is very comfortable and you can also adjust the height of the seats. You feel more comfort-able being up a bit. It’s got good versatility and that’s part of what I liked about it. I’ve been very impressed with the ride. It is a very nice vehicle. It isn’t hard like you might expect a ute to be. It is quite smooth. You could use it for everyday driving without too much problem.

Steve has opted for a tough deck as he likes the vis-ibility of a fl at deck when reversing.

The Colorado features full safety specs including driver and passenger air-bags and full curtain air-bags the length of the cab.

The armour is high strength steel and incorporates full-length frame rails. A built in safety cell offers maximum protection in a head-on or side crash. Elec-tronic stability control offers traction from the snow to the paddock and all points in-between.

Ebbett Holden on the corner of Cameron Rd & Wharf St is the home of Holden in Tauranga.

Whether it is the weather, dodgy driving, slips or fl oods, driving

around the Bay of Plenty lately has been fraught with accidents, hazards and general chaos.

On Tuesday, July 24, one person died after a logging truck accident in the Kaingaroa Forest, in the Eastern Bay of Plenty.

Emergency services attended the scene of the fatal accident reported on No.6 Road just before 11am.

It’s believed the truck, which is the only vehicle involved in the accident, crashed 25 metres down a bank.

Police are investigating the cause of the accident.

In a separate accident on the same day, a person ended up in a serious condition following a car crash which closed State Highway 5, near Rotorua.

Ngongotaha Road just north of SH5 and its intersection with Beaumont Road was

closed after a car collided with a power pole just before 11am.

There were reports of 11,000 volt lines being down and a witness at the scene reported them being in a “precarious posi-tion”.

One person was taken to hospital with moderate to serious injuries as a result of the crash.

On the same day, motorists experienced signifi cant delays travelling from Tauranga to Papamoa with one section of State High-way 2 closed due to fl ooding.

NZTA closed one lane between Bruce Road and Domain Road and northbound motorists were diverted down Domain Road, while southbound traffi c continued along SH2.

Bay of Plenty State Highway manager, Brett Gliddon, says due to the heavy rain, surface fl ooding has caused a number of potholes in areas which were resealed late last week.

“Contractors are working to repair the

road, the northbound lane was closed and a short detour kept motorists moving.

“Repairs were carried out as quickly as possible to enable the highway to be restored to two lanes overnight.”

He says slips are likely to occur with large quantities of rain and motorists should be careful when driving throughout the region.

Other road closures affecting Bay of Plenty drivers travelling in or out of the region this week included: SH2 through Athenree Gorge, down to one lane, SH2 through Karangahake Gorge, SH26 through Paeroa, SH26 in Te Aroha and SH25 from Thames to Whitianga.

Katikati College asked parents to pick up pupils early on Tuesday, July 24 because of concerns that fl ooding would close bridges near the town.

A total of nine crashes were reported in the Western Bay of Plenty area on Monday as heavy rain caused fl ooding and made driving conditions treacherous.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing

manager, Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says most of the crashes were caused by people not driving to conditions.

“We had a total of nine crashes around the Western Bay of Plenty area and a number of those were as a result of people just not driving to the conditions.

“There was quite a bit of surface fl ooding around.”

He says people were just not taking the level of care they needed to and “that’s often the way”.

The lower end of Poike Road, near Rox-anne Place, had to close, with businesses in the nearby industrial precinct forced to park on the highway.

Heavy rain also caused the Waimapu Stream to swell and fl ooded the Greerton rugby grounds.

However, the city is expected to dry out after experiencing 50mm of rain on Monday, July 23 and 111mm in a 24 hour period.

If you’re plagued by speeding tickets you might not realise that your speedometer is out of sync

with your tyres.New Zealand land speed record holder

Ray Williams knows a thing or 300 about speed.

Ray set the NZ land speed record in 1996 in a 930 Porsche Carrera nick-named the Ivory Beast from Bahrain.

On the back roads of Reporoa between Taupo and Rotorua, Ray hit 316.926kph, making him the fastest Kiwi in New Zea-land and his record still stands.

“A friend of mine was considering break-ing my record in a Lamborghini. The problem with a Lamborghini is they are so aerodynamic they actually fl y. You couldn’t fi nd a road fl at enough to drive at those speeds in New Zealand. I was airborne a number of times and the Porsche just hugs the road. Even though I was driving in a straight line I had the wheel at full lock a few times after leaving the road. A

Lamborghini would just take off and you’d be picking pieces of it out of the tree tops,” says Ray.

Ray reckons most Japanese import cars are at least 10 per cent optimistic in terms of speed.

“On most of the Toyota Hi Aces there’s a 10 per cent error. So if you are driving 100kph according to your gauges you’re actually doing 110. I fi nd it is the same with Corollas and most Japanese cars out

of the factory read up to 10 per cent pes-simistic or optimistic,” says Ray.

“Camper vans are often deliberately set pessimistic. That’s part of the reason people get frustrated following them. The drivers think they are doing 100kmph, when actually they are doing 90kph. I think this is done on purpose.”

If you change your tyres you can com-pound the problem - larger tyres equal larger errors. The best way to check your speedo is to compare it with a good GPS system. A good sat-nav is more accurate than your gauge. You can also check your settings at VTNZ.

If you do change your tyres there are ways to maintain the integrity of your speedo.

If you are replacing 15 inch rims with 16 inch rims then you want to place a very low profi le tyre on the rim.

A good tyre dealer will be able to help you maintain your speed reading when upgrading your wheels.
