Better Place projectBetter Place is an exciting new project which is part of the Better

Start Bradford family, and is being delivered by Groundwork

North, East & West Yorkshire.

We will be working with families in Bowling and Barkerend, Bradford Moor and

Little Horton over the next few years to develop safer and healthier places for

children under four to play and walk, and increase access to green spaces.

Peter Murphy, Operations Director, Groundwork, said: “We’re looking forward to

getting out in the community where we will be meeting and talking to

families in the area about their needs, hopes and concerns. It’s widely

accepted that a poor environment affects health and wellbeing, and that applies

to babies and small children too. The Better Place project will show how

improving and investing in key features of the local environment can improve

children’s emotional health and fitness and set them up for life”.

Better Place will identify and oversee improvements to local parks and

outdoor spaces with the aim of providing a healthier and happier environment for

babies, young children and families. The project will also find ways to reduce

exposure to harmful traffic fumes for pregnant women and small

children. The project will be delivered in collaboration with Bradford Council,

Public Health, voluntary and community sector groups, local people and other

Better Start Bradford projects.

Details and information on the activities being undertaken by Better Place will be

publicised on the Better Start Bradford website www.betterstartbradford.org.uk &

their facebook and twitter.

To launch the project the Better

Place team need your help in

News 3

My name is Siobhan Dowling,

I represent the Holme Top

ward along with my colleague

Balaal Hussain Khan.

I have recently been appointed as a

Community Councillor in January

2018. I look forward to working in

partnership with Councillor Balaal

Khan and the rest of the Council

members to help improve the area

along with the Ward Officers and the residents to help maintain

a cleaner and greener BD5. I have lived and worked in BD5 all

my life and would like to make a contribution towards

improving the area.

My name is Satnam Singh and

I am your newly appointed

Community Councillor for the

Woodroyd ward alongside Habib

Rehman.

Its a real honour to represent you and I

will endeavour to do my best in

representing Woodroyd and BD5.

I’m a community activist and proud

Bradfordian, I’ve worked on many community projects in the area

and will continue to do so. I aim to speak out for the local people

and look out for the vulnerable members of our community and

most importantly listen to you to improve our lifes.

Meet the New Community Councillors

Dear Readers, My name is Nasreen Khan and l am the Chair of Trident Community

Council in BD5. I wanted to let our readers know what the Community Council have been

doing since the last issue of the BD5 Magazine and future work that will be taking place.

It gives me great pleasure to introduce two new Cllr’s to the Community Council. I congratulate and welcome Cllr Satnam Singh for

Woodroyd Ward and Cllr Siobhan Dowling for Holme Top Ward. The Community

Council and myself look forward to working with them and the new ideas they

have.

If you would like to contact Community Councillors in your wards, please visitour website to find out who your Cllr is: visit http://www.bradfordtrident.co.uk/community-council/

It was an honour and a privilege to be asked to open a new business in the

BD5 area (Manchester Rd) called Fancy Cakes and Crafts. The business owner

was someone that really inspired me for what she has achieved in the eight

years of coming to the country. Her cakes looked and tasted delicious. She

caters to all dietary needs including vegans. The Community Council has been

working really hard providing food parcels to elderly residents that are finding it

difficult to make ends meet due to circumstances beyond their control. I would

like to take this opportunity to thank Inn Churches for always being there and

giving us a helping hand.

Future work will be more gulley cleaning in the Woodroyd, Marshfields, Holme

Top Ward’s & will be taking place in Feb, Mar and April. In the very near future

the Community Council will start the process of bringing Canterbury into the

Bradford Trident Community Council boundary, so keep an eye out for

Community Cllr’s and myself interacting and getting signatures for our petition

to hand to Bradford Council.

Trident Community Cllr’s will also be having surgeries in the local centres

(locations TBC) with people that may require help and advice with problems

they are facing daily. We look forward to meeting you and having a chat.

The community council will be leading on the Anti-Drug Campaign with other

organisations in BD5 too, so watch out for more information and posters.

Future Community Council meetings Schedule 2018:

We have had gullies cleaned in the

Ripley Ward in November 17 and in the

Parkside Ward in December 17.

During this gulley cleaning the majority of the

back gullies were cleaned with the assistance of

the local Community Councillors working in

partnership with Bradford Council Ward Officers

and Wardens. This went really well, we are now

arranging for gulley cleaning to take place in the

Woodroyd and Marshfield Wards.

We had a clean up in Federation Street from

where a lot of Knotweed was removed.

We are currently liaising with Bradford Council,

Bowling Allotments and Garden Society in

looking at improving the planters at the Top

Section of Manchester Road outside the shops.

The Academy opened in 2007 and since then it has grown both in size and ambition. With over 1800

learners from the ages of 2 to 19, the Academy has transformed the community in which it is deeply

rooted.

The majority of our youngsters remain with us into Post-16 and 70% of students progress to higher education each year.

We are a “Good” school as recognised by OFSTED both in February 2013 and December 2017. We are rightly proud that

all aspects of our provision; Early years, Primary, Secondary and Post-16 are consistently good and have been since 2013.

You can read the full report in the OFSTED section of our website. With faith at the heart of all that we do, I am proud to

lead a team of dedicated staff who are enthusiastic about learning, and committed to our young people and their

educational and spiritual journey. We work with a range of partners to ensure that the experience of our young people is

personalised, appropriate and challenging. This year saw the Academy achieve it’s best ever results. Our Post-16 learners

achieved results in vocational subjects that put them amongst the top 10 percent of learners taking these subjects. Our

learners taking the Academic A levels also contributed to improved performance and achieved results that put them at the

national average for all schools nationally. We congratulate these learners of whom 77% have secured University places

including a number at Russell Group Universities. Similarly our GCSE learners were able to maintain and slightly improve

on last year’s performance despite the English and Maths qualifications being revised to make them more challenging. We

had an improvement in the highest grades and a number of learners gained the elusive grades 9, 8 and 7 across English

and Maths. Importantly progress of youngsters is now in line with the national average and we look forward to exceeding

this in the coming academic year.

Mrs Tehmina Hashmi, Executive Pricipal says; “Before I came into the profession I worked as a scientific researcher in the

NHS. I came to teaching 22 years ago and have never looked back. I have spent most of my teaching career in the

Bradford District with the exception of my role as Deputy Headteacher in Manchester at an outstanding comprehensive

school. I’m passionate about education and the difference it can make to life chances having myself progressed from

relatively humble beginnings. It is our mission to ensure that we secure bright and prosperous futures for all the young

people at Bradford Academy. I hope that when you visit us, you can see this for yourself”.

People from across the BD5 area enjoyed an afternoon of festivities over the Christmas period. Elderly

members from the Italian Mission, Parkside Community Centre, lunch club, Truncliffe house and other local

wellbeing groups attended this year’s annual Christmas Lunch.

The room was beautifully decorated with the help of local volunteers, students from

Bradford Academy and Bradford Trident staff who prepared all the tables as well as

helping with the signing in and serving of drinks and meals to the older people. We

would like to thank all Volunteers and staff from Bradford Trident for making this

possible.

We are delighted to announce the opening of a fabulous new cake shop

‘Fancy Cakes & Crafts’ on Manchester Road, between the Post Office and

AK Accountants, just up from Lidl.

Shamsa Bakari (pictured left), who lives locally, opened her doors on Saturday the 20th of

January and is confident that this location will enable her to take her cake baking and

decorating business to the next level. There is no doubt that, following on from her Cake

Decorating Studies at Bradford College, she has fine-tuned her skills and is now producing

the most incredible range of very tasty, freshly baked cakes for all occasions, from

contemporary children’s birthday cakes to classic wedding cakes and plenty in between.

Shamsa is very quick to thank all those who have helped to support her on this journey.

Her family have given her great strength and local friends, such as Harry who entertained

the children on Open Day with his balloon sculpting skills, have also helped to build her

impressive ‘can do’ approach and to keep a smile on her face.

The support of Bradford Trident and The Trident Community Council were also mentioned.

Jonathan Smith, the Trident Enterprise Coach, says that “working with Shamsa has been a

real privilege” and now the shop is open he will be working further with her in developing

marketing materials and wider business contacts. Shamsa says, “It has been great to have

Jonathan’s support and knowing that I have someone locally who I can continue to turn to

for business advice and who can help me network and grow my business is brilliant.”

Nasreen Khan, chair of the Trident Community Council, when performing the official opening said, “I’m so pleased to see a quality

shop like this appear in such a prominent position on Manchester Road, there is no doubt the wedding industry is booming in the local

area and knowing there is someone so professional who can cater for the local market is brilliant. The fact that Shamsa is also a BD5

resident is literally ‘The Icing on the Cake’.
