NRAO CASA and CASA based Pipelines Review CASA (Common Astronomy Software Applications) by NRAO CASA Group in collaboration with ALMA Integrated Computing Team staff at ESO and NAOJ
Logistics
• Demo – Tuesday at lunch time (Ott)
• Travel Expenses – Pick up travel expense voucher; return to Lori with
receipts • Reception/Dinner – Tuesday, starting at 17:30 – El Sombrero Restaurant, map available
• Questions – Brian for the review contents; Lori for the logistics
CASA Review March 5-6. 2013 2
CASA - Scope
• CASA = Common Astronomy Software Applications • Astronomer installable data reduction package • Automatic data reduction “pipeline” (raw data through image) – Facility: Store/retrieve to Archive, QA plots, logs – User: Distributed with CASA, “tweakable”
• Infrastructure for ALMA online system & Archive • Infrastructure (through casacore libraries) for other
observatories • Algorithm R&D prototyping/implementation environment
CASA Review March 5-6. 2013 3
History
1978 AIPS started 1988 Various review committees consider the future of data processing
(AIPS 10 years old) 1991 AIPS++ Consortium 1992 AIPS++ Development start
(Technical development, management turmoil, institutional use, few users)
2003 AIPS++ Consortium disbanded, focus on ALMA/EVLA (AIPS 25 y.o.) 2004 AIPS++ èCASA (Keep C++ libraries, use Python, replace UI) 2011 CASA / ALMA Pipeline combined 2012 End of EVLA construction and ALMA software construction 2013 CASA in routine, widespread use (21), as is AIPS (35)
CASA Review March 5-6. 2013 4
This Review
• Not a technical review • End of ALMA/EVLA construction projects a major milestone;
time to reconsider strategy – What are the major priorities for ALMA and EVLA? – Support any additional telescopes, collaborations? – Change of processing model (manual vs. pipelines vs.
desktop vs. cluster vs. VO …)? – How to position ourselves for SKA?
• Initial conclusions: Tuesday 15:00 – open • Final report: to NRAO Director – public
CASA Review March 5-6. 2013 5
Staffing
• 17.5 FTE (6 sites, 3 continents) • 55% NRAO • 75% CASA / 25% Pipeline

Organization (ALMA) çI am here
Oversight: NRAO CASA Science Steering Committee (CSSC)
• CASA Project Scientist (Ott), ALMA Subsystem Scientist (Brogan), VLA Subsystem Scientist (Butler), at-large member (Fomalont)
• Responsible for “Science” priorities for CASA: – Plan responsibility of group manager (Kern) – Sources: Users (knowledge, helpdesk tickets), science operations,
commissioning, previous lists, meetings – Monthly meetings: development tracking, new priorities
• Provide advice as needed • Core testers
CASA Review March 5-6. 2013 9
Proposal: CASA User’s Committee (CUC)
• More direct input and feedback from users requested (e.g., NRAO User’s Committee)
• Meet face to face one time per year, quarterly (?) by phone • Current CSC members of CUC, chaired by CASA Project Scientist (Ott) • Prefer actual CASA users (students OK) • Reports to NRAO DMSD Head / ALMA ICT-NA Head (same person)
– Or someone else, but want to avoid one committee per continent (hard to prioritize)
– Need broad representation of standing committees (NRAO UC, ALMA ASAC, etc)
– Reports advisory, public • Advice/Comments welcome
