PREPARATION AND POINTERS 101

MOAB, UTAH A GUIDE FROM THE INSIDE

Most people assume that because Moab is in the desert that it’s always hot. Moab is considered the high desert, which means that is not always the case. Spring and fall especially can be deceptive, hot days are not a promise of warm evenings. Bringing a good jacket is like setting up a good insurance policy–not always convenient, but when you need it, you’ll be happy you bothered.

One thing you can depend on in the desert is dehydration. Like a sleeping dragon, you can avoid confrontation by recognizing it exists and not trying to tip-toe around it. Make sure to drink plenty of water. Hold on to your bladder because we’re talking a gallon per person per day. Make sure to take regular drinks, not just when you feel thirsty. To help you regulate your water intake you should make sure you have a good water bottle or hydration pack. Mother Earth recommends you bring a sturdy reusable bottle, but if you have to buy bottled water, she asks that you please recycle. Making sure you have the right shoes to go with your outfit is always super important. This task can get a little more complicated in Moab because there’s a good chance you’ll be spending time both on the water and on the trails. Never fear, some smarty pants once came up with the idea to take a trail shoe and a water sandal and mash them together. Now, there’s a whole world of hiking sandals out there. Many of them can be quite fashion forward, in a rugged sporty kind of way. To avoid packing a whole suitcase full of footwear, we suggest you consider buying a pair of Keen, Teva, Columbia or Chaco sandals. One last note on footwear: We love flip flops in Moab, but unless you are a professional, trained in the art of flip flop hiking, we advise you reserve your flops for dining and pool activities.

Even if you’re not an expert on the sun, there are two things you do know. It’s bright and it burns. Especially in the desert. Obviously it’s important to have plenty of sunscreen on hand, but let’s take things a step further. What if you invested in a long sleeve, light weight UV/UPF protected shirt and a good quality hat (preferably one with a brim to protect the neck and ears)? Since we’re getting all wacky, let’s discuss one more issue: Sunglasses. They are not just for hiding celebrity faces. They were actually designed to protect your eyes—from the sun. Somewhere along the lines, the fashion gurus and knock-off artists forgot that concept. Be a wise consumer and

know that dark lenses do not equal sun protection. In fact, wearing sunglasses that do not contain the proper UV protection can actually be more damaging to your eyes. No one here is claiming to be an expert in optometry, we’re just advising that you do a little research and spend a little extra money for the cause of your peepers that give you the wonderful gift of sight.

Once you start exploring Moab and the surrounding national parks, you’ll be surprised at how much stuff you’ll need to carry. That’s why it makes sense to bring something in which to tote the contents of your Moab survival kit: water bottles, snacks, sunscreen, camera, maps, etc. Your Louis Vuitton bag will work in a pinch, but it’s not really desert friendly. We recommend you bring a suitable daypack. Cheap and cheesy is no problem, as long as you can sling it on your back and keep your hands free for scampering along the rocky trails.

MOAB, UTAH A GUIDE FROM THE INSIDE

Moab RestaurantsMoab, like any other place in the world, offers an abundance of great and not so great dining options. In a town as small as this, advocating restaurants can be a political process that is best avoided. However, recommending dishes that have been known to inspire and dazzle taste buds is perfectly acceptable and if it happens to be mentioned where these dishes can be had, so be it!

BUCK’S GRILL HOUSE Double Cut Cowboy Pork Chops These things are spiced, rubbed, grilled, AND topped in barbecue butter. Barbecue butter! What will they come up with next?

DESERT BISTRO Bistro Gyozas filled with smoked tofu, tahini, Anasazi bean hummus & roasted garlic, served with a chipotle pepper, soy & maple beurre blanc baked brie in pfuff pastry stuffed with sun-dried tomato pesto, served with fresh fruit and crackers. Aren’t fancy dishes always a mouthful to say? Well, start practicing because this appetizer is delicious. Try complementing it with the Gorgonzola Beef Tenderloin- Just the menu description will make you salivate: Gorgonzola crusted filet of Beef Tenderloin with roasted tomato demi-glaze, garlic mashed potatoes and sautéed vegetables.

SABAKU SUSHI • FIERY FURNACE • DELICATE ARCH• DEVILS’ GARDEN • DREAM ROLL • MANGO ROLL• GRILLED CHICKEN OR SIRLOIN ENTRÉE Besides being ‘must see’ stops in Arches National Park, any sushi lover will love these specialty rolls. If you’re more of a ‘social sushi’ person—you know, the type that has spasms at the thought of a piece of cold, raw fish slithering down your throat— the non-fishy options are wonderful.

MIGUEL’S BAJA GRILL Baja Fish Tacos Who would have imagined fresh seafood in the desert? Breaded Mahi-Mahi= Yummy yummy.

MOAB BREWERY Onion Rings What do all brew pubs have in common? … The best onion rings ever!

MOAB DINER Cream of Tomato Soup (Tuesdays Only) Even though it only comes available once a week, it needed to be mentioned—it’s that good.

PARADOX PIZZA Extra-Vegan-Za Pizza This thing is amazing! Seriously, amazing! A basil pesto pizza not garnished, but blanketed with an assortment of seasonal roasted vegetables. If you’re feeling especially naughty, throw caution to the wind and order it with cheese!

PASTA JAYS Chicken Juliana Chicken stuffed with broccoli, capocollo and artichoke hearts, baked in alfredo sauce, served over a bed of pasta. So, right now you’re probably thinking what the heck is capocollo?

SINGHA THAI Mango Sticky Rice Do you know the best thing about Thai food in Moab? …Having the Mango sticky rice for desert. It’s mango, it’s sweet and it’s sticky—‘nuf said.

JAILHOUSE CAFE Southwestern Eggs Benedict Hi-Yah! This breakfast only restaurant will serve you up eggs Benedict that packs a punch…but only a delicious kind of spicy, as opposed to the burn your face of kind of punch.

Want some quick food to hi t the trai ls and go? Here’s a l i t t le insider scoop:

SWEET CRAVINGS DELI & BISTRO - These nice people can whip up the best sandwiches and wraps for a sit-down meal or lunch on the go. And their baked goods are Scrrruuuummptious.

After an adrenaline surge,Everything tastes better.

MOAB, UTAH A GUIDE FROM THE INSIDE

As far as accommodations go in Moab, you are definitely spoiled for choice. There are still plenty of quality hotels, motels, and B&B’s besides what’s on our list. However, in good conscience, we couldn’t promote properties we haven’t experienced for ourselves. Rest assured, the recommendations below are guaranteed to keep the adventure on the trail and not in your lodging experience.

CASH CONSCIOUSFor the folks that just want someplace clean and comfortable to rest their heads.

BIG HORN LODGE The best thing about this Southwest style lodge is that every room has two queen beds. The person who thought of that is definitely a visionary; all situations covered. Need to share a room with the kids? Check, got it handled, double queens. Feeling fond of your travel companion? Check, scooch a little closer, cuddle up on one queen and strew the contents of your suitcase across the other. Starting to feel irritated by too much quality time with your partner? Check that one too. Shove everything onto the floor and have a whole queen to yourself. …Genius!

RED STONE INN From the moment you pull off Main Street this property zings you with that cozy log cabiny feeling, only you don’t have to worry about the plumbing situation. Yep, this one comes with all the modern day conveniences: flushing toilets, mini refrigerator, microwave, high speed internet, and hold onto your hat…television!

Both the Big Horn Lodge and the Red Stone Inn offer swimming and hot tub facilities, laundry, and a handful of pet friendly rooms.

NIBBLING AT THE UPPER CRUSTFor those people who consider the hotel an integral part of the vacation experience but don’t want to break the bank.

HAMPTON INN If you are the type of person whose idea of roughing it is a Hampton Inn… good news, Moab has a Hampton Inn! There are few things a person can rely on in life; fortunately, the Hampton is one of them.

GONZO INN Imagine that you’re a hotel. If you could describe yourself as fun, hip and unique, you would be the Gonzo Inn. You’d be located within walking distance to the Moab Adventure Center, but off of Main enough to find a bit of nature and greenery surrounding your spacious pool. You’d be popular if you were the Gonzo Inn!

BEST WESTERN CANYONLANDS Affordably classy and right in the heart of Moab. Which means you can walk to all the shops and restaurants and not feel like you’ve gotten too much exercise. After you’ve lived up the Moab night life (so, like in an hour or two) you can come back, flop on the comfy bed and take in the tasteful décor of your spacious room.

The Hampton Inn, Gonzo Inn, and Best Western Canyonlands each offer swimming and hot tub facilities, complimentary breakfast, laundry and bike storage and maintenance facilities.

HIGH ON THE HOGGo All out! What the Heck, you’re on Vacation!

SORREL RIVER RANCH If you want to be fluffed and pampered while you’re in Moab, this quiet riverside Utopia is designed to cater to your every whim. Spa treatments, scenery to die for, and a four diamond rating, It’s fabulous, dahling, just fabulous.

RED CLIFFS LODGE A little bit country a little bit red rock and whoa! Cowboy style winery and dinery makes this one down-home friendly resort with all the bells and whistles located right on the banks of the Colorado River.

SUNFLOWER HILL B&B A luxury Inn is what they call themselves and they’re not kidding. Secluded yet close to town the Sunflower Hill offers robes (we love fluffy hotel robes), spa amenities, and 24 hour beverage service and snacks-homemade ones! …Oh yeah and there’s the pool, the hot tub, the spacious gardens and the swanky four diamond rating too.

KICKIN IT CONDO STYLE Looking for that home away from home experience or want to try living like a Moab local for a few days or a few weeks? Perhaps your idea of heaven is being a brisk walk from the golf course? Or maybe you’re travelling as a group? Whatever your situation, it might be a great idea to consider renting a condo or guest house.

Visit www.moabadventurecenter.com/lodging for more information.

CAMPING WITH CONVENIENCES Sure the idea of camping out under the stars and being at one with nature is appealing, there’s something euphoric about sleeping in a tent, even if it’s in your own backyard. However, finding a good camping spot, having to pack water and a camp stove, and trying to convince the family that ‘this is fun’ can often be problematic. Never fear, there’s is always a compromise. Though it’s not rugged Paul Bunyan type camping. Established commercial campgrounds can sometimes make family vacations a heck of a lot easier and more pleasant.

RIVERSIDE OASIS CAMPGROUND AND R.V. PARK This place is so versatile that it lets you be a camper…your way. This is the spot for people who believe hard core camping is parking your R.V. someplace pretty, bunking up in a rustic cabin, or throwing up a tent in a grassy area next to a picnic table. Situated near the Colorado River, this place is as green and manicured as camping in Moab gets.

UP THE CREEK CAMPGROUND Camping right down-town? Get out of here, I don’t believe it! ...It’s true! You can pitch your tent right by a creek under the shade of tall, leafy trees, have the convenience of restrooms and showers, and still be a mere two minute walk from the business district. Talk about the best of both worlds!

CANYONLANDS CAMPGROUND Cabins, tents and R.V.s- it’s like a smorgasbord for campers. It’ right in town, so, if you’ve got feet, you’re set for transportation. Oh, and the best thing, it has a pool!

MOAB, UTAH A GUIDE FROM THE INSIDE

If you’re the type of person who can’t resist a challenge, then we defy you to find a better value in Moab than the Moab Adventure Center. By value we don’t mean cheaper prices, we’re talking the quality of the experience you get for your dollar. Nowhere else can you find our caliber of service, our quality equipment, our impeccable safety record, and our unparalleled guide service all wrapped up in one classy package. (We work really hard to find the most charismatic, knowledgeable, and professional guides this side of Fantasy Island). COLORADO RIVER RAFTING Everyone has different expectations on a river trip, but you can expect “fun” with the rapids on this trip, though not the spine tingling, heart in your throat whitewater of our other rafting trips. This is the perfect trip to sample what it’s all about. The scenery will inspire, the guides will delight, the rapids will invigorate, and the only hot barbecue lunch on the river will impress. You can also opt for the half day trip, if you want only half the fun.

STAND UP PADDLEBOARDING This is one of the newest and funnest ways to cool off on the calmer stretches of the river and canyon. You don’t have to be a guru of balance, it’s more stable than it looks!

WESTWATER CANYON At the right time of year this can be the tumultuous class IV, spine tingling, heart in your throat whitewater. Make your reservations early for this one, because it fills up fast.

HUMMER SAFARIS Not even Hollywood could simulate this incredible experience. You’ll be thrilled by the rugged terrain, impressed by the skillful guides, awed by the fantastic scenery, and wowed by the capabilities of the beefy Hummer H1. If you think you have a fairly good mental picture of this adventure in your mind, enhance it by a thousand times- this trip is that cool. Whether it’s on a two hour, four hour or sunset safari, you just have no idea until you get out there and experience it for yourself.

ARCHES NATIONAL PARK TOURS First, there’s the Arches Fiery Furnace hike. Calling this a hike seems so understated. What would be a better word for exploring pristine sandstone chasms, standing under towering arches, weaving your way through slot canyons, and having the time of your life? Then there’s the Arches Sunset Tour – Sure you could explore Arches National Park on your own. … But why? It’s so unpleasant to drive and rubberneck at the same time. This way, you could have an expert, knowledgeable guide chauffeur you around and fill your head full of everything you ever wanted to know about the area and feed you snacks.

EPHEDRA’S GROTTO CANYONEERING ‘I hike, I explore, I rappel from enormous sandstone arches’. That could be your new online profile once you’ve done the Ephedra’s Grotto adventure. Professional, safety conscious guides make this a truly unforgettable experience that is suitable for all skill levels, but not for the faint of heart, or fearful of heights.

MOAB ROCK CLIMBING Beginners, intermediates, and experts are all welcome; we’ll make sure we harness you to the right wall. Desert rock climbing is much different than you might expect, but don’t worry, we’ll show you the ropes (literally!) so you can scamper, scurry, scratch, climb, crawl or dangle from a cliff with confidence; we’ll never let our guard down when it comes to safety, professionalism, or quality.

MOAB ROPES COURSE Up for a challenge? That’s exactly what it is... go up for a challenge and try not to fall! With every step of the way safely harnessed, you can rehearse freely for your big gig on that crazy TV show you’ve been wanting to try - or just do it to know that you could. Either way, it is a lot of fun to swing, jump, balance and climb in an environment that is made for trial and error - and that’s the fun of it!

MOAB ZIP LINE ADVENTURE Ever wanted to glide just over the sandstone surfaces of Moab like a raven in low flight? That’s what it feels like each time you cross over steep gaps between the sandstone fins on one of Moab’s newest adventures. Be ready to do a little hiking between each flight -

after all, as bipeds our feet outnumber our feathers.

HOT AIR BALLOON SUNRISE ‘Up, up and awaaay in my beautiful, my beautiful balloooon’. …Come on, don’t be ashamed if you can’t get the song out of your head either. The other thing you won’t be able to clear from your mind is the breathtaking perspective as you witness the artistry of the sunrise as it paints brilliance onto the sandstone canyons below.

SCENIC FLIGHT Tom Cruise will not be piloting the airplane, but if you use your imagination as you buzz over Canyonlands and the Colorado and Green Rivers on a one hour tour, you can’t help but feel a little Top Gun-ish …or maybe you can. Either way, seeing the rugged river-cut canyons by air is unbelievable! Plus, every flight guarantees an aisle AND a

window seat.

HALF DAY BIKING ADVENTURES Anyone who knows anything about Moab, knows that it’s the mountain biking Mecca of the universe. Whether you’re a bad apple mountain biker, or barely off training wheels, there’s a perfect trail out

there, just hoping for you to conquer it.

BIKING SUNRISE DOWNHILL Pull yourself out of bed sleepy head, because watching the sunrise over Moab is something extraordinary! Let the rush of the desert breeze blow the sleep from your eyes as you swoop almost effortlessly down the meandering trail and right up to the continental breakfast that waits to congratulate you on a job well done.

JETBOAT EXPERIENCE Oh, the wonders to behold on this lazy stretch of river! You’ll be zooming fast, but not too fast to miss the beautiful arches, petrified forest, the restroom stop, Native American rock art and some fossils. Whether you choose a four hour adventure or a shorter sunset tour complete with a tasty dutch oven dinner, you can’t possibly come away without wearing a big fat cheesy grin.

DINNER AND NIGHT SHOW It’s not cabaret and it’s not dinner theatre. It’s like nothing you’ve ever experienced. After you’ve had your fill of succulent barbecue beef, barbecue chicken, pork, cheesy potatoes, …pause while you wipe the saliva from your face… fresh homemade rolls, baked beans and apple cobbler you’ll have to roll your stuffed self onto the boat that will slowly guide you upstream of the Colorado River. As soon as the night settles in, it’s lights, camera (well, not really because cameras aren’t allowed) and action. The canyon walls are illuminated while stories of Moab’s incredible history carry you back into town. For all you big city types, don’t forget to look up into the night sky and catch the amazing star show!

HORSEBACK RIDING Yippee Ki-Yay! Riding horses through Moab’s exquisite valleys is reminiscent of going back into the old west and isn’t an experience only John Wayne should enjoy. If you like horses and you like phenomenal scenery, you’ll love this adventure!

JEEP RENTAL Millions of people flock to Moab just to get behind the wheel of a Jeep. There’s no reason you can’t live the dream of being a rock crawling, 4x4 trail- tamer too.

MOAB, UTAH A GUIDE FROM THE INSIDE

PET PROTOCOL Nobody will ever love your pet as much as you: but you can give your pooch a fighting chance to earn, if not the love, then the respect and gratuitous pats from would be passersby by keeping to a few simple courtesies. Take a few minutes to learn of the many pet friendly venues in addition to respecting the wishes of those unwelcoming of domesticated critters. Keep your dog on a leash in places where you are likely to meet other hikers. And for goodness sake, wherever you are, if your dog makes a number two near a trail, please clean it up. Poop is not pristine and there’s nothing worse than landing in the squish of a canine landmine.

BE A CRUSADER FOR THE SAKE OF HISTORY Thousands of years ago, ancient Native American people roamed all over these lands. We are fortunate that evidence of these cultures still exist. It’s not uncommon to happen upon a rock art or ruin site and find that some graffiti artist has been there first. Not only is this tragic, but it’s downright infuriating. A lot of damage is caused by arrogance, but much is also done in ignorance. Be aware that oils on your skin cause damage to rock art; so please look but do not touch. Also, carving your name, birth date, significant other’s name, etc, over, near or around these sites is also considered juvenile, damaging and highly illegal.

TO TIP OR NOT TO TIP Just to address the awkward question, yes, tipping your tour guide is customary but certainly not mandatory. Sometimes just getting to go on a vacation is a luxury that breaks the bank and those situations are certainly understandable. However, most guides rely on gratuities to get by; it’s how they make a living. While anything is appreciated, guides often gauge their performance based on the tips they receive. An average tip in this area is 10% of the trip cost. If your guide gave you average service 10% would be appropriate. However, if your guide displayed skill, knowledge, charisma, a bit of that old savoir faire, in some cases, lots of patience and gave you an unforgettable experience, then maybe you would want to give more than an average tip. Likewise, if you had a poor

experience, that should also reflect in your tip.

YOUR MOM’S NOT HERE, SO TAKE CARE OF YOUR OWN TRASH People come from far and wide to see the beauty of Moab—not your discarded trash. Be respectful and hold onto your garbage until you find a suitable trash can.

DON’T BE AFRAID TO LOOK LIKE A TOURISTWear that trusty 35 millimeter camera with pride! Moab is too spectacular not to be documented--Kodachrome or not!

KNOW THE WEATHER CONDITIONS AND BE PREPARED The thing about weather in the high desert is that there’s always a 100% chance of it. Check the weather forecast before you come. If it decides to finally rain while you’re in town, you’ll definitely want to be prepared. Likewise, you’ll be sorry if you only have a suitcase full of denim and sweatshirts if the sun is out in full force.

LEAVE YOUR GRUMPY PANTS AT HOME Travel days can be stressful. The crowds, the pushing and shoving at the airport, the checking and double checking of your luggage, the frenzied feeling of trying to be on time…

You can relax now, take a deep breath, and smile.
