Palm Lake Resort Beachmere Sands residents are definitely emerging from the COVID-19 bubble of 2020 with gusto. Social events are back on the calendar, bringing residents together again to share in some fun and laughs.

Right before Christmas, we enjoyed seeing our ‘model’ residents back up on the Sands Clubhouse catwalk, this time showing off the wonderful threads of the

‘That’s Me’ label. Presented by Margo Mott, the parade gave our most confident residents a shot at supermodel ‘stardom’, while also providing our guests and audience members with the chance to seize the opportunity to pick up a bargain as well.

I type this report to you on another glorious day at Beachmere Sands. Clearly there have been some serious New Year’s resolutions made with our exercise classes brimming with participants. With so many options to choose from, including tai chi, yoga, exercise for seniors, aqua aerobics and line dancing (to recommence soon), it’s really fantastic to see such a variety of activities attracting our residents to exercise and stay healthy. Of course, bowls, golf and tennis are also added to the mix – or you might just like to potter in the Residents’ Garden; I know the staff at Beachmere Sands regularly enjoy the spoils!

The magic of Christmas in the Clubhouse has now been packed away for another year; lights removed from the front gardens and the music changed. The Clubhouse kitchen turned on a magnificent feast just prior to the big day. Plates were brimming with turkey, ham, tasty vegetables and the tummy clincher – the infamous Christmas Pud! The Social Committee also drew a crowd with their “Home Alone” Christmas Day celebration that was a complete success. As for New Year’s Eve – well, I just can’t get past the Voice reference to our “local chemist doing a roaring trade the next day on Panadol and hydrolytes!” Clearly, also a great night to remember?

With January now just a memory, we look to February for the regular array of shopping trips, restaurant visits, golf competitions and even a cruise presentation on the Proud Mary. Plenty of activity, but none more obvious than our Clubhouse extensions. There was a lull in the building activity toward the end of the year which set tongues wagging as to the fate of the building, however, there was nothing to be concerned about! The cinema, gymnasium

RAISING THE BAR

Looking to lend a hand in 2021? The Bar Committee welcomes all new volunteer bar staff because, without them, the bar would not be able to continue to successfully plough funds back into the resort for the benefit of all. As you know, the bar is open daily from 5pm (2pm on Tuesdays). A roster of bar attendants is drawn up each month to share the workload. Anyone keen to volunteer behind the bar must complete a Responsible Service of Alcohol Certificate. This can be undertaken online at the resort’s expense. Contact a Bar Committee member for details.

Looking for a unique gift? The Beachmere Sands Gift Shop might be small in size but it’s HUGE on quality! The creativity and enthusiasm of our Beachmere Sands craftspeople is reflected in the cards, jewellery, purses and bags, paintings, photographs, place mats, towels, wooden artifacts, paper tole pictures and the myriad other handmade items produced right here in the resort grounds. The shop is run by volunteers and is open weekdays from 10-11.30am.

and amenities are now taking shape. We have had designers through to coordinate the soft furnishings with our existing theme and plenty of chat about gym equipment, cinema sound and seating. The next challenge is the relocation of facilities so we can keep everything running and build at the same time!

As you will see in this newsletter, life in Beachmere is pretty much paradise! We have two homes to sell, so if you have friends or family who are currently missing out on a Sands experience, make sure you let them know we would love to have them onboard (and don’t forget the ‘Refer a Friend’ cash reward!)

Until next time, stay safe and well.

Right across our network of Palm Lake Resorts, stretching from here in Queensland to our Victorian counterparts, there are residents coming together every day to play card games. Card games are a brilliant way to connect with likeminded neighbours within resorts, but also to connect with family members of all age groups. From playing Snap with the smallest members of your family, to 500 (for example) with your tweens and teens, to Poker with your own generation, card games never go out of fashion. And the big bonus? A deck of card is such a convenient and portable pastime that doesn’t require a screen or a charger cable. Winning! Beyond the fun, here are some of the other reasons why you might like to take up card games in 2021:

Social and communication skillsCard games require observation and conversations – they provide us with the opportunity to interact with other players and understand their emotions, as well as giving us chances to be honest and clear communicators. Some card games require teamwork to succeed, while others require less focus and provide more opportunities to chat with other players.

MemoryIt goes without saying that flipping cards to match two of the same colour, shape or pattern can be a great way for you to improve or maintain your recognition and memorisation skills, but ‘Memory’ isn’t the only card game that improves our ability to recall information – simply learning and repeating the rules for a card game can help! Card games rely

heavily on short-term memory skills but have also been shown to improve long-term memory and other cognitive functions, too.

Problem solvingWhether your chosen card game primarily involves luck, skill or a mix of both, there are always opportunities to improve your problem-solving abilities. Most card games require you to learn rules and tweak the strategies needed to win, helping you develop your problem-solving skills. This, in turn, will help you better overcome challenges and stress not just while working through the card game, but in your day-to-day life.

Fine motor skillsMaintaining your fine motor skills is key, and card games

are a great way to do exactly that! Much like writing, painting and even playing musical instruments, holding cards work to strengthen your smaller hand and finger muscles, while dealing and sorting them requires you to use your thumb, index and middle finger. Meanwhile, learning to shuffle cards (or practicing your skills) develops the bilateral coordination of your hands and improves control across the palms.

Looking for a regular card game here at Palm Lake Resort Beachmere Sands? Our resident card players meet every Tuesday and Thursday, at 1pm, to play Canasta. Feel free to stop by - they’d sure welcome you to play along.

Here’s the deal.FROM GIN TO GO FISH, SOLITAIRE TO SNAP, CARD GAMES PROVIDE MORE THAN JUST ENDLESS FUN – THEY CAN ALSO OFFER PLENTY OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOU TO DEVELOP A RANGE OF IMPORTANT SKILLS.

OUR RESORT BOWLERS ARE A JOVIAL BUNCH AND THEY NEVER NEED MUCH OF AN EXCUSE TO GET TOGETHER AND HAVE SOME FUN (THERE MIGHT EVEN BE A GAME OF LAWN BOWLS THROWN IN FOR GOOD MEASURE!). CHECK OUT THE ‘RED BOWLS DAY’ THAT WAS ORGANISED BY LES PURDIE (VILLA 171) RECENTLY. PARTICIPANTS WERE REQUIRED TO DRESS IN RED. WHY RED, YOU ASK? WHY NOT!

In the red.

There’s no need to get a sweat up to stay fit – thanks to the many kinds of exercise that can be done in the water, it’s never been easier to cool down and tone up at the same time. Once upon a time, those looking to exercise in the water were limited to swimming laps. Now, with the advent of fitness styles like H2O Pilates and Tai Chi Hydro – not to mention classic aqua aerobics – there is a variety of water-based fitness for everyone.

“Water-based fitness is beloved for its health benefits, and not just by seniors,” says PT Di Clapp, who has been teaching water classes for 30 years. “There are so many styles of water-based fitness available now, all serving different – though equally beneficial – purposes.”

Aqua aerobics is a favourite for Palm Lake Resort residents, and for good reason. Ideal for those who have issues with weight-bearing exercises, aqua aerobics helps you increase muscle strength without straining.

“Aqua aerobics – along with many other styles of water-based fitness – removes the force of gravity which, when combined with the buoyancy provided by the water, helps you feel lighter and nimbler,” says Di.

Forms of exercise that may present complications on land can be made more accessible when performed in the water. Di explains that H20 Pilates, for example, is less cardiovascular based than traditional Pilates, allowing you to better focus on posture, flexibility

and a deep core connection. Aqua aerobics, on the other hand, offers a cardiovascular workout while also encouraging core engagement, muscle strength and flexibility.

“One great benefit of working out in the water is that it keeps you cooler, so there is less risk of overheating,” says Di. “Water also allows for more adaptability in terms of the intensity of your workout. It is very easy to maximise the force of the water resistance to suit your strength, thus tailoring your workout.”

Exercising in a vertical position offers additional benefits, particularly for those with limited neck and shoulder mobility. Keeping your head above the water also allows for greater social interaction and engagement with the music being played, which Di says is one big reason people keep coming back for more.

“To the untrained eye, water-based training can look like it doesn’t take much effort,” says Di. “But there are so many benefits to working with water, and when you do it right, you will feel them.”

Aqua aerobics classes are held here at Palm Lake Resort Beachmere Sands on Tuesdays at 7am.

THE NEW YEAR OFTENS SPARKS RENEWED ENTHUSIASM FOR DECORATING. WHETHER YOUR HOME IS IN NEED OF A SERIOUS DECLUTTER OR IT’S OVERDUE FOR A SPRUCE UP, STUDIO COLLECTIVE’S MELISSA PARK (A CONSULTANT TO PALM LAKE GROUP), HAS THE HOT TIPS.

In style.

Sprucing up your living spaces is a great way to mark the New Year. The best part is, it doesn’t have to take much effort. According to one of Palm Lake Group’s design consultants, Melissa Park, re-vamping your space for the New Year is as simple as one, two, three.

“When it comes to styling, there are three things I always recommend,” says Melissa. “The first is to bring the outside in, the second is to refresh your soft furnishings and the final tip, and arguably most important, is to declutter.”

Connecting your indoor and outdoor entertaining areas is key here in Queensland. Throw open those doors and windows to let the fresh air flow, and ensure your outdoor space is set up for entertaining success – Melissa recommends multi-purpose furniture, for example, to offer flexibility.

One of Melissa’s other favourite ways to ‘bring the outside in’ is to add greenery in the form of plants. While different indoor plants will thrive in different spaces, there are a few safe bets worth trying. Beginner plant ‘parents’ should opt for Devil’s Ivy, Aspidistra elate (otherwise known as ‘cast iron plant’)

and Zamioculcas zamiifolia (otherwise known as Zanzibar Gem or ‘ZZ plant’). Melissa’s second tip – refreshing your soft furnishings – is just as easy to implement. All it will take is the introduction of some brightly coloured cushions, bedding, towels and perhaps even a rug or two to overhaul your space and get your home looking summer ready.

“Introducing these soft furnishings in lighter, brighter colours can easily create a sense of freshness, especially in our warm Australian summers,” says Melissa. “A natural palette teamed with crisp whites, light blues and bright patterns will serve you well this summer season.

“Natural materials work all year ‘round, but particularly in the warmer months. Think breathable, soft textures such as cotton, wool and linen, which will all keep your home feeling cool and inviting.”

But the best way to lighten and brighten your space for the New Year? Declutter! Parting ways with the things you no longer need will give you room to appreciate all that you do have and will help your home to look and feel guest-ready.

New Year, new you.WHILST CELEBRATIONS OF ANY TYPE HAVE BEEN SOMEWHAT SUBDUED THIS PAST YEAR (TO SAY THE LEAST), THE RESIDENTS OF BEACHMERE SANDS DID THEIR UTMOST, ON DECEMBER 31, TO WISH 2020 A SPEEDY FAREWELL.

Amidst a global pandemic and natural disaster, 2020 was truly one to remember for all of the wrong reasons which is probably part of the reason why Sands residents turned out in numbers at The Sands Clubhouse for our New Year’s Eve party. Once again, it was a night of great entertainment, companionship and good times -

complete with dancing. It soon became apparent that some of our residents had been brushing up on their dance moves during lockdown or perhaps it was just the ‘something in the air’. Attendance was up on previous years and many more stayed until the gong to welcome in 2021.
