Beacon Hill Friends House This unique twin home was constructed in 1803-1805 and is one of the earliest homes in Beacon Hill. The land was purchased by attorney Charles Paine from Benjamin Joy. Mr. Paine was the son of Robert Treat Paine, an attorney who servered as counsel for the painter John Singleton Copley. Mr. Joy was one of the Mount Vernon Proprietors, a group of men responsible for developing the pasture lands of Beacon Hill following construction of the State House. This delicately scaled Federal Style mansion is attributed to Charles Bulfinch, noted architect, selectmen and early member of the Proprietors. Mills Whitaker Architects has provided the following services: • Historic Structures Report - funded with matching grant from the Massachusetts Historical Commission. • Facade Restoration - provided architectural services for facade preservation (roofing, masonry, windows, shutters) and prepared grant applications for Henderson Fund and MHC Preservation Projects Fund.
