What is BeAM?

Be A Miracle is an initiative started officially in December,2010, borne of independent, yet mutual dreams ofseveral young people from Nigeria.It is targeted at Young Urban Professionals who arelooking for ways to add value to their lives through

selfless giving and sacrifice; young people who want tobe part of something bigger than themselves.It is also borne out of the aspiration that, while they lookup to God for big breaks and miracles of their own, theymay be used to Be A Miracle to someone else whose

needs are far less sophisticated.Be A Miracle is an exercise in faith and an expedition insacrifice, a movement which is catching on among ageneration that know that it is ‘cool’ to help and touchlives and expect nothing in return.

Find an Area of Need

There is always someone that can usesome help and assistance, there isalways someone that can use a friend.

Start from your local orphanage, askaround in your community for peopleknown to be poor and unable to fend for

themselves, people recently affected insome disaster, robbed or terminally illetc.



Apply thought to solving the

problem

A little thought can help you come up withingenious solutions to puzzling challenges.Let your desire to assist and make animpact drive you towards addressing theneeds of others in ways that most otherindividuals might miss.

Put yourself in their shoes, what sort ofmiracle do you think you would be prayingfor if faced by the same situation? Discusswith friends on ideas on how best to assistthis identified group.



Investigate to make it work

When you decide on the ‘miracle’, make the

needed sacrifice of your time and energy to findout what it would take in practical terms to make itcome to life. The ‘miracle’ should be large enough

to excite others, yet practical enough to beachieved. Don’t be afraid to dream big for the

group and be sure to pass on your excitement.

It may help to hold a brief interview with someone

that is close to the target group or the person incharge. Do not be afraid to ask leading questionsthat will reveal needs bigger than you envisioned.Always try to see beyond the obvious.



Tell friends who share your

passion

Involve a couple of friends who you knowwill be interested in making a difference forthe selected group, then involve a fewothers all the same. Help usually comesfrom the most unexpected quarters. Do notbe skeptical about talking to total strangers,but never ask for cash!

Explain your ‘miracle’ to your friends andgive all of them a role to play. Explain tothem how their role is important to makingthe miracle come through.



Handle objections diplomatically

There will always be objections, whetherwhile sharing the idea or when it comes toothers’ implementing their respective parts.

Learn to handle objections diplomaticallyand understand that everyone may not feelas passionate about the project as you do.

Avoid the temptation to come across as

‘Holier than thou’, ‘cos deep down,everyone wants to do more, but somegenuinely can not.



Initiate through action

Begin to take concrete steps that commit youto making the ‘miracle’ come through. Using aspecific date of delivery is always a great wayto drive your team’s results. Book an

appointment with the group you want to assist,and try everything within your power to stick toit.

Confirm the availability of others who have tobe present at the time of presentation and try

to use their various assigned tasks to remindthem as the day approaches. Follow up and coordinate effectively, never

losing sight of the total picture.



Never lose focus of your goal

In the days that lead up to yourpresentation, never lose focus on the mostimportant aspect of the day: ‘the miracle’.That should also guide what you spend

your time doing. When the event comes, never lose focus of

your goal or try to make it about you… itsabout them, and its about the miracle.

Always remember that the best miraclesare unspoken. Do not try to elicit aresponse from them either, let thetestimony come to you… someday!



Grow the idea by sharing your

story

Share your story… not to demonstrate

how your DNA might be a match withMother Theresa’s, but to show others

how little acts by a few concernedpeople can truly be a miracle for someothers.

Get permission from facility (a formal letter may be required in somecases)

Find out number of children/demographics Take care of:

Music (Get a Professional DJ if possible) Food (Buy disposable plates and cutlery, brand them and distribute around

guests who will be coming, let each bring food for a few kids) Drinks (Buy an assortment of flavored drinks for the kids)

Plan for gifts Kid-Builders(Toys, Musical equipment, books, etc) Essentials (Clothes, Food, Infrastructure, etc)

Plan for the Memorable Mascots (Father Christmas, Barney, etc)

Personalities (Popular people, Musicians, Stars, etc) Organisers

T-Shirts (Your group of friends can use T-Shirts to mark the day) Pictures (Allowing your friends to be the media for the day with their

blackberries n camera phones adds to the excitement)

Lessons Learned

- Designate individuals to handle specifics tasks on the day, eg giving

out gifts, taking pictures n videos, MCing, etc

- Meet in a central location or put up directions to the venue for peoplewho do not know the place. Simple paper pinups at the junction will

go a long way.

- Get to the venue an hour ahead of time, if serious arrangements need

to be made… however, African time is almost unavoidable in Nigeria.

- Always maintain additional funds to buffer in case one or two peopledo not redeem their pledges on time.

- Working with committed people is non negotiable.

- Make arrangements for cleaning up with the hosts.
