2011 Made In Alaska Workshops

J A N U A R Y 2 0 1 1

The official newsletter of the MADE IN ALASKA program

Bear Necessities

Following is the workshop agenda:

2PM -- Made In Alaska Overview and Any Guest Speakers

This section covers details of the Made In Alaska Program

and any changes we have made for the new year. We will

also use this time for brief presentations by other business

support organizations who wish to speak, i.e. SBDC, Buy

Alaska, Chamber, etc. Dana Reese will lead this hour.

2:45PM – Expanding Your Sales Area

A survey we conducted about two years ago indicated that

the biggest impediment to business growth of our permit

holders was opportunities to sell their product. They had

saturated their local marketing area and were still in need of

expansion. We will discuss several ways to expand your

sales area along with the related responsibilities, costs,

hazards and opportunities. Bill Webb and Dana Reese will

speak and monitor this hour.

3:30PM – Social Media & Internet Update

Twitter and Facebook have become everyday language

throughout much of the world. The unique feature of using

a multi-country media to reach targeted local audiences is

amazing and is improving and growing every day.

Meanwhile, other services appear that offer promises of

even more. Olya Semiryazhko will lead this hour and relate

our experiences to you. Bring your curiosity and your

questions. A lot of the new social media is FREE…right

price, eh?

Short meal break

5PM – Town Hall Meeting

Because we deal with over 1,000 small Alaska businesses

government and private enterprise officials often ask us

what is going on in the Alaska small business community

and what do our small businesses need to grow and

prosper. Also, our experiences with workshops over the

last decade have shown that just meeting and talking

with each other often brings out problems as well as

resolutions. This hour will simply be a discussion about

how everyone is doing business wise. What hurts; what

helps? Bill Webb will lead the discussing buy the permit

holders should dominate the hour…more if needed. The

staff will keep notes and pass any recommendations

along to the proper people for consideration.

6PM – Digital Photography

Each permit holder should bring one or more items to the

workshop to be photographed as well as your own digital

camera (and operator’s manual) to enable us to get a

good photo of your product for our website and your

marketing use. Olya Semiryazhko and Dana Reese will

conduct this hour starting with a discussion of how to

take good photos that is then followed by a hands-on

work session when you and our staff take photos of your

product. We will take our shots of your product back to

Anchorage and “clean them up” in Adobe Photoshop and

mail them to your on a CD for your use. We do ask that

you limit your products to two or three at the most and

they be stickered with the Made In Alaska logo. We have

purchased a new camera this year that will allow us to

take short videos of moving objects should this fit your

needs.

Made In Alaska Workshops are open to anyone and are

free of charge. We do not photograph any products that

are not certified and stickered Made In Alaska or Silver

Hand products.

2011 Made In Alaska Webinars

Webinar -- Web conferencing is used to conduct live meetings, training, or presentations via the Internet. In a web conference, each

participant sits at his or her own computer and is connected to other participants via the internet.

Alaska’s vast distances and remoteness makes workshops time consuming and very expensive. While we like the closeness of a

workshop and the ability to get to know the permit holders and their communities we have been restrained in presenting important

information to all permit holders. The past two years we have very successfully used Webinars to successfully communicate in a

cost efficient manner. This year we will present the following five Webinars on Wednesdays from 1PM to 2PM:

Every year since 1991 one outstanding Made In Alaska permit holder was nominated and

selected to receive the prestigious award of Manufacturer of the year. Past recipients of

the Manufacturer of the Year award were selected based on the company’s time in

business, community involvement, product originality, employment practices/job

creation, and the challenges met.

We currently have only 5 nominations for the Made In Alaska Manufacturer of Year

2010 award, and we would welcome more! Anyone may nominate a current Made In

Alaska permit holder and self nominations are very much in order and welcomed.

Nominations are to be made by letter, email or fax to our office. Deadline for all

nominations is 4:00PM, January 15, 2011.

Please provide as much supporting information as possible as to why you think the

business you’re nominating should win. Photos are very helpful.

Alaska Manufacturers of the year

January 19 – AMBIT by Amanda Myers

Amanda will explain in detail this low cost internet site that is available to Alaska Businesses and

give details as to how to get started and why.

January 26 – Color Forecast by Dana Reese

Recognizing current trends in colors can significantly increase our sales of consumer as well as

industrial products. Dana is researching how to find out what’s in…and what’s out…color wise

each year. We hope to make this an annual January Webinar.

February 2 – What’s New in Marketing by Olya Semiryazhko

Olay will detail the new marketing media and methods that are currently helping to sell products.

From new social media to gorilla marketing it should be interesting to hear what works and why.

March 2 – Creating a Print Ad Campaign by TBD

We have invited the Anchorage Daily News to provide an experience speaker to suggest how an

effective sales campaign can be conducted on a tight budget using small ads.

March 16 – Insurances and Licenses You May Need by Bill Webb

We are often asked “what do I need” and Bill will make every attempt to not only tell you what

you need by where to find it and how much it will costs.

Reservations for the FREE

webinars may be made by

calling 272-5634 or email

[email protected].

Webinars are open to the

public.
