Bear Pond Currents
BPIA, P.O. Box 4 North Turner, ME
The newly formed Bear Pond Protection Committee, along
with Jeff Stern from Fiddlehead Consulting, is well under-
way in the effort to identify and repair erosion trouble
spots. The committee received five applications identify-
ing environmental problems by the deadline of October 31,
2010. (Rivet, 17 Beach St.: Pelletier, 27 Beach St.: Beedy,
57 Beach Way: Camp Berea, 113 Bear Pond Road: Weed, 54
Garden Drive).
In November the Town of Turner completed work on
Beach Street which included the Rivet and Pelletier ero-
sion problems. The work involved gravel, grading, ditching,
plunge pools/retention basins, new culverts and rip rap
work. The Beach Street area is now much improved. The
Beedy erosion problem will be completed before our first
BPIA meeting. The Weed project is currently being re-
viewed by Jeff Stern and the Code Enforcement Officer
for the Town of Hartford.
The Camp Berea project was completed on Saturday June
4, 2011. The work involved many Camp Berea volunteers,
directed by Wayne Farrington, and our protection commit-
tee members. More than twenty 10"x10" Hemlock beams
were installed on the hillside to prevent water from run-
ning into the pond. Thirty yards of loam were spread be-
hind the beams with the help of Dick Bray and his Kubota
tractor. The entire area was then seeded and covered
with hay (see pictures on page 2). This project was indeed
a success and should prevent any further erosion.
Our committee will give a complete update on all projects
and finances at our first BPIA meeting on June 26th.

At the August 2010 meeting, members approved $3,000.00 from the Protection
Fund to be used for erosion problems that directly affect the health and well-
being of Bear Pond.
A new committee called the Bear Pond Protection Committee was formed. The
committee consisted of Chair Pete Pilsbury, President Mike Gordon, Dick Bray,
Kent Mitchell, Willie Weed, and professional consultant, Jeff Stern of Fiddle-
head Environmental Consulting.
The purpose of the Committee is to act in the best interest of Bear Pond and
its future protection by overseeing on a priority basis the use of the approved
monies for the repair of erosion problems.
Last fall all residents of the pond received an application for a grant to repair
erosion problems that were adversely affecting the pond water quality. The
committee accepted applications for grants from homeowners who identified
erosion problems on their land. After all applications were reviewed, the com-
mittee awarded several grants based of severity, cost, labor and time con-
straints.
Pete Pilsbury and his Protection Committee have been busy all Fall and Spring
and will have a comprehensive report of the applications approved, the progress
made to date, and the plans for the future.
