Elements of the Plan:

• The mission of the Beaumont Independent School District, as the unifying force of the community, is to guarantee that our graduates possess the necessary skills, values and knowledge to compete successfully as productive citizens in a diverse global society through an educational system characterized by the Optimum application of technology.

Technology Mission Statement:

Technology Needs:

• Our STaR Chart data has not been trending upward towards target technology. We have maintained numbers in the developing technology range, but we need to provide better support to help our educators and administrators move from developing technology to advanced technology and target technology.

• We need to provide more information/media literacy training for teachers and students.

• We need a more structured approach to sharing out Internet Safety resources with staff, students, and parents.

• We need to focus more on having administrators model the use of tools rather than just explaining what these tools can do.

• In order to allow our students and teachers to maximize productivity we need to create an avenue for them to use personal devices safely on our network.

• Goal #1: Facilitate the evaluation and management of technology initiatives, technology infrastructure, and technology staffing.

• Goal#2: Improve student learning and achievement and teacher effectiveness through the seamless integration of technology.

• Goal#3: Develop opportunities for community involvement in technology education and planning.

• Objective#1: Design, install, and maintain the technology and telecommunications infrastructure at every campus to ensure equitable access for all students and staff.

Strategies: Continue to centralize campus server functions to improve support and efficiency of services.

Continue to virtualize servers in order to provide increased redundancy for server hardware.

Replace or reposition obsolete infrastructure devices on a refresh cycle to ensure the most reliable system possible.

Develop the capacity to move to an open source virtual desktop model for workstations.

Provide secure wireless access to the Internet for student/teacher owned devices at every campus

Strategy: Provide lesson plans and supporting resources that integrate technology into the core subject areas.

Construct a Responsible Use Policy (RUP) to replace our existing Acceptable Use Policy (AUP).

Build the capacity to host digital portfolios for our students and create an avenue for them to take their portfolio with them when they leave the district.

Revise current Technology Applications course offerings and curriculum, guided by student and staff requests.

Utilize data collected from eight grade assessment to guide technology lesson plan development.

Three Year Fiscal Plan Ideas

•Add two new wireless mobile labs (four carts of 16 each) to the high school to take advantage of the existing infrastructure and increase student access to technology.

•Add a wireless mobile lab to each of the middle schools to take advantage of the existing infrastructure and increase student access to technology.

•Hire one full time district technology assistant in a quest to reach Dr. Thomas’ ideal situation.

•Allocate $30,000.00 for professional development.

• Create a maintenance budget. This budget sets aside money for repairs and upgrades during the transitions. This fund also allows the district some maneuverability.

Year One 2011-2012

• All elementary buildings will receive 30 desktop computers for their labs.

• All elementary buildings will receive 10 desktop computers for their media centers.

• Each elementary will receive presentation hardware for their lab.

• Hire one full time and one part time technology assistant to meet Technology Directors needs.

Year Two 2012-2013:

• Incorporate money to maintain all three hires, professional development, and maintenance.

• Create a line item providing funds to market BISD’s technology successes and develop new ways to generate new funds. This money could be used to develop partnerships or possibly to promote a future technology millage.

• Evaluation of the district Technology Plan will be a systematic, ongoing process. Beaumont ISD's STaR Chart results for each teacher and each campus will be used to help the district assess its progress toward meeting the goals for the Long Range Plan for Technology. All aspects of the plan will be evaluated formally each year in May. The Technology Planning Committee, under the direction of the Director of Information Technology Services, will be responsible for the ongoing evaluation of this plan and will use the indicators given for each goal and objective. A report will be given to the Superintendent and the Board of Trustees after the formal evaluation occurs.

• Currently the Career Technology Department has formal agreements with Lamar Institute of Technology, Lamar State College of Port Arthur, Lamar Orange, Houston Community College, Lee College, and Texas State Technical College.

• Students also have an opportunity to enroll in technical courses at LIT in the Petrochemical Plant Processes and Health Science Technology programs.
