…is probably our favorite school day. Beaumont opens our doors and our hearts to 150 elementary school children from urban Community School and archbishop lyke School. it’s a very busy afternoon!

as soon as the children step off their bus, they’re partnered with a Beaumont “elf,” who guides them through the dozens of activities presented by student clubs and organizations throughout the school. Classrooms are filled with activities - face painting, crafts, “shopping” for parents and siblings, a hands-on gift-wrapping station, games, plus cookie decorating and a healthy snack in the cafeteria. Children have the chance to visit with Santa, get their photos taken, and thanks to the mothers’ Guild, every visitor received a wrapped book to keep as their own gift.

the students, staff and faculty alike all pitch in to help entertain and work with the children. at the end of the day we’re a tired but happy crew… and we can’t wait for next year.

Dear Alumnae, Parents, and Friends,

The first weekend in November is one I will never forget!

Thursday, November 8th, the girls traveled to Wright State University to play in the Final Four Volleyball State Championship. Our opponent was Columbus, St. Francis de Sales. How exciting to watch the “Blue Streaks” overtake the “Stallions” in 4 games! The victory signaled an advancement to play on Saturday.

History was made for the first time in Beaumont’s existence with a victory that special Saturday. We played the Norwalk “Truckers.” The stands were packed with students, parents, alumnae and friends rooting for the Blue Streaks. Best out of five games – and of course we went to the wire, winning the fifth game and claiming the crown of victory.

It was a challenging road to success – yes, challenging and exciting. During our banner raising on December 21, it was wonderful to see another banner grace our gymnasium along with the sixteen from track and seven from cross country.

Congratulations girls and Coach Royer! We are so proud of you!

The entire volleyball season is also a life lesson for all of us on winning and losing. In life, we all encounter and will encounter victories and losses. We need to learn through these events to win with class and lose with grace. Our team set the bar for all of us!

Sincerely,

“I loved being at Beaumont, although the four years all run together,” she says. “One thing that sticks in my mind is Sister Susan Mary and Sister Maureen Grady teaching American Studies – English and History together. They were fabulous teachers and that was the first time intellectually I understood that things were interconnected. In that class I went from student to scholar. I also remember Sister Maureen pulling me aside and telling me to think about what I was saying. She told me ‘With leadership comes responsibility, and the girls listen to you.’ No one had ever said that to me before – or since,” Mary Jo says. “I’ve never forgotten it.”

She earned an undergraduate degree in Political Science from Miami University of Ohio. After graduation she traveled, worked as an International student advisor and taught English as a second language. In Seattle she met her future husband, Mohammed. He was accepted as a Ph.D. candidate at The Ohio State University, and they moved to Columbus where Mary Jo earned her J.D. from the Moritz College of Law at OSU. Currently, the family lives in University Heights. Their sons, graduates of St. Ignatius, are both in college, Alek at Miami and Noah at Marquette.

Mary Jo was in private practice, with Beaumont as a client, for several years before she accepted a position as the Director of Human Resources for Great Lakes Cheese, headquartered in Hiram, Ohio. She joined the Board of Directors three years ago, and became the Chairman in 2012. She is the second Beaumont alumna to serve as Board Chair; the first was Maria Coyne ’78, who served from 2003 to 2007.

Mary Jo talks about the accomplishments of Beaumont alumnae as well as the deep connection she has with her classmates to this day. “A lot of people can’t understand how we remain so

close to our high school friends,” she says. “Things change, but your core is still the same, and it’s vital to have these friendships from an important time in your life.”

“The Beaumont experience grounds people as they move on. It’s difficult to tell prospective parents this; I mean how do you ‘sell’ values? There are so many great alternatives for girls’ education in the area, and I don’t know what it’s like to go to those schools, but it feels to me, and from women I’ve met, that the service and the spiritual piece at Beaumont is what makes the difference. There are moments of insight, of spiritual experiences that matter – from the small masses, to class retreats, and the focus on prayer, even before you run off and play volleyball or something. These are the experiences that are integrated into your life.”

As the Chairman of the Board, Mary Jo’s duties include overseeing those who maintain and promote enrollment, student academic and scholarship standards, adherence to the mission as an Ursuline-operated organization, as well as fiscal responsibility by keeping an eye on the budget. “We are greatly blessed to have a talented and enthusiastic alum to lead Beaumont at this juncture of our history,” says Sister Gretchen Rodenfels, OSU ’65, President of Beaumont School. “I am honored to work with her in advancing the mission of Beaumont.”

Mary Jo encourages alumnae to think about ways to support Beaumont, from sending their daughters here to participating in alumnae events, as well as financially supporting the school. “Women my age with resources can insure that generations of girls come after us. Now is the time to build financial support through the annual fund; without alumnae, we can’t survive.” She also encourages graduates to return for events, their reunion, or just for a visit.

mary Jo paulett toumert is a wife, mom, an attorney running a busy human resources department, and currently she is Chair of the Board of Directors for Beaumont School.

As parents, you have made an important choice in your daughter’s formation. I thank my parents for choosing Beaumont for me. It was here that I made the friends that I still have today. It was here that I learned about leadership and intellectual curiosity and a global point of view. It was here that I was introduced to the idea that to whom much is given, much is expected. Over the years that have followed, it is what I gained here that has formed me as a woman, as a wife, as a mother, and as a faithful servant of God.

Of course, I received a great education and used that as a foundation for further academic and professional success. Lots of schools provide a good education. But few have the double shot of a great education and an

unshakeable foundation of spirituality and morality. We expect our children to enter the world with more than just knowledge and skills. We expect them to enter the world prepared to lead and to serve.

How lucky these girls are to have such a place. It may take some time for them to understand the sacrifices you and others have made to make Beaumont possible. It may be difficult for them to know how important the adults who know them, and many that don’t, think Beaumont is in their formation. I don’t suppose a kid can know that we adults are investing in them because the future of our community and our faith depends on them. But we know that our parents’ investments in us touched not only our lives but the lives of all those around us.

“I think when people come back to Beaumont they see what Sister Susan Mary tells me – the girls today are not different – they’re teenagers trying to figure life out. They’re the same girls we were – maybe even better.”

Beaumont’s Board of Directors was established in 1987. Last fall, on October 2, over 60 people gathered to celebrate the Board’s 25th anniversary. Past and current Board members met in the St. Ursula Lobby, to mix and mingle with friends and colleagues, to look back over the accomplishments of the last two decades, as well as to look forward to the work yet to be done.

It was a special evening, and Beaumont expresses its inordinate gratitude to this talented group of people for their care, dedication and support over the years.

Beaumont’S 15th annual GolF ClaSSiC

In September, over 50 parents, alumnae and friends of Beaumont enjoyed lunch and the links at Acacia Country Club for the annual golf outing, which supports Beaumont’s scholarship funds.

The 2013 Golf Classic is Monday, September 9 at The Country Club in Pepper Pike. The Chair is Maureen Lamb ’73. All golfers welcome. (Sponsors welcome too!) Look for more information in summer, or call Mary Kelley Ebner ’79 at 216.325.7326.

Beaumont staffers regularly visit alumnae in Chicago and Florida, so why not take a ‘staycation’ and reconnect with alumnae on the west side? Last October at the Westwood Country Club, west-siders were invited to mix and mingle, reminisce and also hear about current students and plans for future Beaumont students.

The evening was full of new connections and old friends. To hear about special events in 2013 and beyond, please be sure we have your email and current mailing address. Contact Alumnae Manager Mary Kelley Ebner ’79 at [email protected] or call 216.325.7326.

our Championship Seasonthe season began like all Fall Sports seasons, in august with practice. a lot of practice. it wasn’t a perfect season. there were losses. there were injuries. the team worked through them. By october it was apparent it was a winning season as the Blue Streaks advanced game after game winning the Sectionals, then Districts, then regionals. But no one could have predicted the final outcome: a championship season. For the first time in the school’s history, the Beaumont Volleyball team won the State Championship.

“There’s something to be said for when a team does anything for the first time,” says Athletic Director Sister Erin Zubal, OSU. “There’s a natural build up, an energy, and there’s something just so great about that. The coaches were excellent in not letting the team get too caught up in winning. The season wasn’t won by that last spike in the last match; it was working on each match as a journey to get to that state title.”

The Blue Streaks beat Central Catholic for the Sectional Title, then Revere and Chagrin Falls for the District, Mentor, Lake Catholic and Canfield for the Regional Title, and finally, they beat the Norwalk Truckers for the State Title.

The final record for the season is 20 wins and 7 losses. Competing coaches were quoted in local media as admiring the Beaumont team’s talent and strategy. They pointed to the fact the team had no ace, but a string of excellent servers and hitters. The Blue Streaks earned admiration for their discipline, their coaching and their overall firepower on the court.

“I can’t say enough about [Head Coach] Pat Royer and his staff,” Sister Erin continues. “Pat’s worked very hard over the 13 years he’s been here. His organization and communication skills have been very focused. Our assistant coaches are the very best they can be.

Their genuine care for the wellbeing of each student athlete drives them. Checking on academics and girls who are injured – it’s all a team effort that Pat takes very seriously.”

“[The championship] is a great accomplishment for the school, not just the team,” Royer told Sun Press reporter Brian Lavrich. “The whole school is part of the team. …The way they support us, it’s just fantastic. We love the support. It’s always there.”

“When you are lucky enough to be led by such a good man as Pat Royer, the girls recognize their good fortune,” team parent and alumna Ann Stevenson

Bornhorst ’81 wrote in an email. “He is their champion. He is not trying to win for his own ego. He takes pride in their accomplishments rather than taking pride in himself, and the girls naturally want to make him proud as a result.” Pat Royer was named Coach of the Year by the Cleveland Plain Dealer for their 2012 High School Fall Sports All Stars.

The support Coach Royer references was evident every time the team played. For the State Championship, the school rented a bus to take students to Dayton where the matches were held on Saturday, November 10 at Wright State University’s Ervin J. Nutter Center.

Sister Erin used Facebook, Twitter and e-mail to keep family and fans updated. On November 7, before leaving for the Final Four, the Volleyball team engaged in the tradition of racing through the school, with students lining the halls to cheer them on. And on December 21, the entire school was present as the team got the chance to raise their banner, where it will hang in the Beaumont gym, both to celebrate this year’s team and to inspire future teams.

Sister Erin has been Beaumont’s Athletic Director for about six months. Previously a theology teacher and Campus Minister at Beaumont, she was asked to fill in as assistant AD for the last part of the 2011-12 school year by Principal Mary Whelan and Athletic Director Lori Longo. When the new school year started, the director, Lori Longo left to pursue other opportunities, and Sister Erin found herself the new AD. (See her profile, page 9.) She brings her training as a social worker and her beliefs in social justice to her new set of duties.

“Being a justice person, I struggle with the amount of money we spend on

athletics, when I know there’s so much need in the world. And we strive to find a balance. We are called to use the gifts we have and many students have the gift of being strong in both athletics and academics. We educate them in the Ursuline tradition, and help them become the best student athletes they can be.

“Strong team players go on to do good things,” she continues. “They’re better leaders, better co-workers, better family members. They’re strong in tough times. They could be losing by 40 points but they still hold their heads up and try. They will bring those skills and experience to the next thing they do – whatever they do. Athletics rounds out that whole person.”

When asked about what’s next, Sister Erin mentions a newly formed Gymnastics team and she is considering adding Bowling to the roster of winter sports. “The State Title is a team effort from everyone who helps with warm-ups to the girl who puts the final spike down. Every team brings new dynamics. We are expecting continued success, whatever that looks like.”

“at Beaumont we educate women for life, leadership and service. Beaumont athletics compliments this mission well as we foster strong student-athletes who can win with class and lose with grace.” So says Sister erin Zubal, oSu, Beaumont’s new athletic Director.

Originally from the Youngstown area, Sr. Erin attended Ursuline High School in Youngstown, then Ursuline College in Pepper Pike, graduating in 2005 with a BA in Social Work. She went on to get her Master of Community Development/Social Science Administration from Case Western Reserve University. While an undergrad, Erin had two internships; one with the Inter-Religious Task Force and one at the Cuyahoga County Jail, the two experiences connected by Erin’s overarching dedication to working for peach/justice issues in this country and abroad.

After graduating from Ursuline, she worked for a year as a Social Worker for the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s office, as a liaison for incarcerated women, coordinating support services such as parenting classes and AA meetings. Her path as a social worker changed in 2007

when she was asked to become part of the teaching staff at Beaumont and share her passion for social issues. She became a teacher, and after two years, she became the co-director of Campus Ministry, alongside Sue Riley.

While a senior at college, Erin first inquired about joining the Ursuline congregation. She spent three years in preparation that included canonical study, ministry, and service before taking her temporary vows. Throughout the changes in her job responsibilities her dedication continued, and just one year ago, in January 2012, Erin professed her perpetual vows at a Liturgy held in the Chapel of the Most Holy Trinity at the Ursuline Motherhouse.

Last July, Principal Mary Whelan asked Erin to fill in as Assistant Athletic Director for the fourth quarter of

2011 – 2012. That assignment morphed into a full-time position as Athletic Director for Beaumont School for the lifelong sports fan; the Ursuline High School student who played softball and basketball and the Ursuline College student who played softball and golf. In her brief time as AD, Erin has brought a renewed sense of organization and mission to the office and has excelled at promoting working with the Athletic Boosters on campus and online.

“My training in peace/justice continues to drive how I do my job,” Sister Erin says. “I’m here to serve our constituents – our students – and be a good co-worker. I’m here to be with the student athletes. If I don’t have a connection, I don’t know what they need, and that’s not being a good leader. I look forward to doing the work of the day and to continue to vision and create a balanced, quality athletic department.”

The faces of yesterday, today and tomorrow are rooted in tradition.

The faces of Beaumont are many; each one beautiful, unique and diverse. They belong to our students, their family members, faculty, alumnae and dear friends. The faces of Beaumont are those here now and those that have been a part of Beaumont’s 162-year legacy, beginning in 1850.

Over this vast period of time, one thing has remained true: Beaumont changes the lives of its students. Beaumont’s environment, inspired by the Ursuline spirit nurtures, educates and empowers girls to become young women. Our world demands the self-confident leaders that Beaumont molds. Service, leadership and academic excellence are the cornerstones of a Beaumont education.

The Beaumont Annual Fund is a critical part of the operating budget at Beaumont School. Gifts help us bridge the financial difference for many families and provide the monetary support they need to attend Beaumont School. It is so important that we continue to provide a high school experience for young women that is rooted in the Catholic faith, provides a challenging academic curriculum, and offers a multitude of opportunities for involvement in athletics, clubs and service to our community.

Your support of the Beaumont Annual Fund will help make a Beaumont education possible for any young women who dream of making a difference in the classroom, on the field, in a corporation, or by serving the community. There is nothing a Beaumont student can’t do if she sets her mind to it!

Students and alumnae will be calling Beaumont Alumnae during the school’s Phonathon event in February. If you have not already made a donation to this year’s campaign you might be called by one of our volunteers who will be asking you to support Beaumont and the Annual Fund Campaign. We hope you will take the time to talk when they call!

Donations to the Annual Fund Campaign can also be made online. Visit the Beaumont School website at www.beaumontschool.org and select the Giving to Beaumont tab and Give Your Gift Now. If you would like to make a donation over the phone, please contact the Development Office at 216-321-6265.

All donations received by June 30, 2013 will be acknowledged in the Beaumont Annual Report, which will be mailed in the fall of 2013. Add your name to the list of your classmates, fellow parents, past parents or grandparents who continue to support Beaumont School.

Remember, every gift counts for every girl! Donations can be sent to:

The Drama Club presented Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew with a gender-bending twist. With a cast of 12 and a crew of 23, students created the sets, lighting, costumes and makeup. The look of the production was inspired by science fiction films and television shows of the 1960s, and was set on a future world. Congratulations to the entire cast and crew of Shrew on a job very well done.

Beaumont is one of eight Greater Cleveland private high schools that make up the Veale Youth Entrepreneurship Forum. The Foundation aims to inspire budding entrepreneurs with educational opportunities. A team from Beaumont will be submitting a business plan to a competition sponsored by TiE (The Indus Entrepreneurs). In December more than 35 students attended special workshops over two days to gain information about

St. ann hall & Garcia music Studiotwo important rooms received some tender loving care by the way of renovations over the summer, in Beaumont’s historic art wing, originally a dining hall/trophy room and aviary of the painter estate. the old theater, dubbed a 25, served as a practice room and classroom throughout the years, and today glitters as the Garcia music Studio, the home of Beaumont’s music programs.

across the hall, the former trophy room, now called St. ann hall, was previously a gym, choir room and a space for dances. today it remains open to use as flexible space, such as the meeting with the Veale Foundation (page 12, left). Some things don’t change, however – St. ann hall is still a space for dances. the most recent was the 2012 Christmas Ball.

Dorothy kaZel CommemorationOn December 2, Bishop Roger Gries, OSB celebrated a Liturgy for the four churchwomen killed in El Salvador: Sr. Dorothy Kazel, OSU Maryknoll Sisters Maura Clarke and Ita Ford, and Jean Donovan, a lay missionary. Peer Ministers working with Campus Ministry helped craft the Liturgy, served the Mass and proclaimed the readings. Bishop Gries celebrated the Liturgy with faculty and students, plus guests that included members of Sr. Dorothy’s family. The Liturgy honored the women on the 32nd anniversary of their deaths.

St. urSula liturGy Once a year, staff and students gather for a Liturgy to celebrate our Ursuline heritage. After the Mass, the girls enjoy a presentation that gives a lively, brief personal history for each of the Ursuline sisters who minister at Beaumont. The Sisters receive flowers – and applause – from the girls, as the entire school thanks them for their service and dedication.

1946Sister Doris Mooney called to remind those ladies who were in Room 2 of their sophomore homeroom about a collection for a Madonna for their class. They went to Henningers and bought a beautiful framed Madonna. Sister Doris Mooney has the framed Madonna over her desk with a piece of palm tucked behind it. It is still such a treasured item.

1956We are saddened to report the loss of our dear classmates Carol Flowers McMillam and Barbara Slife Warner. We extend our sincere sympathy to Sheila Dunn Burke on the loss of her sister Kay Dunn ’47 and Janet Neff Newsome on the loss of her sister Barbara Neff-Hutchison ’57. Peggi Conway joined Barbara Slife Warner’s family during her illness.

She delivered the eulogy. May they all rest in peace. We had 10 classmates enjoy a lunch at Blue Point Grille followed by a visit to the Horseshoe Casino. Rosemarie Miceli Surace was the lucky winner! We concluded the evening with a nightcap at Johnnie’s Downtown. Suzie Baird Fitzgerald, Dolores McDonnell Ritt and I attended the golf outing at the Acacia Country Club for cocktails and appetizers, but we skipped the golf. Dolores McDonnell Ritt, Diane Junglas Richardson, Janet Neff Newsome and I attended the beautiful memorial mass at Beaumont in November. Our class pavers have been placed in the newly renovated courtyard. Nancy Gould Mulcahy spent the summer working in Denali National Park in Alaska. This was her 4th season and it sure beat the South Carolina heat! She returned to Aiken in mid-September and left in early October for a 28 day Mediterranean cruise, departing from Barcelona and making numerous ports of call before arriving in Ft. Lauderdale. She never did a Transatlantic crossing before and thoroughly enjoyed it! For three weeks during the summer of 2011 Peggy Conway cycled 300 miles in The Czech Republic from Prague to Vienna, Austria to Paris, France. Suzie Baird Fitzgerald is enjoying her new grandson Mason Daniel. 1957A Happy 2013 toast dear classmates: Here’s to the bright New Year and a fond farewell to the old. Here’s to the things that are yet to come and the memories that we hold. BreakFaSt with Santa Nearly 200 alumnae, family and friends gathered for our annual Breakfast with Santa. Volunteers rustle up breakfast in the kitchen, and help with crafts in the foyer. Kids of all ages get to meet with Santa and have mom or dad take their picture together. Breakfast with Santa is sponsored by the Alumnae Association – it’s a great way to catch up and have a family friendly morning during the holiday season.

ChriStmaS at Beaumont After our annual Christmas prayer service, the students enjoy a mini-concert from their peers, and then from the faculty. Our version of “The Twelve Days of Christmas” includes… “…Five snow-oh days!...” which makes the girls jump for joy. We hope everyone had a great holiday season and that you have a wonderful new year in 2013!
