Church Garden
I am happy to share the progress with our church garden. This is our second summer growing season. Armenian
Cucumbers have done well, along with two varieties of squashes, zucchini and yellow crooked neck. I have
recently planted pumpkin that have taken off well. The garden has been a blessing to me, I enjoy working with
the soil and find it a peaceful time to connect with the wonders of nature. If anyone cares to take part in the
cultivation process I would be happy to facilitate with anything. A special thanks to Don Schinke for installing
the irrigation system, he put in an automatic drip system for the watering.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE JULY 2017 VOTERS MEETING The quarterly Voters meeting was held on Sunday, July 23rd following the worship service with 20 voters in attendance. Here are some highlights of that meeting:
Printed reports from Boards and Committees were distributed
Pastor reported how busy this quarter has been including a successful food pantry drive in May and how nice his trip to Paris was
Pastor Fairow will not be returning to his position with Lutheran Ministry at ASU due to health issues
Treasurer reports a positive balance of $3000 during the last quarter, $10,000 year to date
Remaining loan balance is $2260 for light pole project
Extra missions contributions were sent to budgeted missions
Christian Education held Family VBS July 11-13 with 22 in attendance each evening
PTC, LWML, and Christian Ed provided dinners during the VBS
Elders reported Oct. 21 is tentative date for fish fry fundraiser
Board of Finance will review Personnel Manual rules on sick leave to comply with new state law
Two kitchen refrigerators replaced; gift from Gethsemane of $725 will be used toward cost; congregation asked to donate toward remainder of balance
Stewardship Committee was authorized to spend $700 on school supplies for Gililland and Holdeman
Stewardship Committee donated a batch of caps to Maricopa County Hospital
Stewardship and LWML are collecting water for Holy Cross for Phoenix Rescue Mission; bring water to narthex or give cash donations to Sandra Wardwell or Grace Timm
Trustees reported new kitchen refrigerators purchased and installed
Trustees will have carpet in chancel stretched and will follow up on installing tarps over garden

LWML held a successful meeting in May with speaker Jana Shields marking the 20th anniversary of Friends’ House at Drake Park
Gethsemane SAM and Time Out Ladies will resume meeting at BSLC in September
Positive Thinking Committee (PTC) will contact Tempe High about football dinners and will help Stewardship by preparing hygiene kits

Definition of Stewardship: Doing the good works which God has prepared for us to do.
Definition of Faith: “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see” (Hebrews
11:1). The eleventh chapter of Hebrews is known as the “Faith Chapter.“
Through faith, we understand that our stewardship is God working in and through us. “And without faith it is
impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He
rewards those who earnestly seek Him” (Hebrews 11:6). It is not what we do, give, or serve—but what God
does, what God gives, how God serves, and our response to His love and gifts to us. “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do”
(Ephesians 2:10).
God empowers and equips us to be faithful stewards. God has chosen us to carry out His works on earth.
“You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit—fruit that will last” (John
15:16). Stewards’ motives are that God receives the glory that is offered through our hands, feet, lips and
whole body, soul and mind in service.
As stewards, we are the faithful vessels that God uses. Through faith, God can make us into His faithful
stewards.
Stewardship Committee has been taking advantage of the sales on school supplies, back packs and hygiene
products to donate to Gililland Middle School and Holdeman Elementary School through our church’s
“Outreach in the Community” project. Containers are placed in Fuerbringer Hall for items if anyone would like
to help with the project. Our church is assisting Holy Cross Church in collecting water for Phoenix Rescue Mission until August 28. Cap Makers are continuing to meet through the summer. Three knitters from
International Friendship House at ASU and two from Christ Church Lutheran have joined our group. Twenty
two caps have been donated to the burn unit at Maricopa County Hospital and delivered by Dorothy McShee.

Food items are always needed and accepted any time for the Food Pantry and as long as there is food in the
pantry we will continue this outreach program. Thank you.
BSLC’S WOMEN IN MISSION (also known as the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League):
BEAUTIFUL SAVIOR LUTHERAN WOMEN IN MISSION
The LWML and Stewardship Committee kicked off the water drive with Holy Cross in June. Cases of bottled water are being collected in the narthex. Cash donations to purchase water will be accepted by Sandra Wardwell. LWML supported the Family Vacation Bible School in July by providing sandwiches, chips, veggies, and cookies for the Wednesday dinner. Sandra Wardwell and Jan Witte (Christ Greenfield) will be working with Sharon Owens on submitting a grant application to the LWML District for Lutheran Ministry at ASU. We will have a planning meeting in August to tentatively schedule our activities during the 2017-2018 year. All BSLC women and friends are invited to join us! Thank you for your support.
NATIONAL LWML CONVENTION NEWS If you are interested in numbers, enjoy these from the Albuquerque convention, June 22-25:
Total number of convention attendees was 3,471 of which 850 were first time attendees.
Total Young Woman Representatives attending was 81.
Tee Up 4 Mites raised $15,255.78 with approximately 48 people participating.
The Mission in Motion/Mission Pledge Walk raised $72,683.06 with 1,132 participating.
The blood donation drive had 106 participants.
Gifts from the Heart donations provided: 340 Sheet Sets, 161 Baby Kits, 229 School Kits, 4,607 Items of Underwear, 22 Boxes of Towels and Linens, and $31,256 in Gift Cards, Cash, and Checks.
Servant Events participants provided the following items to non-profits agencies in the region: 432 Marked Bibles, 100 Hygiene Bags, 3,000 Personal Care Kits, 354 Fleece Blankets, 1,147 Cards for Phil's Friends, 99 Quilts, and 639 School Kits.
Convention Offering #1, for the Mission Goal, received $48,818.52.Offering #2, a 75th Anniversary Thank Offering for the LWML Endowment received $51,884.84. Offering #3, for a bilingual worker priest on the US/Mexico border through Concordia Lutheran Church, Chula Vista, California received $31,964.81. Offering #4, for the "God Cares About You" mission in Albuquerque received $33,710.56.
There were 71 Mission Flags representing the countries where LWML has provided mission grants.
For the 2017-2019 Mission Goal, 22 mission grants were selected for funding
SENIOR ADULT MINISTRY ( SAM ) AND TIME OUT LADIES OF GETHSEMANE LUTHERAN CHURCH
Both groups plan on meeting at Beautiful Savior starting in September. The Time Out Ladies are not meeting during June, July, or August. The SAM members are meeting the first Thursday of June, July, and August for breakfast.
BSLC LWML WATER DRIVE WITH HOLY CROSS LWML
This year BSLC LWML will join Holy Cross LWML to collect bottled water for the Phoenix Rescue
Mission. Last year Phoenix Rescue distributed 1,116,749 bottles of water. Beautiful Savior collected 38 cases
of water last year. The Water Drive begins May 28th and ends Aug.27th on Living Water Weekend. Water will
be collected until the last day. Please bring your donations to Beautiful Savior any time and place in the
narthex. Pastor Murphy of Holy Cross is shown at last year’s blessing of the water. Thank you!!

Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church has a Prayer Chain sponsored by LWML, also called Women In Mission, who are ready and willing to pray with or for you.
Anyone who would like to join the Prayer Chain can be added to the list just by notifying Gladys Meyer at
480 897-2236 or 480 258-0889 or by email [email protected]. Please give your choice of receiving prayer
requests by telephone or email. We presently have 16 members. All prayer requests are accepted and
forwarded to the prayer chain members as soon as possible. Call your prayer requests to Gladys Meyer
(same contacts as above) or Pastor Misch, 602 582-7473 or 480 967-2660.
A Monday Prayer is sent out to the Prayer Chain Members. This includes a mini devotion, a related prayer
and prayer requests.
God welcomes your prayers. Psalm 55:22: “Cast your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you.”
Of Wind and Rain The monsoon season is always an exciting time. There are atmospheric disturbances (Which even sound exciting) that lead to the formation of storms, and every now and then these storms are strong enough to survive the heat of the valley and give us a good show complete with wind, rain, lightening, and a little fear. It seems like every time I drive around after a storm I see a number of downed tree limbs and damage. We know how dangerous these storms can be. We were reminded about how fast floods can form and how powerful water really is when we read about the flash flood that caused the death of a number of people in Payson. It is truly amazing how powerful storms are. And the monsoons remind me of the story Jesus told about the man who built his house upon the rock, and the man who built his house on the sand. It is a familiar story. When the monsoon storms came (I may have added that) the man who built his house on the rock was safe and his house stood. However, the man who built his house on the sand lost his house because the foundation was not stable. We know the illustration that Jesus was getting at. He was urging his listeners to build their lives on the eternal rock that is him. There is safety and security in that no matter what happens. And we know quite well that we could get caught up in a dangerous situation. Maybe a storm destroys our house or maybe we get that news that we have cancer or some other health issue that will lead to our end. The bad things still happen to us but if we build our lives on the rock, that is Jesus, they do not destroy our lives. If our lives are built on the sand any bad thing can threaten to take away all that we have built. But as those who live on the rock, nothing can threaten the eternal life we have in Jesus.
