——Civil——

“I chose to be challenged and stimulated.” Malcolm Hicks, Geotechnical Engineer

“ Beca was the only company I applied to. It felt like there really was no other choice, as so many people across lots of disciplines said it’s a great place for grads. Beca has the resources to teach you properly – and at the same time you still get challenged to stretch yourself. With such a wide variety of projects to work on, no two days are alike.”

“I chose a great vibe and hands-on experience.” Richard Parnell, Civil Engineer

“ At Beca you get a really good culture and a great social life. Everyone is really helpful, and you get rewarded for working hard. With half my time spent on design work and the other half on sites, I get to see my projects develop. I’ve also had the opportunity to get stuck into projects I could take responsibility for early on – Beca gives you the chance to show what you can do.”

With a civil engineering or related degree, you can explore opportunities in our General Civil, Structural, Transportation, Geotechnical or Water and Wastes team.

You can choose to specialise in one of these areas or if you are keen to gain a broad range of civil experience you may be able to move between them.

General Civil Design If you’re not too sure about what area of civil engineering you want to experience first, then joining one of Beca’s general civil teams in Auckland, Tauranga, Hamilton, New Plymouth, Wellington or Christchurch will give you the opportunity to be involved in a broad range of civil design projects. These could include roads, ports and coastal projects, land developments and airports. There will be opportunities to start at the concept and preliminary design stage of a project, move onto the detailed design phase and finally, work closely with contractors on the construction of the project.

Structural Beca’s structural engineers work in three main sectors: commercial buildings, civil structures (structures supporting infrastructure, including bridges, marine structures and retaining walls) and structural design for large industrial plants. From the beginning you’ll be part of a project team typically made up of a design leader, other graduate engineers, CAD designers and drafters. You’ll work on structural design and calculations and will get the opportunity to spend time on site to supervise the construction of your design and ensure it meets the appropriate quality standard.

Traffic and Transportation If you join our Transportation team as a graduate engineer, you could find yourself involved in traffic engineering, road safety, congestion monitoring, planning new roads, motorways and signalised intersections, planning future public transport networks, addressing transport issues for new commercial developments, planning construction traffic management, and generating solutions to strategic transport problems.

Geotechnical Working for Beca’s Geotechnical team will see you involved in a combination of office and site work. Our geotechnical engineers, engineering geologists and hydrogeologists provide essential site investigation, design and construction monitoring services for many different kinds of projects from commercial buildings, industrial plants and mines to infrastructure developments such as roads, airports, bridges and ports.

Water and Wastes Our Water and Wastes group provides a wide range of services in the wastewater, water, water resources, stormwater and network systems sectors. Beca is privileged to be trusted by our clients with many of the larger water and wastewater projects in New Zealand, and this will provide an excellent foundation for your career.

——Electrical

——

If you’re graduating with a degree in electrical engineering, Beca has opportunities in our Building Services, Power Systems, Industrial or Industrial Electrical, Instrumentation and Control Systems teams.

Building Services Working in Building Services at Beca will expose you to a broad range of projects such as hospitals, sports stadiums, hotels, apartment and condominiums, correctional facilities, airports, office blocks, shopping malls, and specialised structures. If you are interested in having opportunities to travel then a career in Building Services is arguably the most transportable of engineering disciplines, with most Beca offices represented by the Building Services discipline. As an electrical engineer, your range of work could include electrical distribution, lighting, standby power generation, security systems, renewable energy sources, voice and data networks and Audio Visual systems.

Power Systems The Beca Power team operates at the forefront of Generation and Transmission within Australasia, providing consultancy services throughout the industry and on many of today’s high profile projects. As a Beca engineer you may find yourself providing upfront concept engineering, detailed design, or commissioning support on-site. We pride ourselves on providing a total solution package, and work alongside our clients from the initial concept stages through to final testing on-site.

Industrial Electrical, Instrumentation and Control Systems Beca’s Electrical, Instrumentation and Control Systems (E, I & C) team is responsible for providing electrical, instrumentation, and control systems engineering for industrial clients. As a graduate, you will have the opportunity to experience all three discipline areas, and if you develop a particular interest in any of them, we’ll help you to pursue that. Guided by senior engineers, graduates typically work on a range of industrial projects, from project conception through to commissioning.

Industrial If you join one of Beca’s industrial teams, you could be working for the iron and steel works, oil & gas, chemicals, general manufacturing, food & beverage, mining & metals processing or pulp & paper industries around New Zealand, Australia, Asia and the Pacific. No matter which area you specialise in, you’ll generally work as part of a project team on a large job, building experience in systems and procedures before being given smaller projects to manage.“I chose people I can look up to.”

Alan Wightman, Power Systems Engineer

“ Since my days as a summer student at Beca I knew this was where I wanted to be. There is such incredible expertise and knowledge here, and I have all the support I need. Being part of an experienced Power team provides many opportunities to learn new technical skills. At the same time, they don’t hold your hand – you’re trusted to work to your capability.”

You would typically have the opportunity to work on projects that range in size from small commercial fitouts of around 1,000m², to international complexes that combine offices, hotels, retail and condominium facilities.

FireBoredom won’t be a factor in Beca Fire, where our range of fire safety and fire protection engineering skills extend from the use of sophisticated computer modelling software to evaluate fire growth and smoke movement, to the design of complex special hazard systems for high risk applications.

Industrial If you join one of Beca’s industrial teams, you could be working for the iron and steel works, oil & gas, chemicals, general manufacturing, food & beverage, mining & metals processing or pulp & paper industries around New Zealand, Australia, Asia and the Pacific. Our wide range of clients means you may find yourself working on heavy industry projects, chemical or mechanical process work, or even in project management.

Project ManagementWith a bit of experience under your belt, you may develop an interest in the role project managers play in the success of a project. Beca project managers oversee the entire lifecycle of a project from the design phase to the construction phase providing contract methodology advice, feasibility studies, design management and construction management and leveraging off the vast technical experience available within Beca’s multidisciplinary consultancy structure.

Water and WastesIf you want to see projects through from start to finish becoming a graduate mechanical engineer in our Water and Wastes team could get you off to a great start. Typically, graduates in this team not only assist in the design of water and wastewater treatment plants and pump stations, but also get involved in the preparation of tenders, project commissioning and project management.

“I chose flexibility and support.” Jessica Brown, Planner

“ I joined Beca from a legal background, and straight away I felt my different perspective was valued by the Planning team. Not only have I had the opportunity to work on some of the most exciting infrastructure projects in New Zealand, Beca was also incredibly supportive when I took a sabbatical for six months to finish studying in Sweden. I feel really lucky to be here.”
