With a civil engineering or related degree, you can explore opportunities in our General Civil, Structural, Transportation, Geotechnical or Water and Wastes team.

You can choose to specialise in one of these areas or if you are keen to gain a broad range of civil experience you may be able to move between them.

General Civil Design If you’re not too sure about what area of civil engineering you want to experience first, then joining one of Beca’s general civil teams in Auckland, Tauranga, Hamilton, New Plymouth, Wellington or Christchurch will give you the opportunity to be involved in a broad range of civil design projects. These could include roads, ports and coastal projects, land developments and airports. There will be opportunities to start at the concept and preliminary design stage of a project, move onto the detailed design phase and finally, work closely with contractors on the construction of the project.

Structural Beca’s structural engineers work in three main sectors: commercial buildings, civil structures (structures supporting infrastructure, including bridges, marine structures and retaining walls) and structural design for large industrial plants. From the beginning you’ll be part of a project team typically made up of a design leader, other graduate engineers, CAD designers and drafters. You’ll work on structural design and calculations and will get the opportunity to spend time on site to supervise the construction of your design and ensure it meets the appropriate quality standard.

Traffic and Transportation If you join our Transportation team as a graduate engineer, you could find yourself involved in traffic engineering, road safety, congestion monitoring, planning new roads, motorways and signalised intersections, planning future public transport networks, addressing transport issues for new commercial developments, planning construction traffic management, and generating solutions to strategic transport problems.

Geotechnical Working for Beca’s Geotechnical team will see you involved in a combination of office and site work. Our geotechnical engineers, engineering geologists and hydrogeologists provide essential site investigation, design and construction monitoring services for many different kinds of projects from commercial buildings, industrial plants and mines to infrastructure developments such as roads, airports, bridges and ports.

Water and Wastes Our Water and Wastes group provides a wide range of services in the wastewater, water, water resources, stormwater and network systems sectors. Environmental Management Beca’s Environmental team has people located in Auckland, Tauranga, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. We have key skills in sustainable environmental management, climate change and carbon management, air quality and odour management, water resources management, stormwater quality and soil contamination.

As a graduate, you will gain exposure to a diverse range of environmental commissions and are likely to work on a range of projects of varying sizes, from big infrastructure works, such as motorway upgrades, to land development and industrial manufacturing plants. Initially you will be supporting assessments undertaken by our senior scientists and engineers, assisting with field work, writing reports and liaising with stakeholders and statutory agencies. As your technical knowledge increases you will progress to handling project management and client management tasks.

Water and Wastes In joining our Water and Wastes team as a graduate environmental engineer, you will not only be assisting in the process design of water and wastewater treatment plants, but you’ll also get involved in the preparation of tenders, project commissioning and project management.

Traffic and Transportation When you join our Transportation team as a graduate engineer you’ll find yourself doing all sorts of things, from building and running computer models that forecast the transportation needs of major cities and emerging urban centres through to micro-simulating the behaviour of spectators at major international sporting events. There’s also work to be done in analysing current congestion information and modelled projections to assist in solving problems dear to the hearts of many commuters and commercial businesses.

To be a successful transportation modeller you’ll need an advanced understanding of mathematical modelling and an interest in solving real-life infrastructure problems combined with a genuine interest in transportation. Beca is a leader in transportation modelling in New Zealand, so you’ll get good exposure and learn from one of the best in the business.

Applied Technologies Beca’s Applied Technologies team applies innovative technologies and approaches to provide problem-solving services based on its multi-discipline analytical skills. You could be involved in developing, specifying, testing and implementing software solutions for corporate and commercial use; using in-house simulation tools to advise on complex problems or optimisations for some of the world’s leading breweries, port companies and sporting arenas; problem definition; data gathering; and identification of real world solutions and presentation of findings to clients.

Beca Planning is looking for people from a diverse range of educational backgrounds (a planning degree is not compulsory!)

We manage our workload across the globe, so there are often opportunities to work in various locations. As a graduate planner you will get involved in a wide range of work, so superior communication skills, analytical thinking and the ability to ‘think outside the box’ are absolute musts.

Development and Statutory Planning As a graduate planner you’ll work with both public and private sector clients across a range of projects and markets. Your day- to-day work will be guided by experienced professionals and may include:

Preparing plan changes to facilitate major development proposals

Preparing assessments of effects on the environment and resource consent applications for developments

Consulting broadly, including local communities, stakeholders or interested groups

Strategic and Policy Planning Strategic Planning is about helping clients set goals for the future and develop plans for achieving these through practical action. Beca Planning has extensive experience in preparing high level

plans and strategies for local and central government agencies through to detailed Structure Plans. As a graduate planner you could be assisting on strategic studies for central, regional and local government both in New Zealand and offshore, policy development for RMA documents and master planning, structure planning and coastal management planning both in New Zealand and overseas.

Consultation Well-managed consultation forms an essential part of options evaluation processes for development and strategic planning projects. As a graduate planner at Beca you will be involved in the design of consultation and communication strategies and then play a hands-on role in the consultation process, utilising community newsletters, public open days, focus groups and individual meetings to inform and influence professional advice and development of project deliverables and outcomes.

Environmental Planning As a graduate planner, you are likely to be involved in assessing the significance of environmental effects arising from developments - a key aspect of our planning services. You might help senior planners to prepare Assessments of Environmental Effects (AEE) for infrastructure, land development and industrial projects, or for projects located overseas you might work on Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) for mining, ports or energy projects.

If you’re graduating with a survey degree, a graduate position with Beca will allow you to gain experience in all aspects of surveying.

A graduate position with Beca will allow you to gain experience in all aspects of surveying, including cadastral surveys, geodetic and GPS specialist surveys, infrastructure and engineering surveys and land development surveys.

Our surveyors are based in Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch, and work alongside other survey professionals as well as with planning, GIS, digital mapping and engineering professionals. To support overseas engineering design projects, our survey teams are often also required to travel overseas.

You’ll be involved in fieldwork, data collection, data processing and design, organising survey projects, collecting and processing field data, producing reports and assisting with job management. You’ll be expected to lead a survey project and a survey party. As well as using conventional survey techniques, you will be trained in using a variety of advanced GPS and conventional survey technologies.

Whether your degree is in geography, geology, science or computer science, as part of Beca’s GIS team, you could be making a valuable contribution to the development of the world around you.

As a graduate in the GIS team, you’ll immediately start to apply your theoretical knowledge to real-life situations. Starting with the collection and collation of data, you’ll be using software such as Esri ArcGIS to create maps and other outputs, analyse data and model scenarios. As you gain experience, you’ll start applying more advanced techniques to your modelling and analysis, and will begin to run your own work packages, supported by more experienced colleagues, who are always happy to answer questions and offer advice.

Beca’s project management teams provide professional project management services to a wide variety of commercial, industrial and infrastructure clients.

We have over 120 project managers located in our Auckland, Tauranga, Wellington and Christchurch offices, which complement our international project management teams located in Australia, Singapore and China.

We provide specialist project management, development management, programme management and client representative services to projects including airport upgrades, ports, roading projects, the building of new schools and universities, apartment buildings, commercial offices and police stations, food and beverage processing plants, dairy processing and distribution installations, ore processing plants, and infrastructure projects such as water treatment plants.

Our project managers oversee the entire lifecycle of a project from the concept design phase to the construction phase providing contract methodology advice, feasibility studies, design management and construction management and leveraging off the vast technical experience available within Beca’s multidisciplinary consultancy structure.

As a graduate in our project management section you will typically start by supporting an experienced project manager with the administration of a project and the monitoring of smaller packages of work. You might work on-site supervising the construction phase of a project and assist on contract administration on major projects. If you are keen to work towards chartered engineer status and/or PMI membership we can support you in getting some design experience by taking advantage of Beca’s multidisciplinary structure. This experience will also help you become a better project manager and is a key differentiator of our project management service to clients.

If you’re graduating with a quantity surveying, or related diploma or degree, a graduate position with Beca will give you experience in all aspects of quantity surveying, estimating, scheduling cost management, risk analysis, contract administration and procurement.

One of the great things about working as a quantity surveyor at Beca is the diverse range of projects you’ll have the opportunity to work on. These can range from airports, roads and water treatment facilities, to schools, sports facilities, police stations, food and beverage plants and large rebuild projects.
