“May the Lord show mercy to the household of Onesiphorus,
because he often refreshed me and was not as ashamed of my
chains”
2 Tim 1:16
To paraphrase the late President Harry Truman, “If you can’t stand the
heat, get out of Arizona in the summer”.
Paul is grateful for the kindness of a friend and how he often refreshed
him, and right now in record heat here in the valley, we are all grateful
for some refreshment, but that is not the kind of refreshment that Paul
is referring to.
Jesus taught a very simple, but very profound principal; “So in everything, do to others what you would
have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets”. (Matthew 7:12)
This has been called the Golden Rule, as it offers a guiding light about the decisions and choices we face
daily.
Only the Lord Jesus could take hundreds of pages from the Old Testament and distil them down into one
single, memorable phrase, treat others how you would like them to treat you.
Paul writes the words which we began with because Paul had often been hurt by how fellow Christians
treated him when he found himself imprisoned for his faith.
He had been rejected, abandoned and forgotten by people who felt ashamed that their former pastor,
travelling evangelist was now in a Roman prison cell. They were ashamed, and wanted to pretend that
they never knew him, and that he was no friend of theirs.
However, the kindness of Onesiphorus shines through the darkness of rejection and brightens Paul’s spirit
and cheers his heart.
Haven’t you found as I have that small kindnesses can really make a difference to people? That little note,
that phone call, the small gift that shows you remembered, something which costs so little but is very
much appreciated.
Your pastor and friend,
Brian Anderson

MY MOTHER SAID, “MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHT WORK.”
Our volunteers take time to plan special events that include food. They are all smiles when our church family pitches in to clear the tables. After a breakfast, lunch or dinner, let’s help by busing our dishes, taking out our trash, and placing salt, pepper, sugar, etc. on the cart provided. We’ll find that the job will soon be done and a grateful committee will finish up in record time. Let’s remember a little bit of help goes a long way.
In Christian Love, Norma Sandvig Moderator
P.S. A Great Big THANK YOU to Pepper and Gary Roady for the hours spent to set up our new projector system. It is another positive addition to our Sunday Service.
HOW GREAT IT IS!!!
COME ONE, COME ALL SINGERS!
Choir rehearsals will begin September 7 at 2:30 PM in the choir room. We’ll sing at the September 10th Sunday service. All voices are welcome. If you have any questions, please call Jane Higgs at 623-910-6355 or email me at [email protected]. Let’s have another great year of sharing our voices with the CCSC congregation.
Thanks so much! Jane
DEACON'S
CORNER
Hi to everyone! Thank you to all who have volunteered to greet, usher, or serve fellowship over the summer months!!! Hope everyone is staying safe and cool - keep the A/C going! Stay hydrated also! See you at church.

PROJECTOR HELP!
Plans to fire up the projector system are under way. I know it’s been missed over the summer months by those of you who have stayed and braved the triple digits. The choir returns September 10th and so will the projector system. We are still looking for additional volunteers to be trained. The first training session will be September 5th at 9 a.m. in the church sanctuary. This will be a group session just
to become familiar with the operating system. Additional training will be scheduled throughout September on a one on one basis. We hope to have enough trained volunteers by next summer to keep the system running year round. If you are interested, please contact Pepper at 623-210-3355.

Congregational Church of Sun City is pleased to announce the introduction of an electronic option for making regular offerings. Contributions can now be debited automatically from your checking or savings account. Our new electronic giving program offers convenience for you and much-needed donation consistency for our congregation. If you are currently giving on a weekly or monthly basis, you will no longer need to write out 52 or 12 checks a year or prepare giving envelopes. And, when travel, illness or other circumstances prevent you from attending services, this program will allow your scheduled offerings to continue on an uninterrupted basis. This service is provided by Vanco Payment Solutions, a very reputable company that I have personally worked with at two churches over the past 10 years.
If you are interested in this service, an authorization form and a “Frequently Asked Questions” flyer are available from the church office. Sara Givens, Congregational Church of Sun City Treasurer
2017 Annual Meeting - Part One
The theme of the 63rd Annual Meeting and Conference of the National Association of Congregational
Churches was “Dreaming, Talking, Acting”. Our Bible lecturer, the Rev. Dr. Barbara Brown Taylor, dealt with
these and more in her three lectures. You may know that we met at Piedmont College in Demorest, Georgia.
You may not know however, that Piedmont (along with Olivet, Michigan) is one of two Congregational
colleges that has direct ties with the NA. Olivet houses the Center for Congregational Leadership, and
Piedmont has the Harry Butman Chair of Religion. The aforementioned Barbara Brown Taylor had held the
Butman Chair since 1997. Twenty years on, she has announced her retirement from that position. The new
possessor of that chair is Dr. Carson Webb, formerly of Eureka College in Illinois. Who was Harry Butman you
ask? Maybe I’ll write an article about him sometime. He deserves an article about him sometime. He
deserves more than I can cover here.
Annual Meetings of the NA feature worship, lectures, workshops, meals, mission projects, fun get-togethers,
and much more. I’ll report about all of these over the next several months in subsequent editions of the
Roadrunner.

Sunshine Committee
Women’s Fellowship Sunshine committee would appreciate any “Get Well” and “Thinking of You” greeting cards you have and will not be using. Sunshine tries to keep in touch with those convalescing at home or in hospital or long term care. There is a Women’s Fellowship Sunshine basket on the counter in the Narthex. Please donate cards you may not use and place them in the basket. Thank you and God Bless.

SWEAT SHOP SORORITY
Now it’s summer, but the heat doesn’t bother us because we have air conditioning!
We have a new plan for next year’s rummage sale. Boy, do we think ahead. As we have heavy fabrics on hand, the project is large cloth bags that will hold a lot of goodies for prospective buyers. They receive one cloth bag on entrance and upon check out, the cashier will transfer the goodies into plastic bags. Then, the cloth bags are ready for use again by another customer. Vi is working on these and also continuing to make bibs for Anita’s handicapped children.
We have lots of unwrapped boxes ready for wrapping (and I don’t mean music) for our popular Christmas trees. We have an abundance of bright pretty papers and glue. These are take home items if you wish to do this at home or here in the Choir Room on Mondays from 8:30 AM—Noon or when you wake up!
New folks are always welcome at our expandable tables for coffee, tea and snacks. Come visit!

CARE Ministries John Lozano recently volunteered
to be our new CARE Ministries
Coordinator. The mission of the
Congregational Church of Sun
City’s CARE Ministries is to extend our Christian
concern for one another by providing all members
opportunities to “give a hand” and to “get a hand”
through a network of CARE volunteers. Providing
assistance to one another in our church family
enriches and strengthens basic quality of life.
Please consider registering with our program either
as a volunteer or as a church family member in
need of services. The CARE Ministries yellow
registration cards can be dropped in the box
located in the church Narthex. Thank you to John

OPENINGS FOR FLOWER SIGN UPS IN SEPTEMBER There are still several openings remaining in September of this year to sign up for flower dedications. Please consider signing up! The 2017 chart is posted on the right side of the large bulletin board just outside Alexander Hall. If you wish to donate flowers, sign the chart for the appropriate Sunday.
You will be contacted by a “flower lady” prior to your selected Sunday. At that time, you will have the opportunity to state your preferences regarding flower type and color as well as providing your specific information regarding your commemoration to be listed in the Sunday bulletin
Every Tuesday morning the committee members can be found working on new floral arrangements. During that time they are available to answer questions you may have about this service to our church family. They welcome you to visit the flower room or you may call the church office.
VOLUNTEERS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME!
Thank you for your financial support. We depend on your contributions to the flower fund to be able to provide the flower commemoration program.

“In the Beginning” An Organ and Voice Concert
Sunday, September 24 at 4:00 p.m. Sanctuary, CCSC
Free, everyone invited, bring a friend
Our organist, Christine Kyhn, will be giving an organ concert on Sunday, September 24 at 4:00 p.m. She will be joined by her daughter, Emily Sternfeld-Dunn, who is a professional singer based in Wichita, Kansas, where she lives with her husband and daughters. Christine is an active musician, performing in venues throughout the Phoenix area. In addition to her work here at the Congregational Church of Sun City, she is the Principal Accompanist for the West Valley Chorale and also for the choral program at Scottsdale Christian Academy. She also heads the vocal department at Rosie’s House Music Academy, an after-school music education program for children of low income families where she directs five choirs, Kindergarten through twelfth grade. Emily Sternfeld-Dunn, soprano, is a strong advocate for new music and unconventional performances of art song and opera. Emily cofounded and performed with the Hartford Opera Theater in Hartford, Connecticut. She currently performs as a soloist with opera companies, symphonies, and choral societies across the US. Emily teaches voice at the university level while maintaining a private studio. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in music from California State University, East Bay (Hayward), a Master of Arts degree in music from Washington State University, Pullman, and a Graduate Professional Diploma in vocal performance from the Hartt School in Connecticut.
The September 24th program theme is inspired by the six days of Creation: each day represented by a piece reflecting the images that day brings. This concert will include some favorite classical works as well as pieces that may be new to you. Composers include Jean Langlais, Ralph Vaughn Williams, Heitor Villa Lobos, Gustav Holst, J.S. Bach, and Charles-Marie Widor. The program’s second half will include a powerful contemporary song cycle called “Eve-Song” by Jake Heggie, which presents the events in the garden from Eve’s point of view.
This free concert in the sanctuary of CCSC promises to be a delightful afternoon of exciting and beautiful music. You won’t want to miss it.

CCSC School Supply Drive: July 23—August 13 As hard as it is to believe, school is right around the corner and once again, we have the privilege of helping some schools in the districts for Anita Kratzer, Heather Anderson and Orangewood Elementary School. The supplies can be dropped off at the church July 23—August 13 on the table set up in the hall. Teachers will be picking up supplies on August 13th. School begins August 7th. The teachers appreciate getting the supplies early so they do not have to buy items that might be coming from our church later.

The Power of Weakness
In Tramp for the Lord, Corrie ten Boom describes traveling to Russia
during the Cold War—when Christians were being persecuted—to
thank an old woman who’d been secretly translating Christian books
(including ten Boom’s). Ravaged by multiple sclerosis, the woman could
move only an index finger. Yet with it, she typed constantly, translating
words while praying for people who’d eventually read them.
Ten Boom’s reaction was, “Oh Lord, why don’t you heal her?” But the
woman’s husband said God had purpose in his wife’s suffering.
Although the secret police closely watched other Christians, they left
this woman alone, assuming she couldn’t accomplish anything.
Jesus works through our weaknesses, making his power perfect in
them (see 2 Corinthians 12:9). He doesn’t ask if we’re capable—only if
we’re willing.

How much praying are you doing? How often do
you talk to God?
At least be honest with yourself, and with God on that question. If your prayer life is typical, then your prayer life may be haphazard, infrequent, with long periods of silence punctuated with times of panic, or desperation when a
crisis hits your doorstep, when a major problem lands in your lap. Jesus indicated that there were two ways to pray. We either pray like a hypocrite or a pagan or we can pray like a child of God. In other words, we can pray like an orphan who has no spiritual Father, or we can pray like a child who knows and trusts our heavenly Father. During the five Wednesday mornings in August, Pastor Brian will guide us to a richer, fuller, more vibrant prayer life, using what we call The Lord’s Pray as our guide. Let’s all of us admit that we are not praying nearly as much, or as frequently as we know we should be.
Let this summer Bible study start you praying regularly, or restart your
prayer life or revitalize your prayer to what it should be.
We are going to look at subjects such as:
• How to pray like a pagan • The pattern prayer • The paternity of prayer • The priority of prayer • The provision of prayer
Let us all draw comfort from these wise words, “our prayers must be fervent, of course, and they ought to be frequent, but they do not need to be fancy”.
Let us learn to pray properly, using the pattern prayer which Jesus taught His disciples.
