Sangoma has been part of the Asterisk community since Mark Spencer started the project. The founder of Sangoma was one of the people that Mark called on when he was first figuring out how to connect an Asterisk system to the PSTN. It actually started out as Voice Over Frame relay using a Sangoma board and an ADTRAN router. And while I applaud and congratulate Mark on his success, it is no secret that when it comes to boards required to connect Asterisk to the PSTN, Digium and Sangoma are competitors, and I have said for years that Sangoma makes better and more technically advanced boards for Asterisk than Digium does. Open Source Answers the Call for Tier 1 Carrier
GTS is one of the largest alternative communications carriers in Cen-tral Europe, providing up-to-date, integrated services to corporate customers. More than 7,000 business customers of GTS – including large Polish and international corporations, government agencies, and SMEs from almost every industry – run their daily activity and achieve business goals in a safe and effective manner.
UKE (Polish Telecom Regulator) requires that all Polish Carriers are required to pre-announce call tariffs for premium-rate traffic before charging the customer for the call. With only three weeks to comply with the regulation, or face a heavy fine, GTS could not meeting re-quirement with their existing infrastructure and need to implement a completely new solution.
GTS Energis contacted VoiceWorks, an open source telephony integrator spe-cializing in Asterisk®. The VoiceWorks
64 E1 solution, running on two Sangoma A104DE boards with Asterisk, in conjunction with a Sangoma SS7 Media Gateway solution, provided the required solution within the three-week deadline. While this was originally intended only as a stop-gap measure, the system performed beyond expectation and was adopted as the final solution for this im-plementation. The system was eventually upgraded to use the higher density A108DE boards; lowering the cost of future expansion.
