Revd Alexandra Terrett

This past weekend has been a sad one for football, with the helicopter crash

at Leicester City Football Club, the death of a football fan at Brighton and

Glen Hoddle taken seriously ill whilst commentating on television. We re-

member all those affected by the events over the weekend, those who lost

their lives and their families and friends.

Many people if asked will profess to be a supporter of one football club or

another, and I have to admit that I watch with some disdain and horror at the

money spent on various players. My sons are all Arsenal supporters; the

screaming when they score is unbelievable. (They don’t scream very often!)

To be a supporter you need to show your support in action. Unless we’re

there on the terraces, cheering on the players, or contributing to the club’s

finances through paying at the turnstiles, our so-called support means very

little.

The parallel between this and our place as Disciples of Christ isn’t hard to

spot. Many of us claim to be Christians, but I wonder how long it is since

you last came to church, opened the pages of your Bible, prayed to God or

expressed your faith in some form of active service? You may very well

watch ‘Songs of Praise’ on a Sunday or listen to ‘Thought for the Day’ on

Radio 4, but if that’s as far as your Christian faith goes, there’s something

not quite right.

I don’t think it’s a realistic expectation for everyone to be in church on a Sunday morning, or that we should stick rigidly to a certain life style, but what I am saying to myself as much as to everyone else is that being a Christian involves us belonging to Christ rather than us just being interest-ed in him, and that should make a difference in the way we live and how others see us.

We are experiencing some challenging times - the refurbishment of the church, discovering what it means to be a truly healthy church in Becken-ham today. If we are to get through this next phase of our journey it is es-sential that we are real supporters of Christ, a shining light in our commu-nity and, above all, real supporters of each other.

‘Lord Jesus Christ, I talk about belonging to you and offering you my ser-vice, but so often it falls short of the ideal. Instead of making you a part of my life I treat you as an optional extra, there to turn to as and when it suits me. Instead of working for your Kingdom, I strive to serve my own inter-ests. Instead of involving myself in the life of your people, I stay on the fringes reluctant to commit myself wholly to your cause. Forgive me and save me from confusing what I regard as Christianity with a living disciple-ship. Teach me what it means to belong to you and be part of your church and may I serve you as you deserve. Amen’

Christmas and New Year greetings to you all. Alex

MOVING FORWARD at BROMLEY ROAD

The builders start work on Monday November 5th. This means that many parts of the church will be ‘out of bounds’ and we must follow instructions about where we may go on the premises. There will be two points of entry - Bevington Road and via the right-of-way to the door by the Annexe. Locks will be changed and safety and security will be very important.

Please watch out for changes which apply to you as you move around the premises.

Worship in the Bevington Hall has begun and the smaller space encourages good fellowship amongst us. We also work together to set out before and clear away after worship. Please let Jenny know if you can help in this way.

PRAYER TIME

We continue to meet for prayer on Sundays at 10.00am before Morning Service in the Wesley Lounge. Come and be part of this group.

No one is under pressure to express themselves in prayer and it is perfectly acceptable to remain silent throughout our Prayer Time.

IBRA

The books for 2019 will be available the first week in December. The price is £9.99 for the year. Marie

POSTAGE STAMPS

I am still collecting postage stamps, British and foreign, for the Leprosy Mission. There is not so much mail delivered these days but at Christmas most people get cards, so please save the stamps. If you are able to cut the stamp from the envelope leav-ing about 1/4 inch margin, thank you. Otherwise leave it on the envelope. Now that we are worshipping in the Bevington Hall you will need to hand the stamps to me personally. Thank you. Ena Hamblyn

Poster found in a Church in France . . . (translated):

When you enter this church it may be possible that you hear “the call of God”.

However, it is unlikely that He will call you on your mobile. Thank you for turning off your phones.

If you want to talk to God, enter, choose a quiet place and talk to Him. If you want to see Him, send Him a text while driving.

NEWS OF THE CHURCH FAMILY

Colin Wilson thanks all those who sent cards and kind messages following his fall last month. He is making progress, albeit slowly, and says ‘it’s not much fun looking at the ceiling for the majority of the day’! Joe: it is good to see Joe back among us on Sundays; thanks to Catherine for driving him in to church. David H: it has been good to see David at church again, too. The Redevelopment Team & Helpers: It is good to pause here to thank the Team and all those who have helped in the tremendous task of planning and re-arranging the church furniture and finding homes for all the 101 items which go to make up a functioning church.

TCs TCs Café is due to open again on Monday 12th November 10.30am - 2.30pm - this time in the Richmond Room.

Access will be via the right-of-way at the side of the church and one flight of stairs. I am pleased to report that the majority of our colleagues will be continuing to serve, whilst Valerie Wilson (Tues) and Eng Pettet (Fri) are taking their well-earned retirement. We have recruited two new colleagues, Jan, who will work with June on Wednesday mornings and Christine, who will work with Sheila on Tuesday mornings. We still need two more volun-teers, one for Tuesday afternoons and one for Friday mornings. It would also be helpful to have one or two folk who would be willing to be called upon in case of illness or other emergency. If you know anyone who might be interested in helping in any way please let me or any other staff know.

Please pass on the news of our re-opening to your friends and any customers that you know. Mary Jackson

MEN’S FORUM

The Men’s Forum continues to meet regularly at Clock House on the sec-ond Saturday of each month in order to share fellowship, followed by lunch.

Most recently we have had a most enlightening illustrated talk by Dr Max-well Asante, who brought us up to date with technical developments in treating intestinal diseases.

Our programme for the remainder of the year is being prepared and will include a presentation by Dr Clive Timehin and a musical presentation by Martin Ball.

We continue to share fellowship with Bromley Methodist Church on either the third or fourth Thursday, followed by lunch.

You are cordially invited to join our small but eager group and share our fellowship. Graham McLeod

South London Singers

The South London Singers begin their new season with a concert at St George’s Church, marking the centenary of the signing of the Armistice in 1918. The concert includes the Choral Suite from The Armed Man - a Mass for Peace by Karl Jenkins, as well as a se-lection of anthems on the theme of peace and is at 7.45pm on Sat-urday November 10th. Anthems include Greater Love Hath No Man by John Ireland, This is the Day by John Rutter, the Beatitudes by Arvo Pärt, Her-bert Sumsion’s They that go down to the Sea in Ships and Have you not known composed by our own David Thorne for the RAF Chapel at Biggin Hill to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain. The choir will also be premiering a new arrange-ment by their former conductor, John Nightingale, of the well-known poem For the Fallen by Laurence Binyon. Tickets are £11 and available from choir members or from the of-fice at St George’s.

The SLS have been really encouraged to have some new younger members join this season but are particularly keen to recruit more singers, especially basses. Rehearsals take place in the Epworth/Richmond rooms on Mondays and will continue from November 12th preparing for the next concert in February 2019.

SUBMITTING ARTICLES FOR THE INDICATOR

We hope more of our readers are inspired to submit book reviews, personalia items and articles to be included in the Indicator.

When doing so, please would you make sure that you add your name to any item so that folk can follow up if they want to know more.

For published items, please also ensure you have the permission of the author and then add their name as author of any work. The Editorial Team

CLOTHES BANK AT HOLY TRINITY CHURCH

Just because ’that box’ is no longer in the New Room I will still be collect-ing gifts to go to the Clothes Bank and all the usual items are needed i.e. men’s clothing (clean please) and toiletries of every kind.

I will endeavour to be around on future Sundays to clear any items which are put in the box provided.

Now that the temperature is dropping it is more vital than ever that we maintain our support.

Thank you very much for all past and, hopefully, future gifts to this worth-while cause.

FUND FOR HUMAN NEED

A quote from the Fund’s Autumn newsletter reveals that:

“Demands on our services continue to increase with applications coming from local authorities, voluntary organisations, NHS trusts and citizens ad-vice bureau on behalf of the homeless, people whose benefits have been reduced or stopped, asylum seekers and others who are destitute. FHN must constantly raise more income and we are seeking to do this by: Using a grant from Methodist Action on Poverty and Justice. This funds all our ad-ministration meaning 100 per cent of your donations go to those of our ‘neighbours’ in the most need”.

From this I hope you will see how your donations at After Service Coffee time are so valuable and so needed.

Words to think about

God has work to do with us that will not be done without us. St Augustine My father gave me the greatest gift anyone could give another person: he believed in me. Jim Valvano Contributions from Joe:

I heard from a friend that his kitchen flooded very late at night. Thames Water would not help, as their responsibility ceases at one’s front door, but suggested dialling 999 for the Fire Brigade. A surprise to my friend, but the Brigade arrived without their si-ren blazing and were most helpful, knew exactly how to stop the flooding and not at all annoyed by such a call very late at night. I had forgotten that they are now also called a Rescue Service.

My elderly friend was overjoyed. So, don’t hesitate, be sensible about your problem and dial 999.

……………….

Try to realise all the blessings you have, and you will perhaps find that they are more than you suppose. Many a blessing has been recognised too late.

………………..

It is vain to ask God to make us good. He never makes anyone good. We may ask him to help us to become good - that he al-ways does.

…………………..

There’s no glory save to try to wipe tears from another’s eye.

BOOK REVIEW

Seen and submitted by Arthur Allan

THE HALF-SHILLING CURATE, a personal account of war and faith 1914-1918 by Sarah Reay. ISBN 978-1-911096-46-7 This book tells the story of Captain the Revd Herbert Butler Cowl, MC, a Wesleyan Methodist Army chaplain with the Durham Light Infantry. Sarah Reay, his biographer, is his grand-daughter.

The “half-shilling curate” refers to the pet name which he used in corre-spondence with his parents early in his military service. The expression, “not being the full shilling”, was applied to someone who was unintelligent or slow which was certainly not the case with Herbert Cowl, though he was young and inexperienced in his military role.

The book traces Herbert Cowl’s life chronologically, with strong emphasis on his service in the DLI and on his ministerial life, especially in London during the blitz of the Second World War.

Herbert was a son of the manse, born in 1886, and began life as a Wesleyan minister at Grenville Chapel in Bristol in 1910. On Christmas Eve 1914 he became a Temporary Chaplain to the Forces and served with the 68th Bri-gade, largely composed of men from the North-East of England.

Surviving correspondence within his family tells an almost day by day ac-count of his time on the Franco-Belgian border near Armentières; his wounding and passage home on the hospital ship HMHS Anglia. When the ship hit a mine and sank, Herbert found unknown reserves of strength to help save others for which he was awarded the Military Cross.

The book records his slow recovery and return to civilian life as a chaplain and back into Methodist circuit ministry.

“As we commemorate the centenary of the Armistice and the end of ‘the war to end all wars’, we will do well to remember Herbert Cowl and the many thousands who served King and Country.”

1914 - The First World War A tour of the battlefields

This year we are remembering the 100th anniversary of the end of the first world war. Many more people have been visiting the battlefields of France to remember this time as they have been doing over the years. Not least to remind themselves of the sacrifice made by so very many. George and I undertook such a tour 4 years ago, with the Imperial War Museum at Duxford, to remember the start of the conflict, a traumatic and difficult period in our his-tory. As I reported at the time the experience was an intensely moving one. We visited lots of places on the Somme and in Flanders. There were many famous names during the three days we looked around, Ypres, La Boiselle, Lochnagar Crater, Vimy Ridge, Tyne Cot, Zonnebeke - and many more. We saw first hand how close the young men of both sides were to each other and realised how

Page 13: Beckenham Methodist Church · 2020. 7. 29. · Armed Man - a Mass for Peace by Karl Jenkins, as well as a se-lection of anthems on the theme of peace and is at 7.45pm on Sat-urday

13

terrified they must have been. The conditions they lived in we could only imagine after looking at photographs. For me one of the sights that affected me the most at the time was the number of small cemeteries dotted in fields everywhere you looked. We were told that this was because it had been decided to bury the soldiers where they fell, unlike some countries who bring them together in large cemeteries. These memories have stayed clearly with me still and I think will never fade. All the graves we visited were beautifully maintained by the War Graves Commission - the least we can do for those who were found. At the end of our visit we attended the ceremony at the Menin Gate at Ypres where one of our number placed a wreath in memory of members of the Air Force who died in the conflict. These ceremonies are still taking place every night at 8pm and there are crowds from all over the world attending. The Anniversary of the end of the war was especially remembered and will I am sure continue to be so. So, was the visit worth it? We thought so at the time and still do. Both of our fathers served in the first world war and we count ourselves lucky that they re-turned to their families. So many however were not as lucky as us and thus families lives were changed for-ever. It seems the least we can do to remember the sacrifice made by so many. Christine Handel, October 2018

Lord Stamp of Shortlands and Beckenham Methodists

Sir Josiah Stamp is little remembered today, even locally. This is to be re-gretted as in the inter-war years he was a man of great repute and his name was frequently in the press. Moreover, he lived for many years in Short-lands. He was President and Chairman of the biggest of the big four railways, the London, Midland & Scottish (LMS) and he was frequently in demand to chair government commissions.

It has been said that Josiah had an outstanding intellect and an enormous capacity for work with an exceptional grasp of detail. He never wasted time and never appeared hurried despite speaking very quickly. He enjoyed good health and was a teetotaller and non-smoker. He was always patient and considerate; loyal to family and friends and it was said that it was almost impossible to quarrel with him.

In November 1897 he met 19 year old Olive Marsh at the Wesleyan Chap-el, Catford and they married in 1903. Wilfrid was born in 1904, followed by Trevor in 1910, Maxwell in 1915 and Colin in 1917.

In 1919 Josiah was knighted for his work during the war and in 1922 he and his young family moved to Park Hill Road, Shortlands, to a big Victorian house, Tantallon.

In 1924 he was British representative in Paris on the Dawes committee on German Reparations and also became governor of the London School of Economics. In 1928 he became a Director of the Bank of England.

While he lived in Shortlands, Josiah and his family worshipped at Becken-ham Methodist Church, into whose activities he and his wife actively im-mersed themselves. His activities included occasional lay preaching, church trustee and chair of the committee which from 1932 oversaw the finances of the church.

Josiah Stamp and his wife were dedicated Methodists. He was not in any way fanatical about religion but it can be said that it pervaded his whole life. Another local involvement was Beckenham Hospital. Lady Stamp was ap-pointed to the board in 1927 and served on several of its committees.

16

With such a distinguished record of public service, it was not surprising that in 1938 Josiah Stamp was ennobled, choosing the title Lord Stamp of Shortlands. During the night of 16 April 1941 Josiah Stamp died due to the shockwave from the bomb that fell beneath the basement of their house, causing it to rise. The family died as they sat during the air raid. In addition to Lord Stamp and his wife, their eldest son, Wilfrid, and their pet golden spaniel were also killed. There is a road named after him, Stamp Close, which is just off the western side of Southend Road. The Stamp Memorial Lecture was endowed in 1942 to commemorate his life and normally takes place at the London School of Economics. Memorial tablets to this remarkable man and his son Wilfrid can be seen in the sanctuary at the Methodist Church in Bromley Road. They will still be in place after the redevelopment. Thanks to Valerie Wilson for this glimpse of his life. She is one of the few people (only person?) to remember the family sitting towards the back of the church, pulpit side. She also remembers his warm smile when, as a child, she was al-lowed to take the collection. Gordon Hughes adds that Lord Stamp’s funeral was held at Beckenham Method-ist Church, Bromley Road on 21 April 1941. Two days later there was a large attendance at the Westminster Abbey memorial service. The Bromleag Journal, with the Lord Stamp article, may be borrowed from Colin Wilson or Gordon Hughes and later it will be kept with our church archives. The article brought further information: The Times of 11 May 1935 reported that the Charter Mayor Elect Sir Josiah Stamp’s gifts to Beckenham include the mace of office and 100 guineas to the Charter Day Celebration Fund.

In 1965, when five districts merged to form the Lon-don Borough of Bromley, the Beckenham Borough Mace was retained and every time the Council meets it is remembering Sir Josiah Stamp.

SCRIPTURAL REASONING

Thursday 15th November from 7pm

Methodist Central Hall Westminster (SW1H 9NH)

Scriptural Reasoning is an excellent opportunity for Christians to come together with our Interfaith brothers and sisters, Jews and Muslims, to read and discuss their scriptures, to discover more about the Qur’an and the Hebrew Bible, and to see the New Tes-tament through the eyes of other believers.

The District are hosting a Scriptural Reasoning evening (see above). This is a free event - all are welcome to come along.
