If you are considering running for the Board of Directors, we ask you to read and consider the following: Do I have the time? As a Board member, you will need to devote at least several hours each month to association business. In addition to regular Board meetings and workshops, you will have occasional special meetings. During special projects, you may need to devote additional time and most Board members spend extra time working with a committee. Can I make difficult decisions when it is required? Board members are required to step outside their immediate circle of family, friends and neighbors to make decisions based on the greater good of our entire community. Board Highlights Submitted by Peter Cavoto

Many of you have asked why the Board didn’t buy the house for sale on Indigo. The Board did consider the purchase for several months. However, with the attorney’s advice and the consideration of re-zoning issues with Pinal County, it was determined that financially this would not work at this time. It took over a year to have the Sunset re-zoned to be part of our Campus plot. We will be planning to have things ready should another property become available.

The Pickleball design is at architectural drawing phase. Four people went to Pinal County to ask about moving forward. This does not require a re-plat but will require meeting park-ing, drainage and landscape regulations from Pinal. Building and Grounds has been tasked to develop a plan to increase parking.

The Sunset remodel is slated for completion Jan. 1. We thank all the groups who have graciously adjusted to sharing space and relocation. Crane Construction gives us weekly updates via pictures and progress reports that are sent to the Board and eblasts to residents. We are extremely pleased working with this quality company.

The Activities Committee has had a great start. The pool party had excellent attendance as did the first dance on Hal-loween. The dance committee and decorating committees are to be commended on the fabulous decorations that remain in Superstition. We certainly have some talented residents.

The Board voted to keep Wednesday Canyon Cookout at the Mesquite Center. Thanks to Jack Twa and Ed Butler for vol-unteering to continue coordinating this event. The locked

storage and ease of service at the Mesquite kitchen have been well received by users. There are outside tables on the old horse shoe pits and users will notice new grills on which to cook.

Many trees were lost last year and this year. The Insurance claim will fund re-planting of some. Please DO NOT RE-MOVE THE PINK FLAGS along MountainBrook Drive and Mountain Foothills Drive. These are place markers for new trees. However, because the original MBV irrigation system was stopped and has since disintegrated, watering would be needed to establish the trees. It is also hoped that some other plants could be planted which also would need water to be established. Yes, plants, even if native to the desert, require water to be established. You can gradually decrease the water to low or none, but you cannot shock them by giving no wa-ter at all.

The annual pancake breakfast was held on Oct. 31. Thank you to Larry England and his crew, Coy, FSR and the com-munity.

The Board voted 5:2 to not purchase new fitness equipment but to replace the old equipment when it breaks down.

The Board voted unanimously to have a Hale Theatre expert come evaluate our Superstition lighting.

Remember, if you are interested in participating on any of the steering committees, please sign up in the activity office starting December 1 until December 31, 2018. The Board requested last year that each steering committee was to have one new steering member annually. Not only are steering members needed, but experts and volunteers are also needed.

Come Dance With Us by Lynnel Cochrane

While it is still weeks away from Christmas, Clement Moore's familiar refrain:

"To the top of the porch! To the top of the wall!

Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!" is already echoing in our heads. If you think you need a distraction from all the 'dashing' around, come and join your neighbors for a casual evening of dancing and mer-riment among the glittering Christmas Trees in the Su-perstition Center Our Up, Up, and Away themed dance party on Friday, December 7 will feature the popular duo The Breeze. They will be playing a variety of fa-vorite dance music which will provide a much-needed energy boost to help you enjoy the festive season. So, come and take your mind off your 'things to do list' and have a night of light-hearted fun. Your dance commit-tee would like to also take this opportunity to wish "A Happy Christmas to All, and to All a Good Night!"

Thinking about renting your home? Please read below first.

The MBV website and the Mountaineer run ads for home rentals in MBV and states they must be for a 30-day minimum. The renters also need to be 55 or older. There was recently a home on an online rental website, with a listing to rent a house in MBV for 1 or more nights at a time. We are also seeing ads on local social media. The CC&R’s clearly address the approved time frames and ages of those that can rent in MBV. CC&R 10.20.4 states “No Owner may lease less than his, her or its en-tire Lot.” (This means no renting out just the Casita.) “No Lot may be leased for a period of less than thirty (30) days.” A renter must be 55+, and kids under 18 may only stay in the home for a total of 90 days per year, not 90 days per child or per rental. If you have any questions, give the office a call.

Let there be lights!

Lighting up MountainBrook is set for Monday November 19th. Again this year, we are counting on our volun-teers to help. Sign up in the office or -- just show up. Plan to meet at 8:30 A.M. at the Superstition Center.

Then, after the Christmas season you are welcome to join us on Wednes-day, January 2nd. for the take down.

Celebration of Live

A Celebration of Life service for former MountainBrook resident, Linda Davidson will be held Sunday, December 16, 2018 in the Mesquite Room at 2:00 pm. Linda passed away April 2.

Superstition Kitchen Remodel

Have you wondered why the Board remodeled the Super kitchen or what it looks like? The remodel of the Super-stition Kitchen has been on the list to be remodeled from the 2015 survey. There were significant problems such as: doors falling off cabinets, ovens that did not work if the AC was turned on, lack of appropriate storage and a difficult work flow.

MBV utilized the expertise of Madonna Schelot, a resi-dent licensed Interior Designer, to develop the kitchen work-use zones. The coffee pots are stored behind the entrance door from the Superstition Center to enable the service of coffee and tea from the window opening. Elec-tricity was added below the window for crockpots, etc. The two sinks and dishwasher allow adequate cleaning.

Located in the back corner is the ice maker, a bar-sink, and the storage of pitchers and ice buckets allowing for ease in filling with water and ice. The ovens and stove tops remained in the previous location.

There are two large stainless carts that can be used for potlucks and for our Thanksgiving dinner. Two smaller carts that store underneath can carry ice buckets and pitchers out to tables. They also can be used for food. Our Lifestyle Director was extremely pleased with the new storage options. The white smooth cabinets and quartz counter make for ease of cleaning. The vinyl plank floor-ing is cost effective, cushioned and water proof for spills.

Thanks to the Planning Committee for effective, efficient design planning.

A Successful First Season, Looking Forward to Next Season.

At our final Sunday Night Movie, THE KING AND I, everyone in attendance got in character and wore crowns furnished by Burger King. Co-Hosts for the season were Ken and Lola Lester and Butch and Pat Patt. Looking ahead to next season, start thinking of movie suggestions from your own collections and let the Co-chairs know. Thanks for a great season of SUNDAY NIGHT MOVIES.

Volunteerism Sign Me Up! Suzanne Murray, CMCA, AMS, PCAM

While serving on the Board is probably the most visible example of volunteerism in our association, there are many other ways that you can contribute your time and talents to improve our community, such as serving on a committee.

Your participation in the community is beneficial to you, your neighbors, and the association. Common benefits gained by volunteering include:

making a positive difference in other peoples’ livessharing or learning new skills

meeting new peoplehaving fun

Do not let our community suffer from lack of enthusiasm. Even a few hours of your time can make a big difference in the culture of the community. Help us generate good-will, encourage “paying it forward,” and strengthen our community.

The volunteer sign-up book for The MountainBrook Vil-lage Board standing committees will be placed in the Ac-tivity Center front desk area from December 1 to Decem-ber 31, 2018 if you are interested.

Those Pesky HOA’s

Just a friendly reminder By Alex Willingham

Now that everyone is coming back, I just wanted to re-mind everyone about 2.9.2 Recreational Vehicles, Boats and Mobile Homes rule. Following this rule helps Moun-tainBrook Village streets stay clear and safe in case of an emergency. Please read and follow the rule below to avoid fines.

2.9.2 Recreational Vehicles, Boats and Mobile Homes No mobile home, motor home, boat, recreational vehicle, trailer, truck, camper, or other vehicles of similar kind

may be parked or stored on any public street or right of way or on any residential lot for a period exceeding sev-enty-two (72) hours for the purposes of loading, unload-ing and cleaning such vehicles; refer to Paragraphs 10.3 and 10.11.2 in the CC&Rs. If for any reason, mechanical or otherwise, one of the above type vehicles must exceed the seventy-two (72) hour limit, please contact the Man-agement Company. Recreational vehicles shall not be occupied by guests or any persons while parked on streets at houses. As a matter of safety, all slide outs shall be pulled in before dusk. At all times, RVs shall be parked so as not to create an obstruction for emergency response vehicles. Streets shall be protected with suitable wooden blocks or shocks to prevent damage by leveling devices or jacks. Overnight parking of visitor/guest RVs is not permitted.

Did you ever wonder, “How do I get this taken care of”?

And then think “Oh it’s probably too much trouble, I’ll just forget it.” Well, most things are pretty simple, because, guess what? THERE IS A FORM FOR IT! And here is a picture of the binders where you can find the forms in the office, and best of all, they are alphabetical. Here is an example. If you want to place a classified ad in the Mountaineer, there is a form for that. Just fill it out and give it to one of the front office staff members. If you have some time maybe you would like to go to the office and just browse thru the binders to see what all is available. Sounds like a fun afternoon doesn’t it?

Here are a few reminders:

Before making any changes to your yard or the outside of your house, there is a procedure for going through the Architectural

Committee for approval.

There is also a book with all the paint choices approved for repainting. Be sure and check it out first, having to repaint again is no fun. This form can be approved by our Assistant Manager.

When planting or replanting, there is also a book with ap-proved desert hardy shrubs and trees.

Remember, just because you see something in someone else’s yard that doesn’t mean it has been approved. Please check it out before following in their footsteps because you might step in something.

Artist of the Month—Dave Osborn

We are honored to have Dave for our ARTIST of the MONTH. Dave passed away in the spring following a short illness. Not only was Dave a very great artist, he served on several MBV Committees. Dave says —

Drats! Kicked out of typing class in the 9th grade on some trumped up charges of not having my own typing pa-per….again. What’s Mom going to say! There went my dream of being president of the corner bank someday.

I always liked drawing, so. art classes, having a representation of being much less rigid were particularly appealing to me that morning as I took the long walk to the Principal’s Office to declare my new major.

After military service in Germany, I worked as an Industrial/graphic designer in the field of advertising, point of sale mate-rial, signage and corporate identity. I retired as president of the Point of Sale Division of Everbrite Intl., Milwaukee, WI.

After Barbara and I retired to MBV in 1999, I renewed my interest in painting watercolors and started painting more seri-ously. I was represented by the Fredericksburg (TX) Art Gal-lery for nine years and former member of the Arizona Water-color Association.

The holiday celebration is chocked full of variety, a hall-mark of all Village Voices concerts. Jolly songs about Rudolph and Frosty, colds in noses, and Christmas “cheering” will be sprinkled in with hymns, such as An-gels We Have Heard on High and an awe-inspiring ver-sion of Handel’s Joy to the World. Hearts will be

warmed with lilting pieces about the Colors of Christmas and Christmas Memories plus many more.

Tickets ($10 including refreshments) are for sale now at the MountainBrook Activity Office. Tickets may be available for purchase at the door on the evenings of the concerts, but the Village Voices Christmas concerts usu-ally sell out each year so purchase of tickets before the concert dates is strongly suggested. MOON OVER BUFFALO Bill Wash

Moon Over Buffalo was selected for the MBV Theatre’s play to be performed February 21-24 (Thursday through Sunday), 2019. The play offers great character work and a lot of physical comedy. The set will contain multiple doors with actors running through in a series of near misses. Some scenes are played as a play within the play, such as when George and Charlotte Hay play Cyrano and Roxanne as they face off, then start fencing in the best Errol Flynn tradition. Then there’s grumpy, trouble maker Ethel whose hearing loss leads to several complications throughout the play. As a note of interest, this play brought Carol Burnett back to Broadway (playing Char-lotte Hay) in 1955 after a 30-year absence. Kathy Buelow will direct Moon Over Buffalo and is now fully occupied with stage setting, props, costumes, etc. and is excited to begin onstage practice.

The Theatre’s Board of Direc-tors invites all those interested in acting, directing or to sup-port future plays with assist-ing behind the scenes to at-tend a Board meeting. Board meetings are “open” meet-ings. The Board welcomes ideas, suggestions, recom-mended plays, ask questions or to just visit with the Board to learn about the Theatre. Currently, the Board is ex-ploring ideas on expanding its involvement in theater on campus. The Board meets every first Thursday of the month from October through April at 1:00pm in the Palo Verde Room. Please note, because of campus construc-tion, the Board has been temporarily moved from the Palo Verde Room to the Arts & Craft Room. If any questions, please call Bill Wash at 480 983-1791.

Keely, can you put the Events Page here. It is attached as a pdf file. Between the office copy and my computer it gets very wonky, She has tried putting it in Pub-lisher and then I group it and move it over and that doesn’t work. To snip it, as I did last month, it comes out blurry. Thanks

ALSO attached is the Calendar. As you can see, when I attached the file to Pub-lisher this month 1st row of info under Mon, Wed & Fri a black line appears. Tried it twice.

Mountaineer November 2018

A new resident, Judy Halma, owned two bed and breakfasts in Appleton, WI. After 14 years of sharing her 19th century houses with her guests,

She has written 8 chapters in one of the two cook-books that she published. In this Mountaineer is one chapter called:

Sunshine Sue Guests come in all sizes, ages, colors and shapes. Sue's caregiver called me about making a reservation for a handicapped female. Sunshine Sue would be traveling by bus from Michigan. The caregiver asked, "Would you be willing to pick Sue up at the bus depot since it's only two blocks from your inn? Can your inn accom-modate her needs because she can't use stairs? Do you feel comfortable helping her with lodging for one week?

The caregiver had called the perfect place for Sue's lodging. I replied , "Yes, we'd be happy to have her. My husband and I were foster parents for handicapped peo-ple for seven years. And, we do have a first floor guest room."

A five hour bus ride could be challenging for anyone, imagine navigating the ride with no legs! Sue was sched-uled to arrive at 8:00 p.m., but called around 5:00 p.m. to tell us that she had missed the bus in Chicago. "I will take the next bus available but it's scheduled to arrive at midnight in Green Bay rather than Appleton. Can you pick me up there instead?" She apologized profusely.

"Sure, Sue. I understand your frustration . I will be there for you. How will I find you?"

"I'm in a wheelchair. I am a black lady with an afro hairdo.

"What had I gotten myself into? Instead of driving two blocks, I was now headed out on a sixty-mile round-trip journey. I would probably be lucky to get to bed by 2:00 a.m. At what point do we say we are too busy, or too tired and unwilling to oblige someone in need? I kept my word and pointed the car toward Green Bay.

Finally arriving at the station, I watched everyone get off the bus. One of the last passengers to climb off was Sue. People were helping her get into her wheelchair. When I walked up to her, she just glowed like the rising sun, re-lieved to have someone available to rescue her! How could I have ever doubted making this journey to help this special woman?

Although we had just met, I was ready to plunge ahead and help her like she was my best friend! I asked Sue, "How can I help you best? Are you hungry? Do you need to stop at a bathroom?"

Sue informed me, "I have gone the whole day on the bus without food or using the bathroom. Yes, I would love to have a bathroom stop and get a burger, if you don't mind."

I drove until I found a McDonald's. She left the wheel-chair in the car for such a short distance, choosing instead to walk to the door on two hands, each using a rubber thong. She moved along just as if she had legs. Her arms were amazingly strong! Sue was only about three feet tall, but she calmly handled her needs, totally self-sufficient. No handicap held her back! The famous saying popped in my head, "Mind over matter.” Her determination and sunny personality surpassed any physical handicap. I could see how she could make it all the way from Michi-gan on her own. This woman was on a mission to go see the love of her life who lived only blocks from our B&B.

Tennis Talk by Betsy BakerTennis play continued this summer at MountainBrook. Due to a monsoon storm in July, courts 1 and 2 were out of commission for much of the summer, and players only had access to court 3. The fences were recently repaired, so get ready for the new season. Fall Tennis league tentative start dates are: Monday Womens Tennis October 29th; Tuesday Womens Tennis Octo-ber 30th; Wednesday Men’s Tennis November 7th; Friday Mixed Doubles November 9th. Doubles Tennis Tip- Identify Rover vs Anchor. When playing with a new partner, take a few minutes to decide who the “Rover” (the one who will cover much of the back court) and who the “Anchor” (the one who will handle the near court) will be. This is one of the techniques that will keep the partners working together instead of dividing their efforts. See YOU on the courts !

Pickleball News by Sheldon LessardWelcome to all our new MBV club members. We’re glad you could join us. Hopefully you’re enjoying some good competition and getting some laughs and exercise along the way. Remember we have “A” play from 7:00-9:00 and “B”/“B+” play from 9:00-11:00. If it’s not already been posted, we should have a reserva-tion sheet on our bulletin board soon. This allows residents to re-serve a court in one- or two-hour increments after the morning games. One court per household. Afternoon leagues, our commu-nity tournament and the 2nd annual MBV Pball Club versus Su-perstition Fire Department tournament are all in the planning stages. Keep an eye out for further information. Players tip...Keep your opponents in a defensive posture by using deep serves and deep returns. When they’re back, keep them back!

MBV Ceramics and Glass Arts The winter season is here and we have many classes set up. Sign-up sheets with pictures or the projects are available in the office. Be sure to look for the tab labeled “Ceramics” in the binder labeled “Classes” to sign up. Classes are limited to 12 unless otherwise noted. During the winter season, the Tuesday/Thursday schedule is as follows: Tuesday from 9:30 – 11:00 instructors for glass bottle slumping and glass fusion are avail-able; Tuesday afternoons are reserved for ceramics with instruc-tors available; Thursday mornings the studio is open to all tech-niques unless a class is scheduled; Thursday afternoons are open to all techniques.

Darts by John KloostermanNever underestimate a beginning dart thrower. Fred Greenway played darts for about a month before leaving last summer and has been back now for 4 months. When Fred returned to darts he got a healthy beginner’s handicap. Fred’s team has won games that have come down to the wire against experienced players. He has now earned a new title as the current “Bulls Eye King” by finish-ing a game with 2 single bulls and a double bull. Congratulations, Fred!! And our own experienced dart player, Stan Condell, has proved himself with just three darts. Stan popped a triple 20, triple 19, and a triple 18 closing half the numbers in a game of “Dirty Cricket”. Wow! World class darts happening right here in MBV. Join us for an evening of fun. TUESDAY evenings at 6:30 pm in the Ocotillo MPR. See you there!!

Pinochle Report by Barb HofmeisterThe Thursday evening group starts to gather in the Mesquite room about 6:30 and play begins at 7 p.m. If you would like to learn the game or brush up, please call me at 480-288-9745 and I will meet you there at 6 pm and we will have a class and practice before play starts. We are a fun and very friendly group. For the September/October games Jim McCann was the high scorer three of the four weeks. His scores were 552, 575 and 622. Bonny Niel-sen won once with a score of 542. I’m looking for new winners.

The Tuesday Ladies’ Pinochle group meets at1:00 PM in the Mesquite room. We are a friendly group and welcome new members. Contact Sharon Hanson at 480-415-0859 if you have any questions.

Friends of the Library by Ruth ParkerWelcome back all you heat escapees. During the warmth of the summer, the full timers kept your library up and running and awaiting your return. You'll find the library still full of reading material, a puzzle is still set up on the table under the window. There's a recent category on the shelf under the Recent Arrivals, it's called Miscellaneous. There are some books that kind of defy a genre, so, we invented a new one. You'll find a variety of book titles there. And of course, there is still internet access available as well as cozy, quiet spots to sit and read. So, your library awaits, come on in and enjoy.

Book Discussion b y P e g g y Ma l s o mHave you ever wanted to live a life of adventure? Maybe you have dreamed of moving to Alaska, fishing for salmon, hunting and growing your own food? In our December book selection, The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah, young Leni escapes the bleakness of her home and poverty by reading books. Join her on an epic, hero’s journey of contrasts where she is both free in the Alaskan wilderness and confined by her home. Her physical journey from Seattle to Alaska mirrors her emotional journey. Ask yourself this question: Are you ready to go off the grid? Just like an Alaskan winter, this tale is chilling, beautiful and unforgiving. Book Dis-cussion meets the second Wednesday of every month at 2:00 pm in the Multi-Purpose Room. It is not mandatory that you read the book before attending. See you there December 12. Brrr.

Social Hour: Every Tuesday night year ‘round, there’s a long standing, very popular, free MountainBrook event in the Superstition Center. Residents gather at 5:00 PM to enjoy an evening out with old and new friends. The LAST Tuesday of the month is a POTLUCK which is meant to be a full meal. The fare on “regular” Tuesdays could be classified as snacks/appetizers or desserts. As are all MBV events, this is BYOB. MountainBrook provides the table-ware. The Chairperson maintains a schedule of weekly volunteers to ‘Host’ the Social Hour. The task is simple, and it is another way to meet people. These volunteers set up the food tables, organize the food as it arrives, make the welcome announcements with a little clean up afterwards. Don’t be afraid. There are usually others who join in helping out. Please consider joining the group on a Tuesday night; singles and couples are welcome. We try to keep an eye out for new faces and welcome them to join a table of ‘veterans’. Arlene Pytko (480-288-8011) is the Chairperson for this event.

MBV Veterans Group Are you a military veteran? Did you know we have an informal group of veterans in MountainBrook that meets in the Mesquite Room every 3rd Monday of the month? Our main goal is to give veterans information regarding getting their VA benefits, a rating or a rating increase. We stress that getting registered in the VA system is the most important thing a veteran can do. Once regis-tered, the options available to you within the VA are endless. Some of your benefits include your spouse getting compensated. If you are interested in having a little social time with other vet-erans, hearing more about your VA benefits and where to go for help, why not try one of our meetings. If you’d like more infor-mation about the group and what we do, call Dennis Malsom, 425-315-6035.

In The Territory......... In Coolidge, AZ at the intersection of Highways 87 and 287 (about 30 miles from Gold Canyon) are the Casa Grande (“Great House”) Ruins of the Sonoran Desert peo-ple. This four-story structure was built during the 1300’s and was first discovered in 1694 by Spanish missionaries. President Woodrow Wilson declared it a National Monu-ment in 1918, and it then came under the auspices of the National Park Services.

The Sonoran people were very industrious and built a se-ries of canals and dams along the Salt River and Gila River Valleys. While corn was their primary staple, which they used to trade with other Native American tribes, they also grew several varieties of beans and squash, agave, cotton and tobacco. It is believed that the canals were used for over 1,000 years.

It is not certain what the Casa Grande was used for, but considering its age, it is a magnificent structure and well worth the short drive to explore with some of your winter visitors. There is an interesting museum located at the site which includes a short video to further explain the farm-ing and use of irrigation by these native people. There is an easy walking trail on the grounds so that you can ex-plore the ruins from all sides, along with some other re-mains. Be sure to take your National Park Service visitor's pass to receive complimentary admission and enjoy the ancient Arizona historical treasure.

Some Information for Our New Friends and Neighbors

480-644-2400

Snake relocation # 480-644-2400 – , it’swhen, not if, they will be visiting IN and AROUND YOUR HOUSE. The Fire Department responds quickly, but you must keep an eye on them until they get there.

Yikes! 13 rattlesnake species live in Arizona and some have seriously poisonous venom. Phoenix Herpetologi-cal Society says there are some things to do if you are bitten, (anything in parenthesis is editorial comments). Call 911 and stay calm (yeah right!). Keep the bitten area still, (very, very still). Remove any jewelry or constrict-ing items near the affected area in case of swelling (for most of us that means unbutton your waistband). Elevate the extremity that’s bitten.

DO NOT –Drive yourself to the hospitalUse ice to cool the biteCut open the wound and try to suck out the venom(yuck, and definitely do not ask your spouse to do it)Use a tourniquet, it will cut off blood flow and thelimb may be lost

To repeat the TO DO’s –Call 911Keep calmRemove jewelry or other restricting itemsElevate extremityWait for medical help to arrive.

This is good-to-know advice, but here’s hoping none of us ever have to use it.

Mountaineer November 2018

DON’T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT ITHow many times do we jump in the car to go to a friend’s house or a card game in the Mesquite Room and leave our wallet or purse at home? Since we drive on Pinal County roads within MountainBrook Village, we need to have our driver’s license with us in our car or golf cart. Oops, guilty as charged!

THE PECKING ORDER FOR THE PEDESTRIAN LANE

“Pedestrian” lane . . . . . . it is not a passing lane or aright turn lane or a driving lane – all of which we have all probably observed at one time or another. (Pedestrians' would include a person in a mobility device such as a scooter or power chair).

Pecking Order: 1st pedestrians, 2nd bikers, 3rd golf carts.
