It is my pleasure and privilege as the president of King’s College to extend my best wishes as you “Become a Monarch.” Our orientation process is designed to help you navigate the many details that are essential to a successful beginning of your collegiate life at King’s.

Our “Becoming a Monarch” orientation process is marked by the quality of professional services and personal attention for which we are proud to be known. As you work your way through the details presented in this booklet, I trust that many of your questions will be answered.

When you join us for the Summer Orientation program in July, I hope you will begin to build friendships with your fellow first-year students and have a great meeting with an academic advisor who will help you to review your courses. When you return for Fall Orientation in August, our Student Orientation team will welcome you with the hospitality and warmth that are hallmarks of our community and help prepare you to engage all the great opportunities that await you.

As you “Become a Monarch” I wish to draw your attention to a compelling phrase from our Mission Statement: “A Holy Cross education transforms minds and hearts with zeal in communities of hope.” As you join our King’s College family, I invite you to open your mind and heart to the transforming power of a great liberal arts education. I invite you to live with zeal by discovering and developing your deepest passions and interests. And I invite you to fully participate in the life of our community, so that our common hopes for a better world might be realized.

May God bless you and guide you.Sincerely,

Rev. John J. Ryan, C.S.C., Ph.D.President

FROM THE PRESIDENT

Events begin in the Sheehy-Farmer Campus Center at 8:30 a.m. and conclude by 4:00 p.m.

The second on-campus experience in our “Becoming a Monarch” program is so much more than an orientation; it is the beginning of a student’s life at King’s. At Fall Orientation our president, Fr. Ryan, will welcome the Class of 2024 to campus, and a premier faculty member will share a vision of academic life at King’s. Families can participate in these important moments as well as in campus tours. During Fall Orientation, you’ll meet with your first-year academic advisor, engage in your first service-learning experience through CitySERVE, and attend the first session of your Holy Cross Experience course. Along with this initial introduction to academic life, you’ll have the chance to enjoy cookouts and a variety of other social events and where you can hang out with new friends.

Register for the day of your choice or get a

detailed schedule online at the Orientation Portal.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR

The first on-campus experience in our “Becoming a Monarch” program is a great opportunity for incoming first-year students and their families. At Summer Orientation you’ll meet other first-year students, become familiar with King’s College technology, learn about expectations for college- level classwork, and meet one-on-one with an academic advisor to review your class schedule for the Fall 2020 semester. Parents and other family members will have an opportunity to ask questions related to a number of important concerns: financial aid, technology at King’s, what their student can expect in terms of adjusting to the first year of college, and how to access information regarding their student’s life at King’s.

All first-year students will join us for ONE of the Summer orientation sessions

HELPFUL DATES FOR

THE FALL SEMESTER

The following dates may help you plan for the Fall holidays and events with family and friends.

A NOTE TO PARENTSDEAR PARENTS AND GUARDIANS,As we welcome your student into the King’s College family, we invite you to share two important milestones with them: Summer and Fall Orientation. These two moments of orientation to life at King’s are designed to help your student to prepare to meet the challenge of transitioning to college and to feel at home with us. They are also designed to help you to walk with them, to learn more about the resources that King’s offers, and to grow in confidence that King’s is the right fit.

Our experience tells us that parents and guardians value these two moments.

Preparing for and attending Summer Orientation brings home the truth that your child is setting out on a new stage in life’s journey.

• Accompanying your student as they meet with their Academic Advisor to discuss course selection gives you insight into the opportunities and challenges that your student will encounter in the classroom.

• Attending a panel of professional staff that features your questions and concerns provides you with valuable information and puts a face to those who serve at King’s to help your student.

• Walking our campus again or for the first time deepens your familiarity with us and deepens the bonds of community that marks our life here at King’s.

Attending the first hours of Fall Orientation, whether your student will commute or live with us on campus, is a special moment.

• Accompanying your student as they move-in to their residence hall or check-in as a commuter immerses you in the excitement of this new beginning, and the hospitality that our staff, faculty, and returning students offer.

• Attending the President’s Welcome is a great opportunity to listen to our president, Fr. Jack Ryan and a distinguished member of the faculty address the entire Class of 2024 on the unique opportunities for growth in knowledge and wisdom that a King’s education provides.

• Blessing: In a very moving moment as the President’s Welcome draws to a close, parents and guardians rise, extend their hands in blessing, and pray together for the success of their students at King’s.

We imagine that as you prepare to send your child to King’s your deepest hopes and dreams accompany them. So, if you are able, please join us for these two milestone moments of Summer and Fall Orientation to help us make those hopes and dreams come true.

If you are unable to join your student for the Summer or Fall Orientation, you can share in these special moments by accessing materials that will be made available through the King’s College Parent Portal.
