A NOTE FROM ThE EDITOR

The SPCA Adventure Walk is an event hosted by SPCA’s in the Ekurhuleni region twice a year. The most recent Adventure Walk was held on Saturday 5 April in Boksburg. The objective is to create public awareness around the SPCA brand, and they use these opportunities to educate and inform the public of challenges that the SPCA deal with on a daily basis. The SPCA also has a registered Veterinary Surgeon on site to assist the public with any questions that they might have. This also serves as an opportunity for supporters to donate small items and food for all the animals that the SPCA

cares for on a daily basis. The event was attended by close to 150 dogs and their owners. To raise funds a small entry fee was charged and food and soft drinks were on sale. All services were either donated or volunteers from the various SPCA’s assisted in helping. This assists the SPCA greatly as all funds raised on the day will go directly to the animals in need. Photos and more details on the event can be viewed on the SPCA Adventure Dog Walk Facebook page. For more information about the next Adventure Walk contact the organiser Ann Martin on 082 909 5612.

Sasonah Lodge, situated in Germiston, run by the mother and daughter team of Colleen and Melanie Nunn together with a team of volunteers, has been caring for the elderly for almost 10 years and is ex-panding its operations with the newly acquired premises next to the existing care cent-er in Hamilton Street. Sasonah primarily operates as a frail care center for Alzheimer and Parkinson’s sufferers. The expansion is not only repre-sented by the obvious space which will allow the center to accomodate more patients, it will also allow Sasonah to add cancer care to their service of-ferings.The new house, situated at 26 Hamilton Street, is already fur-nished with all the necessary equipment and will be officially

opened on 17 May, however doors are open to patients and families in need of the homes’ services. Speaking to tame TIMES Colleen Nunn thanked the businesses and individuals who have assisted in the dress-ing of the home so far, but also expressed the need for more as-sistance.“Many elderly people are affect-ed by cancer so it’s with these individuals in mind that we made it our mission to establish a can-cer unit to care for terminally ill cancer patients on a longer term basis. After two years of battling we managed to raise funds to buy a property next door to the Alzheimer’s Centre and we have been working extremely hard to get it ready for patients, at long last we are ready to open our doors,” said Nunn

In an advert pertaining to tame TIMES, and in tame Times 5th year birthday editions, reference was made to tame TIMES having ‘over 3million readers” and “almost 3mil-lion readers are reached through out Ekurhu-leni, City of Johannesburg, Limpopo, North West and the Northern part of Gauteng”. This statement should have been qualified by refer-ring to the relevant time period applicable i.e. “per month”. The tame team wishes to apologise should this have caused any misconception or confu-sion. Taking the exponen-tial growth of tame TIMES into consideration, and the roll-out of the tame Times titles which is planned, we wish one day to ad-vise you, our readers and advertisers, that through your continuous support and loyalty, we are indeed reaching millions per week.

We have had yet another interesting week with happenings on the local and international fronts. Locally, and one happening which I cannot ignore, and perhaps readers are as excited as I am about this; the announcement of Zendai Modderfontein. The multi-billion de-velopment represents hope as international companies continue to show confidence in our country through such investments. I must say though that, although excited I remain on the fence, because as much as this is good news, this should not happen to us, but with us; the South African must be developed as they develop. We remembered Chris Hani and the tragic occurrence at the Ellis park Stadium which left 43 soccer lovers fallen as a result of security negligence and the ill-education of sports lovers, fortunately 11 years later we are moving in the right direction.Congratulations to the ladies of Sasonah Lodge on the newly acquired home which will allow their services to reach more peo-ple. Some interesting international news, one of the world’s most beloved sports person-alities is showing signs of recovery. Our thoughts remain with Schumacher and his family and we hope for a speedy recovery. While on sports; congratulations to Chiefs and Pirates on knocking out their Tswane ri-vals and securing semi-final positions in the Nedbank Cup Challenge. Stay Blessed

Dai revealed the first milestone to be the construction of a university, which is expected to be completed in one year, a contemporary art museum, the construction of primary and high schools and residential areas, all which are expected to be completed in three years. “in three years, 300 000 people will live and work in Modderfontein,” said Dai. This investment and many other investments from China are according to both Mr Mxolisi Xayiya and Mr Peidong Yang, evidence that China values its relationship with South Africa and the people of South Africa. Chief Designer; Dr. Bochong Chen presented Zendai as a socially conscious company which would through the construction of Zendai Modderfontein, seek to marry nature with the construction in order to achieve an

efficient and harmonic city full of vitality. In her address, Premier Mokonyane told of the long standing relationship between the ANC and the Communist Party of China.“Once more we have a good story to tell, attracting investors and continually working towards creating a conducive environment for investors to transact through easing the cost of doing business. We believe the investment secures the future of the African child. Political consciousness is a non-negotiable; this development must benefit not only those who have been, but also those who have not been,” said Mokonyane “Our vision for the Modderfontein new city is that it will become a unique landmark that will transform Modderfontein into an international cosmopolitan asset with cultural and art elements.” said Zhikang Dai in conclusion.

The phenomenal success of Cell C’s Take a Girl Child to Work Day® cam-paign, which takes place for the 12th time since its launch in 2003, has prompted the mobile network operator to launch a pilot mentorship programme called Girl Child Institute of Mentorship (GCIM). GCIM, under the patronage of Cheryl Caro-lus, involves a network of 35 leading business women and Cell C female executives, who will pledge their time and support to high achiev-ing Grade 12 female learners. Cell C has part-nered with the Adopt-A-School Foundation to assist in finding these learners from across South Africa. The mentorship programme will also extend to the bursary students on Cell C’s Girl Child Bursary programme. It will add depth and longevity to the Take a Girl Child to Work Day® programme. Instead of the girls experiencing a day in the busi-ness world, they will now be in a 12-month programme under the guidance of a mentor. Cell C has a powerful vision. It believes strong, smart, young girls with leadership qualities will one day produce a future where women will be vibrant contributors to the economy and leading job creators for South Africans. Jose Dos Santos, acting CEO of Cell C said, “We believe that we can do so much more for young people in this country. Take a Girl Child to Work Day® has exceeded all our expectations. We are humbled by the sup-port we receive from Corporate South Africa,

Government and Civil Society. How-ever, we believe that we can take it to a new level and have a meaning-ful impact on more young women through the launch of this institute.” Cell C’s long term vision, once it has piloted the programme, is for the Institute of Mentorship to cre-ate opportunities for successful and inspirational women leaders in SA, to join the movement and volun-teer their time and skills and make their own contribution to young female learners in this country. The idea of an institute was borne out of businesswoman and for-mer politician Cheryl Carolus’s vision to ensure that women not only pay it forward in the work-place but reach out to children who have the potential to be some-one and achieve great things. The Cell C Take a Girl Child to Work Day® campaign celebrates its 12th anniversary this year and will take place on 29 May, utilising the theme: “Dream, Believe, Achieve”. Cell C Take a Girl Child to Work Day® is targeted at Grade 10 to 12 South African girl learners, giving them the oppor-tunity to visit a place of work and to experi-ence, first-hand, the “world of work” and the various career opportunities available in the

industry and within the public service sectors. More than 50 000 young people are expect-ed to benefit this year as hundreds of com-panies around the country participate in this ground-breaking project.

Ekurhuleni remembersThembisile “Chris” Hani might not have lived to see the promise of a democratic South Africa, but his legacy lives on 21 years after his untimely death. Hani was killed at his Dawn Park home on 10 April 1993, in an incident that almost threw the country into violent political instability. As the country observes the 20th anniversary of a democratic South Africa, all eyes will be on the City of Ekurhuleni as it hosts the 21st anniversary commemorations of the life and times of Hani at the Thomas Nkobi Memorial Park in Boksburg tomorrow. The programme will start with a wreath laying ceremony at Hani’s gravesite between 10:00 and 13:00. The second part will be a memorial lecture at the Boksburg Civic Centre at 17:00. This event has become the highlight of a month-long programme declared the Chris Hani month in the City of Ekurhuleni: a month reserved to remember Hani and what he lived for through various programmes.Last year’s lecture was delivered by National Chairperson of the ANC Baleka Mbete, and once again this year, it is expected to be

yet another veteran of the struggle for liberation and a comrade to the late Hani. The lecture plays a pivotal role in the preservation of South African history and provides insight into the real legacy left by Hani. The Chris Hani Oral History debates on Saturday 12 April 2014 at Dawnpark Primary School between 09:30 and 14:00 will go a long way in ensuring our learners from schools across Ekurhuleni understand the significance of the legacy of Hani in their time and how they can live up to the values for which the freedom fighter shed his blood. On April 16 the City will host the theatre production “Amandla” at the Springs Theatre at 18:30. Amandla gives an unsparing view of South Africa’s journey to freedom through Acapella music, coupled with great

actors and talented vocalists. Last year the City introduced the Chris Hani Tribute Concert which saw the likes of Lira, Caiphus Semenya, Letta Mbulu, Malik and Berita entertain crowds at the Germiston Lake.

History will be kind to me for I intend to write it - Winston Churchill Is there any value in history? Does remem-bering benefit us equally? These questions probably seem random I know, but that is only because you are not yet in my mind-space. Just to give a little background on what got me considering these questions, in the previ-ous week as South Africans we remembered the death of Chris Hani in 1993 and we also remembered the 43 people who tragically passed away eleven years ago in what we today know as the Ellis Park tragedy. Now to get the obvious answers out of the way, remembering definitely affects us positively when one considers that just by remembering we can make sure such hap-penings never happen again. So we buy our tickets in time, arrive at the stadium ahead of time and we stay away if we do not have tickets for games. Is that just about correct? This is easy when dealing with the second is-sue, but when we remember Hani and many others who lost their lives fighting for the South Africa we now call home then things become slightly shifty. When Churchill said history would be kind to him, he indirectly re-vealed a trait of mankind. We will tell the sto-ry but only from a viewpoint which highlights points which make us look better or better yet in a manner which forces the receiver of the story to view us in a positive light. I don’t particularly have a problem with this, if nothing else this mannerism encourages everyone to tell their story. What I do have a problem with is the shortage of an open-minded story receiver, South Africa remains divided precisely because of this. I was driving somewhere during the week when I noticed one election poster which read “the SACP says Do it for Hani - Vote ANC,” and this got me thinking. What good will an ANC vote do for the memory of Chris Hani? Then the answer came to me - History favours those in power. In my opinion progress will only come as a result of free thinking, sometimes re-membering only keeps us bogged down the past we have to be growing away from. Let’s chat, let us in on your opinion at [email protected] or send a tweet to @NietoVoice

On Tuesday 2014-04-01 at 07:20 the complainant states that he was patrolling when he saw a suspicious looking African male in Moregloed Street, Klopperpark. He stopped the police vehicle and called the man and the suspect dropped a yellow plastic bag, which, upon investigation was found

was found to contain Dagga. The suspect apologised. The dagga with a weight of 3.95 grams was weighed in the presence of the suspect. The suspect was then arrested and charged with possession of dagga. He has since appeared in Edenvale court and after admission the man was fined.

On 2014-02-14 at about 01:20 a complainant alleged that he was asleep with his wife at home when five African males came through the bathroom window. The suspects demanded money and he told them that it was in his jacket. They searched it and then said was not enough and threatened to rape his wife if they didn’t get enough money. They said somebody told them that they have money in the house. They demanded that he open the safe and he took them to

the safe and they asked him to open it. The suspects took some money and jewellery. They asked for the keys of his car and the remote for the gate and they got away with his white Honda and some other looted items. As the investigation proceeded, Bedfordview detectives nabbed three suspects that were positively linked to this house robbery, and they will be appearing in Germiston court soon. Police are still looking for the other two.

A complainant was on duty as teller when she was approached by a white female who wanted to pay for her items; she then produced a Foschini card and the ID document of Botha Magdelana. On scanning the card she noticed the information on card and on system is not the same. The

complainant phoned the customer who advised her that she was in possession of her card and was not at Bedford Centre. The suspect was then detained and police summoned. The said suspect was arrested and charged with fraud and will be appearing in court .Investigations are continuing.

The complainant alleges that she left her home at about 08:45 on 2014/04/07 with her vehicle and when she returned at about 12:20, she entered her garage and noticed that the safe was removed from the wall and her domestic worker didn’t respond when she called to her. She then realised

that something was wrong, when she turned back she was confronted by four armed African males who removed her wedding ring and drove off with her car.Bedfordview SAPS is investigating a case of a house robbery and following all possible links.

The entire Wright family would like to thank tame TIMES for sponsoring our youngest son Alexander to the tune of 5 months school fees. Having twins in Matric this year, the budget was bound to be tight and this generous gesture has certainly eased things quite a bit. Alexander was rather overwhelmed at the birthday function, but after seeing his name and photo in print, he is relishing every moment of his 15 minutes of fame. Our twins were also pupils at Kenton and the family has a long history with the school going back some 25 years. I consider it to be the best school in the area (I am somewhat bi-ased) and Mrs Young , the Principal who joined us at the tame TIMES birthday party is one of the most fantastic people that I know. Thank you tame TIMES, Waltons, all the sponsors and Alexander for arriving early and being the best April Fools joke ever.

Keep the family safe this Easter

Although the Easter period provides families with a much needed break away from school and work, it is statistically the most dangerous time of year to travel on South Africa’s roads, which experience high volumes of vehicles that are often not fit for long journeys, or are being driven by fatigued drivers. The South African division of global powertrain and vehicle safety technology leader Federal-Mogul has put together a number of useful hints and tips for keeping safe on the road this Easter. Federal-Mogul technical adviser, Bertie Steyn, stresses that it is of the utmost importance to complete fundamental vehicle point checks before undertaking a cross-country journey. “Before setting off on holiday, it is essential that checks are carried out on a car’s tyres, brakes, oil, transmission fluid, wiper blades and all lights. Any failure in these areas may have fatal consequences, simply as a result of being overlooked. The most effective way of ensuring peace-of-mind in this regard is to book a vehicle in for a safety inspection at a

specialist centre,” he explains. In tough economic times, going away for a short break can already prove costly, and many motorists may not be able to afford this service. In this case, Steyn reveals that the driver can conduct personal safety inspections from home. “It is important that to ensure that all headlights and indicators are in working order and that the engine has sufficient oil, coolant and brake fluid. Wiper blades must be in good working condition and the washer tank should be filled with an effective cleaning solution. If there is

any damage to shock absorbers or tyres, it is highly recommended that the vehicle is taken to a specialist fitment centre, as this will affect braking and performance.”Although this may seem to be an unforeseen expense, the cost is insignificant compared to the potentially catastrophic results of an accident. Steyn reveals that squeaky or ‘spongy-feeling’ brakes are tell-tale signs that the braking system must be checked. “In this case, it is also advisable to take the vehicle to a specialist who can determine precisely what action should be taken.”April weather can also be unpredictable, and it is important to slow down in rainy conditions, as it takes far longer to stop or adjust on wet roads. Headlights should always be turned on too. Other important aspects to consider during long distance journeys is to always abide by the speed limit, maintain a safe following distance behind other vehicles, and to take regular breaks at designated rest stops located along the national road network.

Bee Gees admirers can relive the ener-getic pop trio from 4 to 26 April 2014 at the Odeon Showbar at Emperors Palace. Local performers: Mark Richardson, Lu-ciano Zuppa and Paul Buckby have col-laborated to replicate the greatest Bee Gees hits for The Bee Gees Tribute Show.Bee Gees brothers Barry, Robin, and Mau-rice Gibb rocked the 1960s and early 1970s, and dominated the disco music era in the late 1970s. They topped the music charts with memorable hits, such as “Stayin’ Alive”, “Night Fever”, and their beautifully harmo-nised ballads “Massachusetts” and “I started a joke”, to name a few.The Bee Gees Tribute Show covers a whole range of their greatest hits from both the ear-lier days, as well as the upbeat and flashy disco era. The intimate showbar ensures that the audience forms part of the interactive show; where the singers frequently dance in between the tables and are not shy to pull you up onto your feet to disco rock with them. Bee Gees fans can look forward to a very colourful, energetic and glittery evening filled with beautiful showgirls and disco balls. A few of the audience favourites so far include: “Tragedy”, “More than a woman”, “How deep

is your love”, “Stayin’ Alive” and “You should be dancing”. The tribute trio accurately imitat-ed the famous high-pitched vibrato lead vo-cals, as well as the three-part tight harmonies and the Barry Gibb’s signature falsetto notes reminiscent of the late 1970s and 1980s. Ac-cording to an article on the Emperors Palace website called “ ‘Night fever’ with the month long Bee Gees Tribute Show”, Paul Buckby said they decided to take on the Bee Gees not as an attempt to replace them, but to cel-ebrate their talent and legacy: “Barry Gibb once said that the Bee Gees would like to be remembered for their music long after they had gone. So we are ot trying to fill the shoes of the Bee Gees; we’re just lifting our hats!”The Bee Gees Tribute Show will run until 26 April at the Odeon Showbar at Emper-ors Palace. Performances take place every Friday and Saturday night at 20:00. Tickets cost R80 per person and can be purchased at the door; Winners Circle members qualify for discounts. We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordi-nary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead. It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Gar-field). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time

with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formi-dable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realise that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp. Release date in SA: 25 April

Michael Schumacher has shown considerable signs of improvement, this was the view of his former track rival Jean Alesi. Schumacher has been in a medically induced coma since 29 December 2013 when he collided with a rock in an unfortunate skiing accident. “During my last visit I noticed something had improved,” Alesi told Speedweek magazine. While the family and friends of the seven-time F1 World Champion are happy over his recovery, Alesi told media that they are aware that the road to total recovery is still a long one.Schumacher’s manager; Sabine Kehm, also added her voice in giving fans hope saying, “Michael is making progress. Boshoff triumphs at SA Boys U-19 Champs

Ekurhuleni’s Paul Boshoff defeated Hennie du Plessis from Limpopo at the last hole of a humdinger 36-hole final to lift the Nomads SA Boys U-19 Match Play Championship title on Saturday 5 April.Throughout a very blustery day at Umhlali Golf Club, the lead changed hands no less than seven times in the ding-dong battle for supremacy. The 17-year-old finalists were still all square at their second visit to the par-three 18th and it looked as if the battle would head to a play-off decider. However, Boshoff’s tee shot stood up to the wind gusting at 30 kilometers an hour off the left, and found the edge of the green, while Du Plessis’s effort splashed in the greenside bunker.

The Limpopo golfer played a terrific trap shot that slipped just six feet past the pin, but Boshoff lagged a lengthy putt to the edge of the cup for a tap-in par. Du Plessis missed his attempt to extend the match, and the victory went to Boshoff. The country’s number five ranked junior was absolutely thrilled to get the job done.“I am so incredibly proud right now. Considering the past champions, it is a great honour to know my name will join players like Tim Clark, Trevor Immelman, Richard Sterne and Dylan Frittelli on the trophy,” said Boshoff.“I took the lead four times, and Hennie had it three times, so I’d say we were very evenly matched. Neither of us ran away with it, though, because we both battled to

keep control in the wind. The locals say that this was just about as bad as the wind gets around here. Club selection was tough. It was really difficult to get the ball close to the pins, especially on the holes into the wind. Even if you got close, it was pretty tough to putt in the wind. It was a long day and it could have gone either way. I feel for Hennie, because he was a fantastic opponent. I got the ball to the hole at the last and he didn’t. That’s what always makes the difference in matches like these.”The Match Play victory follows a fourth place finish at the recent Sanlam Cape Province Open and the young gun hopes the confidence from this achievement will carry him into the winner’s circle more often this season.

On Sunday 6 April the Harcourts Alan Robb road race, a race named after the legendry multiple comrade marathon winner took place at the

Germiston Stadium. The race took place in perfect conditions and a record field of athletes took part in the 3 events on the day. Thousands of athletes took to the streets of Germiston on the 32km, 15km and 5km races.Harcourts Real Estate group said that they

were delighted to be part such a prestigious event. The race attracts runners and supporters from all over Gauteng and is the perfect opportunity to showcase our brand and our commitment to the event. Many of the athletes that took part were using the event as a prep run for the upcoming Comrades marathon and said that they were impressed by the route and organisation of the event.Les Black from Germiston Callies said the club was really happy with the way the event continues to grow from year to year. With the great running conditions on the day and

the relativity flat course the 32km and 15km events saw really fast times not only from winners of the different events but also from so many of the other runners all saying they had recorded their personal best time for the distances.Harcourts and Callies were delighted to hand over a cheque of R7200 to a local charity which was the money raised from the entry fees of the 5km fun run.

Thank Germiston Callies as well as all the athletes that took part and that Harcourts Real Estate is already looking forward to the 2015 event.

Harcourts Alan Robb race a huge successCitizen Journalist: Simon Smith writes

OFF THE PITCH

It is that time of the year again, when we are entertained with the Indian T20 Premier League, which involves all of the big hitting batsmen in the game from around the world. I say big hitting batsmen, as this is what has made this tournament the success it is. The tournament will start in Dubai

tomorrow and end in India on the 1st of June due to the elections in India. Since it’s inception in 2008, it must be said that the batsmen have far out weighed the bowlers, in terms of results. The hitting of boundaries wether they are four’s or sixes is what has brought the Iikes of the Chennai Super Kings and KKR in the past as the the eventual winners. The IPL is pretty much a hit and a miss if you are a bowler, as you need the luck that goes with this format in hoping that the batsmen miss hit a few. The ICC sanctioned festival of cricket brings together the best of the best when the teams try and set the highest run rates possible. The Overseas players that represent the individual franchises play a huge and responsible role when it comes to the bragging rights in India with the locals. The Chennai Super Kings are two time winners of this title, with Indian skipper MS Dhoni, Dwayne Bravo, Brendon McCullum and our own FAF DuPlessis, would seem to have the balance and experience to win a third title. However, there are a couple of other teams that will surely come close. Gary Kirsten is the new Delhi Daredevils coach and has the services of Quinton De Kock, JP Duminy and Kevin Pietersen who will hopefully challenge Dhoni and co. Other contenders for the title should come from Mumbai Indians who have ‘Mr Cricket’ in Michael Hussey, Rohit Sharma and Lasith Malinga, as well as the Royal Challengers Bangalore boasting the brilliant Virat Kohli, AB De Villiers and Chris Gayle. It should be a fantastic spectacle of cricket in it’s own right. My bet is that Dhoni and his Super Kings will grab a third title.
