The future of football, for both boys and girls, at St Bede’s is extremely positive and exciting. It was an honour and a privilege to attend our annual Bedian alumni reunion in London last Friday, and to be able to catch up with a wide range of alumni of all ages and backgrounds. I would warmly invite as many of you as possible to attend our “Development and Fundraising Information Evening” which will take place on Wednesday 20th November 2019 from 7 - 8pm in the Academic Hall. The event is an opportunity to share the College’s exciting future plans for the development of its site and infrastructure, as well as for widening access to a Bedian education through the growth of our Bursary Fund. Our Autumn Music Concert on Tuesday evening was an absolute triumph and I was incredibly proud of all of those who took part, as well as my colleagues who were involved in the preparation for and running of the event. On Wednesday I attended the funeral of Mr John Moynihan, who taught at the College from 1966-2004, and held a number of key responsibilities including Head of Sixth Form and Acting Chair of Governors. I was fortunate enough to spend some invaluable hours with Mr Moynihan in early September and to be able to listen intently to, and learn from, the recent history of the College. Mr Moynihan will always be remembered fondly by those who knew him and played a huge role in making St Bede’s the outstanding school that it is today. It was my pleasure earlier this morning to host our first breakfast meet and greet with the College’s Senior Leadership team and to be able to discuss a wide range of topics with the parents who were able to attend. The next meet and greet opportunity is Friday 6th December from 3.45 – 4.45pm in the Vaughan Library and I hope that many parents will be able to join us then. As we approach the half term break, which begins after school on Tuesday, I do believe that it has been a tremendously successful start to the academic year here at the College. St Bede’s however is always keen to further improve in every respect and I would like to kindly remind parents that the College utilises a triage system for the handling of concerns and complaints. This system allows concerns and complaints to be engaged with by a range of different members of staff depending upon their seriousness and nature (e.g. pastoral, academic, sport, cuisine, etc.), the most frequent starting point for this process being our Form Tutors. I am afraid that a number of parents have recently raised concerns with me that the playground is regrettably being frequently used as a forum to publically raise concerns about the College. Our playground is clearly not an appropriate environment for this to happen and I would politely request that concerns are raised with members of staff in the first instance, using appropriate communication channels and in accordance with our published procedure. The College is wholeheartedly committed to continuously improving all areas of its provision, myself included. I look forward to writing to you again after half term and I would like to wish all of you a relaxing and restorative break. You can learn much more about the life of the College via our website and social media channels and do please sign up to follow the College Twitter accounts and my own (@LouisdArcy1 is my handle) if you can. BEDE’S NEWS18 October 2019

The Headmaster’s Review of the Week

Dear Bedian Family,

As always, it gives me great pleasure to be writing to you at the culmination of an action-packed, purposeful and relentlessly optimistic week here at St Bede’s.

Our theme of the week has been “Perseverance” –the challenge for all of us is to consider the next time we pray to ask God with faith and to persevere, waiting patiently for the outcome. God never fails to help us and he is always full of surprises. As scripture says “Will God not bring about justice for his chosen ones, who persevere in prayer? Will he keep putting them off? He will see they get justice and quickly if he finds faith” (Luke 18: 7-8).

I am extremely proud of our first ever St Bede’s College competitive girls’ football match in the Manchester Schools’ Cup on Tuesday afternoon against William Hulme’s Grammar School – the College was edged out in a keenly fought contest and I am extremely proud of their endeavours. The future of football, for both boys and girls, at St Bede’s is extremely positive and exciting.

It was an honour and a privilege to attend our annual Bedian alumni reunion in London last Friday, and to be able to catch up with a wide range of alumni of all ages and backgrounds. BEDE’S NEWS

QEGS Block FixturesOn a Saturday filled with goals at both Brantingham Road and over in Blackburn St Bede’s and QEGs pupils battled it out on the field. In the U12 game the match ebbed and flowed with the half time score being 1-1 following a superb goal by Rafael. In the second half it was goals galore as it ended 6-3 in QEGS’ favour following two late goals which meant the game looked more one sided than it was with Noah and Ayo getting themselves on the scoresheet for Bede’s.

In the U13 game the 6-3 score line was reversed as we ran out winners. The U13s dominated the game and scored some excellent goals but gave three penalties away which meant the game was much closer than it should have been. Harry C has a sensational game to be named MOM and capped it with a lovely goal. Other goals came from Benat, Harry O, Louis, Tyreek and William.

In the U14 game St Bede’s were dominant winners with the final score being 8-0. Luca was the standout performer showing great intensity on and off the ball and his technical quality oozed out throughout the game. Goals came from Austin (2) James C (2) Luca (2) Callum and Harrison. Over in Blackburn the U15s were also comfortable winners although the game was 0-0 at half time, following some resolute defending from the QEGS rear-guard. The second half would be a different story however as St Bede’s created attacking 2 v 1’s all over the pitch and put together some great team moves to break the QEGS defence down. Goals came from Pat, Micah, Richard, Kareem, Blaine and Uwak with Micah claiming the man of the match award as he was simply unplayable offering great link up play and an outstanding goal.

On the 1st XI pitch a close game ensued with St Bede’s showing some real quality on the ball but conceded some simple goals which allowed the game to end 3-2 in QEGS favour. Goals came via Luigi from the penalty spot and Jay. Theo again put in a tireless performance in midfield and was awarded the man of the match.

Healthy Eating and Making The Right Choices

This week we were delighted to welcome Amy Roberts, Director of Nutrition and Food Development at Holroyd Howe who gave a presentation on Healthy Eating and Making the Right Choices to our pupils.

After the presentation Amy took a number of questions from the audience and her talk had clearly stimulated their interest about balanced diet, portion sizes and the amount of sugar in various products.

The next stop for Amy was the Maher Library where she held discussion groups with pupils from Upper Third to Sixth Form about the Holroyd Howe food provision in the College. Interestingly there were requests for green tea, decaffeinated coffee, a larger range of salads, different breads for the sandwiches and even doner kebabs!

Amy assured them that healthy eating was her priority and she would do all she could and raise most of the requests with her team in the College. However, do not bank on a doner kebab any time soon!

Theme of the Week

Perserverance “Will not God will bring about justice for his chosen ones,

who perservere in prayer? Will he keep putting them off? He will see they get justice and quickly if he finds faith.”

(Luke 18: 7-8)

Challenge: Next time you pray, ask God with faith, persevere and wait patiently

for the outcome. God is awesome and he is full of surprises. Be Surprised!

On Sunday 13th

October Cardinal Henry Newman was made Saint by

Pope Francis the first modern English Saint.

Prayer:

“God has created me to do Him some definite service. He has committed some work to me which

He has not committed to another. I have my mission. I may never know it in this life, but I shall be told it in the next. I am a link in a chain, a bond

of connection between persons.” St John Henry Newman

BEDE’S NEWSManchester CupThe first round of the Manchester Cup paired the U13 against Abraham Moss in a repeat of the first round ESFA Cup game that ended 5-2 to St Bede’s. The boys produced an incredible performance and played some eye catching football. The main difference from the last game was that their end product was outstanding and saw them run up a 5-0 lead at half time. The second half was no different and it was pleasing to see the boys maintain their high standard, on and off the ball, even when having a comfortable lead. William has been outstanding at left back recently and was rewarded with another goal and he claimed the man of the match award. Other goals came from Benat (4), with a clinical performance in front of goal, Harry O (2) and Harry C.

After a gruelling schedule, in which the boys have competed in eight fixtures and travelled to Shrewsbury for the first round of the ISFA cup, a game in which they won 3-2 with two goals in the last four minutes. The boys should be incredibly proud of their achievements having progressed to the next round in all four cups competitions they now look forward to our football tour to Espanyol on Sunday.

Theatre VisitOn the evening of Monday 7 October, Sixth Form Drama and Theatre students went to The Lowry to see a re-imagining of set text Hedda Gabler. They were delighted that this updated version of the play (entitled Hedda Tesman) still informed their understanding of the Ibsen classic and really showed them how effective well-played subtext can invigorate a performance.

Futsal

The Upper Fourth Futsal Competition is approaching the final stages with each team having played two of their three fixtures. Magdalene and Campion have both won a match each with standout performances from Jon and Luca. The leaders at this stage are Bosco who have scored an incredible ten goals in their two wins with Callum scoring four in a 5-1 victory against Campion. Can anyone stop them claiming the title?

Student Council- New All Boy Bede’s Choir Established

Since the creation of the Lower Sixth Student Council this year, there has been a wealth of ideas and objectives implemented in order to enhance College life for students; from volunteering to help out with clubs in the Prep to promoting ways St Bede’s can be more environmentally friendly.

However, I would like to highlight the achievements of a particular member of the Lower Sixth, Nathen H. Nathen has utilised his passion for music in order to participate in and promote the St Bedes’s All Boy Choir. They have amassed 25 members since September, including a lot of boys who play for Manchester City Academy, but they are ready to welcome more. An incentive is the jaffa cakes provide by Mr Davis at the end of rehearsals.

Miss Smith, the Head of Performing Arts said, ‘the choir is progressing successfully and there are more boys than ever participating’. The choir is run by Mr Davies and is presented as an opportunity for boys to sing, who wouldn’t necessarily participate in the usual St Bede’s Choir. They have just completed one rehearsal already, which consisted of singing various songs such as ‘Thinking Out Loud’ by Ed Sheeran. They focus on singing more popular songs instead of choir songs, in order to make the choir more inclusive and attract more member. Furthermore, Mr Davies says the All Boy Choir will be performing at a concert in the near future. We cannot wait to see the choir perform and they will be a great addition to St Bede’s events.

Autumn Concert

On Tuesday evening the Music Department hosted a well-attended concert to showcase the massive breadth of musical talent we have at the College. The evening featured a performance from the Orchestra and both Gospel choir and Chamber choir, to solo instrumental and vocal pieces. The evening was completed in style with a sneak preview of the College production of West Side Story from the lead Characters, Tom and Freya who are playing the roles of Tony and Maria. If the Strictly Come Dancing judge, Craig Revel - Horwood had been there, he may have said it was fab-u-lous!

A wonderful evening was had by all and it was well supported by our parents and friends. The Music Department will be hosting its next Concert on December 10 at 6:30pm, – please come along! (Free entry).

BEDE’S NEWSBoys Become MenSt Bede’s 2 - 0 Canon Slade

A real season defining game for the U15s saw them take on a unbeaten and well drilled Canon Slade side. Bede’s made a quick start to the game creating a couple of chances in the first five minutes with U Charles being played through 1v1 with the keeper to see his effort bounce back off the post. As the half went on Canon Slade grew more and more into game and Bede’s didn’t really kick on from the positive start, but H Robinson was in a very defiant mood and was making sure no one was going to beat him after some smart saves and incredible handling skills the game was level at 0-0 at half time. After some morale boosting words from Mr Brown the boys finally start to play with some belief and compete on every part of the pitch. The talisman P Burke (the famous No 9) with a moment of magic broke the deadlock as the ball bounced out of the box and on the half volley he thumped the ball into the top left corner with serious venom putting Bede’s 1-0 up. Canon Slade started to press more and more and asked more questions of the Bede’s defence, but every time the defence of H Robinson, C Kilroe, G Davies, S Wright, Darius M-A and C Owen answered. Two colossal performances came from two very mature players in P Burke and F Kongolo who were very dogged in defence but very creative in attack. After 20 minutes of tiresome team defending, P Burke broke through on goal with a great solo run and very smart finish at the near post to seal the victory for Bede’s. This puts their name in the hat for round three and they have a home draw against either Sale Grammar or Kingsway. A real gritty and mature performance from the team saw them come out with a deserved victory. The romance of the cup lives to fight another day. MOM - P Burke - Like a man possessed, he was asked to play a different role for the team and adapted superbly and topped off a great individual performance with two stunning goals which the great Stevie G would be proud of.

A memorable team performance and superb effort from every individual including the ever growing injured party who still came to support the team after school hours which is great to see. This led to a very proud coach.

Well done boys and well deserved

Forest Fun

Prep 1 had a fantastic visit to Delamere Forest last week. The weather stayed dry and the children really enjoyed participating in the scientific based activities that link to topics of Seasons, Growth and Senses. They completed tasks where they could focus on their senses, using blindfolds and mirrors in a stunning woodland setting. Also they were able to use a colour chart in the forest setting to find natural objects and match them accurately. Finally, they had the most fun working and playing together using their imaginative and creative skills to build dens and explore the mud kitchen with organic resources. Every child made a clay forest pet that came back to live in their classroom

18 October 2019 PREP SCHOOL

On The BallSt Bede’s Prep Girls’ Football Team played their second round of fixtures in the Manchester League on Wednesday 16 October. They competed in six competitive matches winning two, drawing one and losing three. The girls showed a huge improvement from their first matches at William Hulme and there were some brilliant goals from star performer Olivia in the two wins. There were also some superb displays from Victoria in defence who has shown a huge improvement over the last few weeks! The next round of games will take place in November where they will hopefully pick up some more points!

Responsibility

On Tuesday and Wednesday, Prep 6C and Prep 6H went in the minibus on a trip to the Marist Centre in Chorlton. The theme for the day was ‘Responsibility’. After watching a short video on responsibility and singing a song on being responsible, we were shown a key which was to symbolise the key to open our hearts to become better, more responsible people. We split into small groups and used role play to dramatise scenes showing how we, as Prep 6 pupils, can be responsible members of our school community and society in general. We also made promises to God, ourselves, our classmates and teachers as to how we can be better students and we wrote prayers and songs to highlight these promises. After lunch we worked in our groups to prepare a short service which included hymns, scripture and prayer. One group took part in a dramatization of Jesus handing over the Keys of the Kingdom of Heaven to Peter. The day finished with a video clip from ‘The Lion King’, which clearly highlighted Simba’s responsibility as leader of his pride and his need to commit to protecting his lionesses and fight for his land.Whilst the day was a wonderful opportunity for us to reflect on our responsibilities as pupils at the top of the Prep School, it was also great fun and we all thoroughly enjoyed our day with the Marist sisters. Many thanks to Sister Mary Francis, Sylvia and Mary for a lovely day.

Headteacher’s Award

Congratulations Emily in Prep 2 who has received a Headteacher’s Award. Emily has shown great perseverance and resilience so far this year. No matter how hard the challenge Emily has always been willing to tackle it without any worry. Emily is always kind and considerate to others and her behaviour is fantastic in class and around school.

Pink Day

After an early morning of blowing up balloons and sticking

up decorations, face paint and hairspray, the

common room was transformed into a sea of pink, as the Sixth Form’s annual pink day was upon us once more!

In aid of cancer research, Pink Day aims to raise money and awareness for such an important cause that sadly touches many of our lives. The kind donations from the staff and pupils will help to continue the vital work of this charity and undoubtedly make a huge difference to so many lives.

As always, the entire Sixth Form took it in their stride, with countless impressive outfits, including pink hair tips, sparkly tights and tutus. Though the Sixth Formers stole the show in their pink outfits, the lower school were able to get involved through activities and fundraisers. Highlights included a treasure hunt of pink characters and a break-time sweet sale followed by cakes and donuts at lunch -

the more pink food the better! Hannah and Liv showcased their culinary skills with a fantastic pink cake; can’t wait to see them on the Bake Off in the future...

I’d like to thank everyone who donated and embraced the pink spirit, as well as the Sixth Form Team, as without them none of this would be possible. A special thank you has to go to the charity committee, including Vanessa and Tamara for hand-making the sweet bundles, and Serena, Issy, Letitia and Tico for making the bake sale such a success. And of course, no decorations would be up without Mr Power’s bluetac!

It was great to see the whole sixth form coming together for such a worthy cause - though we do not have a total raised currently, we will be sure to keep you updated. Once again, thank you to everyone who helped make the day such a success - we all had a fantastic time!Jess E - U6
