Here at Bedford College, we believe it’s important for young people and adults in our community to be given opportunities to develop and use their skills and talents. This is why we strive to provide high quality information, advice and guidance about all education and career options, and deliver relevant, high quality tasters and programmes for people to get involved in.

This guide provides you with specific details of the range of free services on offer to young people at school, along with information on other external and internal courses and partnerships. As a College, we have invested heavily in these programmes, and in our facilities too. The services have been designed with the help and input of schools, local authorities, local agencies and young people themselves. I hope you find it helpful.

WELCOMEAt the heart of the local community, we are pleased to offer everyone a varied selection of choices for further study, and the qualifications needed for the world of work or progression to university.

It’s important to give young people plenty of opportunities to gain as much knowledge as possible about how the subjects they are studying in school relate to the careers they will be looking for in the future. This is explored throughout their school lives – giving them the external opportunities to discover further and higher education, academic and vocational pathways as they mature, enables them to choose more effectively.

People today are more likely to have various careers throughout their working lives and may work beyond the present retirement age; therefore they need the help of others in order to make informed decisions and choose the course or qualification that is best for them at that particular point in time.

By working with local schools, agencies, organisations and local authorities in a broader and more integrated way, Bedford College is ‘ahead of the game’. We are constantly looking at ways to improve and expand our provision in order to be ever more inclusive. This guide showcases the extra and free provision on offer across all campuses and in schools and community venues. A NEW VENTURE

Bedford College is now working with Central Bedfordshire University Technical College (UTC) in Houghton Regis to help the UTC improve the quality of provision offered and number of pupils recruited. Having been graded Outstanding by Ofsted for our 14-16 work for the second consecutive inspection and as project managers for the Bedford Free School, which achieved its target recruitment of 400 within two years, we have a strong track record to work with the UTC. The UTC provides young people with an employer-led curriculum built around the specialisms of Engineering and Design. “We at Bedford College have a history of Engineering education excellence, we are committed to technology training and are looking forward to helping the UTC improve as quickly as possible for the benefit of its pupils,” said Ian Pryce.

BRINGING TRAINING CLOSER TO YOU

The Bedford College Learning Centres can be found in Bedford, Luton, Milton Keynes and Rushden. They are professional, adult learning environments that offer top-class computer training, as well as courses to develop social and life skills. Open Monday to Saturday, students have full use of our fantastic facilities and support from one of our dedicated tutors when needed. Courses start from as little as £20 and are free for those who are unemployed and actively seeking work. New for 2014, the Luton, Rushden and MIlton Keynes Learning Centres are now offering Teaching Assistant courses – see page 8 for more information.

GET INVOLVED – HOW IT WORKSMoving on from something familiar to something completely new can be a very exciting prospect, but it can also be a rather daunting one. Here’s how we can make it easier…

HERE’S WHAT HAPPENS

The school decides that the theme for the term will be ‘Protecting Our Planet’. Contact is made with the Schools & Community Liaison Manager to discuss what can be offered, when and where.

The Schools & Community Liaison Manager, along with a subject specialist and a Student Ambassador, visit the school to deliver an assembly for the designated year group.

Three visits – one per class – are made to Bedford College for a two hour session. This includes interactive group activities and mini competitions.

A follow-up visit may be organised where the Schools & Community Liason Manager returns to the school and plans are made for future visits on different themes.

Everyone benefits from working more collaboratively and learning from each other. Bedford College’s Student Ambassadors are an excellent example. They take part in additional activities alongside their main qualification, which helps them to enhance their employability and personal skills. Meanwhile, your students benefit from friendly and engaging peer role models and mentors introducing them to the world of further education and careers, through activities such as those outlined below.

These are interactive workshop sessions giving a real flavour of the curriculum of a particular course and at a specific level linked to future careers. Activities will vary depending on the subject and location chosen, but the sessions may involve…

• Coming into Bedford College and having a tour of the facilities.

• Taking a proactive part in a range of informative and interactive activities.

• Attending presentations from members of the Careers and Apprenticeships teams.

• Infilling into lessons and talking to current students and staff across all centres.

• Discovering how the subjects studied

in school relate to academic and vocational courses and future careers. For instance, how qualifications in Physics and Maths can lead to a course or career in Aeronautical Engineering.

OR• Bedford College students and staff can

attend schools and community venues to deliver presentations/workshops/assemblies/demonstrations/tasters/performances.

OR• Before school, during lunchtime and

after school, we can deliver 30 minute ‘drop in’ sessions. These are one-to-one or small group sessions giving impartial advice, information and guidance.

The school wants an assembly/presentation on ‘Careers and the World of Work’. Contact is made with the Schools & Community Liaison Manager to discuss what can be offered, when and where.

The Schools & Community Liaison Manager agrees the date,time and duration with the school.

Student Ambassadors and subject staff, or the Schools & Community Liaison Manager, deliver an assembly or presentation.

A follow up workshop with targeted pupils may be arranged for delivery either at the school or at a Bedford College campus.

An individual student experience and attendance at an Open Day are also suggested.

The Schools & Community Liaison Manager, Student Ambassadors and colleagues also regularly attend Options Evenings and Careers’ Fairs. These offer support for parents/carers/young people/school staff with impartial information, advice and guidance related to transitions and progression.

Individual Student Experiences – 11+ yearsMorning session: 9.30am-12.30pm ORAfternoon session: 1.00pm-3.00pm

These sessions allow students to participate in a lesson within the subject area they are interested in, supported by one of our current students as a ‘buddy’. They are designed to ensure students are making the right choices about what they would like to study.

Students will need to be able to make their own way to and from the relevant Bedford College campus and schools must be informed of the agreed date and their subsequent absence.

Nursery and Primary Co-curriculum – 2-11 yearsMorning session: 9.30am-12.30pm ORAfternoon session: 1.00pm-3.00pm

It is never too early to engage and challenge children, encouraging them to explore and expand their knowledge and ‘horizons’. Bedford College staff and IT Peer Mentors currently work with nursery and primary aged children in many different ways and are open to offering more, so don’t hesitate to contact us.


TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES FOR TEACHING STAFFBedford College offers a range of Teacher Education & Training at various levels; from Introduction to the Role of a Teaching Assistant to a Foundation Degree in Educational Practice validated by the University of Bedfordshire.

Mentoring in Education Level 5 Certificate

This one year course is intended for Mentors within the Education sector. It is delivered through blended learning with a mixture of taught sessions and activities and tutorials online. The course will allow you to explore and reflect on the theory around your mentoring role in order to develop your own practice.

If you’re passionate about supporting children in an educational environment then you’ll be interested in our Teaching Assistant courses offered at Bedford College’s Luton, Rushden and Milton Keynes Learning Centres, delivered over 10 weeks.

If you volunteer or are employed as a Teaching Assistant, we offer the Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools CACHE Level 2 Award and Certificate delivered either in the workplace or at our Learning Centres.

Prices start from £350, which can be paid by direct debit in instalments (a £20 fee applies if you choose to pay by instalments).

If you are already working as an experienced teaching assistant in a school and want a Level 3 qualification to show this, our Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools CACHE Level 3 Certificate is ideal. This course will develop your confidence, practice and understanding to support your work in schools. It is delivered and assessed in the workplace over eight months.

Move on without moving away Do you want to gain a degree but feel the fees are too high, or you would rather study and be able to stay living at home? Higher education is not only restricted to universities, Bedford College and Shuttleworth College offer a range of university courses that lead to a full degree. Our HND (Higher National Diplomas) and Foundation Degrees are two year courses, which lead to a qualification that is widely accepted by employers and you can then apply to many universities to top-up for a final year and gain a full degree.

24+Study now, pay later! A number of our Teacher Education & Training courses can be studied with a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan, which means you could be eligible to take out a low interest loan to cover all or part of the course fees. The Advanced Learning Loan is available to students aged 24 and over; it isn’t dependent on your income and doesn’t require credit checks. It means you won’t have to pay for your course upfront and won’t start making repayments until you’re earning over £21,000 per year. Applications need to be made through Student Finance England.

FOUNDATION BUREAUStudents on Bedford College’s Foundation Skills programme now have the opportunity to take part in work-related enrichment, alongside their main course of study. We offer a range of administrative services, including a personal service where we can shred confidential documents for a small fee. All shredding is then bagged and put on sale as animal bedding, or as an additive for compost.

Students run the bureau as a professional office, acquiring key employability skills, such as: organisation, communication and time keeping. Any money raised goes back into the department to help pay for activities throughout the year.

Apprenticeships

Bedford College has a dedicated team of Apprenticeship advisers who are keen to support your school in providing Apprenticeship information to pupils. We can offer a variety of options to suit your requirements, which include:

• An information stand where pupils are free to ask questions and take away information at careers events.

• Presentations to explain: - what an Apprenticeship is - details of Apprenticeships offered - details of qualifications within the Apprenticeship framework

- entry requirements - next steps and how to apply.

These can be for any audience and any number of people.

• A brief summary of what an Apprenticeship is and how to apply. This can be applied to a large audience, for example, at an assembly.

• Workshops for pupils and parents explaining what Apprenticeships are and how to apply – group size of up to 15.

• Workshops for pupils - “How to engage with employers” (this does not cover CV preparation, personal statements or interview technique). It is totally unique, as it explains how to make contact with employers and proactively seek vacancies, which could lead to an Apprenticeship. Group size of up to 20.

A combination of several of the above can be delivered to meet the needs of the school and pupils. Many schools like to start with a brief generic presentation explaining what an Apprenticeship is, followed up by a more detailed session for individuals who have expressed interest in an Apprenticeship.

Traineeships

Traineeships are designed to help those aged 16-25 prepare for life in employment. In today’s environment it can be extremely difficult to find a job, with employers frequently reporting that those applying for their vacancies don’t have the skills or experience needed to begin work. That’s why Traineeships have been developed to bridge the gap between education and starting a career through work preparation training. A Traineeship combines study and a work placement to develop a range of skills needed for work. Certain criteria apply – contact us for more information.

Work Experience

As a local employer, Bedford College offers varied work experience placements to those aged 14 years and above. Work experience is highly valued by all employers, as it helps individuals to gain essential knowledge of the workplace. A work placement at Bedford College enables the ‘temporary employee’ to experience the day-to-day running of a large organisation.

Student Services and additional support

Our Student Services and Additional Support teams offer advice and support in everything from future careers to personal well-being. Through our dedicated personal tutors, safeguarding team, counsellors and staff who provide specialist support for individual learning needs, we can also offer transitional support to new students coming into College and would welcome any contact from school staff who are interested in this for their own students.

The Job Shop at Bedford College is a new service dedicated to supporting students in improving their job search abilities. It also ensures local employers are aware of the wide range of skills that our students are able to demonstrate from their learning experience and transfer to the work place.

As an employer, when you next find yourself searching for ideal candidates to apply for a vacancy, we will be able to help. Our skilled members of staff look at your job role, decide the type of candidate it would best suit and then promote the vacancy across the College and its affiliated businesses.

This annual event is a fantastic opportunity for school students to enjoy a day of crafts and games, all with a sustainability theme.
