The Friends of the Bedford Free Library produced this newsletter Spring 2016 From the Desk of the Director Grateful for the rather mild winter, we are enjoying spring and actively planning for the summer! There will be plenty of activities happening at the Library and this year, as part of their 100th birthday celebration, the Bedford Historical Society is joining in on our summer fun with their “Hunt for History” program in June. They will be with us at our Summer Kickoff themed “On Your Mark, Get Set, Read!” on June 8th to tell you all about it. Information will also be available at the Library. Happy Birthday Bedford Historical Society! We are very excited to have been awarded a Westchester Library System STEM Learning Library grant. The objective of the grant is to foster STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) learning in libraries. The program that we have chosen is a four-day workshop for Lego Movie Making. The workshop, offered to children ages 6-9, will meet 90 minutes a day inside a special technology truck that will be parked at the Library. This mobile classroom is loaded (see photo below) with all the tech children will need to create their own movie. The workshop will conclude with a screening of all the movies inside the Library and a sharing of experiences. We might even show the real Lego movie for fun! Space is limited to 10 participants and registration will begin on April 18th at 10:00am. The workshop dates are June 27th-30th and you must be able to commit to the entire session. We think this is a wonderful opportunity for children to engage in tech- nology. This spring we will be offering a Mah Jongg class for adults. Similar to the Western card game rummy , Mah Jongg is a game of skill , strategy, and calculation and involves a degree of chance. It’s a brand new program and we think it sounds like a lot of fun! The class will be a 6-week beginner class (details inside). Registration is open and the class is limited to 12. We continue to have Coffee, Coloring and Conversa- tion on Fridays from 10-12. Come and try out the coloring craze with your own coloring book or use one of our beautifully designed books. We’ve also made assorted note cards to color and several patrons have colored Valentine’s Day cards, St. Patrick’s Day and Easter cards. I know my husband was pretty im- pressed with the Valentine card I colored for him! If you are not available on Fridays, we do have coloring books and pencils available in the reading room for those that want to relax and color for a few minutes on their own. We are always looking for new ways to make your life easier. With that in mind we are now a pick up loca- tion for Field Goods. This wonderful company delivers locally grown produce to the Library each week for patrons that sign up for the service. You can choose from four different size shares and additional items such as pasta and cheese are available as extras. The produce bags are delivered on Tuesdays at 3:30pm and include some great cooking tips and recipes. To find out more about this service stop by the adult desk or visit their website @ www.field-goods.com . Choose Bedford as your pick up location. Children’s Room

Did You Know? Here in the Children’s Room we have an enjoyable collec-tion of children’s kits, each of which has a book along with a CD stored together in a green bag. Some titles just seem ideally suited for listening along with the book. For that reason we recommend Books-with-CD-Kits. Some include poetry collections on CD, so the listener may hear the poems as well as see how they are arranged on a printed page. We also have some Books-with-CD-Kits which are about different types of music, as well as a vari-ety of composers and musicians. For example, while you read Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, you are listening to it as well. Some of the titles in the collection are listed below.

Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue with text by Anna Harwell Celenza

A Child’s Introduction to Poetry by Michael Driscoll

Hip Hop Speaks to Children: A Celebration of Poetry With A Beat edited by Nikki Giovanni

I Have a Dream by Martin Luther King, Jr. which has the text and the original recording from the March on Washington delivered August 28, 1963. The picture book accompanying it is illustrated by Kadir Nelson.

Can You Hear It? by William Lach introduces children to beloved music through great works of art from the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Page 2 Bedford Free Library Newsletter/Spring 2016

The Blues of Flats Brown with text by Walter Dean Myers

Poetry Speaks to Children the poems on the CD are read by the poets themselves.

The Carnival of Animals with new verse by Jack Prelutsky. We hope you enjoy some of our other titles in the Book-with-CD- Kit collection, including well-known characters such as Curious George, Skippyjon Jones, Horton the Elephant, Robin Hood, and Peter Rabbit.

Track Reading Year Round We will be offering Wandoo for children to track their reading year round. It is similar to Goodreads but for children. It keeps a list of everything that is read along with a photo of the cover. This can be printed out to share with teachers etc. Going forward our previous Summer Reader program will not be available. We are very excited about this user friendly and interactive program. Registration will be available shortly.

Important Reminder Please let us know if a DVD or CD is not working correctly. We circulate many DVDs and many Books-on-CD in our Library. We hope that people try to be as careful with these as possible, but we know damage happens. It would be tremendously helpful if you let us know if something is not working. Please bring it to our attention with a note or by telling us in person, so we can check to see if cleaning fixes the problem. If not, we can decide to replace the CD or the DVD.

-Shodie Alcorn, Children’s Room

ADULT DESK-HOW TO TIPS

SUSPENDING HOLDS Going on vacation? You are waiting for a popular book and it arrives while you’re out of town – don’t let this hap-pen to you! Suspending your holds ensures that they won’t be filled while you’re away (and miss picking up your book/movie on time) while maintaining the same place in the queue. You can suspend your holds by going to our website www.bedfordfreelibrary.org, clicking on “Check Account” which takes you to the Westchester Library System website (www.westchesterlibraries.org if you prefer to go straight there). Click on “My Account,” enter your library card number and pin (usually the last 4 digits of your phone number), then click “holds” and go from there. Although it might sound complicated it’s actually quite easy. Of course, you may call us and we’ll be happy to do it for you!

CHARGE HISTORY To keep a history of all material you’ve borrowed, follow the same directions as above to log into your account. Click on “Personal Information”, then “Preferences.” Check the boxes “Record My Checkout History” and “Show my Checkout History,” and UPDATE. For privacy reasons we do not automatically keep a history and library users must opt-in.

From the Young Adult Desk

Middle school girls get very excited about crafts. They love to make and create. There is a thriving group of kids that meet regularly at the Library to knit under the tutelage of Margaret Scott. This past summer there was a long waiting list for a sewing class at the Library. With this idea in mind, Christa Ramage, a Library volunteer and mother of middle school girls, imagined a wonderful way to channel this creative energy in a posi-tive way by inviting kids to the Library to design and produce craft pro-jects for community charities. Hence, “Crafts for a Cause” was born at the Bedford Free Library!

After connecting with some local charities, Christa presented the plan of making centerpieces and party favors for the Pound Ridge “Neighbor to Neighbor” Senior Luncheon. The event would take place on March 17th so the theme was St. Patrick’s Day. Initially, 12 middle school girls met at the Library to brainstorm and discuss different ideas for the tables. Christa’s philosophy is that girls are happiest and most productive when the ideas are their own. The girls came with lots of imaginative ideas gathered from Pinterest and other internet sites. They bubbled with enthusiasm and left with a creative plan. Over the next few weeks they collected supplies to make 18 centerpieces: pipe cleaners, shamrocks, gold foil candy and more. Traditionally the seniors love to take favors from the party home to their grandchildren, so some girls designed and assembled Leprechaun themed bags of candy labeled “rainbow seeds” made from Skittles, “pot of gold” made from gold wrapped Hershey’s Kisses and “leprechaun poop” made from yellow and green jelly beans. Other girls made shamrock shaped rice crispy treats and adorable individual shamrock pins of green felt and glitter.

“Crafts for a Cause” met three different times, and the girls were always extremely cheerful and hard working. The Pound Ridge group “Neighbor to Neighbor” was thrilled with the St. Patrick’s Day arrangements and favors. The pilot venture for “Crafts for a Cause” was so successful that there are already plans in the works to create a Mother’s Day themed craft for the Community Center of Northern Westchester. During the month of April the girls volunteered to as-semble stemmed “tea bag roses” constructed of colorful paper wrapped tea bags and pipe cleaners as gifts that the children who visit the Community Center can give to their mothers. This program appears to be the perfect marriage between middle school girls’ enthusiasm for craft projects and community service. “Crafts for a Cause” seems like the beginning of a very good thing at the Library.

Friends of the Bedford Free Library

OPEN HOUSE BOOK BASEMENT DAY

Saturday, April 9

10:00am - 1:00pm

Bring your own bag or box and help yourself to any book, DVD or

CD that we have in storage. All free!!!

This spring the Friends organization will begin the process of reevaluating its objectives and will therefore not be holding its book drop off day. Unfortunately, we are struggling for volunteers while, at the same time, struggling with the question of what to do with the hundreds of books we keep in the basement that don’t sell. We are finding we don’t have the manpower to deal with collecting books anymore. Instead will be offering a free open Book Basement day on April 9

th (see below for details).

The good news is we have been selling consistently well with our Big Red Book Cart in front of the Library. In the near future we are going to fo-cus on stocking it with the best books we have to offer. Please look for our Red Book Cart sale (plus a few tables) during the Bedford Village Sidewalk Sales, June 10-11. In the meantime, we would be very grateful if you would consider donating some of your newest, best and resaleable books for us to stock our cart. A small bag of your most exciting books would be welcomed with open arms. Please call and let us know when you will be dropping off. That is how we will handle donations in the near future.

For those of you with large collections of books to donate, please call us at the Library and we will be happy to advise you of how and where to donate that kind of collection.

Happy Spring!
