Bedrock Public Library Presents: S S p p a a c c e e N N i i g g h h t t An evening of astronomy and space exploration. For young patrons Gr. 6-8 (10-13 years) | Children's Imaginarium Room Saturday October 9, 2013 | 5-7pm The theme for this year is: The Solar System The solar system is our cozy galatic neighborhood powered by our beloved start, the Sun. Thanks to scientific advances in space exploration and observation, we now know so much more than back in earlier times when telescopes did not exist or even not so long ago when Pluto was demoted as a planet. Today we know the solar system is full on fascinating celestial bodies and objects that include new types of planets, meteorites, coments, asteroids, and more. The solar system formed 4.6 billion years ago from the gravitational collapse of a giant molecular cloud. Since then, the solar system is in constant motion and continues to surprise us with all its wonders. We have prepared a special program full of discovery, fun activities, and adventure: Special Visit from NASA Ambassador Pamela Greyer (@TheNASALady) Multimedia Activities | Voyager Scavenger Hunt | Telescope Observation @ the Terrace For info and activities about this program visit: www.bedrockpublib.org/kids/spacenight Bedrock Public Library 1302 Cobblestone Lane Bedrock, IL, 40596 (678) 569-3165 www.bedrockpublib.org

The theme for this year is: The Solar System

The solar system is our cozy galatic neighborhood powered by our beloved start, the Sun.

Thanks to scientific advances in space exploration and observation, we now know so much more

than back in earlier times when telescopes did not exist or even not so long ago when Pluto was

demoted as a planet. Today we know the solar system is full on fascinating celestial bodies and

objects that include new types of planets, meteorites, coments, asteroids, and more.

The solar system formed 4.6 billion years ago from the gravitational collapse of a

giant molecular cloud. Since then, the solar system is in constant motion

and continues to surprise us with all its wonders.

We have prepared a special program full of discovery, fun activities, and adventure:

Special Visit from NASA Ambassador Pamela Greyer (@TheNASALady)

Multimedia Activities | Voyager Scavenger Hunt | Telescope Observation @ the Terrace

Bibliography

Tourville, Amanda Doering. Exploring the solar system. Rourke Publishing, 2010.

A great introduction to space exploration with vivid photographs, graphics, and engaging

text. This book offers information about the sun, the planets and their moons, and more.

You will learn about how physics, math, and science work together to help us understand

our solar system and beyond.

Aguilar, David A. 13 Planets: The Latest View of the Solar System. National

Geographic, 2011. If you want the latest scoop about the planets in our solar system,

this is the book for you. Find out about recently added objects like Ceres, Eris, Haumea

and MakeMake. The National Geographic and David Aguilar of the Harvard Smithsonian

Astronomical Observatory update us about our solar systems with fantastic illustrations

and include astronomy fun activities.

Benson, Michael. Beyond: A Solar System Voyage. Harry N. Abrams. 2009.

This is a beautiful examination of our Solar System from the perspectives space probes

launched in the last 60 years. Stunning photographs that provide readers a real sense of

what our celestial bodies look like. Lots of interesting facts about the different objects and

astronomy, as well as what the images reveal about our nearest neighbors in space.

Carson, Mary Kay. Exploring the Solar System: A History with 22 Activities.

Chicago Review Press, 2008. Winner of the 2009 American Institute of Aeronautics

and Astronautics (AIAA) Children’s Literature Award. This interactive and engaging

book features biographies of space pioneers, a field guide to the solar system, historic

exploratory missions, and more. The hands-on activity projects are stimulating and fun

and for future explorers.

Two great series to add to your reading list include:

Exploring Our Solar System Series by

Crabtree Publishing Company, 2008.

Includes relevant titles by David Jefferis.

Seven Wonders Series by Twenty First

Century Books, 2011.

Includes relevant titles by Ron Miller

and Rosanna Hansen.
