BEETHOVEN Piano Concerto No 1 R STRAUSS Metamorphosen BEETHOVEN Piano Concerto No 4
Being both a pianist and composer, Beethoven had
a special affinity for the piano concerto. The Piano
Concerto No 1, which glistens in the bright key
of C major, is a work of immediate charm and
winning appeal. Beethoven himself took the solo
part when the concerto was first performed in 1795.
Beethoven likewise gave the première of the Piano
Concerto No 4, in many ways the most beautiful
of all of his concertos. From its miraculous opening
to its scintillating conclusion, it offers surprises and
delights at every turn.
Written in the closing months of World War II,
Richard Strauss’s Metamorphosen for 23 solo strings
is an elegy to a culture in ruins. It is the elderly
composer’s most haunting and heartfelt work.

R STRAUSS Suite in B flat, Op 4 BEETHOVEN Piano Concerto No 2 BEETHOVEN Piano Concerto No 3
The earliest of Beethoven’s five concertos in order of composition, the Piano Concerto No 2 brims with Mozartian elegance and grace, while the Piano Concerto No 3, written nearly ten years later, offers a glimpse of Beethoven-as-revolutionary. Beethoven’s only minor-key piano concerto, the Piano Concerto No 3 teems with furious energy and fiery temperament. Its brilliant qualities have long made it a favourite with audiences.
Wunderkind Richard Strauss wrote the Suite in B flat for woodwinds at the age of only twenty. Fresh and vital, it i s the work of a young composer on the cusp of a brilliant career.

It’s no surprise that Beethoven’s Piano Concerto
No 5, Emperor, was voted Australia’s No 1
concerto by listeners of ABC Classic FM. From the
cascading piano flourishes at the start through a
slow movement of ethereal beauty to a rollicking
finale, the Emperor stakes its claim as the king of concertos.
Also on the program are two works by Richard Strauss
– the music for Molière’s stylish comedy, Le bourgeois
gentilhomme, and the youthful Serenade in E flat for winds.
