Everyone in Erie should have the opportunity to hear the works of Beethoven live. With this vision statement, the Erie Philharmonic is proud to continue our Beethoven 4/4 Festival. This four-year initiative, leading up to the composer’s 250th birthday in 2020, will feature free performances, masterworks, world-renowned soloists, outreach events and more. Woven into the fabric of each season, this festival puts the Philharmonic front and center, presenting once-in-a-lifetime concerts and events for audiences of all ages from the Erie region.

We are proud to be partnering with Mazza Vineyards and Five & 20 Spirits & Brewing for our Beethoven 4/4 Festival. Each year we feature one signature drink in celebration of Beethoven’s journey from young composer to larger-than-life icon. The second year of our Beethoven 4/4 Festival will feature a commemorative genever. Genever is a traditional spirit produced in Holland and the surrounding areas since the 16th century. This is the older and more complex precursor to Dutch gin. Rich, sweet flavors come from the malt-based spirit, produced in the old style, with accents from the juniper and herbs.

Welcome to the 2017–18 Season! It is always a personal thrill to develop the menu that becomes a newseason with the Erie Philharmonic, and I must say that I am particularly excited about the music and artists we will be able to share with you on the Warner Theatre stage this season. Whether you subscribe to the Symphonic Series, the Pops, or (like many of our fans) enjoy the full ten-concert series at the Warner, we consider each concert an adventure in listening, and we strive to make each musical experience unique and deeply satisfying. In our Symphonic series, we will present some of the most scintillating music ever written for orchestra, including Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé, and Strauss’ Also Sprach Zarathustra. We continue into our Beethoven 4/4 series and look closely at the concertos of the great composer, inviting pianist Alec Chien to perform Beethoven’s Fourth Concerto and the Choral Fantasy as well as a rising-star trio of Elena Urioste, Nicholas Canellakis, and Michael Brown to perform Beethoven’s Triple Concerto. I am also particularly proud of the fact that two world-renowned soloists, guitarist Sharon Isbin and pianist Simone Dinnerstein, will be collaborating with the Erie Philharmonic next season. Isbin has chosen one of the quintessential masterpieces for guitar by Rodrigo, while Dinnerstein personally chose the Erie Philharmonic to present a brand new piano concerto written for her by American musical legend, Philip Glass. For the Pops, we’ll start with Broadway star Lisa Vroman singing iconic songs, and we will close the season with movie and television themes of your favorite fantasy hits including Harry Potter and Game of Thrones. In February, be sure to not miss Bugs Bunny at the Symphony II. Your whole family will enjoy watching these classic cartoons as the Philharmonic plays the score live in synchronization with the action. Our traditional holiday concerts in December are always a delight, and Chris Brubeck, son of the late, great Dave Brubeck, plays a night of jazz standards in October. The 17-18 season will prove to be a historic one for the Philharmonic in so many ways, and we are grateful that you will be a part of the adventure and excitement. Thank you for making the Erie Philharmonic important to you, your family, and our community. I’m looking forward to seeing you at the Warner Theatre soon!

Beethoven’s Triple Saturday, October 7, 2017 at 8pm Warner Theatre Daniel Meyer conductor Elena Urioste violin Nicholas Canellakis cello Michael Brown piano

Three brilliant B’s! Samuel Barber’s Overture from The School for Scandal is inspired by the witty banter and chatter of Sheridan’s play. It soars with remarkable melodies and fanciful flights of musical whimsy. Beethoven’s Triple Concerto is a compositional tour de force, deftly integrating the sound of three solo instruments into a concerto perfectly suited to an opening night celebration. Erie favorite violinist Elena Urioste returns with two of her favorite collaborative partners, pianist Michael Brown and cellist Nicholas Canellakis. The concert closes with Brahms’ First Symphony, a brilliant combination of technical mastery coupled with depth of thought and emotion in one triumphant symphony. 1

Zarathustra Speaks Saturday, November 4, 2017 at 8pm Warner Theatre

Daniel Meyer conductorNarek Hakhnazaryan cello

Pärt FratresShostakovich Cello Concerto No. 1R. Strauss Also sprach Zarathustra

An evening of musical drama opens with Estonian Arvo Pärt’s Fratres. Set for strings, claves, and a single bass drum, Fratres emerges as a striking example of how rich and spiritual music can evolve out of humble ingredients. Cellist Narek Hakhnazaryan, a Tchaikovsky Competition winner, makes his Erie Philharmonic debut with Shostakovich’s searing Cello Concerto No. 1. The concert closes with Strauss’ Also sprach Zarathustra. With a rumble of an organ and a triumphant blast of the brass, this famous tone poem will be instantly recognized, most notably from Stanley Kubrick’s iconic film, 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The Brilliance of Beethoven Saturday, March 10, 2018 at 8pm Warner Theatre

Daniel Meyer conductorAlec Chien pianoErie Philharmonic Chorus Thomas Brooks directorAllegheny College Choir Dr. James D. Niblock director

This concert will take you through two brilliant contributions to the piano literature from Beethoven: Concerto No. 4 and the Choral Fantasy. Beloved local piano virtuoso Alec Chien takes the solo spotlight in both works. The Fourth Concerto marks the heroic nature of his style, perfectly contrasting an introspective and expressive voice. The Choral Fantasy features a full chorus and six soloists along with solo piano and foreshadows the transformational 9th Symphony. Between these two works, we will perform Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms with rich melodies and catchy rhythms, all in the service of the evocative prayer-poetry of King David from the Book of Psalms.

EACH

“I began to notice the teachers altering the way they teach lessons. Teachers are including rhythm into counting and math activities. Children sing during transitions. The music center and instruments are a favorite place to be. One teacher began using music to capture children’s feel-ings and added painting. This program means more than just teaching children - it is giving them opportunities that they would not have had.” - Jill Varner, Assistant Director, St. Benedict Center, on our Long-Term Residency
