Ladies and gentlemen, please allow us to introduce you to … The Belfountain Badgers! Yes, after more than 35 different entries were submitted by the students of Belfountain. Each entry also included a reason why the student thought their entry should be the new mascot, and students even included a possible logo to go with their entry. Our Mascot Committee then had the difficult task of choosing the 4 finalists for the students to vote upon. The four finalists were: Badgers, Blue Jays, Mountaineers, and Salamanders. Every student, from kindergarten to grade 6, and all staff had the opportunity to vote on their favourite choice of the four finalists. When all the votes were tabulated, the Belfountain Badgers emerged as the new mascot for the school! We are now in the process of ordering new school team jerseys and shorts, and other sportswear such as t-shirts for the students to wear proudly. Our new logo has been designed. It features three colours: Blue (for the sky and water), green (for grass and trees), and white (for clouds and snow). The school sports uniforms will also feature these three colours. chosen all of them! They were so good!
BUSY MONTH OF FEBRUARY AT BELFOUNTAIN!
Dance-a-thon, Skating, Winter Play Day, Underground Railroad
Many thanks to our Belfountain School Council for all their efforts on our “Belfountain Get Active Dance-a-
thon.” The event was a fun-filled fundraiser where children could spend some time dancing to some great
music by our too-hip DJ’s (Toby Schertzer, and Nick McGibbon). Thanks to our School Council team, lead by
Monica Kerr-Coster and Lisa McGibbon for decorating the gym so wonderfully to fit the
sports theme from team pennants, banners, posters, a sports photo cut-out booth … even
a giant scoreboard! Thank you also to Rachel Scholtz, Gail Winters, Annette Morton,
Sheena Smith and Jen Schill, who helped out with the refreshments for the students, and
even demonstrated some impressive dance moves! A dancin’-good time was had by all.
Thanks to everyone for your support of the school through this fundraiser. Close to
$2,500.00 was raised during the dance-a-thon, which will be put toward the installation
of the new basketball nets and backboards in the school gymnasium.
Our first Belfountain Family Skate took place on February 11th at the Erin Arena. All students, staff, and
parents were able to take part in the event. We look forward to another wonderful day together on Friday,
March 11th. Thanks to Mrs. Prins for all her work in organizing both of the events.
Thanks to our Grade 6 students and Mr. Spencer for an incredible Winter Play Day on Wednesday, February
10th. The Grade 6 students created games, led the events, organized the day to make for an exciting, fun-filled
and little chilly play day! Thanks to the volunteers who came out to make and serve hot chocolate which
helped to take the chill out of everyone! A tremendous Belfountain event and tradition goes on!
Our 2016 Underground Railroad was a big success during the last week of February this year. In spite of the
no-bus day due to the snowstorm on Wednesday, we still had all of our students participating in the event,
along with Alton, Ellwood, and Palgrave schools who brought their students to take part. Many thanks to Mrs.
Haines, and her team of staff and volunteers, who organized this Black History Month learning opportunity for
our students. Much appreciated!

JACK SMYTHE FIELD CENTRE
Wednesday, March 16 to Saturday, March 19, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Enjoy the beauty and wonder of nature as Spring blossoms. Jack Smythe Field Centre offers an exceptional
family experience with a visit to its maple syrup bush. Join in on an authentic Canadian tradition.
For a number of years the Peel Field Centres have invited the public for an awe-inspiring visit to our
outstanding Maple Sugar Bush during the March Break. Individuals and families are invited to get involved as
Spring comes to life. Help empty sap buckets, tap trees or sample some freshly made maple syrup as we

celebrate the new syrup season. Take a hike along our tranquil trails and feed the friendly
chickadees by hand.
A teepee and early settler site will also be set up to show how syrup was collected and
produced in centuries past. Use pioneer tools or listen to an Aboriginal tale
around the campfires. No visit would be complete without a trip to the sugar
shack where the sap is boiling and clouds of sweet smelling steam billow out
of the chimney. Learn how modern day syrup operations are conducted with
an industrial evaporator and tap line system. Have a taste of the freshly made
syrup. It's going to be sweet!
The cost is $5/adult and $4/child 12 and under. Lunch will be available for purchase. It will include: hot
chocolate, cookies and hotdogs for you to roast over an open fire. For more information, please contact the

SCHOOL CLOSED FOR PA DAY ON APRIL 11, 2016
As a result of labour settlements with various federations and employee groups, the Ministry of Education has
directed all school boards to create an additional Professional Activity Day this year and for each school year
going forward.
For the 2015-16 school year, the additional PA Day for the Peel District School Board will be April 11,
2016. All Peel board elementary and secondary schools will be closed to students on this day. The next day,
April 12, will remain a Day 4 for students.
