Purpose:
• Today there is a great need to study
about the various baptisms in the
Bible.
• Many people get one baptism
confused with a completely different
kind of baptism.
• To help us grasp the truth, let us open
our Bible’s and study the details of
these various baptisms found in
Scripture.
I. The Baptism Unto Moses
•Nature: Experienced by subjects,
Not commanded 1 Cor. 10:1-2
•Purpose: Save to Moses,
Deliver from Egypt Ex. 14:13, 30, 31; Ps. 106:9-12
•Administrator: God Ex. 14:13, 21, 31; Ps. 106:9
•Subjects: Children of Israel Ex. 3:7, 9, 10;14:29; 1 Cor. 10:1
•Elements: Cloud and Sea 1 Cor. 10:1
•Action: Immersion Ex. 14:22, 29; 15:19
•Duration: One time event
II. The Baptism of John
• Nature: Commanded after call to repent Mt. 3:8-9; Mk. 1:4; Lk. 7:29-30
• Purpose: Prepare the way and people of the Lord
Lk. 1:17; Lk. 3:3-6; Acts 19:4
• Administrator: John the baptist
Mk. 1:4-5; Jn. 1:33; 3:23
• Subjects: Children of Israel & Abraham Lk. 1:67-77; Mt. 3:8-9; 10:5-7
• Element: Water Mk. 1:5; Jn. 1:31, 33
• Action: Immersion Mt. 3:16; Jn. 3:23
• Duration: Ceased at the Cross
Jn. 3:28-30; Acts 18:24-26; 19:1-5
III. Baptism of Suffering
• Nature: Figurative, Experience by (an analogy)
Mt. 20:20-23; Mk. 10:35-40
• Purpose: Show nature of the Kingdom Mt. 20:25-28
• Administrator: Wicked men
Mt.16:21;20:18-19;Acts 12:1-2
• Subjects: Jesus, disciples
Acts 9:16; 1 Cor. 4:9-13
• Element: Suffering , death
Mt. 20:17-18; cf. Acts 12:1-2
• Action: An overwhelming immersion Mt. 20:22-23
• Duration: Ended at cross, Resurrection
Rom. 6:9; Heb. 2:9, 14, 7:25
– Secondarily continues in a figurative sense today Mt. 5:10-12; 2 Tim. 3:12
We Ask You To Come To Jesus
Today To Be Saved:
• Because you’ve heard from God’s word what God
did in sending Jesus to die on the cross for us.
Jn. 3:14-18
• By Believing the Good News of Jesus having died
for your sins Mk. 16:15,16
• Repenting of your sinful living “changing your mind
and actions to serve God, no longer serve sin & the
Devil”! Acts 3:19; 2:38
• Confess “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of
God” Rom. 10:10; Ac.8:37
• Be Immersed in Water “Baptized” for forgiveness of
your sins Acts 22:16

• Administrator: Jesus
Mt. 3:11; Jn. 1:33
• Subjects: Apostles, Cornelius’ household Ac. 1:1-8; 1:26-2:4;
Ac. 11:15-17
• Element: Holy Spirit Acts 1:5
• Action: Compared with immersion in water Acts 1:5
• Duration: Ceased when promise & purpose met

V. The “One Baptism”
Of Christ
• Nature: Commanded

• Purpose: For the remission of sins

3:21; Col. 2:12-13

• Subjects: Penitent believers

VI. The Baptism of Fire
Nature: Warning, Threat of Judgment Matthew 3:7-12
Purpose: Punishment, Vengeance
Mt. 25:41, 46; Rom. 2:8-9; 2 Thes. 1:8-9; 2 Pet. 2:9
Administrator: Christ Mt. 10:28; 2 Thes. 1:7-9
Subjects: Wicked Mt. 25:26, 30; Rom. 2:8-9; 1 Cor. 6:9-11; 2 Pet. 2:9; Rev. 21:8
Element: Unquenchable fire & brimstone Mt. 3:12; 25:41; Mk. 9:43, 45, 47; Rev. 21:8
Action: Overwhelming Immersion Matthew 3:11
Duration: Mt. 25:41, 46; Rev. 7:15; 14:11 (Day & Night); Rev. 4:9 Forever
