Francisco Goya

• What lesson did Goya teach us while he taught Rosarita regarding how to create her pieces of art?

• We will follow his instruction as we develop our skill at sketching.

Leonardo da Vinci• Renaissance • Early 1500s• Leonardo da Vinci

• Painter, inventor, architect, stage & costume designer,

• Horseman, chef, – Geologists = – Botanists =

• Studied the anatomy of his subjects of art to give the impression of 3-D– The anatomy showed where to

lay in shadows and highlights

• SHADING OBJECTS & SURFACESGood lightingNote where the light is coming from on your sketch

pad• OBSERVATION SKILLS: Look carefully at your object/s using

all your senses to make sure you are “REALLY SEEING” the object before you begin sketching.

Look for shadows on objectLook for shadows on SURFACELook for HIGHlights on object Look for HIGHlights on SURFACE

HIGHlights=HIGHEST POINT of object to light• OUTLINE OBJECT & SURFACES (“ghost lines”)• LAY IN SHADOWS

All shadows will be on the same side of the object and same side of the surface as they are of the object

Shadows & Highlights (Con’t)Very lightly OUTLINE where you see shadows fall

LAY IN SHADOWS Hold your SKETCH pencil at a diagonalHeavy pressure for darkest shadowsLighter pressure for shadows that are lighter valuesWith your finger blend from dark to light shadows

Make sure you find ALL the shadowsHighlighting (lighting that is brightest on the higher parts of the

object facing the source of light) Very lightly OUTLINE where you see shadows fallEasiest to achieve by using your eraser or making sure to

leave the surface where highlights fall NEGATIVE.Now use your fingers or blending tool to create grading &

blend the lightly shaded areas into the highlighted area.CLEAN UP ENTIRE SKETCH WITH ERASER WHEN

BLENDING MADE SMUDGES OUTSIDE THE OUTLINES.

Sketch #7If you don’t feel confident enough to sketch more complex objects as compared to a cylinder, sphere, cone, follow along with Peggy Robertson in this video on how to draw a teddy bear.

You will first need to practice a cone (used to form the nose of the teddy bear) from this video:

Now try the teddy bear here: (If you stay in the window of the first teddy bear link, it will auto load Part2, 3, 4, & 5.TEDDY BEAR PART 1 TEDDY BEAR PART 3 the lines she uses to create the fur, is one of the texture techniques we learned earlier.TEDDY BEAR PART 2 TEDDY BEAR PART 4 is actually Part 5; I think she lost track.Make sure you read and fulfill all of the rubric for this assignment.
