• Think about why the ecumene covers such a small area.

• Write and explain:1. Identify the 4 classifications of sparsely

Sparsely Populated Areas:Dry Lands

• Between 15-50 north and south latitude

• Sahara, Arabian, Thar, Takla Makan, Gobi deserts

• Exceptions: • Some areas allow for

irrigation.• Oil reserves encourage

settlements

• Located 0-20 degrees north and south of equator

• Rainfall 50-90 inches per year

• Exceptions: Seasonal rainfall may still support large populations

• Located near North and South Poles

• Fewer people live there than in deserts

• Exceptions:• Military expeditions• Research teams
