behind the scenes of my presentation
Get a buy-in from your audience as soon as possible. It can be as simple as asking questions that people are going to say yes to. Once they start saying yes, psychologically they will start to resonate with you. Comedy can also be a good buy-in, although it can be difficult to start off with in a small group. In a big group, it easier to do and can set the tone for what is to come. In my presentation, I started with comedy and then emphasized a commonality between myself and the participants. Both were my buy-ins.
strike an emotional chord
A good presentation will take the participants where the presenter wants them to go. Whether it is laughing, crying (not in a bad way), excitement, etc. In my presentation, I wanted to take the participants on a varied experience. One of laughter, excitement at the prospect of presenting, and finally a personal story that would resonate emotionally that the audience would remember.
different ways of teaching
Different people like to learn in different ways. Some people are very visual, others are tactile and others are sound based. You can add several dimensions to your presentation as long as it doesn’t get too convoluted or confusing. In my presentation, I had personal pictures, powerful pictures, a prop (Elvis glasses), and I also included music. Videos are good if they are powerful and don’t disturb the flow of your presentation.
engage the audience
It’s important to keep the audience engaged. Usually in the workbook groups, it will not be an issue. As soon as people begin to share, the ball will roll quite easily from there. Just remember to maintain control and keep the focus of the discussions on the material. In a large group, you can do group activities. I chose to have the audience demonstrate the bobble heads and jazz hands. I also led them in the “I can give a great presentation” chant. They were designed to make the audience a part of the presentation instead of a passive participant.
