La Salle College High School is a Catholic independent educational institution that emphasizes religious values and academic excellence. We depend on full and timely payment of tuition, rather than Church or government subsidies. La Salle makes every effort to minimize fees and tuition increases while providing the very best quality education consistent with Catholic values. When a student registers at La Salle we hold a place for that student and commit resources to optimize the educational experience of that student. In addition, we design staffing, supplies, and programs based on the number of registered students. Each year, we forgo potential income by limiting the number of incoming students when we commit a place for your son. Thus, once a semester begins, no tuition will be refunded for that semester for any reason, after September 10th for the 1st Semester and January 31st for the 2nd Semester.
1. Tuition for the 2012-13 academic year is $18,700. In addition, as applicable:
$430 for grade 12 senior fee (includes actual retreat, yearbook, and graduation expenses)
$7,600 for David program tuition
$320 for all those in the instrumental or choral music programs
$1,050 – $1,995 for those on La Salle bus routes
a. The non-refundable $1,000 payment made at initial enrollment acceptance is a tuition credit; registration for grades 10-12 occurs each spring and includes a non-refundable $300 fee collected separately ($50 is a rostering fee - $250 is a credit towards 2012-13 tuition). Application fees collected from prospective students are non-refundable and are not tuition credits.
b. Scholarship and financial aid credits are divided evenly by semester.
c. Returned checks generate a $15 bank fee, which we pass along.
d. Overdue balances cause monthly fees equal to the greater of $20 or 1% of the balance.
e. Financial Aid is available and must be applied for annually.
2. There are several payment options available to all students:
a. Semester Invoices If you do not enroll in the monthly plan, you will
automatically receive semester invoices from La Salle due in full July 15th and November 15th. Late fee assessments begin on these dates. La Salle does NOT accept credit card payments for tuition, but HES, our monthly vendor will accept credit card payments for BOTH semester and monthly invoices (with a convenience fee attached).
b. Monthly Installments We urge all families who cannot respond fully and on
time to semester invoices to please enroll in the April-January monthly payment plan offered through Higher Education Services (800-422-0010). There is a $40 per family membership fee.
3. All students must meet each semester’s obligation on time or must be on time in the monthly HES plan in order to attend La Salle. There are no other special payment plans, so please enroll in HES and stay current to avoid loss of student participation privileges. Should an unpaid balance still result, it leads to late fees and loss of both curricular and extracurricular participation, including reception of grades, transcripts, and graduation. If membership in HES is lost, full payment is due to La Salle immediately.

Upperclass Registration Course SelectionRegistration of current freshmen, sophomores, and juniors for the 2012-2013 school year will soon begin. This process traditionally takes place between early February and mid April. Selecting courses over a period of weeks has a number of benefits. Primarily, it will allow the student body to get personally involved in the selection process while exploring options related to their “wants” and “needs”. As is customary, current juniors will be the first to select their courses. Our 11th graders will begin the process during February in their Group Advisory class. Sophomore and freshmen students will follow in early March using the same means. Course selection for upperclassmen is expected to wrap up as we break for the Easter holiday on Wednesday, April 4, 2012.
Motivated by the spirit of “going green”, La Salle’s curricular guide will once again be used primarily in a digital format. It should be noted that students have already been using this registration resource located on the school’s website and in the Naviance scheduling software. Just like last year, the updated Program of Studies will be introduced in advisory classes. Students will be reintroduced to La Salle’s course requirements and the curricular options at this time. These class meetings will be followed by additional and more personal interactions with counselors, teachers, and students. Parental involvement has been, and will continue to be, an important part in the development and oversight of the course selection process. Eventually, parents can expect to “sign off” on the list of approved courses their sons have selected. As noted, the selection protocol presents each student with meaningful opportunities to discuss their personal curricular plan. This is intentional. If done properly, it will minimize surprises while producing predictable outcomes when schedules are received in August. Finally, the preregistration fee of $300 will be due on Monday, February 10, 2012.
Overall, the registration and course selection process is described as follows:Brother Richard Kestler, FSC ’60 announces the tuition for the upcoming year in his annual January letter to families. Academic Affairs then sends a separate follow-up letter to each family explaining the registration process and requesting the registration fee. This year’s fee is $300 (with $250 applied to the upcoming year’s tuition). The collection due date of Friday, February 10, 2012, intentionally falls after the distribution of semester grades. This important deadline begins the school wide process of allocating resources for our upcoming academic year.
Mr. Thomas Barna, Assistant Principal for Academic Affairs, addresses the student body through a WEXP broadcast in late January. This broadcast outlines La Salle’s registration procedures and timeline. Additionally, students are reminded of their registration fee obligation; without it the
process does not move forward. Furthermore, it is assumed that students who do not pay their fee are not intending to return for the next academic year.
Students review the updated Program of Studies with help from their counselors in Group Advisory classes. Additional guidance is dispensed in this small group setting. The process is managed weekly by counselors through advisory class. During this “What can I take?” and “What should I take?” segment, students consult their parents, teachers, and counselors. Mr. Barna and Mr. Coggins visit all Group Advisory classes to provide appropriate information specific to the administration of the curriculum. Meanwhile, counselors, teachers, administrators, students, and parents continue to discuss options associated with course selection. Completion depends on a variety of mitigating factors. One reason may include sorting out general, regular, and advanced placements. This naturally slows the process and should not be viewed as a problem.
By late March students and their parents are expected to review a “Course Selection Validation” form. A parent signature, approving the selected courses, finalizes the process. The selection process ends school wide in late March. Students and/or parents have until Wednesday, April 4, 2012, to request changes by working through the appropriate teacher and/or counselor.
During the month of April and May, resources are determined and secured for the new academic year. The office of Academic Affairs officially begins scheduling the courses requested at this time. The success of this labor-intensive process is directly related to the timeliness of meeting deadlines and completeness of information. Please encourage your son to take the entire process seriously. May, June, and July are not the time for students to reopen the course selection process. Students experiencing scheduling conflicts are contacted personally throughout the summer to resolve them. Once the school year begins there are NO course changes without compelling educational reasons such as a medical issue or diagnosed and documented learning difference. Changes made after the April 4, 2012 deadline are strongly discouraged.
A Note Regarding Academic HonorsThe grade point averages of La Salle students are determined twice a year at the end of each semester. It is at these times when our Honors lists are compiled. Please be aware that semester exams have not been completed with the submission of this article. La Salle will continue to include its Honor Roll in publications like The Belcroft as soon as grade point averages are made available. Additionally, you should know that La Salle notifies each Honor student’s appropriate parish. Please recognize that La Salle has no control over how each parish responds to our request to publicize your son’s academic success.

Men of IntellectLa Salle College High School recognized thirty-five scholarship winners from the Class of 2016 on Thursday, January 12, 2012. The evening highlighted the academic achievements of these 8th grade students, who represent twenty-four different grade/middle schools. The awardees received academic scholarships ranging from $6,500 to $18,700 based on their performance on the Scholarship and Entrance Exam administered at the school on Saturday, December 3, 2011.
The guests were addressed by La Salle seniors Malcolm Flynn and Frank Worthington and were introduced to the various programs and opportunities at the school. The scholarship recipients were each able to invite their parents along with their favorite teacher. All of the guests were hosted at their table by a current La Salle senior along with a member of the faculty and staff.

Valentine’s Day DanceThis dance will take place on Friday, February 10, 2012 from 7:30 to 10:30 pm. Tickets will go on sale beginning Friday, February 3, 2012. The cost is $15 per person. Music will be provided by DJ Miro Productions ( James Mirynowski ’08).
Inclement WeatherThe announcement for school closings is made via ALERT NOW messages, the La Salle web site, KYW News (school number is 333), and television (CBS3 and 6ABC). Early dismissals will be conveyed the same way. We would appreciate your cooperation in not calling the school on these days.
Senior 100 Day CelebrationOn Thursday, February 23, 2012, the 5th annual event will be held to mark 100 days until Graduation for the Class of 2012. The seniors will be treated to dinner and a show with hypnotist, Kevin Hurley. This event has proven to be a great night for the seniors and the faculty and staff who join them.
La Salle RespondsWith three dress down days so far this year (October, November, January), we have been able to honor the requests from groups/organizations with monetary distributions totaling almost $13,000. The money was used to support our Thanksgiving Food Drive (turkeys), Secret Santa (toys for critically ill children), Hustle for Muscle (Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy research), Kelly Rooney Foundation (cancer research), Breathing Room Foundation (support families of terminally ill cancer patients), For Pete’s Sake (supports respite care for terminally ill cancer patients), OYE Honduras organization, CPT Galeazzi Recovery Fund, Delaware Valley Alzheimer’s Association, Catholic Worker, Ali Brandi Catholic Center at Syracuse University, Blessed Sarnelli Community, Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia, and the Mid-Atlantic Connection for PKU (improving the health and well-being of individuals and families affected by PKU and related metabolic disorders). Three additional dress down days (February, March, April) will be held during the second semester. Applications for funds are being submitted by students, faculty and staff.
Campus StoreThe school year is passing by quickly. We have restocked on some of our most popular items, so come in and give us a browse. We will be open for Freshman Registration on the evenings of Wednesday, February 15, 2012, Thursday, February 16, 2012, and Wednesday, February 22, 2012. We will be also open on Sunday, February 26, 2012 for the Mother/Son Brunch, Saturday, March 3, 2012 for the 7th Grade Practice Test, and Sunday, March 4, 2012 for the Communion Breakfast/Hall of Fame Induction.

Attendance ReminderWith cold and flu season already here, there may be days when your son in unable to attend school. La Salle understands this, but please remember that an excused absence is one that is due to illness or family emergency. If your son is absent he should be proactive. Contacting a reliable classmate the night of the absence and/or communicating with the teacher at the earliest convenient time is expected; absent students are responsible for missed work.
On a related note, it is important to clarify that outside of illness or emergency, school attendance is compulsory. A family vacation does not qualify as an excused absence. School holidays and breaks are published well in advance so as to offer parents an opportunity to plan their vacations at a time that does not interfere with attendance policies. Families and their sons cannot expect teachers to accommodate missed work/opportunities for any unexcused absence. Unexcused absences during midterm or final examinations are strictly prohibited.
Please keep in mind that attendance throughout the school year is vital to a student’s academic success. There is no doubt that the correlation between absences and grades is extraordinary. As a rule of thumb, students who miss school have grades that reflect their gaps in learning. Please support our efforts to have your son in school daily and on time. Remember, the school’s main number should not be used to report any student absence. All attendance matters are expected to be reported to the Attendance Line at (215) 402-4140 before 8:00 am. A note is required upon returning to school. Thank you for your help in this area.

Advanced Multimedia Students Win FinalSite “Break the Brick” Video ContestThe La Salle College High School students enrolled in the Advanced Multimedia Production class wrote, shot, and edited a video for FinalSite’s Break the Brick Contest. The La Salle entry is entitled “Epic S’More Time.”
On Friday, January 13, 2012, Director of Multimedia Technology, Mr. Robert Johnson, was notified by FinalSite President Jon Moser that his class won the contest and the WEXP TV Studio would be receiving an iPad2 for winning first prize. This was the first year La Salle has entered this worldwide contest.
The FinalSite “Break the Brick” Contest requires students at schools using the FinalSite software to come up with a creative way to “break” a brick of chocolate provided by FinalSite to their client schools around the country. The La Salle Students’ idea was to use the chocolate brick to create a giant S’More - and the resulting video was “deliciously fantastic”.
Since 1998, FinalSite has been bringing cutting-edge web design and web software to leading independent schools, colleges, and organizations around the world. FinalSite currently serves over 400 independent schools and a total of over 1,000 schools and educational organizations of all types in forty different states including D.C. in the U.S. and forty-one countries across the globe.
Students Soar!What better way to spend a fall afternoon than flying 2000’ above beautiful Bucks County! That’s exactly what several members of the La Salle Aeronautics Club got to do on a recent outing to the Philadelphia Glider Council in Hilltown, PA. Founded in 1941, PGC is one of the premier glider clubs in the country. Its current President, Bob Lacovara, was thrilled to host the La Salle students. Daniel Nowakowski, founder of the Aeronautics Club, is also the Youth Coordinator for PGC. He started flying there at the age of fourteen and has since gone on to earn his Private Pilot’s License this past October. Part of his motivation for starting the Aeronautics Club at La Salle was to share his passion for aviation. In addition to experiencing first-hand the thrill of flying, this outing also linked current and former La Salle classmates. Matt Giannini, Class of 1975, was one of the instructor pilots offering rides. He is an accomplished graduate and pilot having flown helicopters, single engine aircraft, as well as gliders. Matt enjoys passing along to future generations the thrill of flying. Having the opportunity to fly with fellow Lasallians made the event even more special. In addition to the students, Matt Kwasizur ’07 graduate who currently serves as an assistant moderator for the Aeronautics Club, also had the opportunity to fly. An aeronautical engineer by trade, Matt welcomed the opportunity to put theory into practice as he flew with Giannini. Giannini said, “Matt was a natural”.
The Aeronautics Club meets on a monthly basis and its goal is to introduce students to various career opportunities in the field of aviation, whether as a pilot, engineer, or air traffic controller. The club hosts guest speakers from a variety of backgrounds including military, commercial, and private pilots as well as aeronautical engineers.

Building Bridges of SolidarityBolivia
A contingent of sixteen LaSalle students accompanied by two teachers and lead by
Senora Breen headed to Bolivia, South America this past July to perform various service
projects over a two-week period. The students were based in Cochabamba, Bolivia and
traveled to several mountain villages where they helped set up greenhouses and painted
school rooms. A homeless shelter was visited and food items were given to these
people and a 21” television was also donated. The traveling students also helped prepare
food for the people at the shelter. Shoes and clothing were collected prior to the journey and over 800
pounds of various articles were distributed to the needy in several mountainous villages, including
toothbrushes, toothpaste, and baby pacifiers. The contingent also constructed playgrounds at various
schools. These young men also visited a hospital that was for delivering babies. The lack of modern
equipment amazed all. At this hospital, each mother was given an outfit, bib, stuffed animal and pacifier
for their newborn. The experience was a life changing even for everyone involved. It made me grateful for
the wonderful country we reside in, he great parents we have, and the many blessings of everyday life.
Thank you Senora Breen for your loving devotion to these wonderful people.

SENIORSThere’s money out there. Our college website, www.lschs.org/college has links to numerous scholarship search sites as well as a variety of posted scholarship opportunities. Check out “The La Salle College Counseling Center Scholarship List” for a list of scholarships that come into our office. Don’t miss out on these possibilities.
File financial aid forms. Be sure to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible. Many colleges have priority deadlines of February 15th or March 1st. Before filling out the FAFSA, register for a PIN at www.pin.ed.gov. This will serve as your electronic signature. The FAFSA application must be completed in order to apply for state, federal, and institutional financial aid. Deadlines must be met. It is important to fill out the FAFSA form completely and to estimate if necessary. It is better to meet the deadline and make changes later than to miss the deadline and potentially miss out on financial aid. You can file the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. We strongly encourage everyone to fill out the FAFSA. At the very least it will make your son eligible for several low interest loans such as the Federal Stafford Loan. If there are extenuating circumstances that a college financial aid officer at a college where your son has been admitted should know, do not hesitate to report these changes or circumstances to the colleges. Certain colleges may also require either their own institutional financial aid form or the College Scholarship Services (CSS) Profile. Be aware of colleges’ requirements and meet the deadlines since many are already currently due.
Keep grades up. Admissions decisions are contingent on the successful completion of all course work. Admissions officers reserve the right to question poor second semester performance and, in some cases, to reverse an admissions decision that has already been made. We have examples of students whose grades dropped second semester resulting in their receiving letters from the college or university they planned to attend informing them their acceptance will now be re-considered.
Return award letter.In March or April, your son should begin receiving merit and need based grant awards from the colleges to which he applied. After he compares award letters, he should pick the college he wants to attend and return the signed award letter to the chosen college. Pay close attention to deadlines for accepting the award package. Deadlines are usually within two weeks after receiving the award letter. If he misses a deadline, he may risk losing a scholarship, grant, or loan assistance.
Communicate with faculty and the College Counseling Department. Please encourage your son to thank the teachers who may have written letters of recommendation on his behalf. Also, please remember to bring copies of all college acceptance and scholarship letters to Mrs. O’Connell in the College Counseling Center.
Decline admission offers to other colleges. After he has chosen and committed to a college, your son should write a note declining admission to colleges where he has been accepted, but will not be attending. This will allow students on a wait list to be accepted and awarded the aid previously held for your son.
Submit deposit and housing application. Once your son knows which college he wants to attend, he can submit a housing application and deposit if he will be living on campus. He needs to do this as soon as possible because most rooms are assigned on a first-come first-served basis. The National Reply Date is May 1, 2012.
Do not double deposit. Each year some seniors have a difficult time making up their minds about which college to enroll in after they have been accepted. Students may NOT send deposits to more than one college on or after May 1, 2012. This is called “double depositing” and is an unethical practice. Should the colleges involved determine that a student has “double deposited” your son’s admission may be jeopardized. This practice is unfair to other applicants. The “double depositor” is taking up a spot that could go to another student, who will instead be wait-listed or turned down. It is an acceptable practice to deposit at one college and maintain your name on a wait list at another. However, indicating to two colleges that you will be attending by sending deposits to both should not be considered.
NCAAStudents who are planning to participate in Division I or II athletics in college must complete the NCAA Clearinghouse Eligibility form available online at www.eligibilitycenter.org and request that a transcript be sent. See Mrs. O’Connell in the College Counseling Office. Transcripts will be sent to the NCAA upon request and again after graduation. Search “Academics and Athletes” and “Information for College Bound Student-Athletes and Parents” on the NCAA site. NCAA requirements for eligibility are printed at that site, on our College Counseling site, and in our school calendar.

More than fifteen years ago, Joe Radvansky, a veteran math teacher at LaSalle College High School, collapsed while jogging. Mr. Radvansky, a coach for the LaSalle football team, was accustomed to regular
exercise. After a series of medical tests, he was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, a chronic condition causing deterioration of the heart muscle, and compromising the ability of the heart to pump blood. Joe did not know how long he had to live. He lay in the hospital for three months until a very gracious, generous family donated the heart of their husband, son, and father who was mortally injured. Joe was not only given this young man’s heart, but also a chance to see his children grow up and the opportunity to hold his grandchild. The road to health was not easy. Joe lay in intensive care with machines providing the basic functions of life. Teachers, students, and representatives of LaSalle organizations visited regularly. At Christmas, a tree and presents were delivered to Joe’s home with a card signed simply – Santa. At the last Thanksgiving Prayer Ceremony, Joe spoke of his boundless appreciation for the La Salle community who supported him as he recuperated.
Joe Radvansky’s story, though unique in many ways, follows a theme of the LaSalle Community which I’ve witnessed from the day I arrived, nine years ago. That first September, I attended the opening faculty meeting where Fran Johnson, a member of the English Faculty, was welcomed back after being diagnosed and treated for cancer. A short three weeks later, at
another hastily called meeting, Fran announced he went back to his doctor and found cancer had metastasized throughout his body. With courage I had never before witnessed, he announced he would be retiring from the faculty to be with his family. The response from La Salle was unbelievable. The Mothers’ Club, Fathers’ Club, faculty, and students responded in force. They donated money, sent family dinners, cleaned leaves and branches
outside the home, and visited. For someone unaccustomed to seeing a community provide support, this was overwhelming.
La Salle responds even when the difficulty is less dramatic. In August 2011, the rainiest month on record for the East coast, the home of one faculty member was inundated as tropical storm Lee trailed hurricane Irene flooding parts of Ambler. In the days following the flood, La Salle Facilities lent the family the school’s power washer to help clean out the basement. Because the family had no hot water, faculty members allowed them to shower in their homes. One faculty member lent them a space heater until their furnace was repaired. The La Salle Emergency Fund (set up by faculty for just such emergencies) helped the family purchase a new water heater. Two Faculty members generously donated a used washer and dryer and still another lent power tools. The faculty member’s letter of thanks to the La Salle community left everyone teary eyed.
La Salle’s generosity goes beyond the LaSalle community. Every year students, parents and faculty donate thousands of hours of service to various organizations cleaning up buildings, visiting senior centers, and fixing computers. At Thanksgiving, La Salle collects thousands of cans of food. At Christmas students
donate mounds of toys for sick and needy children. Throughout the year, thousands of dollars are collected for various organizations.
On Valentine’s Day, people give those they love a symbol of appreciation. At La Salle, appreciation and caring are shown by faculty, students, and their families each day of the year. Certainly in a group of people numbering in the thousands there will always be differences, but the essence of the Christianity, present and living in the Christian Brothers, has spread its tentacles of love deep into the fiber of the LaSalle faculty, staff, students, and alumni. What other proof can there be that at La Salle the tender Love of Christ flows freely?
Help your son prepare to combat peer pressure in school. Peer pressure is a part of everyday life. It can be harmful – like when teens convince another to drink. It can also be harmless – like when teens ask another to eat lunch with them. It can even be helpful – like when teens convince someone to join a study group.
In order to know when it’s okay to follow the crowd, your son needs to know how to handle peer pressure. Here’s how to help:
• Talk about issues like drugs, alcohol, sex and dating. Make sure your son knows your family’s values and what you think about these topics. This will help him know when it’s time to stand his ground.
• Banish bullying. Explain to your son that bullying is never the right thing to do. He should know that if a group of friends begins to bully another teen, he should refuse to participate. And if someone is in danger of being hurt, it is his responsibility to notify an adult.
• Ask your son’s opinion on a few issues you are dealing with. Really listen to what he has to say. This encourages him to think for himself in many situations.
Seven character traits may determine your son’s success. When you think of “good character” you may think of a person who is kind, generous and thoughtful.
These are great characteristics for a person to have. But recently, research has been focusing on other aspects of character: zest, grit, self-control, social intelligence, gratitude, optimism and curiosity.
Students who possess these qualities are more likely to succeed in school. They’re more likely to keep trying after setbacks. In fact, students with these characteristics are more likely to succeed than students who are intelligent but not as driven.
To build: • Zest, show enthusiasm for what your son is learning.
“Wow, zebra fish can regrow their fins? That’s really interesting!”
• Grit, praise your son’s perseverance. “I’m really proud of how you stuck with that geometry homework until you got it.”
• Self-control, give your son responsibilities. Being able to complete tasks at home without being reminded means he will be able to direct himself at school.
• Social intelligence, suggest that your son put himself in others’ shoes. “Why do you think John reacted like that?”

• Gratitude, go beyond just making sure your son says please and thank you. Discuss why he feels grateful.
• Optimism, encourage your son to look at the bright side of events.
• Curiosity, help your son explore more about what he is learning. Head to the library or research information online.
Who is to blame for arguments with your son? Teens and parents don’t always see eye to eye. It’s natural for parents to think arguments are all their teen’s fault. But before you lay the blame at your teen’s feet, ask yourself these questions:
1. Do you avoid bringing up past problems when you are discussing a current problem?
2. Do you stay on track when your son tries to change the subject by criticizing you?
3. Do you acknowledge that you may not have remembered something you said correctly if you and your son are disagreeing about something you said?
4. Do you recognize the point at which your son starts to feel under attack and stop the conversation to wait until you are both calmer?
5. Do you make a real effort to understand your teen’s position?
How well are you doing? Each yes answer means you are trying to reduce the intensity of arguments you have with your son. For no answers, try the ideas in the quiz.
Build your son’s vocabulary to improve performance on the SAT.English has the most words of any language on Earth. There are over 300,000 words in the English language, with about 35,000 that are regularly used.
It’s no wonder, then, that the vocabulary section of the SAT can be so hard to prepare for. The test creators have literally thousands of words from which to choose!
Luckily, there are ways your son can build his vocabulary. First, encourage your son to ask his English teacher for a list of words commonly found on the SAT. Then, suggest that your son:
Make flashcards. It’s the oldest trick in the book and one of the most effective. Once your son has created flashcards, have him spend ten minutes reviewing a selection of the cards at the end of each day’s homework. That little bit of effort will add up to a big payoff when he takes the SAT.
Read. Reading is still the best way to build vocabulary. It shows students how words are actually used.
Go online. Try out http://test yourvocab.com, which claims to “measure” how many words you know. Encourage your son to take the online test now and then take it again in a couple months to see how his vocabulary has grown. He could also visit other websites, such as http://vocabtest.com, which offers SAT-style vocabulary questions.
Making a plan can increase motivation. When he’s working on something he wants to do, your son can be highly motivated. He’ll work for hours on designing the set for the school play, for example. So why do you have to keep telling him to finish her science lab report?
One reason is that when you tell your son to do something, he may feel like you are nagging him and most teens have developed the skill of tuning out parental nagging.
Still, there are ways you can motivate your son to do things, even if they aren’t high on his list of favorite tasks. You can:
• Discuss the consequences. Acknowledge that there is probably a reason he’s avoiding the task. Then ask, “But what’s going to happen if you keep putting it off?” That way, you get him to recognize the consequences of not taking action.
• Ask if he’d like to make a plan. “Let’s brainstorm and create a schedule that will work for you.” Teens are always more motivated to act on a plan they helped develop.
• Help with time management. Teens often think that they can do more than they realistically can accomplish. You might say, “How long did the lab report take you last week? Maybe leaving 20 minutes won’t be enough time.”

Andrew J. In 1994, while an undergraduate college student, he started providing computer and networking consulting services to small businesses in the Philadelphia area.
In 1997 he founded CTN Solutions to provide IT services to companies with less than 1,000 computer users. The company has expanded to provide virtual / hosted services, managed services, and IT staff augmentation. CTN helps their clients understand IT from a strategic perspective as a tool to meet their business goals and objectives.
In recent years, CTN has experienced phenomenal growth as the need for reliable and skilled IT providers remains strong. For four consecutive years, CTN has been listed in the Philadelphia 100 fastest growing privately held companies sponsored by the Philadelphia Business Journal and the Wharton School Small Business Development Center. Drew attributes much of his business and personal success to the involvement in a number of non-profit and charitable organizations although the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) Foundation has been a special focus of his efforts. Among his accomplishments, he involved HOBY with the 1997 Presidents’ Summit for Volunteerism and has traveled
with Hugh O’Brian, HOBY’s founder, to establish programs in Europe and the Middle East. He has traveled extensively to countries such as Bosnia, Kosovo, Serbia, Israel, and Guatemala working with people afflicted with poverty and victims of war and genocide. He established a leadership training program for youth throughout the Balkans and frequently travels to the region as a speaker and presenter.
His current board service includes the Board of Trustees of Philadelphia University, Mid Atlantic Employers Association, and Youth Work Foundation of the Union League of Philadelphia.
His past board service includes chairman and board member of Caring People Alliance of Philadelphia, Philadelphia Academies, Entrepreneur’s Forum of Philadelphia, and the Hugh O’Brian Youth Foundation.
Drew has received a number of awards in recognition of his business and civic leadership. Philadelphia University awarded him the Philip Elkin award for business leadership in 2007. In 2005, Drew received the distinction of “40 under 40” in Philadelphia. This group of 40 young professionals is recognized annually for their roles in the business and civic community. Drew was presented HOBY’s Alumni Achievement Award in 2006 in recognition of his work to serve youth throughout the world.
He received bachelors’ degrees in information systems and finance from Philadelphia University in 1996 and a master’s of business administration in international business from Philadelphia University in 1999. He serves as an adjunct professor of international business, entrepreneurship, and information technology at both Philadelphia University and St. Joseph’s University..

On behalf of the Board of the Men of La Salle, we’re looking forward to a great winter and spring 2012. As the second semester gets underway for all La Salle families, let’s remember the opportunities we have to promote the father/son bond beyond the school day. In addition to our monthly meetings, traditionally held on the first Thursday night of the month, we have a number of events you can participate in.
Our first event has room for fathers and sons as well as family and friends. La Salle’s first ever Comedy Night will be taking place on Sunday February 12, 2012 starting at 5:00 pm. Come out and join what will surely be an enthusiastic crowd as we start off with a local favorite, McNally’s own Schmitter® sandwich coupled with chips and a drink in the cafeteria and then move up to the auditorium to hear three hilarious local comics get the crowd laughing and enjoying themselves. We have senior Max Breitmayer as our emcee and this event will be open and material appropriate to everyone high school age and above.
In March we have a bowling event and sophomore Branch-Out Day. Coming up in April, we will make our annual trip to Baltimore to take in a Baltimore Orioles baseball game.
We encourage all parents to get involved with their sons as the years go by too fast. There are plenty of opportunities all over campus to make sure the La Salle experience you and your family have is worthwhile for all involved.

Spring training for major league baseball is upon us and the Men of La Salle have already secured our date for the annual Father & Son baseball trip to Camden Yards in Baltimore. This annual event is one of the most popular events on the school calendar as it provides you with the opportunity to spend a unique day with your son regardless of whether you are a baseball fan or not.
This event is also meant to include grandfathers, uncles, cousins and those boys who may not have a father (we will not exclude any mothers that may be interested).

Buses will leave the school parking lot at 10:00am sharp to provide enough time before the game to explore the stadium and collect batting practice balls hit into our section. Seats are in the sunny lower boxes along the left field foul line.After the game, time will be allotted to venture over to the Inner Harbor for a bite to eat and other entertainment. Buses will leave from the Aquarium exactly at 7:00pm.

Parents’ Advisory CouncilThe La Salle College High School Parents’ Advisory Council (PAC) is a group of parents who believe strongly in the Lasallian educational experience and who are committed to ensuring that La Salle College High School can continue to provide a Catholic, college preparatory education that fosters academic excellence, service, and leadership. PAC is charged with the leadership of the Parent Annual Fund, which runs in the spring and has become a key element of parent involvement at La Salle.
The Parent Annual Fund provides funding for Professional Development, and allows the dedicated men and women of La Salle to continue their own educations via post-graduate degrees and certifications. In doing so, we are able to adhere to Saint John Baptist de La Salle’s mission of educating not only the young students of his schools, but also the men and women directing these students.
