HUNTER LIFESTYLE

Australia’s oldest wine region, the Hunter Valley is brimming with young blood and a vibrant food scene.

Explore the countless vineyards for which this wine country is renowned, cellaring fine vintages for special occasions or quiet tipples at home.

Replenish in the sunFor breakfast and brunch options, the choices are many. Start the day al fresco, with fine Campos coffee in Café Enzo’s enchanting courtyard or alongside the antique open fireplace indoors. Or try the Two Fat Blokes Gourmet Kitchen, a casual Euro deli/café, alongside De Iuliis winery in Pokolbin.

Made with loveStock up on delicious cured meats at Lovedale Smokehouse where Ben Sales smokes bacon, chorizo, duck, ham, mussels, rainbow trout, salami, salmon, turkey, and more.

Quaffing off the beaten trackFor a taste of something a little more boutique, pop down to the Small Winemakers Centre showcasing the best boutique wineries of the region including Hart & Hunter, Thomas Wines and The Little Wine Company.

Dinner with a viewBistro Molines is unparalleled for views and provincial French food, although Esca Bimbadgen comes close in the scenery stealing stakes.

June brings fine fareCome June each year, the annual Hunter Valley Wine and Food Month shines a spotlight on the area’s vibrant wine scene and its culinary offerings, which have gained newfound attention in the past few years.

Head to Muse when the first black figs roll in for the season, paired with entrees,

mains, local game and desserts.

Exemplary semillon and shiraz are a given, but new single-vineyard wines

have the place abuzz.

Pokolbin’s Binnorie Dairy specialise in soft cheeses using locally

sourced milk. Taste their signature marinated fetta, labna and duetto.

Life centres around the grape, the glass and the plate in the Hunter. And living here means there’s no need to rush. You get to savour them all in your own good time.

Muse chef – Troy Rhoades-Brown

Troy Rhoades-Brown exemplifies the Hunter’s new wave of culinary talent. Co-owner and head chef of the one-hatted Muse Restaurant at Hungerford Hill and newer venture, Muse Kitchen, Troy has won acclaim for his focus on seasonal, regional food and exceptional service.

Muse Restaurant is now one of the most respected restaurants in the Hunter Valley. It won its first Chef ’s Hat in The Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide 18 months after opening. In the same year the Restaurant and Catering Association awarded Muse the best regional restaurant in NSW and Contemporary Australian Restaurant Regional NSW.

Three years later, Troy took out the title of Young Restaurateur of the Year 2014 at the Appetite for Excellence awards.

The original Muse offers fine dining in a soaring timber, stone and glazed space with a massive stone fireplace, while sister venue, Muse Kitchen, is a more casual dining experience. Yet both share a similar seasonal focus on locally sourced produce. Follow Troy’s tweets and you will see he spends as much time harvesting herbs and vegetables from their own garden as he does in the kitchen.

EVERYDAY LIFE MOVES TO A MORE RELAXED RHYTHM

Local. It’s a word that pops up often in the Hunter Valley – in its menus, its produce, and its sense of community.

Off the land, into the kitchen, and onto the plate. It’s the kind of honest ethos that makes people who live here feel a heightened connection to place and a rare and welcoming camaraderie that lifts the spirit.

Proximity to Sydney has made the Hunter Valley one of the most visited regions in Australia. But rapid new expressway connections have given it new focus as a place to live year-round.

Look around. Rolling hillsides give you space to breathe; café culture is flourishing; and talented young chefs are creating a thriving and diverse foodie scene.

Like a piece of heaven that’s fallen to earth, the area is overflowing with farmers’ markets, chic day spas, fine restaurants, elegant galleries, quaint country towns, antique shops in historic villages and beautiful scenery.

Follow the aroma of espresso to sunny outdoor tables with mountains as a backdrop. Give in to temptation at the chocolate festivals. Roll out a picnic rug and soak up the creative vibes at Jazz in the Wines, or a superstar concert under the stars.

And there’s plenty going on inside as well. Perusing the quaint village stores or imbibing the views from the verandah of your beautiful Radford Park home.

Living local lets you live life large.

Its wide open spaces, beautiful scenery and sense of freedom are givens, but recent major investments in infrastructure have made the Hunter a desirable and realistic option for many.

The new Hunter Expressway is the buzz of the region. It has made this popular tourist region even more accessible, shortening the trip to Newcastle and opening up the area to residents from Sydney to the Central Coast.

As well as all the doorstep markets, concerts, restaurants and cafes, you’re only 90 minutes’ drive from Sydney, an hour from Hornsby, 30 minutes to Newcastle and the beach.

Rapid connectivity doesn’t stop at the express roads. The National Broadband Network (NBN) has already been rolled out across Radford Park as Hunter homes and businesses reap early benefits of high-speed internet technology.

Combined with Radford Park’s spacious yet affordable blocks, it’s brought living and working from here closer than ever.

INTRODUCING RADFORD PARK

“The land size is perfect. We wanted something large but not too big to handle. And, to be honest, we could never

afford anything near that land size in Sydney. It’s quiet, and you can breathe. Houses aren’t butted up against

each other like many smaller lots down here.”

YOU R N EIGH BOU R S

It’s always good to get to know your neighbours. We speak to those who call this place home. Radford Park’s new residents and locals who live and work nearby share the many rewards and insider insights into

this special part of the world.

“We loved the views, the mountains, the fresh air – and the location so close to town is ideal.

Branxton still has that small village feel but is close enough to larger centres. The Hunter

Expressway and the quick drive to the coast, Newcastle and Sydney sealed the deal.”

- Sydneysiders, Kirsty and Craig Duck

The playground of Sydney’s food, wine and golfing connoisseurs, the Hunter Valley’s green hills and wide open spaces are now attracting a new kind of resident.

Its celebrated semillon, shiraz and verdelho may entice the weekend crowds but what is it that draws people here to live?

Sydneysiders, Kirsty and Craig Duck, are in the process of completing their sprawling Radford Park home. They simply can’t wait to move in.

“We wanted out of the rat race that is Sydney. It’s just getting too big, too out of control. We were married in Pokolbin and loved the area. We saw Radford Park and we were sold!”

“Local shop owners recognise us instantly, which certainly makes you feel part of the community. We adore the wine and foodie scene, and the concerts are definitely a huge bonus. Family and friends are already booking rooms with us ahead of time.”

Shirley and Peter George are neighbours further along the hillside. They too, love the sense of community this place fosters. After spending many years in Newcastle, the pair felt a yearn for country life, choosing Radford Park for its elevated position, good size blocks and Branxton’s easy access to the expressway.

“The best thing is the peace and tranquillity of the place, and knowing that in the years ahead Branxton is going places. The expressway is opening up so many opportunities for the area.

It has the chance to be the showpiece of the Hunter.”

People who move here do seem to throw down strong roots. While not a Radford Park resident, Ganga Ma is a well-known face in Branxton.

She runs Branxton’s monthly Sacred Tree Markets, an eclectic artisanal showcase for artists, growers, makers, healers and lovers of all things beautiful.

Describing herself as an energetic healer, soy drinker, and dedicated Facebook fan, Ganga Ma’s passion for conscious consumerism and ‘slow processes’ has her right at home in the village.

“As a mother of two, this is a great place to raise children. We are inspired by living here. There’s a sense of connectedness that you just don’t get in the city.”

“Look at that view,” said Ganga Ma, as we sat, sipping hot tea in the Radford Park show home, gazing towards the mountain ridge. “Doesn’t it make you feel great?”

“The community is so warm, friendly and welcoming to people from all walks of life,” said Shirley and Peter.
