Nightmare on Mount Aconcagua

A. Read the title of the text and look at the pictures. What do you think happened? Listen, read and find out.

Last week a team of eight climbers climbed to the top of Mount Aconcagua

in the Andes. However, while they were climbing down, something terrible happened. The weather changed.

“We were climbing down when I saw a snowstorm coming,” says Jim Thorne, the climb leader. “It’s every climber’s nightmare.”

He wanted to get his team back to base camp quickly but it was very difficult. “Everyone was tired and cold and was walking very slowly. Don’t forget we were carrying backpacks,” says Thorne.

They arrived at base camp two days later. “When I saw base camp, I was very happy. But when I looked back and saw that there were only six of us instead of eight, I couldn’t believe it!” says Thorne.

Unfortunately, Thorne and the others couldn’t go back to find the two missing climbers because the snowstorm was very bad.

“Were they lost? Were they hurt? Were they alive or... dead? I didn’t know. I just sat and cried,” says Thorne.

It was a warm summer’s evening. Sam was looking

for his grandfather’s old violin. He was very excited! He wanted to take it to a second-hand shop to sell

it and get some money. So, he went up to

the attic to find it. The attic was dark and creepy. Sam

was scared but he wanted to find

the violin. He was looking in an old

wardrobe when he heard a strange noise.

It was coming from behind some boxes

near an open window. Sam went near the

boxes and suddenly, he saw two big eyes!

He was frightened and screamed!

As soon as Sam’s mum heard him,

she ran up to the attic. She turned on

the light and they both saw something

amazing. A beautiful white owl was sitting
