The MSRE was approved by the University of North Carolina Board of Governors last November, and recruiting for the first class is underway. The program will begin in August 2012.

“In good times and bad, the commercial real estate industry is one of the key drivers of the economy,” said Dean Steven Ott. “There will always be a need for specially-trained employees to manage the com-plexities of real estate finance, development and construction.

“We’re excited to have the opportunity to expand the Belk College’s real estate curriculum to respond to the needs of the industry and de-velop the next generation of highly-skilled executives and managers.”

Dean Ott, the John Crosland Sr. Distinguished Professor of Real Estate, was the founding director of the Center for Real Estate at UNC Charlotte. Since becoming Dean in January 2011, he has appointed Dr. Dustin Read as his successor. Dr. Read will serve as the faculty director of the MSRE in addition to heading the Center for Real Estate.

The Belk College hopes to recruit an inaugural class of 12-15 students in the MSRE for Fall 2012, building to an enrollment of 15-20 new students each year. Dr. Read expects the class to be a mix of part-time and full-time students, including both recent graduates looking to break into the industry and real estate professionals who aspire to move into management.

Students in the MSRE will take classes in various components of commercial real estate, including law and land use policy, finance and investment, construction management and financial management. The MSRE curriculum was developed in consultation

with the Real Estate Advisory Board, a group of industry lead-ers who also helped raise $4.4 million to support expansion of the real estate program at UNC Charlotte.

Outside the classroom, students will participate in community-service projects that will emphasize the social and environmental implications of real estate and promote sustainable practices in the industry. Students may also participate in professional internships to gain experience in the industry for those in career transition.

“Our students will have a variety of internship and job prospects,” Dr. Read said. “Our advisory board members have pledged their sup-port of our students’ professional and career development.”

The MSRE will be unique in the state and one of a handful of master’s-level programs in real estate in the Southeast. The top-ranked programs nationally include Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Pennsylvania, University of Wisconsin-Madison and University of California-Berkeley.

“We’re optimistic about launching the program and the opportuni-ties it will present, both for the students and the industry,” Dean Ott said. “We’re confident that the combination of a top-notch faculty, our location in Charlotte and the steadfast support of industry leaders will be very attractive to prospective students.”

UNC Charlotte and the Charlotte School of Law have signed an agreement establishing a dual JD/MBA program that will prepare students for careers in law and management and provide them with the skill sets to meet the challenges of a modern corporate environment. The new program will launch in Fall 2012.

The dual degree will allow students to earn a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from the Belk College of Business at UNC Charlotte and a Juris Doctor ( JD) degree from Charlotte Law in eight semesters. Pursued independently, a student would need 10 semesters to complete both degrees.

“The practice of law has become more entwined with the business world, and tomorrow’s leaders will require a deep understanding of both environments,” said Dennis Stone, president of Charlotte School of Law. “This dual-degree program provides an opportunity for our students to broaden their perspectives through access to one of the leading MBA programs in the country. It has

also been one of the most-requested programs from our students.”

Full-time students have the option of spending their first year at either Charlotte School of Law or UNC Charlotte. Following that, they will spend their entire second or third year at the other institution before splitting their time at both schools to complete the program. Each school will grant nine credits for courses taken at the other school.

The skill set that comes with an MBA can enhance those skills essential to a legal career, such as preparing an individual for positions within corporate development, mergers and acquisitions, and senior-level strategic development positions. It also increases a graduate’s options, prospects and marketability in an economic downturn by providing opportunities for JD/MBA professionals to move in several different fields.

“We are very proud of the MBA

program here at UNC Charlotte and we believe that through its recent awarding of full accreditation by the American Bar Association, the Charlotte School of Law is an ideal partner,” said UNC Charlotte Chancellor Philip L. Dubois. “For the first time ever, UNC Charlotte students will have the opportunity to achieve law degrees while matriculating at the University.”

Students participating in the dual JD/MBA program must apply separately to both schools and can begin the program at either institution. In addition, students must complete prerequisites for each institution, including taking both the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) and Law School Admission Test (LSAT) prior to the application process. The Belk College has received a $250,000 grant from The Belk Foundation to support the creation of a comprehensive professional-development program for undergraduate business students.

The Belk Foundation gift, along with a $50,000 donation from alumnus Mark Doughton ’80 and his wife Susan, will provide startup funding for the Student Center for Professional Development (SCPD).

“Employers are telling many business schools that while graduates have a solid understanding of business concepts, they often lack the practical professional knowledge and experiences they need to be successful in the workplace,” said Dean Steven

Ott. “The SCPD will allow the Belk College to provide our students with a broad yet individualized series of career development programs that will give them an advantage in the job market and enhance their value to their employer.”

The Belk Foundation, a private family foundation, refined its mission in 2010 to focus on increasing the number of students who achieve at grade level and graduate high school on time, with an intentional path forward.

The SPDC launched with a pilot program in January 2012, and bcc: will provide additional coverage of this exciting new initiative in an upcoming issue.

Four business leaders with a variety of professional and community-service experience have joined the Belk College Board of Advisors.

Marcia J. Avedon is senior vice president, human resources and communications for Ingersoll Rand, the global diversified industrial and technology company. She holds a M.Phil. and a Ph.D. from

George Washington University, and a B.A. in psychology from UNC Wilmington. She serves on the board of directors for the United Way of Central Carolinas.

Mark Copeland is the office managing partner for the Charlotte office of Ernst & Young and the leader of the Carolinas’ Transaction Advisory Services. A CPA in the State of North Carolina, he is a graduate of East Carolina University. Mr. Copeland serves as president for the board of directors for the Charlotte Chapter of JRDF.

Richard Maltsbarger was named senior vice president of strategy for Lowe’s in January 2011, having previously held leadership positions in strategic planning, research and customer analytics. He earned master’s and bachelor’s degrees from the University of Missouri and an MBA from Washington University in St. Louis.  He currently serves on the national advisory board for Students in Free Enterprise.

Brian T. Marley has served as executive vice president and chief financial officer for Belk, Inc. since 2000.  He is a graduate of UNC Chapel Hill. Mr. Marley has held board and leadership positions in many charitable and service organizations including United Way of Central Carolinas, United Family Services, N.C. Zoological Park, N.C. Sports Development Commission and the Charlotte Chamber.

In June 2011, MBA student Teresa Hoelle joined 23 fellow Belk College graduate students for an education abroad course in Germany. She provided this remembrance of the course for bcc:.

I chose to participate in this unique summer abroad program to enhance my MBA concentrations in global business and marketing, and also to have an opportunity to brush up on my German language skills (I had lived and studied in Germany for three years previously).

The course, “Doing Business in Germany,” was developed in partnership between the Belk College of Business and the University of Mannheim. During our week-long tour of German cities and companies, our professor, Dr. James Nebus, led us through an analysis and discussions of the history and market strategies of Germany – the largest economy in Europe and the fourth largest in the world.

Touring the world-class BMW factory outside of Munich provided an amazing opportunity to conceptualize their implementation of the Just-In-Time ( JIT) manufacturing processes. It was impressive to see the automation and green technologies integrated throughout the plant.

Frankfurt was also an amazing stop. Through tours and one-on-one discussions with leaders at the Frankfurt Boerse (stock exchange) and the European Central Bank, we gained personal insight into the stable economic policies and globally competitive manufacturing industries, as well as the development of the Euro currency and the delicate balance of the Franco-German relations – especially relevant

even today, given the Euro zone issues Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Nicholas Sarkozy have been tackling.

Traveling to Germany provided an opportunity for me to gain a better grasp of global economic forces and global competitiveness – and I truly appreciate now more than ever Germany’s ability to recover from its challenging economic past to lead on the global economic stage. I also was able to see firsthand how German businesses are confronting issues related to promoting women in executive leadership, and developing a more collaborative corporate culture. Viewing such issues from a different perspective provided me insights into the challenges I, too, will be navigating as an executive leader in the U.S. Given my personal interest in the gender quotas that the German government is considering imposing on its top 30 publicly traded companies, Dr. Nebus supported my desire to explore this topic further for my research paper.

In addition to the company tours and economic insights, I truly enjoyed spending time with my classmates, some of whom were traveling abroad for the first time. Riding trains, being immersed in another language and way of life – sometimes those are the greatest lessons we all learn from travel. I also returned with several close friends as a result of this trip – a treasure I will continue to carry with me for years to come.

Each summer, the Belk College sponsors international study tours for graduate students. In the past, students have traveled to Argentina, Dubai, Eastern Europe and Russia, among other locations. MBA student Leticia Foster participated in Dr. Dustin Read’s Real Estate course in Malaysia last summer and provided this inside look into a young and developing country.

As a Belk College MBA student with a concentration in marketing, I decided to expand my business acumen beyond my field of study by participating in this course. Real estate, particularly commercial real estate, always piqued my interest. In addition, I figured this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet with notable companies across the globe.  Anyone can go abroad as a tourist, but by studying abroad you get additional insight into local companies and business customs.

Malaysia was a welcoming country. We met with executives at PwC, Sime Darby, Cagamas, CB Richard Ellis, JPPH, and the U.S. Department of Commerce. The business presentations were thorough and gave a detailed picture on Malaysia’s Vision 2020 and ETP programs. As visitors, we could see that the country is making great progress with its infrastructure while maintaining its natural resources. In addition, we participated in day tours of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s capital as well as its financial and commercial center; Malacca, a his-torical site that was an access point for traders between China and India; Putrajaya, a planned city that contains the federal administration buildings for the country; and Selangor, home

of the world’s largest pewter company. The food, of course, was yet another key experience from this trip. Every dish was rich in flavor and indigenous spices. Lastly, I must say that I could not have stud-ied with a better group. We came from various academic and professional backgrounds, which

led to dynamic Q&A sessions that I believe sur-prised some of our presenters! Study abroad is an educational and personal experience I wish every student could participate in. I’m grateful to the Belk College for providing these opportunities to broaden our perspectives.

UNC Charlotte has partnered with Xiamen University in China to accept students into the Master of Science in Mathematical Finance program at UNC Charlotte.

Eleven students from Xiamen University enrolled in the Mathematical Finance program in Fall 2011. One additional student is enrolled the Master of Accountancy program in the Belk College of Business. Eventually, the student cohort from Xiamen should number 25 to 30 per year.

The students spent the previous year in a preparatory program at Xiamen studying economics, finance, mathematics and English. They should complete their UNC Charlotte program in one calendar year, and many will seek internships when they complete their studies.

“Xiamen is one of the top universities in China,” said Dr. Richard M. Conboy, director of global business programs in the Belk College.“These students were selected for their exceptional math skills and their interest in quantitative finance. I expect them to perform very well in our graduate programs.”

Xiamen University, located in Fujian province, is currently ranked 13th among top universities in the People’s Republic of China.

The M.S. in Mathematical Finance at UNC Charlotte is an interdisciplinary program, drawing from faculty in the Department of Mathematics in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences and the Department of Economics and Department of Finance in the Belk College of Business.

The official opening of UNC Charlotte’s new Center City campus last fall marked the beginning of a significant new chapter for several of the Belk College’s graduate programs and the Center for Real Estate.

Located on the corner of Ninth and Brevard Streets in the heart of uptown Charlotte, UNC Charlotte Center City is now home to the Master of Accountancy, M.S. in Mathematical Finance and the MBA (which was ranked in the top tier of part-time programs nationwide last year in U.S. News & World Report). When the new M.S. in Real Estate program enrolls its first class next fall, it too will be housed at the Center City campus.

Staff of the Graduate Programs and the Center for Real Estate have relocated their offices to the seventh floor of the 11-story building, offering more convenience to current and prospective students seeking admissions and career services advice.

“It’s exciting to see our students benefitting from our proximity to uptown Charlotte,” says Robin Boswell, director of graduate student career development. “The Graduate Student Services Office is more accessible to many of our working-professional students, and we’ve definitely seen an increase in traffic.”

More than 750 students took classes at the Center City campus during the fall semester, creating a vibrant learning environment. While the majority of evening courses are offered by the Belk College, several other colleges are also establishing a presence at Center City, including Arts + Architecture, Education, Liberal Arts & Sciences and Health and Human Services.

Outside the classroom, the Belk College’s graduate students take advantage of the various amenities the new building offers, including an on-site café, bookstore, gallery, state-of-the-art computer labs, and a 300-seat auditorium for lectures and performances. The Belk College plans to host a variety of programs at UNC Charlotte Center City, including networking socials, the Babson Capital/UNC Charlotte Economic Forecast and the NEXT speakers series, to bring alumni and community members to the new space.

“Our presence in the new Center City campus signals the Belk College’s commitment to Charlotte’s working professionals and to the economic development of the region,” says Dr. Christie Amato, associate dean of graduate programs. “It is our vision that UNC Charlotte Center City will serve as a business hub, connecting the business community to our students, faculty and alumni.”

It’s easy to get Dr. Howard Godfrey to talk, but it’s almost impossible to get him to talk about himself.

Ask him about the Belk College’s strong reputation among accounting industry recruiters, and he’ll demur in favor of his faculty colleagues. Inquire about the UNC Charlotte Tax Team’s long string of successes in national competitions, and he’ll give all the credit to the students.

But if you ask Belk College accounting alumni who they remember well, and which faculty members they’ve kept in touch with after graduation, Dr. Godfrey is invariably near the top of their lists. With a genuine interest in students, loyalty to UNC Charlotte, and a passion for the accounting profession, he has become a genuine Belk College institution.

It’s no surprise, then, that the selection committee for the Bank of America Teaching Award chose Dr. Godfrey for the university’s highest teaching honor last fall. In typical Godfrey fashion, he simply says, “It’s been an uplifting period for me.”

Dr. Godfrey joined the UNC Charlotte faculty in 1975. He was the first business faculty member to hold a Ph.D. in Accounting, and the first CPA in Charlotte with a doctoral degree.

“It was an exciting time,” Dr. Godfrey remembers of the early years. “Charlotte and the university were growing fast. We were all thrilled to be here, and we built a high-quality, rigorous program.”

Dr. Godfrey has fond memories of faculty members from that era, including Stephen Jolly, Bob Guinn, Sak Bhamornsiri, Ed Malmgren and department chair Tom Turner.

“I can’t say enough about what that faculty did for students in those early years,” he said. “We wanted a thriving program, as good as you’d find anywhere.” Dr. Godfrey and his colleagues lobbied to add a Beta Alpha Psi chapter, coached tax teams that were ranked among the top in the nation, and developed a strong industry outreach program that continues to this day.

More recently, Dr. Godfrey has developed a deep affinity for teaching in the Belk College’s global programs, calling it “a wonderful experience.” He has participated in the Executive MBA program in Taiwan six times and in Hong Kong twice.

Dr. Godfrey and his wife, Willa, have two sons and two grandsons. “We’ve been blessed,” he said, “and I can’t imagine wanting to be a professor in an accounting program anywhere else.”

“I graduated from UNC Charlotte with a B.S. in Accounting in 1982. Dr. Godfrey was my professor in at least two tax classes. Nearly 30 years later, I still recall the passion and dedication he demonstrated in working with students in the classroom and when visiting his office. I am now a CPA and a senior leader in Washington, D.C. serving in the federal government. What an impres-sion he left on me--I carry that same passion for excellence in my work. Congratulations, Dr. Godfrey!!”

Wilmer J. (Hardy) Graham ’82, CPAManager, Corporate Planning and Performance Management, Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation

“Dr. Godfrey made cost accounting make sense. Of all the accounting courses I took, and I took quite a few, cost accounting made the most sense due to the common sensi-cal approach that Dr. Godfrey used. He was always even-tempered, knew what he was talking about, and laid it all out so that it was understood. I don’t remember all of my professors from so long ago, but I do remember Dr. Godfrey.”

Leslie (Ballard) Rowley Knutsen ’91Business Education Teacher, Clover High School

“Howard Godfrey was knowledgeable of the business world. He brought real-world business situations into the classroom while teaching the fundamentals of tax. You could really tell he cared about the students and went the extra mile to assure their success. The Belk College of Business is successful today because of dedicated professors like Howard Godfrey.”

Janet Stoner ’80Finance Director, Town of Huntersville, N.C.

Student leadership led W. Noah Reynolds ’02 on a path of professional and personal fulfillment.

While studying for a second bachelor’s degree in accounting at UNC Charlotte, Noah was elected vice president of operations for Beta Alpha Psi, the national accounting honor society. He also was one of four students to represent the Belk College in the Deloitte

National Tax Competition, achieving Honorable Mention status.Following a tax internship with Cherry, Bekaert & Holland, Noah

worked full-time in audit and tax and earned his CPA designation in 2003. In 2007, he earned an MBA from Wake Forest University. Prior to attending UNC Charlotte, Noah earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Princeton University.

Noah has made an endowed gift to the Belk College of Business in support of professional development activities for students, acknowledging his experience in the Belk College as inspiration for the gift. “My experiences with the Tax Challenge Competition, Beta Alpha Psi, the Accounting Department, and the Belk College of Business launched a career in public accounting and provided a firm foundation upon which all I have accomplished has been built,” he says. “It is an honor and a privilege to give back to UNC Charlotte.”

Noah currently provides real estate and investment management services for his family office and is also an adjunct instructor of entrepreneurship at UNC Greensboro.

CREW Charlotte, a professional organization for women in real estate, has endowed a scholarship at UNC Charlotte. The group recently fulfilled its $25,000 pledge in four years – one year ahead of schedule.

Funded with proceeds from its annual Casino Night, the CREW Charlotte scholarship supports female students studying business and commercial real estate. Last year’s Casino Night event provided a donation of $8,600 to the UNC Charlotte Foundation.

Rebecca Breffeilh, who is pursuing dual master’s degrees in Business and Architecture, and Alisha Homan, a student in the M.S. in Economics program, were this year’s CREW scholarship recipients.

“CREW Charlotte has been a great supporter of the Belk College of Business and UNC Charlotte, and their scholarship provides a tremendous opportunity for our students,” said Melissa Shelton, director of development. “We’re honored to be the recipient of their generous philanthropy.”

Mark Doughton ’80 and his wife Susan understand the value of higher education, but also realize that today’s undergraduate business students may need more than classroom instruction. In an effort to help Belk College students be fully prepared for gainful employment after graduation, Mark and Susan have made a generous lead gift to support the creation of the Student Center for Professional Development (SCPD).

“We feel strongly that Belk College students will benefit greatly from the resources and services provided by the Center,” Mark said. “These opportunities will give them a competitive edge in today’s work place.”

As a student, Mark was active with Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He remains very supportive of the University and serves on the UNC Charlotte Foundation Board and the Athletics Foundation. A retired logistics and supply chain management executive, Mark is a partner at Doughton and Rodgman, Inc., a career development company providing services for students and recent college graduates.

Students from the undergraduate program in Risk Management & Insurance pose with Belk College officials and representatives from the program's corporate partners. Each year, the North Carolina Surplus Lines Association provides generous financial support for a group of RMI students to travel to London, England, to meet with industry officials and gain a global perspective. During the trip, Lloyd's of London arranges special educational experiences for the students.

Page 18: Belk College Connects, Winter 2012

It’s been nearly 25 years since Bob Qutub ’88 graduated from the Belk College of Business with an accounting degree, but in some ways he’s never really left.

Bob, now 50, still fondly remembers professors like Bob Guinn, Ed Malmgren, Howard Godfrey and so many others, and what they taught him. He regales listeners with the story of how he and some fellow accounting majors covered the lights that illuminate the Belk Tower with red transparent paper so it glowed red – and still laments that it was architecture students who “got the glory.” He also recalls with pride the Southeastern regional conference he co-chaired as vice president of Beta Alpha Psi, the national accounting and finance fraternity, which attracted more than 300 participants.

Today, Bob is senior vice president and chief financial officer for Consumer & Small Business Banking and Home Loans at Bank of America, where he has worked since 1994 and where he also serves as vice chair for the Corporation’s Global Diversity and Inclusion Council.

Bob’s praise of UNC Charlotte goes beyond simple reminiscences, however. He expresses his appreciation of what he learned at the university not only with financial contributions, but by also donating his time and expertise. He was recently re-appointed chair of the Belk College Board of Advisors and sits on the UNC Charlotte Founda-tion Board. Previously, he served as chair of the Accounting Advisory Board and was a member of the UNC Charlotte Alumni Board.

Although he talks about pranks and the fun he had as a student, there was also very much an air of seriousness about Bob’s time at UNC Charlotte. He wasn’t a typical student. He had joined the U.S. Marine Corps after an unsuccessful first attempt at college in Oregon and served three years. After he mustered out and enrolled at UNC Charlotte, he was “on a mission,” he said. “I kept my focus away from distractions, and on my studies.”

It’s the combination of focus and fun that Bob says made his UNC Charlotte years “a very good experience. There was support and cama-raderie; it was a comforting environment, full of opportunities that let us excel and do well.”

At UNC Charlotte, to his surprise Bob discovered that he had tal-ent in accounting and that it was a field with good jobs available. He honed in on taking the CPA exam. “You can imagine the grief I got from my Marine buddies when I majored in accounting,” he says. “But it was a skill I was good at, and what I did around it was fun.”

After Bob graduated it was a fellow 49er, Joe Price, who gave him his first accounting job in audit at Price Waterhouse (PwC). During this time, Bob created a mock audit for Dr. Guinn so he could share his real-world experience with students and they could learn more about the audit process and documentation.

NCNB (now Bank of America) was Bob’s sole client at PwC, and the bank asked him to join its staff in 1994. “It’s been a wild ride ever since,” he says.

During Bob’s 18-year tenure at the bank, he has worked for a wide variety of its Finance divisions, supporting divisions like Global Sales and Trading, the Global Corporate & Investment Bank, and Global Technology, Service & Fulfillment. These jobs have included assign-

from it. In this econ-omy and this world, you must demonstrate professional agility.”

There’s more to Bob than accounting. He still rides a motorcycle – as he has since he was 15 – but now it’s a Harley Davidson. He’s an avid runner who has competed in three Ironman competitions. He and his wife Katie have a son Colman, who is nearly 2, and he also has two adult daughters, Holly and Paige, who live in Concord.

“My years at UNC Charlotte helped me be what I am today – I got so much out of it,” he says. “It was a community, a family. It was very collegial and more important, it helped shape me for where I am today. It’s why I give back.”

ments in London, Chicago, San Francisco and New York (twice), as well as travels to Korea, India, Brazil, Hong Kong and Singapore. He returned to Charlotte in July 2011 after being based in New York for nearly three years.

“I gained different perspectives on how the company runs,” Bob says about his career progression. “And, I learned that sometimes what I did not think were opportunities often turned out to be just that. These positions always set me up to be better at my next assignment.”

Bob’s first management job came in 1995, when was transferred to London to serve as financial controller for the bank’s London opera-tions. “There, I learned that if you didn’t listen to your team or under-stand their issues and culture, retention becomes an issue and you may be left with no one to do the work but you.”

Times have changed since Bob attended UNC Charlotte, but the advice he has for today’s students – regardless of their major – is timeless.

“There will always be change – it’s inevitable,” he says. “Your career will be defined by how you react to it: you can either embrace it or run

Lindsay Baran ‘10 (Ph.D.) joins Kent State faculty

Lindsay Baran, a 2010 graduate of the Belk College’s Ph.D. in Business Administration

program, has joined Kent State University in Ohio in a tenure-track position in the Department of Finance.

Lindsay spent the 2010-11 academic year as a visiting faculty member in the Belk College, teaching courses in financial management, cor-porate finance, and investments, while her hus-band Ben finished his Ph.D. in Organizational Science at UNC Charlotte. Ben joined the Management faculty at Northern Kentucky University this fall. The couple has settled in Hudson, Ohio, with daughter Adelaide (3),

and son Damien (born last May). “I came to the Ph.D. program from a very

non-traditional route,” Lindsay recalled.” I got my undergraduate degree in math from Vil-lanova and then joined AmeriCorps, so I spent two years as a full-time volunteer teaching el-ementary school. I got my teaching certificate and moved to Charlotte to teach in CMS.”

Lindsay was in the first Ph.D. cohort in the Belk College and earned a prestigious TIAA-CREF award that supported her first year of study. During the dissertation stage, Lindsay earned an award from the Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO), a national organization dedicated to the advancement and education of women. Lindsay earned a $15,000 scholarship through the PEO’s

annual Scholars Award competition for female doctoral students.

Lindsay also earned high praise for her research while in the Ph.D. program. The first essay of her dissertation, “The Cost of Capital in S&P 500 Index Changes,” has been accepted for publication in Financial Manage-ment. She also has published articles in the Journal of Banking and Finance and in Review of Future Markets.

While finance Ph.D.s have many options, Lindsay has elected to pursue a career in higher education. “I’ve always liked working with and interacting with students,” she said. “I knew I wanted that to be a part of my job as I moved forward.”

bcc: MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

Dear Alumni and Friends of the Belk College,

I am writing this on the one-year anniversary of my appointment as Dean of the Belk College. As I look back on 2011, I am very proud of what we have accomplished.

I’ve had the good fortune to assemble a very talented team of associate deans, department chairs and senior administrative staff. Together, we have crafted a vision for the Belk College as an urban research business school: one that is responsive to the needs of the business community, provides top-quality talent to the workforce, supports economic development in the Charlotte region and beyond, and disseminates research that is relevant to business leaders. We are making rapid and significant progress on all of these fronts.

We are supported in these efforts by a dedicated and stalwart Board of Advisors. I am very grateful to Cynthia Carlson, our immediate past board chair, for her guidance and devoted service to the Belk College. I’m also pleased to welcome back Bob Qutub to the chair’s position, which he reluctantly gave up a few years ago when he took a long-term work assignment in New York. I hope you enjoyed reading the profile of Bob in this issue of bcc:. He is a fine example of how alumni can maintain a lifelong relationship with the Belk College.

One of the most exciting developments this year is the generous grant from The Belk Foundation which supports the creation of a Student Center for Professional Development for undergraduates (you can read about that gift on p. 5). We are very proud to share the name of one of the most prominent retail companies in the country and a family that has provided vision and philanthropy to this region for three generations. Their support means a great deal to all of us in the Belk College.

Looking ahead, a major goal for 2012 is to strengthen our ties to the college’s 22,000 alumni. To support this effort, we are adding an Alumni & Community Engagement Manager to our staff to develop a comprehensive plan for alumni programming, communications and relationship-building. This is the first college-based position at UNC Charlotte exclusively focused on alumni relations. We look forward to working with our Alumni Advisory Council and the alumni corps to learn more about how we can best serve our graduates and provide opportunities to stay connected with fellow alumni, faculty and students.

Thank you for your support of the Belk College over the past year. I wish each of you a happy and successful 2012.
