She is an accomplished philanthropist with a background in corporate finance and investment banking. Former Vice President at Cowen & Company, Mrs. Sperling lends her expertise to universities, independent schools, and public schools. She serves on BELL’s Development, Program, and Governance Committees. Paula is a private wealth advisor and leads Goldman Sachs' New York Private Wealth Management team. She joined Goldman Sachs in 2000 and was named managing director in 2010. Prior to joining the firm, Paula worked at Chase Manhattan Bank for eight years. Paula earned a B.A. in Comparative Area Studies, Political Science and Spanish from Duke University in 1992 and an M.B.A. from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1999. She and her husband have two children and live in New York. President of J. Nicholas Arthur, one of the nation’s leading executive search firms, Nick contributes a wealth of business experience to BELL. He leads major searches for executives within BELL, chairs BELL’s Audit Committee, and serves on the Development and Audit Committees. As the managing partner of Bulger Partners, Chris provides investment banking and strategy consulting to innovative, technology- focused enterprises. He has been involved in over 100 transactions around the globe for clients such as IBM, Cognizant Technology Solutions, Knight Securities, Infosys and e*Trade. Chris has also worked as a venture capitalist, management consultant and systems engineer. He holds a BS in Engineering from Boston University and an MBA from Yale University. Chris serves on the Development Committee. Dr. Gueye is the Chief Executive Officer of BELL. She began her career at BELL in 1998 and has held a range of positions from Program Manager to Chief Operating Officer, Field Operations. Through her leadership, BELL’s programs and evaluation methods have become nationally recognized as best practices in expanded learning time programs. She holds a B.A. in Psychology and a Ph.D. in Educational Research, Evaluation and Measurement from Boston College. Dr. Gueye sits on the Governance Committee. As managing partner of GPS Risk Management Advisors, Gene provides risk management consulting services to financial institutions. He is retired from Deutsche Bank, where he served as a Managing Director in the firm's Corporate Banking & Securities Division. Gene is also founder and past chairman of the International Association of Credit Portfolio Managers, and a past president of the New York Chapter of the Risk Management Association. He holds a B.A. from Davidson College and a Ph.D. in economics from Duke University. He serves on BELL's Development, Finance, and Nominating Committees. Ms. Kelley is an experienced hedge fund manager and economist. She serves on the board of the Bedford-Stuyvesant “I Have a Dream” Program and the Iris House, a center for women and children. She holds a B.A. in mathematics from Smith College and a general course diploma from the London School of Economics. Ms. Kelley serves on the Development and Audit Committees. Mr. Kim brings to BELL a wealth of experience growing educational organizations. Founder and Chairman of The District Management Council, he was President of Kaplan Learning Services and a founder and CEO of Chancellor Beacon Academies. Mr. Kim serves on the Strategy Committee. Mr. Manekin currently sits as regional president and national board member of the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties. He also works with civic organizations including Teach for America and the Open Society Institute. Former Chief Operating Officer of Baltimore City Public Schools, Mr. Manekin brings substantial experience in education and civic leadership to BELL’s board of directors. Mr. Manekin serves on the Strategy Committee.

Soren is the Vice-Chair of BELL’s governing Board of Directors and is a member of the Operating Committee at Thomas H. Lee Partners. Prior to joining THL, Mr. Oberg worked at Morgan Stanley in the Merchant Banking Division and the Global Strategist’s office at Cowen & Company. He serves on the board of several private companies and is a Founding Board Member of the Canada Wide Virtual Science Fair. Soren also chairs the Strategy Committee. Chair Emeritus of BELL’s board, Prof. Ogletree is professor of law at Harvard Law School and founder of the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice. A highly-esteemed legal scholar, civil rights lawyer, and leader, Prof. Ogletree is deeply committed to serving public schools and institutes of higher education. Mr. Piela brings a wealth of business and financial experience to BELL's board of directors. He previously served as Senior Vice President of FCCI Insurance Group's Southeast region, responsible for developing and executing core growth, expansion and profit strategies. He sits on BELL's governance and audit committees and oversees fiscal management as chair of the finance committee. Mr. Piela's work with BELL dates back to 1994. Justin, who joined Warburg Pincus in 2000, leads the firm's West Coast office and focuses on media, internet, and information investments. Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Sadrian worked at JP Morgan in their investment banking and private equity groups. He is a director of A Place for Mom, Centrum.cz, Endurance International, The Gordian Group, MultiView, OnTargetJobs, Seamless and Service Repair Solutions. In addition, Mr. Sadrian is also a Vice Chair of Friends of Hudson River Park. Mr. Sadrian received a B.A. from Dartmouth College and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. Laura is a champion of education and youth development. Prior to leading the Samberg Family Foundation, her prior experience includes more than twenty years conducting and managing research and policy work on education and children's health and issues in the corporate and non-profit sectors, at the Institute of Educational Leadership, R.O.W. Sciences, and the American Council on Education. Laura is also on the boards of College Summit, Harlem Children's Zone, the Jewish Outreach Institute, and Project HEALTH. She has a B.A. in History from Cornell University and a M.A. in Education from Stanford University. Garrett brings to BELL a combination of experience in management and education. As a managing director at the District Management Council (DMC), Garrett works closely with district leadership teams to implement best practices and drive continuous improvement. Prior to joining DMC, he worked at Bain & Company across a wide variety of industries and practice areas, including marketing & growth strategy, strategic planning, and change management. Dr. Smith is a pediatric hospitalist and researcher whose clinical and academic work has focused on child health disparities and the impact of public policy on child well-being. Dr. Smith formerly served as the medical director and interim commissioner for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, where she provided senior clinical leadership. Prior to joining DPH, she served as the medical director of Inpatient Pediatrics and the Medical-Legal Partnership at Boston Medical Center. Dr. Smith is chair of the program committee. She is also on the boards of Crittenton Women's Union and Child Trends.
