The Cold War• Containment = the goal the U.S. had to keep

communism in Russia and prevent it from spreading to other areas.

• Deterrence = the practice of preventing countries from acting a certain way, by “flexing” a nuclear weapon.

• Domino Theory = the belief that if one country became communist then all the countries around it would follow, and become communist as well.

Page 11: Bell-Ringer How do you think the relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union (Russia) changes after WWII? What do you know about the Cold.

The Cold War• “Iron Curtain” speech = Britain and the U.S. had been very

thankful for the USSR’s help in WWII. However, Churchill gave this speech in Missouri after the war ended, and basically called out the Soviets. He said that an “iron curtain” was moving across Europe. – After this speech, people began to be afraid of communism and the

USSR.

• Truman Doctrine = In 1947, Harry S. Truman said the U.S. would provide help to any country that fell victim to authoritarian regimes.

• Marshall Plan = the U.S. gave 13 billion dollars to help rebuild Europe after WWII.

The Cold War• North Atlantic Treaty Organization = A group of 28

countries who formed a political and military alliance after WWII.

• They are “committed to democracy and peaceful resolutions to disputes”. They also trade with each other.

• Warsaw Pact = Similar to NATO, but this was an alliance of the communist countries across the world.

The Cold War• Military-industrial complex: Basically when

politicians, companies, and the military have an alliance that allows them to make a lot of money off of each other.

The Cold War• After WWII the Allies divided Germany up between them.

They had a different “zone” for every country.

• Berlin, the capital, was in the Soviet “zone” but they also divided the city between the four Allies.

• In 1948 the USSR decided they wanted all of Berlin and cut off all paths into the city.

• The U.S. spent the next year flying supplies into the city so the people would not starve.

• This was called the Berlin Airlift.

The Cold War• Suez Crisis: Happened on October 29, 1956.

• Egypt’s leader nationalized the Suez Canal.

• This made Israel extremely angry, so they sent troops to the area. Britain and France sent troops to back them up, and the Soviets were ready to fight on Egypt’s side.

• The U.S. was angry with both sides, and eventually the conflict ended in 1957.
