Why does it MATTER????• Matter- anything that has volume and mass.

• EVERYTHING that surrounds you is composed of matter!

• There are 4 States of matter

What makes up matter?

11

All matter is made up of elements. Elements are made up of atoms. Atoms are made up of protons, neutrons and electrons.

A few Definitions…Matter elements atoms particles (protons, neutrons, and electrons)

How do we organize Elements?

• There are 92 elements that occur naturally• Other elements have been produced in labs.

Each element is given a chemical symbol

ex: H=hydrogen, Cu=copper

Elements are classified and arranged according to their chemical properties

Elements are made up of atoms…..Let’s take a closer look!

Made up of protons and

neutrons

A particle with approximately the same mass as a

proton

A particle with a mass and a POSITIVE charge

A tiny particle with little mass and a NEGATIVE charge

Atomic Mass(sum of protons AND neutrons)

Atomic Number(number of protons OR electrons in an atom’s nucleus)

Why don’t we include electrons in the atomic

mass?

Round this number when determining # of

neutrons

The Periodic Table of Elements

***Elements are arranged in columns and rows

Page 22: Bell Work 8/25/14 Number your paper from 1 to 5. See if you can determine what the following magnified photos are. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Materials: -PRIDE Card.

Columns• The vertical (up and down)

columns of the periodic table are called groups or families.

• Elements in the same group or family have similar characteristics or properties.

Page 23: Bell Work 8/25/14 Number your paper from 1 to 5. See if you can determine what the following magnified photos are. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Materials: -PRIDE Card.

Label each column on your Periodic Table

Rows• The horizontal rows of the periodic table are

called periods. • Elements in a period are NOT alike in

properties.
