BELL WORK (Buff Binder): Copy the bolded words and write the term that it describes: 1.Response to gravity = __________ 2.Response to touch = __________ 3.Response to water = __________ 4.Response to light = __________ 5.Cells that move water = __________ 6.Cells that move food = __________ gravitropism thigmotropism hydrotropism phototropism xylem phloem Set up todays page for notes Page: 68 Date: Title: Photosynthesis & Cellular Respiration Essential Question: How are photosynthesis and cellular respiration related? Yes, Cornell notes!! How is energy transformed in living things? Energy: the ability to do work Most energy comes from the sun in the form of light. Unused energy leaves the Earth in the form of heat. PHOTOSYNTHESIS: the process by which some plants produce food using sunlight For photosynthesis, plants need three REACTANTS: 1. sunlight (energy) 2. water 3. carbon dioxide After photosynthesis, the plant has two PRODUCTS: 1.glucose (used as food) 2.oxygen (released through the leaves) SUNLIGHT The equation of photosynthesis is: 6 CO H 2 O + sunlight C 6 H O 2 carbon dioxide + water + energy glucose + oxygen Nowdraw the equation in pictures! Chloroplasts: organelle where photosynthesis occurs Chlorophyll: inside chloroplasts; makes plants green How do animals get energy? Cellular respiration: the process that releases energy (ATP) by breaking down glucose occurs in the mitochondria of plant and animal cells makes 36 ATP molecules Mitochondria (Adenosine triphosphate) ATP: how cells store and release energy stored in the bonds between elements Talk to your partner: If humans do not make our own food by photosynthesis, how do we get the nutrients to perform cellular respiration? The equation for cellular respiration is: 6 O 2 + C 6 H 12 O 6 6 CO H 2 O + Energy oxygen + glucose carbon dioxide + water + ATP Nowdraw the equation in pictures! Debrief/Summary: Explain the relationship between cellular respiration and photosynthesis.
