Two rounds to go - and our man on the inside indicates that it’s very
tight at the top!
With double points next week an exciting conclusion is in store,
especially with so many hard-to-pick games this week: Eagles/Tigers &
Lions/Cats might just be a final four preview while Pies/Crows &
Dogs/Giants will have a big say in the lower half of the 8.
Looking for an upset that can give you an edge? Ignore the Tassie
Kangas form last week, no one likes playing the Cats at home while the
Blues & Saints just might provide the season’s first draw on “neutral”
ground at the ‘G.
Good tipping!
As we move towards the 2019-20 Sailing Season, I’m sure all Skippers
are thinking
WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO GET READY FOR THIS
SEASON
I’ve come up with a few ideas to get you started and there will be many
more which you can forward on to me.
Do I need to slip my boat: Make a booking NOW (Slip has been empty
of late)
Boat been sitting idle over winter: Does it need battery charge, service.
Forgotten to have that sail repair done: Book it now before it gets busy
Boat needs a check over: Halyards, blocks and winches need service
Checked my Insurance is up to date
Check EPIRB is in current registration
As a reminder boats planning on doing Cat 5 -7 races need to complete
an Equipment Audit Form and submit prior to your entry being
accepted.
It is very straight forward, Cats 5-7 are a SELF AUDIT.
If you require any advice or help, give me a call.
Cat 4 or higher require an accredited Safety and Equipment Auditor to
complete your audit.
Generally, this takes 1 – 1.5 hrs to complete. Please do not leave till the
last moment, there are a lot of boats to be done and BYC only have 2
Auditors available.
We all have a Crew. Get them involved in helping you. They do need to
know where your equipment is stored and more importantly, HOW TO
USE.
Whilst, on the subject of Crew Members, we all need to be aware of the
benefits and importance of being a Member of an Australian Sailing
affiliated Club like BYC.
What are the benefits of being a Member at BYC?
Sense of belonging, that’s My Club
Membership Fee helps to cover the cost of running Your Club

publication of the 2019-2020 Communication to Members is now

Clubs. The Notice of Race for the Summer pennant series and the

Volunteers
As we all know the volunteers are the backbone to our Club, from the
“Wednesday Warriors” who are here every Wednesday morning to
help with the upkeep of our club, from painting buildings to fixing
anything and everything that needs a little touch up, they are ones that
keep the Club looking great and functional. Our start boat/start box
crew which allows our racing to be conducted in a safe and controlled
manner, along with our patrol crew who lay the marks and are on call
if required, to assist in any situation that may unfold on the water.
Social Volunteers who assist in everything from cooking the BBQ’s to
assisting with setup and pack downs of events such as The Crown
Series and of course the Board and Committee members. I, the club
and its members would like to say a huge Thank You to these
individuals that do this amazing work. Without you, we would not be
able to have such a well presented club or conduct such great racing. If
you would are interested in becoming a volunteer please don’t hesitate
to get in contact with the Club, we would be very grateful. Currently,
we need more volunteers who would be capable of driving or helping
on the patrol boats, especially for the upcoming Twilights series. All
you need is a recreational boat license and some on water experience.
The club will be able to provide guidance and training until you feel
confident in taking control of the vessel yourself. If you are interested,
please feel free to contact me at the Sailing Office.

Hi Everyone,
Some great news. sailBYC are running an “Understanding
Weather” course and who better to run it than Kenn Batt. Kenn has a
lifetime of experience in meteorology. I attended one many years ago
and thoroughly enjoyed it. I reckon it’s a must have skill if you plan to
go anywhere past the Iron Pot! The course will explain the basics, the
value of gathering information, understanding observations and
anticipating what the weather scenarios are likely to be. We plan to run
more intensive courses later this year so this will give you a great start.
It’s an all-day course on Sat 7 Sept. Cost is $100.
Please contact the office to register.
Coming up: AUGUST
Information Session sailBYC are running an "Information Session" on the various rating systems and
what you need to do to prepare your boats. Jeff Cordell will be presenting
information on IRC, ORCi and AMS. There are some differences in how boats are
measured and Jeff will explain and answer any questions on all of the rules. With
IRC nationals coming up, now is the time to start your preparation. Chris Sheehan
will be giving a presentation on PHS and Topyacht.
This is a complex task, but you'll get an understanding on what a skilled job a
handicapper does. Everyone who sails under PHS owes the handicapper a beer!
They don't do it for the money.
Date: Wednesday 21st August at 19:00hrs in our Marina Bar.
Cost: NIL
Please contact the office to enrol - 6244 1353 or [email protected] to enrol

Safety Survival at Sea
sailBYC are conducting an Australian Sailing Safety at Sea and
Survival Course. This will be run by Jeff Cordell, who competed in the
1998 Sydney to Hobart race and has been teaching this course since
1999.
This is a prerequisite for Cat. 1 race’s like the Sydney to Hobart, but
it’s equally pitched at cruising sailors.
Thursday Oct 24th - you will learn how to prepare for a voyage. How
to check your equipment, things you should consider like crew training,
and working out how to get the best out of your crew.
Thursday Oct 31st - you will learn how to deal with heavy weather
sailing. How do you set up your boat? What preparations can you
make when you’re in or about to be in a storm? Learn about basic
weather forecasting, reefing, storm jibs and tri-sails. Most importantly
we offer suggestions on what to do if you have a crew member go
overboard.
Sunday Nov 3rd - is an all-day event. It’s the best bit! You get to
inflate a Life Raft and learn how to right it should it flip. We fire off
flares, so if you really have to do this, you will know what to do. We
also cover jury rigs. How you might be able to rig a temporary rudder,
or, fix stuff. We also go through emergency communications and what
to expect if you are being rescued by a helicopter.
Location: Marina Bar
