What is the film about?

• The film follows six strangers who we see at various states of thought and possible change. A narrator guides us through the story as we cut between their journeys. The narrator provides a unique window to their thoughts and feelings leading up to one moment. These thoughts vary between poignancy, humour and states of wonder. The film builds to an unusual occurrence, which affects everyone. Each character's arc and story is brought to an end, some for the better, and some for the worse.

Titles

The titles in the film are placed on a black background using white font, this is so that the titles are appealing to the eye.

The title for the film is in the same font as the other titles, this shows that the film is simple and that the writers e.c.t do not want the titles to draw attention away from the film.

In the beginning scenes of the film we are greeted by the visual of a river, the water seems to be bubbling, this could connote that something wild and unusual is about to happen

As the water begins to bubble, we are shown the scene of a man bursting out of the water. This connotes to audience the image of being born, the use of the overlap of film is also interesting as we can see 2 angles of the characters expression.

In the next scene there is a close up of a woman smiling, form here we start to see the personality of the character. We have the image that she is a free person. The angle of the camera is also interesting as it is a focused close up of her face, dissolving out everything in the background, here we are made to concentrate on her facial expressions. Here we are introduced to the characters

Page 5: Bellybutton

Here the camera has been created into a spit screen this effect connotes that the director is telling tow different story's to the character, the use of the close up and also the framing shots also allows that audience to see the characters movements and facial expressions. The lighting in the pictures are also interesting as it is quite light especially in the tunnel scene

Here we are introduced to one of the main characters, to the audience she acts as the over seier of each of the characters. In the film she does not talk which creates a sense of mystery about her

The use of dark clothing for the character shows that he may be an unhappy character, the comical effect of having the ears on his helmet, connotes that the character is also able to have fun and be happy

Page 7: Bellybutton

This character is shot mostly in dolly shots, framing shots and close ups, this is to show the dismal emotion that the character is feeling and to reflect his thoughts

Page 8: Bellybutton

this is the character that has just been dumped, the contrasting use of black and white on the clothing shows that there may be two sides to the character, it could also show that she is an office worker as the setting is in London

Page 9: Bellybutton

This character provides the connection to all the other character where they all meet. As he robs the shop, the narrator reveals that he is also very sincere as he thinks about his children, you can see from the fidgety movements of the character that he is very nervous and afraid, also the fact that he has a shaven head could connote the stereotype of a chav or a thug in the London area.

When things start to change

This is the scene where all the characters meet each other , it is like a connective scene, the use of close ups through out the scene help to up keep the continuity and the narrative in each shot

Page 12: Bellybutton

Here the use on the split screen is used to emphasise the characters thoughts, one side shows what she is thinking about and the other shows what she is really doing, this way it creates another dimension to the character .

Page 13: Bellybutton

Here the scene has been cut so that the audience can see where each character is, the fast cutting in the scene to transition from one character to another

Sound/dialogueThrough the film the characters them selves don’t speak. Instead, there is a narrator who shares the characters thought s and feelings with the audience, like a inner monologue . This is effective in the film because it adds comedic effect to the film, as the narrator uses only one tone of voice through out the film, this also shows that the writer wants the narrator to remain neutral through the film.

The sound in the film also complements each character and each situation in the film, as we see the more free and wild characters, the music is uplifting and when we are focused on the more dark and depressing characters the use of the trombone adds a comical effect to the film
