WELCOME BACK BBQ Don’t forget the barbeque tomorrow night. All families are very welcome to attend. P&C MEETING The first P&C meeting for the year is next Tuesday evening in the staffroom at 7.15pm. PARENT INFORMATION SESSION Parent Information evenings will be shortly held. All information sessions are in your child’s classroom: These sessions are an opportunity for parents to meet their child’s teacher. Teachers will inform parents of the syllabus out-comes, teaching strategies and expectations. We encourage most parents to attend as these sessions help establish an effec-tive working relationship between the home and the school. All handouts will also be sent home the following day. Parents are encouraged if they have any concerns/queries regarding any aspect of their child’s education to contact the class teacher or the office so that a mutually convenient time can be arranged. Staff have at least four formal meetings before or after school each week so it is difficult for teachers to speak to parents when they have their class and are walking them into their rooms in the morning. We use a booking website, schoolsinterviews for our formal interviews which will be held in the last and second last week of Term 1. UNWELCOMED GUESTS Contrary to previous times, the school grounds at the moment are being used on some nights as a place for illegal recreational activities. To combat this swiftly, Dee Why Police will increase their patrols of the area along with the Department’s Security guards. The playgrounds are checked each morning by staff and cleaners and I ask any family members who are at school after hours to call the security hotline on 1300 880 021 or the local police department, if required. SPELLING PROGRAM Spelling is only one component of an effective piece of writing. A well-written piece of writing needs to consider the: Audience - the writer uses a particular style of language, tone, and content according to what he/she knows about his/her audi-ence Structure - An imaginative text, a persuasive text and an informative one will have a different structure Ideas - the elaboration of development of ideas Vocabulary - the range of precise and effective words Cohesion - how sentences are linked together Paragraphing, Sentence structure and Punctuation. In 2020, we continue to use a range of teaching and learning strategies for the teaching of spelling. I know we live in a techno-logical world with spell checkers and predictable texts but the ability to spell words correctly, particularly in adult life, is important as the harsh reality is that people judge you on your spelling. So how can we at Belrose PS assist the students to apply a wide range of strategies to correctly spell? Students learn to spell using a range of strategies. They begin by understanding that regular one-syllable words are made of letters and common letter clusters that correspond to the sounds heard. They then move to understanding how to use digraphs (two letters to one sound such as with ‘oa’, long vowels, blends and silent letters to spell words, and use morphemic (base word plus ed, ing, tion, ment) and syllabification (peo-ple) to break up simple words. They move on to recognising most misspelt words in their own writing and use a variety of resources for correction. Students need to rely on their visual memory to write words which do not have sound-letter correspondence eg ’was’ . At Belrose PS, alongside our language rich experiences and engaging literature, we will use ’Sound Waves’ for Years 1 to 6 which uses a phonemic approach based on synthetic phonics. The phonemic approach is a sound to letter approach whereby the students are taught the 43 sounds of the English language, that each sounds can be represented by different letter or letter groups. We start with the sound themselves. The program involves the use of both systematic and direct instruction with much discussion in and out of home about words, patterns and strategies we can use to spell, read and write. What changes you may note from when you went to school? The copying of spelling lists for homework may not be done. Activities will move away from the visual learning of words, the con-stant ‘just copying’ of list words down, the weekly spelling test to rich discussion and activities which focus on our language ie study correct pronunciation of words, the number of sounds, what letters form the sounds, the meaning of words in their smallest form (morphemes) and how they change when making compound words or using suffixes and prefixes as well as applying their etymological knowledge.

All students from Years 1 to 6 are currently undertaking a Diagnostic Spelling test to guide the teaching/learning program. All

students will be able to refer to Sound Charts on their desks when writing.

IMPROVEMENT TO GROUNDS 4/5S, 5D, 6M and the technology room is now in full use following the completion of the re-roofing and guttering project. We have employed a contractor to complete some fencing work on Saturday 7 March so that there are two areas with removable posts and a larger gate entrance in Nursery Parade.
