SUMMER IN CHURCHILLBELUGASDuring July and August, over 4,000 beluga whales journey to the Churchill River to feed and give birth. Belugas are extremely social animals, playful with each other and exhibit curiosity about humans and boats. They are often referred to as “Canaries of the Sea” because of their cheerful whale song.

POLAR BEARSOnce the ice of the Hudson Bay breaks up in spring, the polar bears are forced on to land where they begin their “walking hibernation.” It is far less likely to see a polar bear during the summer months than in October and November. If you do see a polar bear, chances are it will be sleeping or moving slowly in the distance.

BLOOMS AND BIRDSChurchill is home to over 500 varieties of flora and fauna. They bloom in bright colours during the spring and summer. Plant life around Churchill includes: fireweed, cloudberry, arctic blue grass, cotton grass, red bearberry, mountain-aven, sea-lime grass, dry-ground cranberry, and orchids. In addition to the belugas, bears and blooms, Churchill is also a bird watchers paradise with over 250 species migrating through the area, including: plovers, ptarmigan, grebes, pacific loons, Ross’s Gull, and sandpipers.

Churchill weather in summer is often warm but temperature can vary as strong winds off the Hudson Bay can push the temperature down several more degrees. The temperature can also feel much cooler on the water while on boat excursions. Dressing in layers is the best way to be comfortable. Temperatures range anywhere from 5 ºC to 20 ºC (41 ºF to 68 ºF).
