Ben Grossman-Kahn Research Projects Cross-Cultural Design: Winter/Spring 2010 Worked on a team of Stanford and Peking University students, conducting observations, interviews and need-finding with Migrant Worker school communities and developed a prototype to help them gain access to needed resources. Observed existing gap between schools that lacked resources and donors who possessed resources, and designed online community forum to connect them. Utilized existing network of volunteers within Migrant schools to act as delivery system. Synthesized our findings into imperatives and designed prototypes which we field tested and presented to Nokia in June 2010. (Detailed below) Transformative Design: Winter 2010 Conducted research to develop empathy and understand user needs within the problem spaces of unemployment and credit card debt. Conducted fieldwork observations, found interview subjects through Craigslist, MeetUp and other social networks and met with executives within the credit industry to understand the viewpoints of all stakeholders. Developed multiple prototypes, resulting in two final product concepts including Job Seeker, an app designed to bring transparency to the job seeking process and give job seekers courage to leave the house, Pomona Undergraduate Thesis, 2005 Conducted research project on the state of religion in modern China. Conducted interviews and observations in Beijing as background, and used a variety of print and media sources to compile data. Qualitative Research Methods, Spring 2010 Conducted 8 week qualitative research project with 3 team members on Formal versus Informal learning experiences. Developed interview protocol, coded transcripts and produced a presentation and research paper at the end of the 8 weeks. d.Coach -LDT Masters Project, Spring-Summer 2010 Developed a web-based program to facilitate and engage students and teachers in long term design projects within K-12 classrooms. Researched teaching of design-thinking in schools, including 5 months as an intern in the Nueva School Innovation Lab. Conducted observations, interviews with teachers and students, and researched the field of inquiry-based design projects. Developed prototype of an online tool based on insights, to coach students through the design process while allowing teachers to track student progress remotely. Conducted user testing and iterated through both paper and digital prototypes. (Detailed below) Monday, September 6, 2010

Transformative Design: Winter 2010 Conducted research to develop empathy and understand user needs within the problem spaces of unemployment and credit card debt. Conducted fieldwork observations, found interview subjects through Craigslist, MeetUp and other social networks and met with executives within the credit industry to understand the viewpoints of all stakeholders. Developed multiple prototypes, resulting in two final product concepts including Job Seeker, an app designed to bring transparency to the job seeking process and give job seekers courage to leave the house,

Pomona Undergraduate Thesis, 2005Conducted research project on the state of religion in modern China. Conducted interviews and observations in Beijing as background, and used a variety of print and media sources to compile data.

Qualitative Research Methods, Spring 2010Conducted 8 week qualitative research project with 3 team members on Formal versus Informal learning experiences. Developed interview protocol, coded transcripts and produced a presentation and research paper at the end of the 8 weeks.

d.Coach -LDT Masters Project, Spring-Summer 2010Developed a web-based program to facilitate and engage students and teachers in long term design projects within K-12 classrooms.

Researched teaching of design-thinking in schools, including 5 months as an intern in the Nueva School Innovation Lab. d.CoachMA Thesis project for Stanford LDT Program ’10

* Observed need for teachers to track student progress in long-term design projects outside of classroom hours, and for students to be able to maintain flow and engagement with projects outside of class work periods.

* A digital tool that coaches students through the design process by giving them a roadmap of where they’ve been andwhere they still need to go in the process.

* Helps teachers stay connected remotely to student/team progress.

* Scaffolds design modules and provides motivation to complete them.d.Coach was developed to meet the needs of K-12 teachers who are motivated to integrate long term design projects into their curriculum but lack training in the process. d.Coach offers a web based solution which scaffolds eachstage of the design process, allows students to maintain all project work online, and helps teachers remotely track group progress both in and out of the classroom and offer genuine assessment based on the actual work done, not just work that students remember to turn in.

Helping Dreams PlatformConcept presented to Nokia for

implementation in Beijing Migrant Worker Communities

* Online forum/bulletin board that connects migrant worker schools with donors who have resources. Bridges the gap between existing networks.

* Utilizes existing volunteer network to act as link between schools and donors.

* Allows principals to post “Wish Cards”, which are tagged with keywords and searchable. This facilitates easy connection with donors who have relevant resources.

The Helping Dreams Prototype was developed in partnership with students from Peking University and sponsored by Nokia. In response to a project brief to explore the problem space of Migrant Worker schools, our team conducted ethnographic field research and interviews in Beijing, then worked remotely between Stanford and Beijing to develop our design concept.

Virtual History ProjectPhysical/Digital Prototype Concept to let students construct historical knowledge

* Physical game board that utilizes game pieces with varying resistor values and GoGo board with resistance sensors

* Software interface developed using Scratch and BYOB

* Allows students to easily create their own history videos and games which they can share with friends

Developed for the Beyond Bits and Atoms class at Stanford, the Virtual History project combines a software interface with a physical game board. By manipulating the physical game pieces, students trigger different events onscreen. Pre-coded command blocks allow students to easily create their own projects and games.

Design for Exploration“Who Stole the Colors”Interactive museum exhibit for the

Exploratorium

* Design for Exploration was a collaboration between Stanford and the Exploratorium, sponsored by Stanford Institute for Creativity in the Arts. Classes and workshops were jointly led by Stanford Product Design faculty and Exploratorium exhibit designers.

* Interactive museum exhibit that teaches visitors about colorand light spectrum using sodium lights and painted objects.

* Exhibit was part of one day exhibition at Exploratorium floor for visitors to engage with.

Treasure Hunt iPhone AppWeb based mobile app developed for CS147 class at Stanford

* Lets users create their own treasure hunts in any geographic location they want.

* Takes the difficulty and time consuming nature out of clue creation and building a treasure hunt by allowing users to quickly create hunts on their phone. Users choose the destinations and questions to be posed at each location. Treasure Hunt builds the hunt and generates the clues.

* Encourages users to explore their neighborhoods and cities in a fun and engaging way

Global Innovation Tournament 2009

* Contestants were asked to create a way to make saving money fun.

* Teams had exactly one week to develop and test a concept and produce a 3 minute video.

* Worked with inter-disciplinary team of Education and Business students to develop FutureSelf concept.
