Tasked with carrying out an in detail brand analysis of a brand and using this information to inform the development of a range of future products, I looked at tackling the number of runners who chose to run without water or purchase it along the way due to the inconvenience that it can cause.

The product proposal was targeted at the year 2025 and needed to be sensitive to future developments. Rather than focusing on technological trends progressing in to the next decade, I instead focused on the recent growth in social sharing apps such as Task Rabbit and Uber, considering how this new public mentality could be applied to tackle the problem.

The bottle works in conjunction with an app that helps runners locate other ‘Strava Refresh’ users in order to get a top up on the go. This means that the volume of the bottle can be reduced making it less awkward to carry.

The bottle’s form is based on the shape of a running baton, a product that has been developed to be carried while running and that is synonymous with sharing.

OpenFood is an EPSRC funded project, led by Dr Sharon Baurley, which aims to prototype open innovation models for manufacturing in food and packaging. In the UK alone, packaging results in around 10million tonnes of waste every year which contributes 7-10% of the total waste produced. As a result of this, the way that packaging waste is dealt with has huge impacts on the environment.

We RePurpose is a crowdsourcing web platform that encourages people to extend the lifespan of this packaging and reduce overall consumption. Contributors use the website to share and develop upon each others solutions, which are then communicated back to packaging designers and manufacturers with the goal of encouraging and promoting these behaviours.

The waste hierarchy orders waste management in terms of impact (From least to most harmful: reduce, reuse, recycle, reclaim). In the current model there is a heavy focus on the recycling of materials, but the less harmful choice of reusing or repurposing these waste items is largely overlooked.

The sandwich and on the go lunch item market is a rapidly growing sector, spurred on by peoples increasingly busy lifestyles. However, it can often be challenging to separate healthy options from their carb and fat heavy counterparts. With the aim to produce new product meanings that both make it easier to know just how beneficial a food choice is, and to encourage healthy eating, a range of user research was carried out investigating the current meanings associated with these meals.

“It gets everywhere and doesn’t look good. Also if it smells bad I don’t want to be walking around stinking.”

“There’s lots of advertising but no backstory.”

With the information gathered from the research investigating existing products, a new concept was created which addresses some of the pain points that people have with these meals.

Facts and information relating to the healthiness and ingredient origins were separated out on to a separate panel to avoid confusion with the marketing and promotion. These were then also displayed in a more easily digestible format.

A simple double corrugation was also added to the viewing window to prevent sauces from smearing against it which, during interview, several people claimed to find off putting during the selection process.

The design aims to alter the established current meanings of messy, overwhelming, confusing and misleading to neat, controlled, empowering and honest.

John Guest

During my year long internship with John Guest I was mainly responsible for the design and development of connectors for use within the fibre optics industry. To the right is a range of development models proposed for a resealable gas block, a connector that can seal down on the fibre between connections, used in areas where there is a risk of gasses travelling along the pipe line.

As an intern I was given the opportunity be responsible for projects from the initial briefing throughout the design phase, working alongside tool makers to ensure manufacturability, in to the CNC coding for tool production, and finally in to testing and evaluation. This gave me a rare insight in to the whole product development process and design for manufacture.

UX: Mental Models

While analysing the user experience of hand blenders a range of mental models were created to assess whether or not the functionality of the products aligned to the users expectations. This was then used to inform design decisions for improving the product-user interaction.

Sketching & Rapid Visualisation

These are a range of sketches produced to communicate ideas at different levels of detail. This is one of the fastest ways to express ideas and a consistant part of my design process. I am comfortable at producing both low fidelity sketches and more developed, presentation drawings to present to peers and clients.

I have been working on both the product design and branding for a new start-up watch design company. The current business plan is structured around using the heritage and reputation of British design and engineering to target markets in India, and specifically Bangladesh. The aim is to produce an initial batch of one hundred watches to take to market by January 2015 in order to test the response.
