Principal’s Message Week 3 Term 2
Last Monday the School Final for the Multi-Cultural Speaking Competition was held. The quality of all the speeches
was high and they were commended by the judge, Rob Lewis. Congratulations to Jeanie Inglis and Skye Vaughan
who have been chosen to represent Ben Venue in the Senior Division of the Regional
competition and to Brittany Tarrant and Ruby Johns who were selected to represent
Ben Venue in the Junior Division. I wish these students well at the next level of
competition.
The Cricket team had a close win over Moree last Thursday. I have been told it was a
very good game but our students were not used to the extreme heat! Well done
cricketers and thank you to Richard Cotter for travelling to Moree with the team and
giving up his time to coach. The next round of competition will be held in October.
Touch Football
Last week the Armidale Zone Touch Football Trials were held. Congratulations to
Maddie Porter, Skye Vaughan, Sophie Clayton, Indy Edwards and Sophie Parsons on
their selection in the zone side and best wishes for NW selection trials.
Creative and Practical Arts
Congratulations to all of our students involved in the 2019 National Trust Saumarez
ANZAC Art Competition. The award ceremony was held on Friday evening at the
Armidale Library. Ben Venue was well represented with Greta Mulready (K) and
Dominic Capione Van Zetten (2) receiving 1st prize, while Lola Beat (1) came second
and Mikaela Hall (1) was highly commended. Students in Year 5/6 R received the
Packers’ Prize for their class entry. This is a fabulous achievement for all our students.
School Uniform
A draft school uniform policy has been developed and examples of the uniform are on display in the foyer. The
Uniform Committee should be congratulated on their efforts to ensure all aspects of the new DoE Policy have been
incorporated into our School Policy. They have incorporated feedback from previous surveys and have included a
range of options for all students that do not require purchasing anything different to what they already own. This
draft policy will be taken to the P&C for ratification on Wednesday 5 June. Feedback can be placed in the comment
box in the foyer.
NAPLAN
NAPLAN begins on Tuesday and will continue until Friday 24 May. Although classes are scheduled to complete
tests in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions and Numeracy on set days, there will be opportunities for these
tests to be completed during the testing period if students are absent on the day their class is sitting a test.
Painting, NAPLAN & Library Borrowing
Over the next few weeks the classrooms in the Year 1 corridor will be given a makeover. This will include fresh paint
on walls, ceilings, windows and doors. There will be some disruption to classes during this period but we believe the
result will be worth the inconvenience. There will be no library borrowing this week or next due to NAPLAN being
held in the library. In some years, a mobile library will allow students to exchange books in their library session.
UR STRONG
On Friday night over 140 parents and students participated in the Friendship workshop. This was followed up by a
whole day of professional learning for teachers on Saturday 11 May. What amazing events! 100% of staff indicated

that this was very valuable professional learning and could see that the implementation of ‘Friendology 101’ would
support our aim of developing students who have the personal resources for future success and wellbeing. This
program will be implemented in the upcoming weeks. I will also be including information about this program in future
newsletters. I thank everyone who came on Friday night to support this wellbeing initiative and thank teachers for
giving up a Saturday to be part of our journey towards school excellence.

EARN and LEARN
Our school will once again participate in this. Last year we were able to purchase a variety of sporting and PE
equipment including sets of footballs, basketballs and netballs, stopwatches, discus relay batons and tape
measures to name a few. The return box is located in the school foyer.
Walk Safely to School Day
Friday 17 May is Walk Safety to School Day, on which students are encouraged to walk or ride safely to school. This
day promotes the benefits of regular exercise in a healthy lifestyle.
2019 Armidale Zone Primary Schools Cross Country Championships
On Friday 3 May, Bellevue Oval at the University of New England hosted the 2019 Armidale Zone Primary Schools Cross
Country Championships.
With more than 300 students representing 25 schools from across the Zone, the times were fast and an excellent team
has been selected to represent the Armidale Zone at the North West Regional Championship in mid-June.
Ben Venue PS students were highly competitive, so much so that they
WON the All-Around trophy with 435 points,

Kindergarten News
This term, Kindergarten students are learning about weather and seasonal changes in our environment during our
Science and Technology lessons. Students have begun to closely observe and discuss our daily weather changes
and are learning to work as scientists to record their observations using symbols. Students are quickly expanding
their vocabulary when discussing various types of weather. We experienced some very windy weather while
participating in a partner obstacle course during our ‘Festival of Friendship’ activities on Friday!
Kindergarten are enjoying taking part in our You Can Do It lessons and have quickly learnt the names of the 5 You
Can Do It characters and the special attributes of each one. We are all working very hard to be organised and
independent with our belongings every morning, just like Oscar Organisation. This will be very important as we
begin our Home Reading Program, where students will be responsible for returning and changing their readers.
This week, the Kindergarten Bilbies and the Kindergarten Frogs are looking forward to our very first visit to the Life
Education Van where they will meet Healthy Harold. The Kindergarten Crocodiles and
Kindergarten Giraffes will attend in Week 4. Please remember to return your child’s permission note and money
prior to the day.
We look forward to the term ahead in Kindergarten and thank you for your continued support.

UNE Discovery Van Year 5 and 6
Last Wednesday and Thursday Year 5 and 6 were lucky enough to be visited by the UNE Discovery Voyager. The
UNE Discovery Voyager brings interactive activities to K-10 students in regional and rural classrooms across north-
ern NSW with an aim to inspire students, to draw on their natural curiosity and existing knowledge of the environ-
ment that we live in, and cultivate confidence and a can-do attitude.
The activities the students participated in have been developed in collaboration with UNE researchers to highlight
current ways of thinking in a range of scientific disciplines. A team of scientists and science educators deliver explor-
atory, interactive play-based activities, encouraging students to direct their own exploration and discovery.
Students at Ben Venue donned the lab coats and safety googles to participate in the Curious Chemicals experi-
ments, in order to find out whether the mystery substances were an acid or alkaline.
In Dynamic Bodies Year 6 actively participate in a number of tests to develop a “performance profile”, using sports
science equipment. This included a power assessment, vertical jump, speed, throw accuracy and grip strength.
Another activity, called Plants, Poop and Pollinators, students looked in depth at a number of insects. This included
insects that are beneficial to plant and crop growth as well as insects that are detrimental to plant survival. The
dung-beetle games incorporated into this activity was VERY enjoyable.
Finally, Smart Farming encouraged students to look at different scientific techniques that farmers use to assist farm-
ing practices. Students were able to use different equipment to test the moisture content of the soil and light gauges
to test how green the grass is.
Thank you to the UNE Science Discovery Voyager for sharing your knowledge with us.
All other Year groups will get to experience some of the other activities later in the year. Notes will be sent home
closer to the dates.

Cricket Report Round 4 PSSA Knockout Competition 2019
The Ben Venue Cricket Team travelled to Moree to play their round 4 match in the PSSA
Knockout Competition last Thursday May 9.
Ben Venue captain Sophie Parsons won the toss and elected to bowl first.
Moree batted steadily in the opening overs and it took until the 9th over before Ben Venue struck
with Taj Killen taking an overhead catch off the bowling of Sophie Parsons.
The following over saw the second wicket fall after Baxter Williams took a clever catch off the
bowling of Jackson Taylor.
Moree went to the 13 over drinks break with a modest score of 2 for 38.
After the drinks break Ben Venue bowler Hugo Fittler had Moree’s 3rd
wicket when James Hunt
took another catch that had been skied towards square leg.
The Moree batsmen then undertook a batting revival and began playing their shots and pushing
the scoreboard along steadily.
After 25 overs Moree had reached a tidy total of 3 for 97 with both C. Cooper scoring 34 and M.
Beoddos 17 not out.
Best Bowlers for Ben Venue were Sophie Parsons 1 for 8 off 4 overs, Jackson Taylor 1 for 12
off 5 and Hugo Fittler 1 for 12 off 3.
Ben Venue began their innings with Jackson Taylor and Jared Frost opening the batting against
some tight Moree bowling. Both batters looked to capitalise by scoring off any loose balls and
guided the Ben Venue innings to 0 for 48 off 13 overs at drinks.
At the 17th over, Frost took it upon himself to really push the run rate and did so with some great
shots. Taylor also began to play more shots and it was the quick chasing of runs that eventually
saw Taylor run out for 14 after an opening partnership of 70 runs.
This brought Sophie Parsons to the crease to join Jared Frost. Both batters continued to push
the ball around and run hard on every shot which eventually found Frost also run out for 38 in
the pursuit of quick runs.
Alex Harris joined Parsons at the crease and the pair were able to guide Ben Venue to a
winning total of 98 with 10 balls to spare. Parsons remained 8 not out and Harris on 2 not out.
The Ben Venue Cricket Team will now enjoy the winter sports season before resuming their
PSSA Cricket campaign in early October.

Aboriginal Health Service
Armajun Aborginal Health Service is offering Ben Venue the opportunity to participate in an Aboriginal Health
Assessment. This health check is essential for accessing the ‘Close the Gap’ benefit. It will involve an Armajun
clinical team (a registered nurse, an Aboriginal health worker and a GP) visiting the school and conducting
health assessments on all consenting Aboriginal students. Health assessments include a comprehensive
history of your child’s life followed by a full physical examination . This will include checking your child’s eyes,
ears and teeth. The aim of health assessments is to identify any physical or behavioural issues at an early age
to allow for intervention and better future outcomes for your child.
Information packages will be sent home this week for each Aboriginal student. If you wish your child to
participate please return the attached registration form before Friday 31 May 2019.
Should you require support to complete these forms please contact the school.
